Good work on the list.

The list is making me all warm and fuzzy inside :)

How does them playing with Bruce at Bonnaroo imply it could be the album they perform? Thats a retarded statement.

It was based off of Trey's speech about how Bruce Springsteen was his boyhood hero, and still is his hero today.

Also, I think people are going a little over board with some of these album predictions. I understand that these are some of the albums listed on the site, but do you all really think Phish would cover an MGMT album? Or a Manu Chao album?

I remember reading that the performance of Loaded got subpar reception initially because their audience simply wasn't as familiar with the album. That ended up with them performing Dark Side Of The Moon.

I'm calling The Rolling Stones. Either Exile On Main Street or Sticky Fingers.

Yeah, me too! Pretty much any of them would be great!

I must say though, I had a really strong feeling when The Doors scrolled by. L.A. band, for whatever that's worth, and it just seems fitting to me some how (Nirvana seems fitting to me too). I'd be down for either, but man there are some great possibilities on there. ...and sorry, but on Halloween night everybody would dance their asses off to Thriller.

To me the following are really FUN albums. There are better albums than these, but I would probably be laughing the whole time if they played one of these.

Yellow Brick Road, Ritual de lo Habitual, Moving Pictures, Master of Puppets, Never Mind, Evil Empire, Sailing The Seas of Cheese, Saturday Night Fever, Kid A, (Thriller).

Phish's style just seems so different than these albums, I think it would be great to see them pull it off.

Girlfriend and I are renting a car in LA to drive to the festival.

Any boardies looking to car pool on Thursday from LA to Indio?

We are looking for 2 people who can share gas money.

Sadly we can't give you a ride back after the festival. We are staying in Palm Springs to holiday for a few extra days.

PM me if interested.

ME!!!

As I've posted before. Coming all the way from the waters that spawned our fav . band. VERMONT............all by myself. Yup , pretty sad but I 'm not gonna miss this.

So if anyone wants to hook up, I think we should. I'm a funny muthafukka and I go to shows alone all the time and never have problems making friends to party with.

My main problem is that I'm gonna have to buy alot of my gear once I get to Calli. I'm not stuffing pillows and blankets in my luggage and taking them 3000 miles. I guess Ill have to rent a car and hit a walmart along the way. As well as the liquor store, and supermarket.

Will we be able to grill??? My fav. trick is buying different maets/steaks etc.....and I stalk someones grill and ask them if I can hop on it for a few mins. Several beers & shots later, we're eating like kings. I'm a Chef so people are always looking for cooking advice/tips.

This is gonna be EPIC!!!!!

You could always do the work exchange program.
https://workexchangeteam.com/phish.php

If I didn't have the funds I would do that, 6 hours a day or work pre or post fest. Even though we have the funds (and tickets already) we still talked about it, could save about $500 for two people. I could buy my Chella tickets with that. hmmmmm.

I have a really good (well actually bad) feeling that its gonna be Saturday Night Fever.....I mean its gonna be a saturday night, they could dress up in disco outfits and with the whole theme of which album will "stay alive".....just my thought, but I'm still hoping for Are You Experienced, which is what I was thinking before this massive list showed up

Sorry to ask, but how is it too late? I mean I wish it was too late, as in the festival starts tomorrow, but it's over 4 weeks away. Seems like the perfect amount of time to get the planning and arangements done. But, good luck on the contests!

Oh, too late as in I wont be able to afford this even if it is a month away. Like the couple hundred for the plane ticket, the money for the deposit, the party favors. Yadda yadda yadda, every year around this time theres always something big I cant go to and it feels like the end of the world but sure enough I get over it :)

Ahhh, I totally understand that. If 8 was in Florida I probably wouldn't make it out either. If I spent a bunch of time and money to get there, I wouldn't really want to do the work exchange either. ...and yeah, I have missed a TON of shows and festivals that I wish I could have gone to. I can't imagine how many shows and festivals I would actually go to if I won the lottery or something. Possibly... all of them.

