So, there needs to be a Broken Social Scene thread, and what better excuse than the show that went on last night?

Now that I've woken up a little...The new song in the link is good, but it's not much to go on as far as getting an idea of what their new stuff sounds like. This version of New Country is STUNNING though.

I have always wished I could have been there for that set.

Coachella really needs to book them next year. Six years is too long.

Sometimes I totally get Broken Social Scene's stuff, and think it's awesome; And then sometimes it just feels like a bunch of aimless arty wank.

I'd love to see them live, but I think I'd be disappointed if neither Haines or Feist were there.

Hey! It's like, my thread! Except I've never had the balls to make my own BSS thread!

Well, yes, this morning sure had a wonderful surprise for me. I can't wait to see what comes of these new songs. What I've heard so far sounds pretty great (and I hope they bring them to Tahoe this July!) And of course, I'd trust John McEntire with anything.

But I'm still sad my favorite producer of all time, Mr. David Newfeld, is on hiatus. The band will never be the same without them. I've always thought of him as the real most important member of this band.

I remember when I first heard that crazy noise/fuzz part in the second half of the song go into the handclaps, that crazy transition, that was one of the highlights of my young life so far, and I'm much better for it now.

I was extremely surprised BSS announced a show at the Fonda to be honest. BSS is way too big for the Fonda, this could just be a promo type of deal. I'm sure they will play some Greek Theater shows later in the summer or something. Or at least the Palladium.

Found this:

Touring lineup history
Broken Social Scene performing at the Intonation Music Festival, July 16, 2005.

From 2002 to 2004 female vocalists Emily Haines, Leslie Feist and Amy Millan rotated between availability from their own bands, until a full time replacement was found in 2005 with Lisa Lobsinger. From time to time (most notably at hometown shows in Toronto) any one of the women will usually resume their role on their trademark songs, and appear unannounced prior to the show.

* 2001: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Brodie West
* 2002: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, Jason Collett, Emily Haines, Leslie Feist, Evan Cranley
* 2003: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, Jason Collett, Leslie Feist, Evan Cranley
* 2004: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, Jason Collett, Amy Millan, James Shaw, Evan Cranley
* 2005: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, Lisa Lobsinger, John Crossingham, Julie Penner, Ohad Benchetrit, Leslie Feist
* 2006: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, Ohad Benchetrit, Julie Penner, Lisa Lobsinger, Amy Millan.
* 2007: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Kenny, Bill Priddle, Sam Goldberg (eventually Priddle was replaced by James Shaw, and then Mitch Bowden)
* 2008: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, Sam Goldberg, Leon Kingstone, Amy Millan, Liz Powell (fall tour only), Evan Cranley, Jason Collett.
* 2009: Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin, Sam Goldberg, Lisa Lobsinger, Leslie Feist, Evan Cranley, Jason Collett.

Also, that may have been the core band, but they brought more people along with them on the road.

The 2009 lineup listed is likely taken from their Harbourfront show in July, which was like this big BSS family reunion. Feist definitely didn't tour with them in 2009.

What is this I hear Broken Social Scene are now a 6 piece? When did they cut the line-up down so severely? This makes me incredibly sad.

Kevin said that there was a core six piece that was responsible for the songwriting on LP3, but that others still played on it. I'm not worried by this, the very nature of the band in the current day kind of necessitated something like this.

rage patton
02-18-2010, 09:58 AM
I can imagine BSS without the strings and choir... but I can't imagine them without the horns.

pancakespancakes
02-18-2010, 12:22 PM
BSS has pretty much always been Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Andrew Whiteman, Charlie Spearin, and Evan Cranley. Justin Peroff plays the drums (fantastically) and David Newfeld produces (brilliantly). Sam Goldberg is a new member who is now added to this core group. And from there, everyone else is a super sweet guest in their super sweet band, even if they like to tell you their band is made up of 19+ members.

Live is always Kevin, Brendan, and Justin, almost always Charlie and Andrew, and in the last tour, Sam. Everything from there is just, again, special guests, whoever is available.

rage patton
02-18-2010, 12:29 PM
I understand that BSS has a core and that the special guests are not part of the regular touring or recording group. What I have an issue with here is that they are cutting the special guests out of their live show and touring with just the core group. I dont mind if the new album only has 6 people playing on it. I just want my 15+ people on stage to play the music.

