Well I'm a wreck today. Tears in my eyes reading this thread. I don't think I understood what having your sense of well being totally violated is really like. I feel so on edge. Thank you for the well wishes, people. I wish I could have met some of you last night instead of members of LA's finest, you seem like good people.

So tell me more about Buraka. How were they? Did their set differ much from Coachella? Was the crowd into it? Same crazy hot female vocalist/booty shaker as at Coachella?

And tell me more about Jaxx. I'm delighted to hear that their DJ set was so explosive. I had faith in them. They have impeccable taste. They're damn legends, people.

And, no, I haven't lost faith in raves or in HARD. My incident was completely unrelated to the rave world. They had no way of knowing we had tickets in our bag, it was just a random mugging, random act of violence. I may be in Miami for NYE. If not, I'll probably make it out to HARD NYE. Carry on with post-show merriment, please.. :)

EDITED TO SAY:
WTF!! Burka is touring??? (Just saw that in Ficklecycle's sig). Why didn't anyone tell me?? I remember looking up their tour schedule when they got announced for HARD and there was nothing. Now they're playing The Mayan and the Casbah? Oh damn. I am getting myself to one or both of those shows. Seeing them at the Casbah, a tiny cramped club, will be insane. And I thought returning to this thread would only make me feel worse. (Well, it did, until I saw this!)

Glad to hear you're not letting it get in the way of any future raves you plan to attend!

Buraka absolutely TORE SHIT UP at HARD. I think it was WAY better than the Coachella set. People were into it and yes that booty shaking chick was there in a little sailors outfit.

I didn't even find out about the show until last night when I saw a flyer on the floor after HARD and was like "OH HELL FUCK YEAH IM THERE"

Last night was SOOOOOOOO fucking INCREDIBLE!!

Everything was overwhelmingly amazing, i'm so happy i went :D

classic post-first-rave quote :)

but in all seriousness, as i woke up yesterday i had a little revelation that we are all indeed very lucky to be alive and well after so much irresponsible debauchery haha

jewface - that's so very fucked, though im glad you didn't get hurt any worse

dev - i'm still bummed about not getting to see you friday, but judging from your comments about last night i don't feel nearly as bad for you hah

yeah last night really was great. i got to see Feather and Andrew and fun people and met some n00bs and watched BJDJ instead of bailing for just friday like i had originally planned. it's funny how things work, i'm kind of stoked i ended up there saturday instead, even though the reason was kind of stressful.

the alien autopsy was ghey. modeselektor was not underwhelming, wtf are you talking about? that shit started slow for a reason, then blew up in your face. sickest, trippiest beats of the night, only taking 2nd to BJDJ because of their song selection and mixing skillz.

I cannot believe I'm saying this but Justice on Sarurday was far superior then Deadmau5 either night. They had the audience eating out of their palms all night and it made for one of the better sets of the weekend.

And did anyone else catch the "naked" girl at Crookers? Hahaha

Justice was better than I expected. Definitely better than Deadmau5 who I was a dissapointed in after seeing him play a pretty awsome set at Lolla. I left after FML to go see 2manydjs and im glad i did.

I was up in the front when the girl during crookers flashed. It was pretty cool haha :D

I have to say, last night was absolutely amazing. The crowd was wonderful, the music was to die for, the molly and k were outsanding, and the night in general was just fantastic.

Met someone who lurks the boards hahah.

Best artist of the night:

Shinichi Osawa/2manydjs

worst:

Major Lazer.
The horn killed it for me. I even went inside for a few minutes to go see Aoki (who i got annoyed with after a few minutes and left, but tbh it wasnt an abomination which is what he's known for.)

Crookers played a pretty awsome set. I was happy with the fact that they didnt have their friend MCing like they did the last two times i saw them.

Classixx was also amazing and id love to see them in the Sahara next year.

Shinichi was absolutely blissful. Way better set than at EDC imo.
I would also like to see him in the Sahara next year.

2manydjs was a beautiful surprise. I looooved their set.

Buraka was also pretty cool. Not my favorite of the night, but it was a pretty dope set.

Overall an A+ night

Just got home. How was Basement Jaxx? I have no idea.

I was able to take an earlier flight back to LA from SF. I got home around 2, so my boyfriend, my friend Patrick, Doug (Castanets) and I decided to do a bit of a late afternoon pub crawl before getting ready for HHM.

We were all so excited about everyone's first rave and first HARD event, first B. Jaxx experience. We even met this fun group of girls dressed up as Obama and Health Care Townhall protesters. They were carrying these rave related fake protest signs with slogans like "Keep Your Gov't Out of My Rave" and "Obama Death Panel (DJ Set)" so I asked them where they were headed tonight and, yes, they were headed to HHM. One of them even admitted to posting on here sometimes, but I forget her sn. But, if you're reading this, hi ladies and thanks for making the early part of our evening so much fun!

Patrick drove Doug back to his place so that they could get into costume and then meet back at my apartment for the HHM carpool. My bf and I walked the half mile back to my apartment. We were noisily chatting about which acts we were most excited to see and so engrossed in our conversation that we weren't really paying enough attention to our surroundings. As we were rounding a quiet corner less than a quarter mile from my apartment, we were accosted but 3 well armed unsavory young men. We were ordered to lie down on the pavement face down, guns to the back of both our heads. They emptied our pockets and took my boyfriend's messenger bag. They made off with both our wallets (credit cards, social security cards, his green card, ids, $250 in cash between us) and the contents of my bf's bag. Which included all of our HHM tickets. For good measure, i got a kick in the face which bruised me up a bit, but nothing serious, but one of those bastards decided to clock the back of my bf's head with the gun which almost knocked him out and left him bleeding slightly. They told us to count to 50 before getting up and then ran around the corner. I heard them getting into their car and tearing off. It wasn't a bashing, if that's what you're thinking. They didn't call us fags or anything. We didn't go to any gay bars, we weren't in costume, we weren't holding hands or showing any PDA. I'm pretty confident it was just a mugging.

Physically, I'm fine. Just some light bruising. My bf suffered a concussion and has some stitches in the back of his head. He's being kept overnight for observation, but will probably be released first thing in the morning.

If that wasn't bad enough, they got away not just with my ticket and my bf's, but the tickets for Patrick, Doug (who was out here from NY!) and our friends Claire and Serena. I feel so guilty about ruining their Halloween as well.