Good luck on tiks!

There are also 8 albums that have videos if you click on them... Ziggy Stardust for one.

I would say the Halloween album is going to be...
1. Ziggy Stardust
2. Moving Pictures
3. The Doors
4. Thriller

,but I also think it's interesting it says "last album left alive". Like Alive... by Kiss.

Saw those this morning, thanks for letting everyone know.

Festival 8 had almost made me forget about the typical disapointment that comes to the West Coast when tour dates are announced. Like you can hear the whole West Coast go... tour... sweet... Ohhhhhhhh.... shafted again.

Except for the fact that this time, Cali can still hold it's head high and say you may win a couple of battles (o.k. most battles), but this year(for the first time ever) we win the war!

Your two-night run sucks donkey dick compared to our 8 set halloween festival... sorry. Cali's first Phish win EVER!

I'm sure the Miami NYE run will go down. It's been the rumor for months, like the fall tour dates, like the festival, like it's location...

While the fall tour is competition against 8, to me a 3 night NYE run is just too similar to a 3 night Halloween festival to announce prior to 8. You would have a lot of people on the fence say "I guess I'll go to the 3 nights at new year's vs. 3 nights on Halloween." The tour doesn't help, but it seems like it is not as direct of competition. The two are not at all the same, sorry again, but the festival will win out overall.

suprefan

They will wait until 8 ends, and also when the fall tour goes on sale and sells out for them to even announce NYE. Gotta make all your money before you add another event. Thats why they waited barely to announce the post halloween dates, they had to make sure people were pretty set on going to Indio before making sure everyone else would just go to the other shows.

MUCH ON THE HORIZON AT 8
Posted by Festival 8

Team Phish has spent much time in the Coachella Valley as of late, so much that folks in Indio have been referring to the Empire Polo Club as “Little Vermont.” They also call raisins “sun grapes,” which is just weird.

Seriously though, within the next week, the planning and mapmaking and drawing of the past several months gives way to building and transforming the site, at last, into Festival 8. Back on the East Coast, the band is deep in rehearsals; working on the Halloween Set, as well as the Acoustic set planned for Sunday morning at the festival.

While there are far too many great elements in the works for the festival to share in this space, we’ll highlight a few of them here:

THE OVERLOOK + THE COIL – Right at the entrance to the concert field is an elevated area partially covered by spectacular Olympic Peak Tents that looks out onto the lush concert field. Here at the Overlook you’ll get the chance to enjoy a particularly bloody mary at the Bloody Mary Bar, a movie area showing vintage Halloween classics, archival Phish video, (not to mention The World Series and NFL games), a massive 100 foot Ferris Wheel and an internet cafe (though wi-fi will be provided throughout the site). The Overlook will be opened from 8 am to 2 am each day of the festival, and will also be open Thursday, October 29, beginning after Soundcheck. Between The Overlook and the stage you’ll find The Coil, a large swirled structure where Festival 8 turns and returns, host to multiple art installations and interactive works galore. When the sun goes down, look on the outskirts of The Coil for an explosive group of fire artists bringing the HEAT (that has TWO meanings!).

THE HOUSE OF LIVE PHISH – It’s back for Festival 8 with a nice twist. Get out of the heat, the House Of Live Phish will be air conditioned! Think you can do a better job mixing Phish? The House will feature mix-your-own-track stations complete with skilled instructors from ProMedia, and you’ll be able to re-mix tracks from this Summer’s Tour while drinking a Shasta (Wait, scratch that last part — Shasta’s just pulled out). Final racks will be uploaded to a blog at livephish.com for everyone’s listening pleasure.

Also, everyone who visits the House of Live Phish will receive a free card redeemable for a Live Phish Summer 09 Sampler. Download and burn your own sampler onto CD using a Mac from our buddies at Small Dog Electronics in Vermont, or just enjoy listening to any of the songs at LivePhish.com on a Sonos listening station.