Neutral Milk Hotel
02-18-2010, 12:34 PM
I don't think anything has been said to indicate that there won't be a whole shitload of people on stage. I don't see why they would do that part any differently.

rage patton
02-18-2010, 12:36 PM
I read a couple people say that when they saw BSS last year, there were only 6 or 7 people on stage. Also, based on the description of the band on the Sasquatch page, it makes it sound like they will only be touring with the core 6 members.

pancakespancakes
02-18-2010, 04:59 PM
Thing is, they never tour without "special guests" of some sort. The only time they've ever toured without a female vocalist was for the Kevin Drew "Spirit If" tour, which wasn't even a real BSS tour. And I don't think anything's changing in that regard? They would never go on stage without having at least one person to play horns (like Charlie).

I've only been able to see them twice, both in summer 2008, and that was made up of the core six dudes, plus Amy Millan and Torq from Stars, and some Toronto buddy I didn't know playing trombone, trumpet, saxophone, etc., which made for a lot of horn players on stage. And if they're not touring with Amy, then Lisa Lobsinger will be there no doubt.

Their LA date on that tour was completely a Broken Social Scene show, though. It was pretty much a BSS show with some Kevin Drew songs thrown in, which sound the exact fucking same as Broken Social Scene songs. Emily Haines even flew in for this show. Everything about it screamed BSS.

I was there too. Great show. Also bummed no Feist or Emily Haines. I was in the back during the encore(s) and it was funny watching people leave after Kevin Drew said goodnight and goodbye to everyone and then he slowly starts playing another song and they all come back in. That happened a couple times. And yeah, the show ended up being about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Does anyone have the set list?

I also liked the poster they were selling better than the free Fillmore one. The Fillmore one looked kind of plain. I didn't buy one though, I wonder if they sold out of them, there were only 100 of them made. I might have to pick one up if they didn't sell out and they put them up in their store.

I picked up number 38 of 100 right about 10 before the went on. I was also in the back during the 3 encores and was one of the people leaving and coming back in, had somewhere to be but didn't want to miss anything.

OK let's see what I remember they played.

Capture the Flag
KC Accidental
Stars ad Sons
Cause = Time
Anthems
Shoreline
Major Label Debut (fast)
Fire Eye'd Boy
World Sick
Texaco Bitches (dedicated to the oil spill fiasco)
Forced to Love
All to All
Art House Director
Ungrateful Little Father
Meet Me in the Basement
Water in Hell
F--cked Up Kid
and a "B-Side that never got made." Can't remember the name.

They played for about 2 hours and 8 minutes. I really wish they played Chase Scene off the new one. And bummed we didn't get Lovers Spit and either of the Suicides. Overall though, an incredibly tight set by the band. There was a horn section comprised of four guys from Los Angeles...probably USC students. I wonder how they hooked that up. The crowd loved the show, and someone even snuck confetti shooters into the venue and surprised the band with them towards the end. I place that firmly at number 3 out of the times I've seen them (behind last time at Fonda and Orpheum). God they are such a sick band. I'm so glad I've gotten to see them this many times.

Are they touring with a horn section? Also, does they have a string section? Or, at least a violin?

tessalasset
05-04-2010, 11:57 AM
YEP! Read my review (I whited out the set list). There's a four-person horn section that I think they hire from each city. Cause they said the horn section were local guys. Maybe I just misunderstood and he was saying they hired their horn section from Los Angeles for the tour. But they all looked like young college guys who were SUPER STOKED to be on stage with the band, so I dunno. And yeah, there was a big tall bear of a man who played violin. Which makes me even more incredulous that they didn't play Chase Scene.

They do that every time they play it and I can still never remember when it starts, so I can't be one of those cool fans who does it without having to be asked. That's how everyone used to do it. But today he warned everyone a line in advance to clap coming up.