I'm still seething with anger here and, frankly, still quite shaken from having a gun to my head. Luckily, since I've just moved up here none of my ID's have my new address, so if this was gang related in anyway, these guys don't know where I live. One bright note, I suppose, is that the LAPD were very responsive and a very nice detective has been in touch with me throughout the night. God I hope they catch those fuckers.

So not PLUR. Worst Halloween ever. I hope the rest of you had a much better Halloween. I'm going to take some Excedrin PM and try to get some sleep. Doug, I'm so sorry for ruining your Halloween. I hope you and Patrick at least go out to WeHo or something and have some fun.

Jesus Christ Cara de Judio! So happy to hear that you guys are alive. Please consider some type of counseling. Tramatic events like that need to be purged.

the best item of saturday night was 2manyDJs dropping windowlicker out of major lazer. when are we ever gonna get a decent aphex twin set in the u.s. that is actually accessible or not at an all-day festival? i really have only seen him at coachella the two times he played, and wasn't into that kind of music years ago when i first saw it. i'd love to have him featured by any company, let alone HARD or something else hot right now, on a one-off small festival like HHM or 13.

HARD - Friday Night

I arrived at the Vagabond around 8:30AM. There was plenty of free parking. I was especially excited to meet Nbvcide for the first time. Very laid back guy. Thanks for not staring me down with that WHAT IS THIS FAT GUY doing at this rave?

Signs to indicate the entrance would have been helpful. The line was 5 minutes long. A person scanned our ticket, but then there was another line. Apparently the first line was to validate the authenticity of our ticket. I seen and heard a girl on her cell phone saying, “Guess what? THEY JUST TOLD US OUR TICKETS ARE FAKE”. It sucked to hear. Though there weren’t signs on how to get in, there were these big CalTrans signs flashing to “Beware of counterfeit tickets”. The second line, which was security, took 15 minutes to get in. Other than the crowds gathering at the entrance into the Shrine, the size of crowd was not bad at all.

Walked outside to catch Danger’s set. Adequate would be the best description to describe his set. He played a HODGEPODGE of songs that touched airy trance, techno, and a smidge of jungle. Some guy came up to a group of girls to my right and asked if they wanted to smell his bandana. I glanced around to make sure it wasn’t ether or some type of date rape shit. It landed up being peppermint oil. It smelled pretty good.

Next up was A-TRAK. I remember seeing this guy standing around the Sahara stage a couple of years ago. I don’t think he even played; he just hung around the stage, which may explain why he’s playing with Mehdi at HARD NYE. His set was faster and much more focused. Only personal problem during this set was the shirtless guy who was unintentionally reverse grinding on me. UNCOMFORTABLE! I also must have had a sign on my forehead that night that said, “I love taking group pictures, give me a try”. It was during this set that I took one of many pictures for people. Highlight of his set was watching all of the hands in the air. Some were open hands going up and down to the beat of the song. Some were pumping fist. Some were salutes. Some were furious and some were calm, but it showed how in tune the crowd was with his set.

FYI. Both stage setups were a vast improvement to last year. The lineup may have been weak but they didn’t scrimp on trusts, lights or video screens. MY NECK would like to thank you for moving the inside stage to the ground versus the second floor from last year.

I went inside Expo Hall to catch Don Rimini. He reminded me of a high Jason Segal. It was a MEAT AND POTATOES set. He sang with the songs and having a good time. It was partially full, so much so that I hung out on the rail for a bit. He was just OK.

TACOS. Best deal of the weekend: 3 pork, chicken, or beef tacos for $7.00. I had the pork because they were cooked with onions. A little lime and my serious face turned into one that looked like I just made love to a beautiful woman. I know, I know, that’s not the best visual, but the tacos were good.

I went back to the HARD Stage for a spot to see Blood Beetroots. It was packed, to the point that people turned around when you bumped into them. Found a secure spot and waited for them to come out. Out they came and up came everyone for a mad bum rush. It was impossible to enjoy the experience and have to maneuver myself to stay in place while people around me kept coming and trying to get closer to the stage. I will say this: their set at HARD was much more entertaining than their Coachella performance and I don’t mean because Steve wasn’t there on a microphone. They started out the first few minutes with fast, easier going beats then worked their way into their chainsaw grinding one that everyone associates them with.

2MANYDJS aka Radio Soulwax. I have plenty of their work and understand the variety in their song choices. I may not understand WHY they actually play some of those funky 70’s AM radio songs, but I understand that it’s their style to do so. Watching and watching then see the Radio Soulwax banner come down and they start playing THE GOSSIP and up on the screen is song’s the album cover and parts of the cover are animated. I had no idea that this was going to happen. I love that song, first of all, but to hear it being played so loud along with the animation blew me away. But no, that was not the end of it. They kept mixing songs and the album covers continued to stage along with the animation through the entire set. You could have THROWN SHIT IN MY MOUTH for the following hour and a half, which seemed like only 45 minutes. My mouth stayed open in awe that entire time, with the exception of when I covered my mouth to gafaugh and laugh at some of the shit that was happening on the screen. THAT SET WAS BRILLIANT!!! Final word, the scrimmage line has been moved by these guys and many DJs will never have a chance to cross it.

Deadmau5 aka Joel Zimmerman. I counted 5 Deadmau5 costume head that night: 3 red, 2 blue, 1 with the eyes lighting up and one fucked up looking one made out of paper mache. They started making a conga line from the right side shorty before he came on. They brought out what looked like 20-24 thin lights to the stage that reminded me of Simian Mobile Disco. The robo mouse graphics that show the head being put together starts along with start up music and he comes out on stage. The crowd is cheering like crazy. He starts playing and it’s on. Honestly, I was not impressed with last year’s performance at HARD, mostly because I didn’t see it, but I am in love with that essential mix. Some of the best two hours you can ever spend are with that mix. It was late and I was tired. I started looking at my watch. He’s playing that airy woosh woosh woosh… woosh woosh woosh, then another song comes on. Very much like the essential mix, he’s layered up the build until it just HITS ME IN THE HEAD, and he’s off and has the crowd, along with myself going. I’m bopping my head and in tuned with what is going on. I completely forget about being inattentive earlier and of watching the time. The light man appeared to put his best work on this set, all varieties of red and white.