We’re also making each show from the weekend available on slotMusic micro SD cards, so that you can grab them on your way out of the concert field and listen back right away. Each card comes with a USB sleeve ensuring interoperability with all computers as well a microSD-enabled mobile phones and MP3 players. Listen to the concert on your way back to your campsite (you will never not be listening to Phish. Get used to it). Stop by the Phish Dry Goods tent for more details.

BEER! CERVEZA! BIER! BIERE! PIVO! BIR! – It seems a little silly to tout that there will be beer for sale at Festival 8. Worthy of mention is there will be over 50 different kinds of beer for sale – microbrews, ‘beers of the world’, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and our friends at Sierra Nevada have brewed a special pilsner exclusively available at Festival 8 called FOAM.

KURODA KNOWS HOW TO LIGHT A PALM OR TWO OR THREE – In addition to his usual duties behind the console, lighting designer Chris Kuroda is overseeing lighting throughout the site – at the entrances, in The Overlook, on the field. You’ll never see a more stunning collection of 140 lit palm trees. That’s the Kuroda Promise.

THE RETURN OF THE BUNNY 95.9 FM – Like a zombie in need of nourishing brains, The Bunny is back! Once again, we’ll be hopping around all weekend in a little trailer behind the stage, dishing out large quantities of killer music, up-to-the-minute traffic reports, festival updates, insightful interviews from the field, a dangerous triple session of Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro’s “From the Archives” shows, frightening late-night freak outs, subliminal messages, Dr. Demento outtakes, sound effects of doors closing, classic Jerky Boys tracks, white noise, Civil War dirges, Jewish fight songs, and of course, live broadcasts of all 8 Phish sets! If you get lost in The Coil or tied up at the Overlook Hotel, have no fear: The Bunny will be there for you, airing 24 hours a day beginning Thursday, October 29 at 10 AM right on through until Monday, November 2 at 10 AM. Now, if you happen to tune in before or after these times and hear a rock-block of Billy Joel, don’t be afraid: that’s just JACK-FM, the rock station we’ll be hijacking for the weekend. So be prepared: bring a boombox! Let The Bunny feed (on) your brain.

EIGHTH ANNUAL SCENT OF A MULE HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT – Got your costume picked out, tent packed, sunscreen, candy small beach towel and anti-grizzly spray ready to go? Well, how’s your pitching arm?

We’re tickled to announce the Eighth Annual “Scent Of A Mule Horseshoe Pitching Tournament” at Festival 8. Located in the concert field, the horseshoe pitching courts will be open for practice swings on Friday with the tournament taking place on Saturday and Sunday. East Coast vs. West Coast. It’s an easy sport to pick up so come and try your luck and get pointers from the good folks from the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association of America.

COFFEE & DONUTS ACOUSTIC. I ATE – A team of physicists have been working on fusing two different spheres of doughy goodness into one coherent form that retains its integrity after an aqueuous sugar coating has been applied. That’s right – those Sunday morning donuts will be commemoratively shaped in a figure eight, and glazed. We did it, America!

FESTIVAL CERTIFIED FARMER’S MARKET – On Friday, Saturday and Sunday we’ll dish out a Certified Farmer’s Market (meaning that all the farmers participating have certification that their produce is in fact grown in California) that will feature organic and transitional produce, honey, cheese, eggs, bread, pumpkins, wheatgrass, fresh cut flowers, nuts, and California-grown olive oil. You haven’t lived until you’ve tried certified, California-grown wheatgrass – let me tell you! Organic coffee, breakfast, and lunch will be available at the cafe located adjacent to the Farmer’s Market at the El Dorado Clubhouse.

Lot's of theories lately that there is a 100th album killing off the other albums on the wall or something like that. This one I find the most interesting.

What I could envision going down is them playing one song from each of the 8albums left (kill the pictures on stage) and then play this. It is really amazing and tripped out. Really fits their style too.