Superconnected
Texico Bitches
Forced to Love
Art House Director (which grows on me the more I hear it)
Meet Me in the Basement <3
Water in Hell
Ibi Dreams of Pavement
Shoreline
Stars and Sons
Cause = Time

I think that's it. They ended with Ibi in a sort of encore, cause they finished and everyone kept cheering and they asked if we wanted one more song. Of course we all did, and the Amoeba rep kept shaking her head no, and they played it anyways and just begged us to buy some music to make up for going over.

It was a great show, and it's always great to see them play with Feist and Emily, but Feist's vocals were super low in the mix. I could barely hear her from about 100 ft away from the stage.

Fuuuuuuuuck. What I wouldn't give to hear the Feist version of Lover's Spit.

Seriously. It totally slays the other version, which is still great. Wait, Emily was there but no Anthems? Weird. Okay, we need Feist and BSS at Coachella next year. Is there any word on a new album? It's been over 3 years since the last one.

Huh, that is weird. Didn't notice that. Anthems with Emily is just about the best live thing they do.

I could have swore they played more songs... but that may be because "It's All Gonna Break" lasted 10+ mins. Either way, they played for 2.5 hours without an encore. They packed in all the songs they could and the show was incredible.

Almost Crimes would be awesome on Tuesday. And hopefully they make up for the glaring omission of Lover's Spit at the Fonda show a few months ago.

Have there been any guest appearances other then that Pavement show? Metric are on a touring break before they go off with Muse again... One can hope.

I havent seen Almost Crimes on any of the other setlists from this tour... I was completely surprised to hear it. One of my favorites from the set too. Also, I am pretty sure they have played Lover's Spit at every show this tour... so your chances are pretty good. Whatever they play though, I am totally confident you will love it. It was my third time seeing them the other night and it blew away the other 2 times I saw them.

The guitarist from Metric played guitar and trumpet at the show I saw the other night. No Emily Haines though.

Well magical thing's happen in LA occasionally. I think Emily joined them in NYC if I remember correctly.

Also, I remember them being "done" after the self titled album, so is this the last tour for them as a band or what's the deal?

There was a brief hiatus-ish period after S/T, but even then Kevin and Brendan released solo albums (which were originally gonna be the next BSS album, a Love Below/Speakerboxx style double album, but I digress), and the band continued to tour. The era of the multi-headed Feistian Metricy beast form of Broken Social Scene is pretty much over, but the heart of the band was always Brendan and Kevin, an as long as they're still at it Broken Social Scene will live on.

FUCK yeah. I can. not. wait. for this. I will see all you bitches there.

And BSS is never going to stop. They're like the Grateful Dead. Even the Spirit If tour was still just a normal BSS tour. Long live my gods of rock.

Sea and Cake+BSS sounds like a big fucking win to me.

Jacking the Ball would send me years back if i heard that live.I doubt you guys will get Color and Vision though.

With BSS i kinda feel like I'm not worthy since i just got in to them this year and have not heavy sunk into a listening frenzy.

Daaaaamn gina. I think I've seen them almost every single time they've come to LA in the past six years. They are in my top like three live acts of all time. Your ass better be there.

Line was just around the corner when the doors opened. I think they had some tickets at the window, but nothing came up on ticketmaster yesterday.

Also, posters signed by the band!! Get here.

Jealous. Going to their SD show tomorrow, but I don't know how much energy they'll have considering their doing the afterpary.

So very good. Enjoyed the show immensly, as did my dad who was astounded by how many people were on stage and the sound they were making. Also loved my signed poster wooh

Only fault I saw was the crowd seemed to only be there for a few songs. More then most shows. To the point where I heard someone shout out "Scott Pilgrim rules" in the middle of Anthems. I mean really?

But again amazing show. O and Owen Pallet was there!! Pictures and more later

Yeah, that show was really fantastic except for the reworked Lover's Spit, which I don't think worked at all.

And goddamnit I love Owen Pallett

TallGuyCM

Yeah, I thought the version of Lover's Spit we got was pretty lackluster.

But overall the show was great. The first part of the show the band was just firing on all cylinders. They did lose me for a bit after Cause=Time, but from Almost Crimes on they killed it.

One of the loudest shows I've been to at the Wiltern too, which I wouldn't have guessed.