SPUDNUTS. I’m in a weight competition right now and failing miserably. What’s the best way to get back on track? DONUTS! We walked past the Vagabond and headed towards Spudnuts for a donut or two. All of them looked so shiny and fresh. I take a maple bar and a TRIPLE THREAT (chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, along with chocolate sprinkles). I take a bite of the maple bar and it melts in my mouth, so fresh that part of the maple frosting stuck on the bag.

That was my Friday.

Damn Jewface you make my night seem like a cakewalk.

My review (if anyone still cares)

I planned to leave at 6 to the hotel. My friends lag so fucking much. I didnt get to the hotel til 830 then it took those fuckers 45 mins to get dressed. Wow! Why does it take so long?

We get there and Buraka is tearing shit up and im sad cause by the time I get in I'm a catch 5 mins of it. SO I go to will call and it takes me 2.12830 seconds to get my ticket. Sweet. Then I'm going to the back of the lawn with 1/2 the people yelling sunflower and half yelling green man. Then within 30 seconds I lose my ticket. And im like oh shit so we look up and down where we walked and couldnt find it. Then 4 mins later we find a ticket and were like yes and im so relieved. A roller coaster of emotions.

THEN.. As the line moves faster i look at it and its the receipt ticket that was attached to the ticket for some Indian guy. I search again and nothing. So I go to will call see if they can help. ( I lie and say I got jacked) They say talk to security security says talk to them. Idiots.

So then I just get all the money I have $80 and look for scalped tickets. 1st person i see is this girl from last halloween whose number I got. Hella random. I ask how much and she says $150. I laugh at her. She says I wouldnt sell it to you anyway it's hella fake. So thanks I guess. I keep walking. This mexican guys says tickets $100. I say I got 80 he says come on you aint got a 100 and i said nah what can we do? I got weed on me. He thinks and then I guess his fucking over see-er some white guy is like dude its sold out dont sell that shit for cheaper.

So then I go up to this black guy selling tickets (the only other person I see selling so my last resort) he says $100. I only got 80 he says sorry. I offer weed he doesnt smoke. Then he sells 2 tickets 100 a pop. We talk and he mentions how he bought 40 and sold them all except the last one he has. So im just sitting there bout to just say fuck everything and get a cab back to my hotel and see if I buy porn when he says "Fuck my phones dying" then he calls his homie and says aye my phones bout to die can i sell it to this dude for 80? Dude says yes. I get the ticket. I say thank you so much. He says no prob just buy my album.

So I get my ticket and just run. Sad I missed the 2 acts I wanted to see the most. I mean I kinda saw the last 10 mins of Major Lazer but not the same.

Then pop my 2 mollies and I swear I have never had drugs kick in so fast. Literally in under 5 mins I took off.

Basement Jaxx (woooow) no words to describe it. Utterly amazing. I stay for Justice and we must have different tastes because the beginning of their set sucks to me and I love Justice. So I went to see Crookers (feat Naked bitches on stage) and they brought that shit so dirty. The bass was unforgiving. Glad I finally saw them.

Then I go back out to Justice and then they were in the groove and I enjoyed it (not as much as last year) mad I missed when they played Ducksauce tho.

Then went back and caught some of that rat guy. And wow he impressed me. He did pretty well for himself. Made me a fan. I never hated him just didnt get the hype but I can dig it now.

Then went for some 2many DJs because they blocked the doors. And hearing A Millie, MGMT among others really made my night. The vdjs or whatever really didnt nothing for me it was actually corny but music wise it was just a fun ass set.

Then I was going inside and I see the alien autopsy crew but at first I thought it was paramedics and someone died and I got really sad. Then I stayed for Zombie nation in the back on the floor. I was tired. Went outside for modselketor but i didnt see the autopsy and it was too cold. Stayed inside for all of Zombie Nation. Went to the hotel. Fuck an afterparty. Watched bulletproof and went home.

did justice drop any new edits or new tracks? anyone know?

They played one of SebastiAn's new and currently unreleased tracks:

If they played any new Justice material, it was nothing I would have recognized as sounding like something they would make.

Does anyone know the name of the Pursuit of Happiness remix Steve Aoki dropped? It was the first song I heard going into HARD and after all my bullshit it was oh so fitting

Hey Coachella Peeps:

My BF just woke up after a 10 hr nap. Poor guy's head is throbbing and he's still very shaken by what happened, but I read him your comments and he insisted I log back on and tell you all thank you for the well wishes. (He's also stopped making fun of me for conversing with people on a messageboard. ha ha.) In the last 24 hrs we've experienced the best and the worst of humanity. I'm still incredibly angry at the men who did this, but I'm also enormously grateful for the kindness of others.

I'm grateful for the random stranger who saw us struggling after the attack, pulled over and helped us into her car and drove us to the hospital. She didn't have to do that. We got blood on her back seat and yet she refused to give me her contact information so that we could pay her for the damage.

I'm grateful to the er nurses and doctor who attended to my bf promptly and with a great deal of care. They probably see dozens of worse cases every day yet they could see we were both in a state of shock and they took such great care of us. I'm grateful to the old woman seated next to me when I was alone in the ER waiting room without my cell phone (and friend's #s) and without a way to contact anyone. When the adrenalin ran out and the shock wore off, I just lost it. She was so sweet and tried to comfort me, even when I got a little short with her because I was so nervous and had no way to get in touch with my friends.

I'm grateful to the LAPD detective who treated us respectfully and has remained in contact with us as they attempt to find these guys. He's LAPD; I know he has bigger fish to fry, but he never dismissed us or treated us as an insignificant mugging.

I'm grateful to my friends whose Halloween was also ruined and to other friends who heard about what happened and reached out to us last night and today. And I'm grateful to you guys for your kind words and your good wishes.

My BF pointed out something I hadn't thought of. These assholes were on the street at twilight on Halloween night. They were either looking for Halloween revelers on their way to parties or, even worse, trick or treaters. We're not happy that this happened to us, but we'd much rather it be us than some poor kids who would then forever associate Halloween with real violence.

And I'd just like to reiterate that I still have lots of faith in L.A., in HARD and in Mr. Richards. No one's perfect and I'm sure some of you might have legitimate gripes about this or that, but just because he's found a successful business model for doing what he loves, it doesn't mean that he doesn't care deeply about the music and about the experience each of us has at one of his events and if I'm in town on NYE, I look forward to buying some of you a drink at HARD NYE and dancing my ass off with Mr. Richards & Co.