Just check the jamtopia site I mentioned earlier in this thread, they will update with more links I'm sure. A link to last night's show is already there. Read through the page and you will find it.

Here's the link to the site again: http://jamtopia.com/blog/phish-festival-8-cover-album-teaser/

I guess I should have been more specific about what I thought was fake:The campground locations look legit, maybee not the names? I think i'm looking into this too much becuase of the album eliminations....

This is the third leaked map that a phish message board has found this week. 3 major things stand out to me: 1 no MGMT campground (previous maps had it),2 a spelling error on the stone's camp ground (rocks off street) and 3, the name of the map file, battleplan. I could be wrong obviously, but with less than a week left, this dosen't even matter.

Indio police release traffic information for Phish Festival 8

Brian Indrelunas • The Desert Sun • October 23, 2009

Indio police announced closures, restrictions and alternate routes for roads near the Empire Polo Club, which will host Phish Festival 8 from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.

Police told drivers to expect delays in the area starting at noon on Thursday, Oct. 29, and continuing until the early morning hours of Monday, Nov. 2.

Indio police spokesman Benjamin Guitron said the traffic plan is similar to those used for other music festivals at the Empire Polo Club, 81-800 Avenue 51.

"It's patterned after previous festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach with slight modifications," Guitron said. "We continue to make adjustments as needed, as concerns arise."

Delays during Phish Festival 8 are expected on:
• Southbound Jefferson Street from Indio Boulevard to Avenue 52
• Southbound Monroe Street from Interstate 10 to Avenue 52
• Highway 111 at Jefferson and Monroe streets
• Eastbound Interstate 10 exits at Jefferson and Monroe streets

Also, the following roads will be closed from Friday morning to early Monday morning:
• Avenue 49 at Monroe Street
• Avenue 50 between Jackson Street and Madison Street
• Hjorth Street between avenues 49 and 50
• Madison Street between avenues 49 and 50

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, police said a number of roads will be converted to one-way streets at 11 p.m. to ease traffic congestion for vehicles leaving the polo grounds as the festival concludes at midnight:

• Monroe Street will carry northbound traffic only from Avenue 52 to Avenue 48
• Avenue 50 will carry westbound traffic only from Madison Street to Jefferson Street
• Avenue 52 will carry eastbound traffic only from Madison Street to Monroe Street

Police told people who live in the area or plan to pick someone up at the conclusion of a festival day to arrive at their destinations by 11 p.m. because it will be difficult to drive in the area after that time.

Also, police suggested that people who want to avoid festival traffic while driving north or south use Madison Street, Jackson Street, Calhoun Street or Golf Center Parkway.

Fred Waring Drive, Miles Avenue and Avenue 48 are preferred routes for eastbound or westbound traffic during the festival, police said.

Officials also encouraged people who live south of Avenue 52 to travel south to Airport Boulevard before traveling east or west.

Indio police also advised residents of areas that are inaccessible because of closures to call (760) 275-0919 if they have trouble getting to their homes during the festival.

:(

High of 90??? Still the coolest Coachella ever!

I definitely prefer the forecast from the day before (78-81), but I remember thinking in April when it was 95-100(?) that it really wasn't too bad.
...with an Easy Up, Kiddie Pool of Ice, Slip and Slide...

When it's 100-105, well I can start to feel my brain melt and not in the good "face melting" sort of way.

was out in coachella land last weekend and it was 95 degrees both days, but it honestly wasn't too bad...of course that was looking out from my nice air conditioned room at the marriott resort.

i think mid 80's are on call for next weekend, but it's supposed to be really, really windy starting wednesday...

i just found out that i will be cruising out for the show sunday, at least the early part...i want to see all the people walking around looking for their missing brain cells after 3 days of consumption.

