Annie needs her own thread. With so many big releases this year to have come out already I think St. Vincent's Actor has been overlooked by many. She has one of the best voices live and made her TV debut last night on Letterman and was just fantastic. She has two CDs out right now, Marry Me (2007) and Actor (2009). Here are some samples of a few of her songs:

Marrow (Live on Letterman):

I have seen her 3 times this year and each time was enjoyable. I fully support this thread and her rise to the top of the music crop. "Laughing with a mouth of blood" is one of my favorites.

I also support all past and future collaborations with The National.

I saw her at Sasquatch and Bonnaroo and both sets were good. Actor is currently #8 as far as my favorite albums of 2009 go. And that's not a knock on it. I enjoy that album a lot. She's very talented and I hope she sticks around for a while.

Okay, I know I'm late to the party, but I just downloaded Actor and you're all absolutely right. This woman is bloody fantastic.

Question: does she always tour with such a large band or were those one-offs for Letterman and Kimmel? Anyone get the feeling her record company is hoping they have a Feist-like situation on their hands with St. Vincent?

I'm even later to this artist.

I enjoy when an artist/band releases a CD that "loops". Meaning, it flows so smoothly that the last song plays right into the first track. Since it's a new CD, it takes me a couple of tracks from the beginning to realize that the CD had finished.

Boourns
09-17-2009, 07:48 PM
She played with a full band at the el rey but the band on letterman looked fuller I believe. So I wasn't there but I heard she played solonat the masonic hall earlier this yeah. Imagine how Actor would sound live with a full orchestra. Make it happen, la phil!

Frank, I give you a lot of grief but this is one of those times where I side with you. Actor is easily Top 5 of the year, and gets better with every listen. Count me in for when she plays the Wiltern in December. (And why not? They (the Wiltern) have been on an out-of-nowhere roll this year, and after playing the El Rey she can sell it out).

Boourns
09-22-2009, 02:07 AM
The el rey show didn't sell out so I imagine it will most likely be there again, or possibly the Fonda since the tv appearances and extended coverage lately should have increased awareness. Or coachella.

I'm kind of over posters now because they cost way too much to frame and are too easily damaged before said framing.

I didn't used to buy shirts ever besides the occasional Coachella lineup shirt, but now I also have shirts from Glasto, Jarvis, St. Vincent, Asobi Seksu (three!), Radiohead (one official, one un), and Animal Collective ($5 bootleg).

What did the LA poster look like? I like the alpaca poster from last year's El Rey show.

Band t-shirts make the bulk of the t-shirts (and shirts in general) that I wear, especially when I leave the house.

Also I can't imagine paying $30 for a t-shirt; I know I've payed $25 in the past but now-a-days I balk at $20 unless it is a fantastic looking t-shirt for a band I love in a size that fits.

That's one of the unfortunate things when it comes to the concert going in Los Angeles, merch tends to be a little more expensive. That is aside from the $12-$18 drinks and the $10-20 parking.

Update on St.Vincent/David Byrne Collab

"I think we’ll probably finish it up by early next year and then put it out."

Early last year, David Byrne revealed that he and St Vincent's Annie Clark had begun work on an "on and off" brass ensemble-enriched project without any timetable. But during Clark's recent conversation with Pitchfork contributor Amanda Petrusich, the New York singer-songwriter shed new light on the forthcoming release.

"We’ve written a good deal of a record together and recorded about half of it," said Clark. "It’s very split down the middle between who writes lyrics and who sings and who came to the other with the first musical idea, it's very much egalitarian in that way, but natural. I think we'll probably finish it up by early next year and then put it out."

She added that the collaboration was inspired by the Björk/Dirty Projectors collaboration Mount Wittenberg Orca, which originally debuted at Housing Works in New York City.

Decent review with 1 genuine criticism.

I loved the Vancouver show. Of course I was 5 feet in front of her, get a pick, setlist after the show and meet her around soundcheck outside. Still wouldn't cop to being on the Coachella lineup.

The sound at this new venue in Phoenix was really good. The guitar overpowered things at first but that's what i'm looking for in St. Vincent anyway. I think this was my 4th time seeing her live and it was the best of them all. The combination of that noisy, distortion filled guitar and her beautiful vocals is just so good. "Northern Lights" and a cover by the Pop Group "she is beyond good and evil" were standout songs. She is touring with a background vocalist, keyboard player (he may have played another instrument or two, he also had two laptops going and a drummer. They all sounded excellent.

I took some pics of her gear for those into that sort of thing.

So incredible last night in Dallas. I am going with favorite show of the year. She also played an acoustic set earlier in the day at Good Records and I got her signature on Strange Mercy. She signed until the line was gone.

I am still in some sort of a coma after that show, but it was amazing. She is as lovely singing as she is capable of slaying on a guitar.

Anyways, Some videos and stuff.

"I knew the groove needed to be paramount," Clark said in a press release. "I wanted to make a party record you could play at a funeral."

Krokodil was pretty up-tempo, too. Nice to hear her continue down that road. Glad we only have a couple of months to wait to hear the rest of the album.