Okay, I'll stop before this turns into a Crash-esque Hallmark card about the fabric of humanity in Los Angeles. Anyway, keep those reviews coming. The more details the better! (FatBastard and WhyTheLongFace, nice work! Sorry you missed Buraka, but at least they're touring, right?)

JewFace~ God, I'm so sorry to read about what happened! While it's a relief that you're both okay, it's distressing to think those assholes are still out there. In your last post you mentioned this...

When I first read your story, my first thought was about all the peeps that walked to the venue, and then of course all the young girls dressed/undressed in their Rave attire, or the peeps running around "ecstatically," not even thinking about events like yours. They're buzzed, and vulnerable to being prey, and who knows what kind of freaks and assholes are out looking for shit like that!

Anyway, you mentioned that it happened 1/4 mile from home. Is there anyway you'd be able to find out if someone may have seen something. A resident, someone walking? (I know it's the last place you probably care to go, but if it was a neighborhood, there's a chance you may have had a witness with descriptions...Never know...)

BTW...:thu on the BF!

I'm at school right now still feeling hungover/exhausted from the weekend :P. I had a lot of fun. My favorites were bloody beetroots, crookers, and deadmau5...I didn't really enjoy 2manydjs........................

Also, this whole trip made me appreciate SJSU.... I'm very happy I don't go to USC... seems like such a shitty town. I'm so happy to be home, couldn't wait to get the fuck out of LA.

An update on the situation-

Devin I would try and email HARDfest and let them know what happened and maybe they can offer you something in return.

I know a lot of you rip on Gary for whatnot but the guys cares. Unlike a lot of other promoters the guys takes everything personally and works incredibly hard to make sure everyone has the best time. You could tell this past weekend how they learned their lessons and took the extra steps to ensure the event was a success. As long as they keep bringing the quality lineups and keep their events away from the Forum, I will continue to go and I hope the rest of the crew on here will join me.

As I sit here at work, having to minimalize the screen every 5min, I cant stop thinking about how much fun it was meeting all of you. Seeing Basement Jaxx with sophia, miranda, alex, chris, matt, devin, bobby, and everyone else (sorry meeting so many people kinda made it a blur) was definitely the highlight of the weekend and to those who didn't make it I look forward to future meetups. lll post my full review of Saturday when I get off work.... I had a great time...that is until we got to the parking lot and saw that my car had been broken into....$20 to USC for no security whatsoever. And I don't know if you remember, but I met you Electrojan at the end of the night when deadmau5 started, i was wearing an orange tank top.

Can't wait to hear everyone's experiences...

Yup i remember ya. I love how among the 15,000 people that were all dancing we ended up randomly next to each other, talked for like 20min, and then realized we were in the forum haha. Sorry if I seemed kinda out of it and leaving abruptly.... I was dehydrated, hungry, and exhausted from the long soberish night and started feeling sick so I rushed outta there. Hope you had fun and look forward to seeing you again

Basement Jaxx saved my life. I could have watched that set and left and been completely satisfied. I am thoroughly content with my decision to keep my HARD ticket and show up Saturday. After waiting in line the ticket lady wouldn't accept my Forum ticket so I had to go back and exchange it at Groovetickets. Minor setback but it did cause me to miss Buraka.

Basement Jaxx clearly owned the night :D Vula on stage was amazing and she just kept beating us down. I had all my ravers around me and everyone was in disbelief. Red Alert, Jump N' Shout, Twerk it, Where's Your Head At?, and a few more album tracks were played. Visuals were on point and the owl was everywhere! HOO HOO!!! My costume definitely made me feel one with the Jaxx, and the vibes were all there. Top notch energy only the funkaliscious Jaxx can bring. I thank everyone for sharing the moment with me, it meant a lot. I felt like I was seeing them live again. I CANNOT WAIT for the chance to see them at Coachella. It will be insane.

BJ DJ FOR THE WIN!

Our Coachella Board team went through some major trials this weekend. I am glad everyone is safe at this moment and we just have to work on keeping optimistic in this world. There's too many people that don't understand the decency we do. JewFace check your PM's :) :) :)

An update on the situation-

For the past few months Ive been in contact with Gary about questions people have had on HARD events and one of the things I brought up was the discussions and comments of the members of this board. He pledged that he would always be there to answer questions and help us out if we needed it.... Similar to how I found this forum, ( I'm assuming unless someone here told him) Gary was searching around, found this thread, and read about Jewface's horrendous story. Yesterday he sent me a message on facebook trying to help out so i forwarded the message onto Andrew and hopefully that can offer something good after the horrendous events this past weekend. Devin after I read the message a few more times and not knowing about Andrews situation I realized that the message was directed at him and his story. In my response to Gary I mentioned two different ordeals that happened, one of them yours, so I would try and email HARDfest and let them know what happened and maybe they can offer you something in return.

I know a lot of you rip on Gary for whatnot but the guys cares. Unlike a lot of other promoters the guys takes everything personally and works incredibly hard to make sure everyone has the best time. No one was hurt more then Gary after HARD Summer and you could tell this past weekend how they learned their lessons and took the extra steps to ensure the event was a success. As long as they keep bringing the quality lineups and keep their events away from the Forum, I will continue to go and I hope the rest of the crew on here will join me.

I %uck around in jest about Gary, but your ongoing communications let me know he has been listening. I hope him or someone from his staff visited Monster Massive on Saturday. This would have given them a great opportunity to view the issues they would have faced if they had considered "going big" this year or next year.

If it wasn't for LAPD, there surely would have been a riot on Saturday. Lots of issues. I'll provide details in the other thread tonight.

An organization promoting an event on Halloween has to consider a large portion of the audience is there simply to get drunk, high, laid, or a combination of the three. Music is secondary. I would not be surprised if LAPD was sending out an invoice to Monster Massive by the end of today.

I forget who it was but someone on here sent Gary a message asking for no conflict between 2 certain artist and he promised that, then time slots came out and those 2 acts were in direct conflict. I know it's minor and not expected of a promoter to work around someones small request, but don't promise it and then make that exact thing happen. I'm probably hate Gary more than anyone on here, i really don't know why i hate him so much, but i do know why i wont give him any of my money.

