This is the thread for all things Pretty Lights! Loved his set at the EDC last weekend and can't wait to catch him again. Please bring him to Coachella 2010!

If you don't know here is a link to his first two albums. They are FREE, but I would have paid full fuckin' price for these gems: http://www.prettylightsmusic.com/

Here is a sample of his live show. He has never spun a record on stage, he does everything live. Perfect for the Sahara, but after dark PLEASE! Come on Coachella Boardies, show your love!

enough with these gimmicky acts.

we already had to suffer through etienne this year (which was probably the biggest letdown in coachella history).

i don't think so. if that were the case, then every dj would have to pay royalties every single time they play a set.

Couldn't disagree more with your first statement. Saw him 2 weeks ago at EDC(not ettiene) and there were no gimicks, unless you count samples as gimicks. Great lights and video, but pretty standard really. Ohhh yeah and... he killed it.

Couldn't AGREE more with your second statment. I just didn't get it. + there were lights outside of the tent that were kind of brighter than the cube. I was pumped for it and after seeing it... meh. I can think of 10 other acts that were better in the Sahara that weekend, and what a weekend it was.

I just thought of something funny, Ettiene de MEHcy or Ettiene MEH Crecy. Either one pretty much sums it up for me.

Pretty Lights is going to be there whether you like it or not. I suggest that you go to prettylightsmusic.com and download his albums. That way, when he absolutely kills whatever tent they put him in you will enjoy it as much as possible.

"Taking Up Your Precious Time" and "Filling Up the City Skies" - Disc 1 are pretty good but are a little different than FUTCS - Disc 2, which is REALLY good.

etienne was so terrible - a true disgrace and smack in the face of plump dj's. to put etienne AFTER the plumps is sick! if the plumps would have played during etienne's spot people would be talking about them so much.

and pretty lights is the shit, if you have a chance then don't miss it, especially with the drummer.

O.K. fine... not "Everything Live". The drummer is there most of the time (I prefer he wasn't) for partial "Liveness", but what I meant was he plays a Mono 128. This lets him produce incredible variations of his pre-recorded & sampled tracks right on the spot. He can basically produce a whole new beat "live" on the spot. Like I said, he has never spun a record on stage which is sick by me.

Here's some close up video for those who are interested. If you've never seen a Mono 128 played up close before, you must check this out.
http://www.vimeo.com/599459

I fell like I'm an f-ing P.R. rep for this guy, but he does have an answer for the "awkward" stage presense...

"If I could get a taller table it would be a lot less hunch. I love seeing an artist really get into the music they're performing, and really that's all I'm doing..."

ya i jumped to conclusions without really listening. i would love to see them at coachella.

I got into Pretty Lights post-Coachella, pre-Rothbury. Hi my name is Naproxen and I'm an addict!!

I downloaded the three albums from www.prettylightsmusic.com and proceeded to listed to them daily up til Rothbury. Now Pretty Lights performed Saturday night, so Thurs-Saturday afternoon was me bouncing around the camp, humming the tunes, blasting them from my car radio, and hooking everyone I was camping with onto the same.

I managed to catch Pretty Lights 3!!!! times at Rothbury, soundcheck, scheduled performance (during the fucking fireworks, check youtube vid below) AND randomly found myself at the Umphrey McGee's late night set at the exact time Pretty Lights came on to do a midset break for them! Good for me, not a huge Umphrey's fan, I thought I was just real real lucky.

Anywho, here is how I spent my 4th of July fireworks display:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LnTL7u1dE8

Hot Like Sauce:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEKFzK3d8wY

I want nothing more than Pretty Lights at Coachella 2010....late!!!! Hell, let him do a campers only performance too. With or without the drummer, this guy fucking kills it.

"live" doesn't mean just your typical musical instruments anymore... at least when it comes to electronic music. Artists use synths (keys), triggers, etc. and the performance becomes more of a spontaneous mash-up of sounds they are chosen on the spot. Ableton live kinda does the same thing with tracks and samples, which can also be controlled with a piece of hardware:

Pretty Lights is the eclectic electronica brainchild of versatile Colorado based producer Derek Vincent Smith, who assembles tracks that are always creative, often soulful and down-to-earth and brought to life by the beats supplied by drummer, Cory Eberhard. We welcome the energetic and emotional approach this duo bring to their music which should be right at home in the High Sierra atmosphere…

I just started a new job across from the belly up in SD so I impulsed today and bought some tickets for PL on the 12th.

Who's going???

Casino Logic
10-08-2009, 10:55 AM
Moi too!

I was on the PL website downloading the new album and I saw that his next 3 shows in Colorado are sold-out this weekend, so I jumped on and grabbed my tickets. I know he's from Colorado, so I would be a little surprised if the Belly Up sells out, but I wasn't gonna risk it. Definitely, not missing this one!

So the album is quite awesome yes... but I feel like he's almost copying the sound of STS9 on this one... if you gave STS9 a band mate doing stuff on ableton every once in awhile when they play...this is what it would sound like me thinks...

Not that I mind, it's still really good.

Tonight was a all around good time. Great crowd and PL killed it. Everyone was dancing but not as crazy as Derek wanted; he kept saying "c'mon make some noise WTF." He got a good reaction but not was he was used to obviously. Good show but not EPIC at all. Got a little repetitive and the lights probably could have been more, well pretty. It helped I had an amazing dance partner and the crowd was somewhat grooving hard. I enjoyed the slow soulful beats and deep bass.

Compared to someone like Bassnectar (seen at belly up) PL wasn't anything too special, but that not to say I had a great time.

