For each state the Americans have they, along comes a music festival for you guys....

I think its time for Canada to get some good big ones....
We had Pemberton last year....but probably cause of the stupid as hell olympics we don't have that this time... We have small great ones but their headliners are on the bottom of a coachella lineup..... maybe its where I live but seriously.....send some music up to us :(

until then....I'll stay with my Coachella

Due SXSW.

That's pretty much the smartest thing I'll ever say, right there.

Wait, Canada gets the V festivals and they have some, maybe just not around you? check the festival forum, there were a couple notable ones with decent line ups. QUIT CRYING.

we really don't have any big fests, but toronto's got a really really solid regular scene. 400 live music venues.

allow me to rephrase:
we don't have any "european style" festivals.

Go fuck yourself. Last year we had V-fest here, with headliners Stone Temple Pilots. And by headliners, I mean they were the best thing on the lineup. I didn't go and I could have WALKED there.

We need a Coachella north ASAP! Look how many Canadians show up at Coachella, and Sasquatch is probably a half-Canadian crowd!

See that's the thing. Canadian shows have a 12316% higher chance of at least one awesome secret guest star, because the awesome secret guest stars in question can just be doing their shopping or whatever and decide on a whim to jump onstage. Or get somebody to watch the dinner while they go and sing Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl. Stuff like that.

It kind of makes sense to me that Canada would have lots of smaller, indier events rather than big, corporatish ones though.

Wow, that does make it much more enticing. Add in the Roots and I'd be inclined to go.

Too bad it still doesn't make up for booking Our Lady Peace ...

Yeah, adding The Roots to headline above OLP was probably a good move on their part. With that being said, I would still like to see OLP for no other reason than nostalgia.

You from Vancouver?

That, and every Candian who picks up an instrument automatically becomes a member of Broken Social Scene.

At least you guys got the Flaming Lips last year.

And I understand OLP hate haha, no worries. Their new song is horrible. Their old music just brings back good memories for me. "Clumsy" was the first song I ever memorized beginning to end.

Someday, Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene's opposing conscription programs will finally have swallowed up every able bodied Canadian in the nation, and every non-music industry in the country will just heel over.

Then the final, apocalyptic Montréal/ Toronto Icewar will begin. And being Canadian, they'll all take the "civil war" thing very seriously.

Ah, but that's the danger. The Vancouverites... Vancouvriens?... will wait until the dust settles and Montoronto has destroyed itself. Then, putting into action the training and equipment they all got when they were Stargate extras, they sweep across the uninhabitable middley bit and claim their own final, bloody victory over the other entertainment cities.

Then everything will look pleasant-and-sort-of-familiar-from-an-X-Files-episode.

In Winnipeg (central Canada), there is nasty thing going on today. It is called Rock on the Range, I think Billy Talent is headlining, Rancid is there, rise against maybe?...not too sure who else, as it is not for me. Lots of my friends went though. It is the first outdoor 'rockfest' since 2001 in Winnipeg. 2001 had Summersault, which had the original Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, OLP, A Perfect Circle. I went to this!

Canada used to have traveling circut festivals but they have been dead for some time, its a shame. The Folk Fests are fun though. In Winnipeg this year, among others, Elvis Costello, Neko Case, and Bell Orchestre will be there.

Winnipeg is uninhabitable by normal standards, but when you live 739kms to the north (for only 3 more days!), it is the epicenter of life. Like...it really is beyond comprehension how isolated I am.

Plus, Sled Island just finished up. CJSW has their summer series at Olympic Plaza. Jazz festival's Party in the Plaza is today. Afrikadey!, Reggae Fest and Blues Fest in August. It's a good couple of months...

Sure, they're not "on par" with the likes of Coachella, SXSW or Sasquatch, but I'll take what I can get.

No way! Vancouver has the mighty New Pornographers collective. The big rock-n-roll 3-way (guitarmegeddon?) can take place in my hometown since its in the middle, sorta, and I don't care if it gets destroyed.

I've gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with what Sled Island has become and that Calgary can support it. Monotonix were everywhere. Played 3 sets I think. My favorite was when the commandeered a street during their show at a local hotdog joint. Always crazy.

That Monotonix gig looks nuts. Like always. But wait... they just took over a street? Like said "Fuck you street, your ours now!" And shut down traffic and everything? And the gig was at a Hot Dog joint!?

Mordecai
07-02-2009, 08:21 PM
I was slightly exaggerating. They had a gig at Tubby Dog (http://www.tubbydog.net). They took the show out onto the sidewalk and it spilled into the street. It was pretty awesome though. Add some amazing hot dogs and you've got a winner.

JClemy

Oh sweet Jesus how I miss Tubby Dog! I thought Calgary got the shaft with Music till I came to Northern Japan. They have classical Japanese artists(not new ones), Oasis and Simon and Garfunkel. Those are the acts I've see that have made it to the City 1 hour south of me. I can't wait for Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic. That said the Roots would be awesome! Pearl Jam not so much.