If I may add my 2 cents. Good party last night. The alcohol area was an embarrassment. HARD has organized this properly in the past, but they scored a massive fail this year. Last year's HARD Haunted had a sizeable 21+ area with a separate ID check at the door. HARD 13 had multiple bars. This year, 45 min+ line to get inside the booze "lounge" and then another 15+ mins to get a drink. It's like they decided "Everyone is eating pills/underage, fuck anyone that wants to have a cocktail." If your plan for the evening is to roll/fry/etc, that's cool, I've had plenty of those evenings. But if you wanted a drink you had to miss an entire set. That is complete garbage.

-Joe

This makes me sad. I guess Gary doesn't care about V.I.P. as much as let's say...go ventures or insomniac.

this is actually not true. The person who said that was assuming that Daedelus was going to have the earlier special guest slot when in fact he was given the set closing inside. Daedelus conflicted with Deadmau5

I'm not going to go searching for the info, but you are probably right and i stand corrected. I'm just that guy trying to point out as many negatives as i can about Gary, just trying to spread some hate. After every HARD event i will say that i find more and more people mad about some stunt he pulled with the event, but i've talked enough about this in this thread among others so i will leave it alone.

LOL yeah i know what you mean daryll.. if i heard any more goddamn music i was gonna have to kill someone........

it was great hanging with everyone again, and meeting a few new people from here.. vagabond is a prime locale for any any any Shrine show, and partying at the adventurer went on for days and nights..

yeah, not true.. that person was me, and i convinced gary not to let Daedelus conflict with Beetroots, which meant that Daedelus would close (which he did).. i had also called it about Switch (eh).. as much as i was looking forward to Daedelus (3rd most on lineup), i was fairly disappointed, with the very short set he got (they shut him down 25min early..) that had just really gotten started..

Bloody Beetroots were fucking amazing, of course.. i loved 2ManyDJs the first night, but got impatient hearing the same set the next night.. Crookers did a very rave set, no MC, only one remix single i can recall (Thunderstruck), except for their closer.. the rest was mostly originals and some new stuff.. they both came out dressed as Steve Aoki, which was kinda funny.. Aoki & Diplo and some others were all on stage messing around the whole time too... i had heard Kid Sister showed up during Aoki..

Harvard Bass was really good, A-Trak pleased, Major Lazer was awsome, BJDJ ruled and was easily the least predictable set of the weekend, only caught the end of Justice unfortunately, but Modeselektor had an amazing closing set..

Got backstage at the outdoor stage on Friday after watching Bloody Beetroots from the front railing, watched 2ManyDJs sidestage, briefly met Deadmau5 just before he put his mask on.. hung out for a bit in the Beetroots trailer but they had already left.. snuck backstage inside on Saturday and got some okay pics/vids of Deadmau5's 2nd set from up on the balcony..

i may have a bootleg of Crookers set.. i'm still gonna have to check it & see how the quality is..

for everyone who tried getting ahold of me after about 4pm saturday, sorry bout my phone taking a massive crap.. what a great fuckin crew though :)

I LOVE ALL OF YOU PEOPLE :D :D :D

BEST HALLOWEEN EVER! Even better than Trick or Treating when I was 7 years old. Cynthia and I had a great time, and were happy to meet some new friends and boardies. We stopped by the Adventurer about 5:30pm to say hi to Feather and the Rave team (and to donate to the afterparty). Thanks for the candee braclets Feather, and great meeting you djandrews and nbvcide. Also had the pleasure of meeting boardie Brittany during BJDJ. It was fun experiencing Crookers with you Brittany! We tried to find Feather and the team during BJDJ set but had no luck. We were with you in spirit Rave Team. We called it a night after Crookers. We made the mistake of sitting down in VIP and our poor old bodies just lost their groove. We heard some of Justice while walking back to the Raddison, and I'm sorta sorry we missed that set. They sounded solid.

No doubt, BasementJaxx DJ set was a great surprise. I was expecting something along the lines of Chemical Brothers in the Sahara last year, but was totally blown away by how they threw it down - much harder and dirtier than I had expected, and the singer was fantastic, the girl had moves too.

My second favorite performance was Major Lazer, and not just because I was wearing a ML costume. I can imagine ML being in the Sahara in 2010, in fact I predict it. Major Lazer for 2010! Crookers did a great set, and I love the tracks they played. I didn't feel like the sound system inside was fitting for Crookers performance. I wanted another Bass Mosh Pit (or a Wall of PLUR, or a PLURnado) to sponteaneously break out. That sound system outside could have supported such a phenomenon. The sound outside was so soul shattering that it killed more zombies than Major Lazer did in his whole zombie killin career. The accustics and lighting were great too. Overall HHM09 was a solid line-up, and the whole event totally made up for the fiasco that was HARD Summer.

Like everyone else I'm shocked and saddend to hear about what happened to JF and his bf, and Devin. My thoughts are with you guys, and I send positive PLUR vibrations your way!

My only complaint for the event was the bar/alcohol situation. I paid extra for VIP (unlimited premium drinks) but the bar closed at midnight. We only had three drinks. Not such a big deal as I didn't want the alcohol to interfere with our roll. What I was more disturbed about was the lack of bartenders and the crazy line for general drinks. I wanted to buy our friend Brittany a drink, but the line was so crazy long it would have taken forever. Brittany and bf, I owe you one!

Gary and HARD have redeemed themselves, AND WE ALL WIN!!!

Hope to see you all for New Years Eve!

jewface, i'm sorry you guys got mugged. that neighborhood seems very shady... i was feeling very paranoid walking around alone saturday night (my bf was sick in the hotel room). thank you forest/djdharma for keeping me company!! seriously 5 minutes after we separated, i had some cheesy guy all over me trying to kiss me (umm vampire teeth lol) and he even tried to put his hand down my tights...wtf... luckily my bf forced himself to join me right about when deadmau5 came on. so really i was only alone for about 30 mins that night.

forest- next time i'm in socal or coachella, we will have a beer :). p.s. did the other boardies meet up somewhere else during basement jaxx?

shinichi has always played that song last the three times I've seen him... but I don't know what it is, I'll do some digging for ya...

and regarding the pursuit of happiness, did it sound like something Benny Benassi would have made? Cause he's got the only remix of the song that's actually been released: http://startoftheline.com/?p=1515

I used my height and Major Lazer super vision to try and find The Rave Team during BJ, but to no avail. You would think your Vampire teeth and all that blood would have scared away any zombies. I hope you had a great time. And yes, we'll all have to get together soon and do it again. HARD NYE?