WOW! I have seen somewhere around 75-100 shows at the Belly Up and I must say I have never seen such a sick ass light display crammed in there before. For me the light display alone was EPIC! I have seen better lights before and most larger amphitheater or Coachella type shows have them, but to see that display crammed into the Belly Up... well I was impressed.

Musically it was very similar to the albums, not a whole lot of change up there. Although there were a few minor changes/additions and a couple of tracks that I had not heard before (not on any of the albums, not the new one either). Basically, the whole place was bumpin' and grindin' for 2 hours straight, which is all you can really ask for. I may make the Trek to L.A. tommorrow for round two.

Here is a brief clip I shot last night on a digital camera so the video quality is just alright, but you get the idea. It takes about 15 seconds before you actually SEE video. Enjoy!

what i want to know is how a guy(s) this new, and who gives all his jams away for free, has the cash for all that gear!? i was upstairs at the indy and they had shit on the entire right side of the board....all for the lights. damn!

this will play well at coachella, it was a dance party and the light wall will satisfy all the light junkies (which i admit i fall for myself...queue, the cube). that is, if they are actually really playing. i asked *one* of the light guys (yes, they fukken have two) if they are going to play next year and he reacted as if he had pocket deuces... "if they invite us, we'll be there!"

thanks for the heads up on the new release. i'll listen to that tomorrow. need some new edm...it's been kinda a slow 2009 in that regard, imho.

I am very excited for Pretty Lights to be performing this year! I saw them at Rothbury and in a few weekends up in Boston again, a great dance party!

First this:

enough with these gimmicky acts.

we already had to suffer through etienne this year (which was probably the biggest letdown in coachella history).

Then comes the tail between the legs:

ya i jumped to conclusions without really listening. i would love to see them at coachella.

Then he is back jumping to conclusions after only listening to a portion of PL's work (stuff they usually never play live):

he (they?) has (have?) two albums you can download for free on his website. i downloaded the first, and wasn't too impressed. not much variety to his (their?) sound.

Then he must have discovered a festering sore in that pocket between his legs:

that's b/c you've listened to shitty music your entire life, so anything that's not shitty is amazing to you. like a 2 year old kid. everything is new and exciting.

Take a chill pill crazzz, a big one. And then come join me and everyone else in the tent for some fucking amazing downtempo (just don't get too close...with that sore).

And whoever is talking about Prodigy. Yeah, their good, fine. But they are a completely different genre. Electronic music is an umbrella term, not a genre.

I don't understand when people are saying Pretty Lights doesn't have talent. There job is to make people dance and have a good time. When you go to a Pretty Lights show, all people are doing are dancing and having a good time.

What it comes down to is - Pretty Lights is FUN. it's not complex, it's not innovative, it's just FUN, and that's what makes it special.

I can't wait for Pretty Lights ala Coachella.

The Prodigy's last album was fucking great, anyone who says otherwise is a d-bag.

Anyways, this cat looks alright I suppose but it's not really anything I'd dance to. I suppose I might not mind chilling out sitting in the back watching this go on at a club, but it still ain't really dance music as far as I'm concerned. Then again, most of the crap in the Sahara does indeed suck more. bring the fucker, why not.

I honestly hope they don't put him in the Sahara. He'd have to be at an early time slot and i just don't like to go hard all day long.. Also, would he fill up the Sahara even if he was playing at night? I just don't think so. He could though... i'm thinking that his name might provide a decent draw alone... hmmmm....

does anyone remember how big the Roo tent was compared to the Sahara? granted no one had really heard of him then, but it wasn't full at all.

Ghostland is a beast of a live show. They deserved it.

Girl Talk is an abomination, never speak that name again.

Pretty Lights, Friday or Saturday night in the Gobi sounds just fine to me. I really don't care who is playing at the time, I'll take PL. Every time i've seen him (4 times) it's gotten better (and you always hear something new... impressive for a guy who just started touring about 2 years ago), and even if he flops or the setting just isn't right i feel obligated to support him.

The Sahara never seems full til about 6:30pm-7pm, and then its usually shoulder to shoulder the rest of the night (and it sucks if you arrive afterward, cuz then you have to fight your way up to a nice spot) until the tent squares off against the big headliner, then it's pretty much empty at night (which is sort of cool) ala Michael Mayer (06), Evil Nine (07), and S&D (08). I really wish I could have been in that tent in 2004 during Kraftwerk, sigh...

until the tent squares off against the big headliner

there is nothing sweeter than this moment...

You are on the edge of this massive crowd of people, maybe you are not even in the tent yet. It's looking hopeless. Everyone inside the tent is going crazy and you want desperately to be in there. Just as you have accepted your fate, the people begin to disperse like air out of a large balloon. You look down at your Coachella schedule book and smile to yourself as you casually walk toward your spot in the middle of the tent.

P.S. Special thanks to:

Never was this more true for me the year The Pixies played. Boozoo Bajou is an act that I had wanted to see for ages and they played (the Gobi I think) to a very very sparse audience during the Pixies (who I have no interest in)

I go to school out in Boulder which is apparently where they went. They had a show on campus for free to start first semester, and people were getting buckwild.

Because of that show everyone thinks they are the dopest fucking band. I dont understand this. They fucking suck. I had fun at the show, but thats just because it was a free show on campus with 30,000 other heads. I mean with that many people an Aesop Rock concert would be bumping. Pretty Lights style is just so bland and boring.

Lucky for them the Coachella crowd is just dope as fuck so people will prolly get down.

But fuck Pretty Lights though. Their music is just borring as fuck.