Fresh fruit on tap for Phish festival

Xochitl Pena • The Desert Sun • October 26, 2009

Phish fans in the mood for fresh fruit and veggies won’t have to travel far during the three day festival starting Friday at Empire Polo Club in Indio

The Palm Springs Cultural Center’s Certified Farmers’ Market will provide locally-grown produce all three days on the festival grounds.

Paul Palodichuk, market manager said Phish invited the business to bring their produce to the festival and saw it as a “win-win opportunity for our farmers and for attendees.”

He said the farmers will be providing “additional produce” to make Phish’s Festival 8 a special venue.

The certified farmers market currently provides fresh-produce three days a week in three different locations across the valley in La Quinta, Palm Desert and Palm Springs.

No member of the band has the vocal range for Prince, Radiohead, or Michael Jackson. I don't understand why those are even seen as possibilities.

It won't be Zappa, Genesis, King Crimson or Yes. Neither is a well-known enough album, and last time they played a "lesser-known" album like Loaded they got shit from their fans and ended up doing DSOTM to quell the controversy.

Um, I was at the Loaded show (Halloween '98) and it was awesome. Not one single person within my 13 person group nor those who we spoke to there was upset by the show in the least. Phish still regularly plays songs from the album too.

Plus, they played DSOTM to like 13k people in UTAH of all places. I'm pretty sure it was for sh!ts and giggles too.

Yeah, I've been thinking Ziggy from day one, but for Phish it kind of seems a little obvious. Anyways, I'm deffinitely feeling the Bowie thing.

I tell ya, I threw on Thriller today and man it's awesome. I could totally see that going down and almost hope for that more than any other album. Can you say Halloween 80's DANCE PARTY! ::Cries a tear::

It wasn't on "The Map" so that doesn't surprise me too much. The thing with the map is there are only 7 camp grounds. If we go into this thing with 8 albums and only 7 campgrounds it would be kind of obvious I think. So, to me, we have to go into this thing with 7 albums(the campgrounds) and the album played has to be resurrected or it's not on the list.

I also think it interesting that David Bowie killed off Ziggy 30 years ago and that this board always cries to have him resurrected at Coachella.

I have no idea, but I can almost guarantee Phish will surprise us.

In addition to broadcasting the entire weekends music live, The Bunny will feature other programs to wet your appetite on the drive in and between sets. Live Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro will host Live from the Archives, a show in which he hand selects past performances from the bands massive music collection. HeadCount to stage "Reality Check" Game Show at Phish's Festival 8
Fans Compete for Grand Prize of One-of-a-Kind Jim Pollock Artwork in Trivia Contest

Rock The Earth To Recycle Cell Phones at Festival

If you fancy yourself an "a-Phish-ionado," or an expert on current events, you'll have a chance to prove it at Festival 8. HeadCount, fresh off announcing superb statistical results from last year's voter registration campaign, will host the "Reality Check" music and political trivia game show at this weekend's Phish festival. The Grand Prize winner will walk away with a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork by Phish poster artist Jim Pollock.

Be prepared to answer questions like this:

What part of Floyd's body got "sliced"?

What town does Trey Anastasio, John Popper of Blues Traveler and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors all hale from?

What Who album did Phish cover on Halloween 1995?

All you have to do is stop by the HeadCount booth and be ready to play "Reality Check." You'll also get a coupon for a free scoop of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food Ice Cream just for playing or for filling out HeadCount's "What's Your Issue?" survey.

"Reality Check" will pit you head-to-head with another competitor as a host quizzes you on Phish history, classic albums, the news and government. Plus, there will also be a Family Feud-style "Survey Says!" question. Win three straight times and you can advance to the Tournament of Champions, held before Phish's final set of the weekend on Sunday, November 1.

The Grand Prize winner will receive an uncut sheet of four Pollock Halloween masks. These masks will be available at the WaterWheel table throughout Festival 8, which will house a Pollock gallery. To make the "Reality Check" prize one-of-a-kind, Jim is doing a special illustration on one uncut sheet – meaning the winner goes home with a true Pollock original. Other prizes include a Festival 8 merchandise pack and an autographed copy of the PhanArt book.