I actually wrote a long review of Friday after getting home that night but closed the browser and was too fucked up to rewrite it.

I only went Friday. It was amazing.
I would just like to say that a ridiculous amount of people had fake tickets.

When I first arrived the line I got into turned into a cluster fuck and didn't move for a good 45 minutes. However all the other lines were moving along fine. I finally got through security and my ticket wouldn't scan. I was freaking the fuck out because I bought it through groove tickets. Luckily a supervisor told the lady to keep scanning it and after like 10 minutes it went through. It was weird but at least it worked out. After this everything fell in place to make a great night.

Danger- I watched some of it. I wasn't really feeling it at the time so I left.

Harvard Bass was killing it in the Expo Hall.

A-Track- I've been wanting to see him for some time and I was not disappointed.

The Bloody Beetroots- Fucking great.

2 Many DJs- The main reason I bought a ticket for HARD. This set was amazing and easily my favorite of the night. They gave me a Depeche Mode track and a New Order track in one set I really couldn't have been happier. I <3 Radio Soulwax

Deadmau5- I decided to give him another try. At first it was fun then he lost me.

Daedalus- Good set but I was way too tired to enjoy it. I was just about to leave and his got cut short.

It was great raving with everyone again and also seeing everyone afterward on Saturday.

Also nice meeting everyone I hadn't met.

If they played any new Justice material, it was nothing I would have recognized as sounding like something they would make.

I was going to log on and whine about the fact that I had to miss Saturday due to a friend's illness. Jaxx, Justice, Crookers, Buraka, Deadmaus, 2ManyDJs, Major Lazer, etc. all in one night! It's heartbreaking, really. Then, I read JewFace's account of his evening. I'm done feeling sorry for myself.

JewFace, I'm so sorry to hear about the terrible night you had. Sounds like you have a good perspective on things. I think I'd still be feeling angry if I were you. I see you're in LA, but if you decide to come down to the Casbah for the Buraka Som Sistema show, let me know. I read your account to my friends and we all felt so bad for you that we'd like to pitch in and buy you and your boyfriend tickets for Buraka if you're coming down here that night. It can't make up for the ordeal you guys went through, but you know... it's a little ray of light. If not, be well. :)

I'm glad everyone else had such an amazing time. I know where I'll be next Halloween.

HHM, Saturday
So I get to the adventurer around 6pm. Google maps failed me and got lost for about 37 minutes before I found the hotel. I Park my car, find the room, crack open some beers. Meet & Greet the boardies, pre-funk yadah yadah yadah. NBV and I end up leaving the hotel around…..8, we are in the fest by 930. (as we left, our drunk neighbor flung herself into NBV’s arms, asking for sex. I think she copped a feel). We see Russ at the front, and I get to meet him for the first time. he apparently came out to do work that night, as he was dressed up as a construction worker. Hard hat and everything.

Me and wes grab some Gatorade, food while catching the end of Buraka (I think it was buraka). We got those tacos that that fat bastard was talking about. We got the chicken and carne. The girl behind the table selling waters was getting so down to the music. I mean really understanding it, while having a blast and selling water at the same time. This is where the night began to become fun and I could tell I made the right decision. The vibe was mos definitely there. Some attendees passed by and yelled “oh hell yea, that girl is sik” reffering to the water girl. We catch some of Major Lazor. (major lazor gets a 7/10)

So we meet up with everyone from the board. I smoke out everyone who wants to smoke chornic, and ingest my party favors. The night begins to get blurry from this point on for me. I have to rethink everything really hard to remember the events in sequential order.
Bassment Jaxx has this errie wizard of oz opening:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D-e_X8OEEpg&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D-e_X8OEEpg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I am immediately pulled in by this. I had never listened to any of BJs stuff before saturday so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I just know feather and a lot of other boardies swear by them. Im sure you have all heard by now about how well they did, ill just say that by the time they dropped a tricked out version of Queens Boehmian Rhapsody, it was basically like “God, take me now. Im ready.” BJ gets a (30/10)

Im not sure if justice went on before 2manydj’s, but ill just talk about justice. They were really good. I think it was daft fro (I could be wrong) who said “they were like the cool kids on the block” when talking about justice at hhm. They get a 9/10. I really liked it. Im not really quite sure how to put that set into words, sorry.

2manydj’s, I was just really really messed up at this point. All I remember is them dropping MGMT Kids.

……………we eventually get back to the hotel. Djandrews25 is there before us from MM and we talk about the party. He tries to get me to eat mushrooms, and was very close. I somehow eluded it. Everyone begins showing up to the room. Daft and I are the last ones standing drinking beers and smoking chronic well into the late afternoon. we ended up getting the room for another night, as I came up with the brilliant idea to decompress at Deep Los Angeles. I LOVE DEEP! The thing is, I was raving so hard, I lost my ID at HHM. And a gram of chronic. Serious bummer. Not that serious though as there were too many great things to even be bummed about that for a split second. So instead of deep, we (feather, alex, whip at this point) opt to grab some food. Head back to the room, crack open a few more beers while we watch The Hangover till about 3am. Mike Tyson is so fucking funny in that movie. What a fucking great weekend.

JewFace, im sorry that happened to you. Me and Feather were talking about you in the hotel on Saturday, saying how we were looking forward to meeting you. Good to see you are still in good spirits.

It was nice to meet everyone I hadn’t met before. Good seeing all of you. All of you. HHM is definitely at the top of my list for plans next Halloween. It was such a killer pawrty.

wish i coulda caught some of Mixhell and Rimini, don't know where i was when they were on.. Buraka Som Sistema was DEF better at Coachella this year..

i've heard mixed reviews about 2ManyDJs though, i loved it the first night, not so much the next night.. i think Headstruck called their friday performance the 'worst set i've seen in ten years'..

listening to my Crookers recording.. remembered one of my fav/unexpected moments of the weekend.. "Why Don't You Do Right" (the 40's song covered by Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit) mixed into an awesome remix of Benassi's "Satisfaction".. i'm gonna see if i can run this bootleg by sin or kings and see if they know anyway to clean it up a little.. a little bass-y (i like that though), but as is, it's about 90% listenable now..

