holy fuck. i am considering selling my shoreline tickets right now for august in order to catch whatever debacle this is sure to be. FINALLY they are doing a west coast festi of their own...

sweet jesus

Agreed! Unfortunately, I think I will have to Axe HardFest & Street Scene for this... ouch! ...but like you said SWEET JESUS, Finally! It would soooo be worth it.

Good news is I could replace Hardfest with Plump DJ's for a lousy $10.

We've had it pretty easy on the east coast inso far as the Phishfest's are concerned. The upper tip of Maine (Limestone) is like 10 hours from VERMONT!!! I can't imagine making that trek from out west.

So it's only fair we gotta head west for once. I have 4 tix for SPAC that I'm gonna sell just to buy my plane tik. I'd much rather see the 3 at the Polo grds. than SPAC. Never seen a Halloween show. (Stones)

So the whole gimmick they payed their webmaster or web developer for of eliminating states to reveal where the fest will take place is all completely pointless?

Good luck with that.

Sam Boyd Stadium in Vegas holds about 60 to 70 thousand people. If they do it there then they need to do the Shuttle thing that Vegoose used to do. That way it's easier to get in and out of there.

I don't know much....but all the time I lived and worked in Las Vegas I remember vividly when Phish was there...they would absorb the whole town...it was just insane...Phish also has a huge following in Las Vegas of all places....and it makes sense since Phish haven't played Las Vegas on their current tour...and what better way to bring back Vegoose then with Phish? I don't really see how that's evidence, but whatever.

So, uh, yeah it's still for sure happening in Indio. My brother knows Bill from the String Cheese Incident (a jam band in the same circle as Phish), who in turn knows Trey and talked to him recently, and said that it's happening at the polo fields for sure. I just got off the phone with him.

The thing is, we might as well just give it a rest until mid-August. I seriously doubt they're gonna announce a So. Cal Halloween festival when their show at Shoreline in SF hasn't happened yet. That would take all of the excitement/hype out of that. And it's on 8/5. So expect a slow but steady state elimination on phish.com until then, but nothing more.

TallGuyCM
07-15-2009, 10:00 AM
I'm starting to think it's really not gonna be in Indio, unless they eliminate all the states and then CA descends back down to the map with the balloons. As of now, California is just as black and eliminated as the rest of the no-go states are.

Casino Logic

EXCEPT for the fact that in the latest animation Fishman's hand is making the shape of a F-ing "C" people! Enjoy... it may be the only time we get two bad ass music festivals at Coachella in 1 year.

http://jamtopia.com/images/uploads/phish-pinball-fishman-sm.gif

Also, with ALL of the non-stop chatter of Indio as a 100% lock, wouldn't you have ripped Cali out of there too? That way it's not so f-ing obvious. The map would be stupid and Phish lame, if they didn't do something to throw people off after what seems to be a terrible leak.

Based on weather conditions in late October, of all the states that have not been blacked out yet it has to be in either: Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, or Nevada.

My guess is that if it's not on the polo fields, it'll be in Florida (lame) or Nevada (I might consider it).

Only 10 states left, 11 if you count Hawaii.

The only reason I mention Hawaii is because they went to the trouble to bring down Alaska to blow it up.

From a July 3rd article.

There are a zillion places I think they could hold a festival in Northern California but practically nowhere in the last weekend of October.... Just basing this on weather. Probably somewhere along the coast would really be the only option. Ought to be a chilly weekend even then though.

Pearl Jam. Edit: Well, maybe not 162. They probably don't have that many songs.

Uh, because it means the band is going out of their way to give their fans a vastly unique show every time instead of playing the same 100 minute rehearsed setlist night in and night out.

Has Indio reeled in Phish?

No word from jam band but promoter confirms polo land is rented

Bruce Fessier • The Desert Sun • July 23, 2009

And then there was one.

After nearly a month of speculation, it appears the jam band Phish will perform a three-day festival over the Halloween weekend at Empire Polo Club in Indio.

The band announced last month they would hold the highly anticipated festival Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at an undisclosed location. A map of the United States on their Web site indicated possible sites, and as of Thursday, only California remained, leaving fans to conclude Indio had been chosen.

While the band has yet to make an official announcement, Goldenvoice — the Los Angeles-based promoter of the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals at Empire — said it is renting neighboring Eldorado Polo Club land to provide free parking for the single-band festival expected to draw similar crowds to the annual festivals.

That would mean up to 50,000 people per day could come to see a group that has never had a hit single.

A Goldenvoice official said it had been trying to book Phish to perform at Empire for “a couple months,” but only learned Wednesday it has apparently beaten out the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas for the rights.

Local hotels have been booked since late June in anticipation of the festival, the group's first since their Coventry, Vt., festival after an announced breakup in 2004.

Heather Guthrie, regional manager for the Indio Travelodge, hadn't heard of Phish before fans started calling. “I love them now,” she said, “because they sold out my hotel.”

Phish has been known as the world's biggest jam band since the 1995 breakup of the Grateful Dead because of their long improvisations. Their Millennium Celebration at the Big Cypress Indian Reservation in the Florida Everglades drew 85,000 people — more than concerts by Sting and Barbra Streisand — and featured a seven-and-a-half hour set from midnight to sunrise.

Formed out of the University of Vermont in 1983 by guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman, their first gig was a Halloween dance in the basement of the ROTC dormitory.

They developed a cult following before releasing a major label album and became one of the first bands to create a Usenet newsgroup in 1991.

Their first two-day festival, The Clifford Ball at a decommissioned Air Force base in Plattsburgh, N.Y., drew more than 70,000 people in 1996 and established a tradition of using installation art to create movie backlot-type scenes.