So stop by the HeadCount booth and play "Reality Check," complete the survey and learn more about how HeadCount works with musicians to encourage participation in democracy.

Mobile Phone Recycling Drive

Rock the Earth and Phish are asking all fans planning to attend Phish Festival 8 to bring their old, unwanted mobile phones to the Rock the Earth booth for recycling.

All festival attendees who bring a phone to the Rock the Earth booth for recycling will receive a coupon for 20% off Musictoday purchase, PLUS get a free scoop of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. In addition, each phone is worth one entry into the daily drawing for Phish CDs, Green-themed DVDs, digital download cards, and one lucky Phish Festival 8 mobile phone recycler will win a Gibson Les Paul Studio guitar!

Did you know that there are more than 1 Billion mobile phones waiting to be recycled in the U.S.? Or, that one mobile phone contains enough toxic substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, etc) to contaminate 40,000 gallons of drinking water? Or, that an estimated 175 million new mobile phones will be issued this year in the U.S., yet less than 1% ever get recycled?

In partnership with Musictoday, Gibson, Rhino Records, and Nugs.Net, Rock the Earth's mobile phone recycling program aims to inspire fans to embrace recycling while increasing public awareness of the environmental consequences of discarded mobile phones. The more phones you bring to Phish Festival 8 for recycling the less toxic chemicals end up in landfills and the bigger your positive impact on the environment, while also increasing your chances of winning one of these fantastic prizes. What are you waiting for? Spread the word!

School of Phish: What you need to know about this weekend's festival

Bruce Fessier • The Desert Sun • October 29, 2009

Fans of Phish, the nation's premier rock jam band, are expecting nothing less than a historic event this weekend at Indio's Empire Polo Club.

But even the landlord isn't sure what to expect from the band's eighth solo festival, its first featuring eight sets over three days that includes a highly anticipated Halloween show Saturday night.

“They keep some things a secret for me, too,” said Alex Haagen III. “We worked with them and I think it's going to turn out very interesting. Very different, but exciting.”

Upwards of 40,000 people are expected for the concert, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30p.m. Friday. Gates open at 4 p.m. The city of Indio issued a permit for up to 60,000 people, but Phish management and festival promoter Paul Tollett of the Los Angeles-based Goldenvoice declined to offer attendance projections.

Haagen said Goldenvoice helped the Empire Polo Club win a nationwide competition to host Phish's first festival since 2004. The band has never put on a festival west of the Mississippi River and Haagen said, “I think it took them quite a while to get them to come out and even look at the property.

“They finally got them to physically see the property and that sold it,” he said. “They saw how beautiful it was.”

About 70 percent to 80 percent of the crowd is expected to camp on site. They can check in today and leave Monday morning. Some will park on 70 acres above Avenue 50 that Goldenvoice secured in a deal with the Desert Sands Unified School District, Haagen said, because some Eldorado Polo Club acreage used for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival wasn't available.

Haagen's crew graded and sodded that land and planted 750 Tipuana trees around the polo field for additional shade. Many of the trees and structures on the property will be incorporated into Phish's unique lighting design.

“One of the things they like is art and part of their art is lighting,” said Haagen. “With both the palm trees and the white tents, it gives great uplighting opportunities. We're excited to see it.”

Past Phish festival sites have been called a cross between a movie set and a carnival. Haagen said that's consistent with what he's heard the Phish crew is creating to keep fans engaged between sets.

A 100-foot Ferris wheel will serve as a sort of beacon at the festival entrance.

The campgrounds are named after albums Phish has indicated on its Web site it might cover for its Halloween set, including Jimi Hendrix' “Electric Ladyland,” Prince's “Purple Rain” and David Bowie's “Hunky Dory.”
From far and wide

Phish fans are traveling from all over the continent to be a part of Festival 8.