Lagged hardcore, didn't make it to pre-party, and of course missed an Osawa set for like the 3rd time, oh well....my own fault. But I finally enter 10ish, Aoki is on, Kid Sister sing'n "Right Hand Hi", grabed some h20, headed outside to meetup.

Wasn't paying fine attention to the Major Lazer set to be honest. It was all about:

BJ
MTHRFCKN
DJ

The live vocals were VERY MUCH APPRECIATED~! Thanks Vula & Slarta John for rolling to the party. Funkiest set of the year, the vibe was awesome! Setlist was perfect, nothing but big smiles, and people jacking body. Seriously want to remember the name of the dubstep track they dropped...

Justice & Crookers layed it down, was good fun. Was totally fine with jamming to 2manydjs again! And Modeselektor, dealing out the icing for all your cake right there.

Sad to hear about your night Jewface, looks like it was a crazy one for a number of boardies =\

MDA is a related, but different structure compared to MDMA. There is less of a come down (even though MDMA isn't that bad, it's the pills that get ya *shudders*) and it's more hallucinogenic than MDMA. Less body high, more visual & mental high. sorta like 2C-B/I I guess...

What a great party. The outdoor stage was orgasmic on Saturday night. Every act was on top of things, especially the Jaxx and Modeselektor. Highlights of the night for me for sure. I hope more youtube vids of Basement Jaxx surface. What an epic moment it was when they played that drawn out version of Do Your Thing at the end of their set (or maybe it just seemed drawn out because of the drugs...). It was seriously gospel status. Me and my buddies were raising our arms and shaking our hands like we were in a baptist church in the south. Beautiful stuff!

my.sat

After an enjoyable Friday music and meeting Wes, Alex, and Sean at the Vagabond, I went into Saturday excited about the special guests, meeting up with others from the board, and most of all seeing Basement Jaxx. Pregaming with friends from USC around 8, the plan was to leave at 8:30 to catch Buraka and/or Osawa and then get in contact with some boardies for my first real meetup… An hour and a half later we still hadnt left yet, the girls were being lame, and the night had not gotten off to a good start. After heading over the non existent line of the night before now stretched 5 blocks and I soon realized that there was zero chance I would get to see either artist. Moving quickly the line ended up only taking 25 min, I run into nbv and sd right when I get in and then I realize we had arrived at the time I dreaded most, Steve Aoki v. Major Lazer. I don’t like Aoki and I really don’t like Major Lazer. I don’t know what it is, but the whole Caribbean electro and my brain don’t just don’t like each other. Ive tried three times and its always a fun.fail. With my friends, who had already made me late, being lame and not wanting to get close, I texted feather and devin the following

“left side in between the two projectors, tall white kid in hard hat with drawing on it and a orange reflective vest”

5min later I ditched my friend, dropped my candy, and met up with the crew. This decision will forever go down as one of the best of my plur career.

With 30min to kill before the Jaxx took the stage, we all sat around talking, getting to know each other and trying to put faces to tags. As a pretty socially conservative person (I like to party, a lot, just usually only with people I know) this meetup and the whole internet friends thing at first weirded me out and I was a little hesitant to really get personal. But as I mentioned previously there is just something about these kind of activities that brings out the best in people and within minutes of seeing the great connection everyone had at the meetup I was comfortable, relaxed, and for the first time I was enjoying the night. After ML exited the stage we got up and led by featherjaxx moved our way closer to the JAXX.

For me there are two scenarios that can make a set fun; being with someone that knows the artists well or being with a group that knows nothing at all and just goes with it. Having listened to Singles over the past month and then being incredibly dissapointed with their recent mixtape, I had little expectations for the set and just wanted to hear “Wheres Your Head At.” At 11:35 the guys entered the stage, one wearing the funniest beard/wig and pirate hat ive ever seen, and the other in a witch hat / costume. Leading with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and dropping it into Red Alert the Jaxx had set a tone on the dancefloor that would last for the rest of the night. From dirty dirty dubstep, to their remix of Queen, and adding in their original tracks like “Good Luck” and “Romeo” the set was high energy and got the floor moving. And the singers were amazing! The females voice in person sounds even better then it does on the album and the male offered the best rapping and mcing Ive seen from a dj set by not talking over the music and adding fill when the music was low. The guys finished their set with “Wheres Your Head At” at which point I picked my face off the ground and proclaimed to the entire crowd with “ So I guess the guys know how to DJ also.”

Moving back to the meetup spot we caught the beginning of Justice which after 5 minutes was already better then last years entire set and then moved inside to see Crookers. Catching a fun set that featured the guys dressed as Steve Aoki (As Steve Aoki and Diplo were chilling right behind them haha) and one that was much more ravey and had Phra (tall bald guy in Crookers) handling the decks most of the time the selection was solid but i wish theyd played more of the hits. One of the funniest moments of either day was when Diplos dancers pulled the Borat bathingsuit girl on stage who proceeded to flash a great pair of tits and an awesome body for a good 20min to the crowd. The sound system was insane inside which made it all the better as the beat dropped and my insides shook. After an hour or so it was so hot that we moved outside and met up with the crew again. With half of us having seen their set last night and the other half curious we moved to the very front of 2ManyDJ’s and witnessed them play a similar set to the night before that was on point, well mixed, and featured some new Oizo tracks among others.

After 2ManyDJ’s the masses once again flocked to Deadmau5 leaving the HARD stage pretty open. After 20min or so we explored the Expo hall that was packed but without music as the set up for the mau5 was talking place, walked through, ran into Gaspard from Justice and So-Me from ….. yeah? said hello then went outside to see Modeselektor close it out. Id listened to podcasts before and wasn’t too impressed so I went in without any real expectations. And how oh how that would change. Playing a high energy set that the crowd was lovin, the energy was awesome and made for a great set to close out the two days of incredible music. Add to that the Fantatsic Nobodies “Alien Autopsy” which included a dissection of a fake alien body and the guys proceeding to pull put its inners and throw them into the audience (in reality it was spagetti and rolls of toilet paper) The spagetti not so much, but the tp made for an awesome visual and added a dimension to the show that brought the stage into the audience as the rolls unraveled and flew all over the place. At 2:57am (daylight savings time) the sound guys cut the speakers but left the monitors on behind the stage. Pissed off and wanting to keep playing the guys turned their monitor speakers to the audience and kept playing haha. Then when attempting to say goodbye the sound guy cut the mic which brought a sour ending to an otherwise perfect set.