They began a tradition in 1994 of celebrating Halloween in a “musical costume” by playing another band's album in its entirety. They've performed The Beatles “White Album,” Pink Floyd's “The Dark Side of the Moon,” The Who's “Quadrophenia,” The Velvet Underground's “Loaded” and Talking Heads' “Remain In The Light.”

A Goldenvoice official who didn't want to be quoted said Phish will bring its huge props to this Halloween party, and there has been online speculation the band might perform Michael Jackson's “Thriller.”

What's so important you can't get there until 3?

Can I share my ticket with someone if I go one day and my friend goes the other?
No. Each ticket holder will be issued a non-transferable wristband, which must be worn at all times during the event. Was this plan your friend's idea? He sounds shady.

Can I bring in eye drops for my contact lenses?

The FAQs are hilarious. Read through them thoroughly. A couple of examples:

Can young people camp without companions? No. Young people must always camp with their companions. Companions, however, can camp alone.

There will be a vending machine selling Moloko Plus, Elsinore Beer, Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, Slurm, Booty Sweat, Slusho and Brawndo.

Will there be payphones inside the venue? Sorry, no. Last time we checked, it's 2009.

Will there be bathrooms/showers? Handicap accessible? Private?‚€® You seem really interested in the bathrooms. That's kind of weird.

YES!!!!! FINALLY we got some answers!!

And as I thought, the rules have ben slightly amended.

Phish is such a huge draw , they can pretty much do what they want. Although, I think that some "negotiating" obviously must've happened.

Beer, but just 1 case per person.

Camping allowed (next to your car) very cool . Although I'll be in a rental so who gives a fuk what happens to that cheap ass ride.

Only $15 for the camping pass. It was always included in the past, but this is alot better than the usual $55.

Anyone from the east coast here. I'll be coming out from Vt. and probly by myself. Looking for a travelling buddy? Where's a good place on these boards to find other single travelers?

Are you comparing the camping pass to Coachella camping? It's entirely different. From what I understand everyone in your vehicle does not need a camping pass. It's a vehicle pass.

Each VEHICLE entering the car camping area requires a car camping vehicle pass. You can camp next to the car you drive in.

That means if you have 4 people in your car, it's less than $5 to camp for the whole weekend.

I've never been, I'm thousands of miles away, no clue as to what it's like, the rules, etc......yeah sounds pretty cheap.

From what I understand (from clicking around this site/boards) previously you would park and camp in seperate lots. Seems like a pain in the ass to haul all your coolers, tents chairs etc to another location. Past Phishtivals allowed us to park and camp right next your vehicle. Which is nice because you can make sure (for the most part) nobody is fukkin' with your vehicle.

Can young people camp without companions? No. Young people must always camp with their companions. Companions, however, can camp alone.

Ok, I'm finding this particularly interesting:

"Travel Packages

Weíre working with a third party travel provider, Valley Music Travel, who have put together some convenient travel packages to make your trip out to to Indio even easier. Transportation from multiple airports, travel packages that include hotel accommodations, and transportation between local hotels and the site are all available through www.valleymusictravel.com. Many of these packages include an Event Ticket as part of the package, so if you are interested in a hotel package, you may wish to view their options before buying your ticket."

Perhaps this is the start of a park and ride option that they will implement at Coachella? Finally?

Well it doesn't seem like you even like the band that much. If you're just going out of sheer boredom or just to say you went or some shit then do us all a favor and don't take up the space.

Especially with how this weekend could easily end up being as expensive as Coachella, if I didn't really like the band playing I wouldn't even think of going.

I wish I could take credit. Most of it is loosely based on Coachella FAQs but the Phish peeps added all the fun & sass. I haven't quite been given the freedom to do that with ours..... yet.

Now for the new topic of conversation for this thread...

WTF are they going to fill the Polo Fields with?

We know there will be carnival rides, and crazy art...

Also, Just one Main Stage, but where will it be? Down by the Sahara? or perhaps by the Outdoor Theater (thats my bet).

emtgreg
07-24-2009, 09:28 PM
boourns is saying the same thing...

half the reason I am so damn in love with COACHELLAAAA

is because I had no real clue wtf I was getting myself into when I first went for Rage in 07...

and i had my fucking mind blown.

Before that my only other real concert experience before that was Radiohead shows...

I have no idea wtf is going to happen at a Phish festival, that is part of the allure...I am not going to go and shroom it up and rock out for 5 days...

emtgreg
07-24-2009, 09:32 PM
However, It is a great opportunity for me to actually do a few things that I have always wanted to:

Go to a huge festival and have no idea wtf is happening, clean eyes, clean ears so to speak...

Take a ton of pictures, write a lot of notes, and do an honest to goodness article on it, really break down what I saw, be as objective and as creative as I can be with it...

But also, I have said it before, i have a sincere amount of respect for any band that has so many loyal followers...

The fact that they are real musicians lends creedence to the taste of their followers, this aint hannah montana, trey aint miley cyrus (although...ahem, nevermind)

umm, anyways...my mind got distracted there...

^have you ever walked the empty grounds around sunset.

I took a bus back from EDC and it collapsed in Indio..stuck for three hours, so I took some Czech and Spanish travelers down to the grounds for some doobers and a walk. It was quite an experience.. a nostalgic whirlpool...kinda like if you went back to the house you were raised in 10 years later just without your family or posessions. It's a must do for everyone.

(and what the hell are you talking about hannah montana for?)

And you know, that sass and hilarity compelled me to read every single word of the Phish FAQ, and even read it aloud to others... and now I accidentally know all the answers to my dumb questions so that I don't have to ask you 400 times. Who knew?