“I must say I think this will be the most amazing weekend of my life,” said Charlotte Green of San Diego. “I have 10 of my dearest and closest friends flying here from New Hampshire, Washington state, New Jersey and other states in New England. People will be going to great lengths to make it out here because Phish is putting their heart and soul into making this a memorable and magical weekend.”

“I think it is a great idea to have a Phish festival in SoCal,” added Michael Block of Atlanta. “I hear the weather and venue will be fantastic. I think this festival will be different (from past festivals) because the band is older and (presumably) sober.”

Haagen is convinced from the experience his son had watching Phish perform at The Gorge in Washington state this summer that the fans will be “mellow” and respectful of his property.

He's hoping it will lead to more fall festivals on his land.

“Obviously, Phish doesn't go back to the same place; you won't see a Phish Festival 9 here,” he said, “but there's no reason why we couldn't do a blues and jazz festival — something a little smaller and a little exciting. This opens the window to more economic impact events in the future. We think that's positive.”

Not a Phish fan? Become one

Maggie Downs • Desert Post Weekly • October 30, 2009

So you want to go to Festival 8 but don't know your “Hoist” from your “Farmhouse”? Never fear.

Here's an easy guide to becoming a Phish fan in just phive easy steps:

1. The look. Don't try to dress the part because you're just going to look fake and dumb. Trust me — everyone is gonna pick on the dude in the brand new 420 shirt and Rastafarian hat.

Besides, the idea that all Phish fans are pot-smoking, hacky sack-playing, dreadlocked hippies is an ugly rumor. They don't all have dreadlocks.

2. Phish is entirely separate from The Grateful Dead. While the two bands have some things in common, they are different entities. Do not confuse them.

3. The music. Of course listen to some Phish tunes. But don't drive yourself crazy with total immersion. That's way too daunting. With a band that's been playing together for more than 25 years, it would be downright impossible to listen to every song, download, bootleg and video out there.

Instead select your ideal level of Phish knowledge:

Guppy — Listen to Phish's most popular tunes, like “Heavy Things,” “Sample in a Jar,” “Bouncing Around the Room” and “Down With Disease.”

Trout — Take a listen to these tunes that are loved by diehards but also enjoyed by casual fans: “Farmhouse,” “Stash,” “Free” and “David Bowie.”

Marlin — You want to get down to business, which means it's time to download some live shows.

4. Want to start a conversation with the cute fan next to you? Just say, “Man, Trey sure can shred ...” Then sit back and let the magic happen.

5. Have phun. One of the best things about Phish is the band's ability to let loose and have a good time. They never take themselves too seriously, so why should you?

Shrug off your suit and leave the briefcase at home. Don't sweat it. Just soak up the music, enjoy the sunshine and have an excellent festival.

Talk the talk

Before heading out to Phish Festival 8, be sure to learn the following phrases:

Aisle monkeys: Fans who leave their seats to dance in the aisles.

Bathroom song: A song during which fans can run to the bathroom without missing anything. Bathroom songs differ from fan to fan.

Crispy: A really stoned fan or an excellent recording.

Custies: Customers, generally young fans who arrive with a fistful of money, ready to buy food, alcohol or souvenirs.

Dank: An adjective to describe something of high quality, particularly a potent herb.

Fatty: A nice joint.

Heady: Awesome.

Kick down: To give away to the less fortunate.

Meatstick Dance: A series of movements to accompany the song “Meatstick.” Not as popular as the “Macarana,” but decidedly more fun.

Shakedown Street: A centralized area, typically in a parking lot, where most vendors sell their wares. This is where you’ll find everything from T-shirts to burritos.

Wookie: (aka Wook) Fans who smell strongly of sweat and patchouli and constantly search for free drugs. They tend to travel in packs. A defining characteristic is their excessive unkempt hair, typically in the form of dreadlocks.