Joined up at the Adventurer of the after party and got to meet Andrew and Matt so that was fun. Buying beer at Food4Less on Century Boulevard at 6am was an experience in itself. Sorry for the long review but the night was trully one I will never forget. For those of you that were there it was awesome getting to meet u and for those that couldn’t make it I look forward to seeing you all in the future. Ill try and post some pics when I get home and im working on a post of the best music from the weekend on the blog.

the stuff I had was so pure I cant even start to explain how awesome I felt at this. It was definitely a lighter high but waaay more intense. And I didnt have a hangover or depressed feeling the next day which is something Ive gotten every other time ive rolled.
I need some of that! My bf and I bought from a stranger Friday night and it was such a subtle high that I was like, did we just pay for caffeine pills? haha we had fun anyway but then the next day my bf was too hungover to make it Saturday and I had to go all alone! Anyway, I'm still feeling shitty.

listening to my Crookers recording.. remembered one of my fav/unexpected moments of the weekend..

I loved that song! I tried to record it but failed... :(

Anyone have a video of that hot, almost naked, girl who was dancing on stage? Thought it was pretty hilarious when the girl from buraka was dancing with/humping her.

I think we may have been to far forward (if there is such a thing). I was looking for nbvcide because i remembered you as being tall when we met earlier at the Adventurer.
So many people, so many costumes, so many chemicals.

yeah, im prob easy to spot, but i was constantly going back & forth between the 2 stages, and back & forth from the very front to the very back lol i missed the end of BJDJ (i went inside after Bohemian Rhapsody i believe) to catch Crookers, and didn't make it back out until the last 15 of Justice.. and i think i caught more of Deadmau5 part deux than i did of 1TooManyTimesDJs (sorry, i just woke up five min. ago..), but yeah, people are right about the crowd on friday, it wasn't nearly as loud (Gary played everything extra careful that first night) and the crowd wasn't nearly into it enough, so i ended up heading up to the rail to catch Bloody Beetroots (needed to be up where the vibe and pounding bass were).. but yeah, pretty much everytime i needed to find the group i'd just wander until i found one person, the rest usually weren't far..

Danger was awesome and played the perfect set to start two incredible days of music. One of the cool things he did was pick up the controller (He uses Ableton Live) and show the crowd what he was doing. He also looking like he was having so much fun rockin out to the set that it created a great vibe in the crowd.

Id describe the crowd for his set like Fake Bloods at EDC in that the crowd consisted of a few people that knew every drop and everyone else who had no idea what was going on. Dancing kinda struggled but all in all we made the best of it.

I think he'd made a great daytime artist for the Sahara

this is pretty dead on, but i think thats partly because danger is only just now starting to get some real attention. dancing to danger was kinda hard but i dont think his music is necessarily ideally suited for dancing. all things considered, DANGER FOR 2010!

Soulwax does not do DJ sets and you will never, or i guess should never, see it billed as a Soulwax DJ set. There is Soulwax which is the live band, then there is 2manyDJ's which is the 2 brothers doing a DJ set, then you have As Heard on Radio Soulwax which is again the 2 borthers DJing but doing a lot wider genre of music. I have also heard of As Heard on Radio Soulwax being what they call it when Soulwax and 2manyDJs both do a set in one night. I will tell you this though, out of any group/band/person out there these dudes tour Harder and bigger than anyone. Watch the movie Part of the Weekend Never Dies on google or buy it, you will see what im talking about.

Yeah, I don't remember Hasir myself, but my friends said they did. Yeah, I got right upfront for Hyper Hyper.....one of the more intensely awesome songs I have ever heard live.....

a list of recommended tracks from them would be greatly appreciated.

All of the ones mentioned plus Silikon (ft. Sasha Perera), Dieclubnummer, The White Flash (ft. Thom Yorke), Godspeed, Dancing Box and 2000007 (both ft. TTC), Vote or Die, I Love You, Turn Deaf, Concrete Jungle, and Weed Wid Da Macka (Modeselektor & Ninjaman)

I don't want to read the last 10 pages to catch up.. but let me just give a short review..

Buraka - Tight as fuck.. This is not a world music night, tonight is time to party!!! Maybe my favorite set

Major Lazer - WTF was this?

Basement Jaxx - Was off the chain, still not nearly as good as they are live, but still really fun. Probably my favorite DJ set by a group known mostly for produced work. Major plus for having their singer there as well.

Justice - Gay, boring

2ManyDjs - Interesting and fun, I've heard better sets from them still.

Modeselektor - Major disappointment, I totally thought it lacked compared to their Coachella set.. my brother and girlfriend both agreed.. We left half way through..

*** OTHER SHIT****

Parking - WAAAAAAY easier than I expected considering MM was a mile away.

Line to get in - Long but went really fast

Groovetickets Line - Holy fuck, got my tickets in less than 30 seconds.. fast groovetickets line ever.. or flavorous or whatever retarded name they have now.

No Bags - Retarded, it said no large bags, but they weren't letting girls bring in medium sized purses. I had to stash my girlfriends in some bush and carry her wallet and a bunch of other shit in my pockets.

The Crowd - OK, Kind of retarded with the typical Indie/Hipster/Raver vibe.. not as bad as MM.

The Set-up - Was cool.. Lighting was OK, had like 25 MACS on the mainstage and led inside the trussing... The projectors on the side of the building were waaay underpowered for what they needed, the visuals on there were weak too, mostly just the name of the artist which was hard to read (should have been outlined in white or purple). Sound was good and clean..

Inside the shrine - was gay and full of n00bs. The Photo set up by Rony Alwin was horrible.

Water/Food - I only saw one place with food and they had tacos.. Water was $4.. bullshit.. The staff was dancing and having fun where they sold waters.. too bad they didn't have fountain drinks.. my flasks would have appreciated it more!!

Right, cause Los Angeles doesn't possibly have enough Mexicans in it to have good Mexican food.
