Fucking amazing... This is fantastic news. New album = tour. They played in SF three times when the last album came out and I missed every single one. Redemption! And speaking of redemption... Coachella? Either way, I am super excited over here.

Air Announce New Album: Love 2

Just when we were beginning to forget that French musicians don't traffic exclusively in EQed-to-death monster-house jams, Phoenix came along with the weightless Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and reminded us that, oh yeah, the French can also be pretty great at luminously suave pop music. Now that our appetite for smoove, starry-eyed Gallic studio-rat music has been restored, it's the perfect time for Air to drop a new album. And that's exactly what they're doing.
On October 6, Astralwerks will release Love 2, the fifth studio album from the Paris duo. This will be the first album that Air recorded at their own Atlas Studio, which I have to imagine is the most luxurious recording studio on the planet. Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin handle all the album's vocals by themselves, and L.A. gun-for-hire drummer Joey Waronker sits in on the entire record.

And yes, to answer your question, the album does include a song called "African Velvet". There's also one called "So Light Is Her Footfall". This might be a pretty good time to invest in a new lava lamp.

"Do the Joy" will be available as a "viral single" on July 7, according to a press release. On August 25, they'll drop the album's first proper single, "Sing Sang Sung".

Love 2:

01 Do the Joy
02 Love
03 So Light Is Her Footfall
04 Be a Bee
05 Missing the Light of the Day
06 Tropical Disease
07 Heaven's Light
08 Night Hunter
09 Sing Sang Sung
10 Eat My Beat
11 You Can Tell It to Everybody
12 African Velvet

Me too, me too!!

These guys record PERFECT albums. No sound is out of place. I randomly listened to 10,000hz Legend the other day, and damn if it isn't just as good as the day I first heard it.

I remember being apprehesive about the last album release. There was a lot of talk about them incorporating traditional Asian instruments. I was worried it would sound terrible. Boy was I wrong. The traditional instruments blended seamlessly with the rest of Air's sound.

Bring it on boys. Here's hoping for an early leak!!!

A more extensive article on the album:

French electronic-pop act Air will return October 6 with the release of their fifth studio album entitled "Love 2." The twelve song set is the first album to utilize the duo's new Paris-based recording facility, Atlas Studio. In the past, Air has worked with producers such as Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Paul McCartney) and Tony Hoffer (Beck, Supergrass), but "Love 2" marks the first time the group wrote, recorded and produced everything on the album.

In gearing up for "Love 2", two singles will precede the release. On July 7, opening track "Do The Joy" will be hit digital retailers, followed by "Sing Sang Sung" on August 25.

Air's 1998 debut, "Moon Safari," set the stage for the budding "downtempo" electronic music style, and has sold 364,000 according to Nielson SoundScan. Air's first four albums have a combined for a total of 733,000 sales. They also wrote the score for the 2000 film "The Virgin Suicides," which has sold 158,000. Over the years, they've ventured away from the lush orchestration of "Moon Safari" and explored melding those sounds with dark, synth pop.

But on "Love 2," fans can look forward to a wide mix of sounds and arrangements that have sprung up in Air's work over the years. They explore more jazzy grooves during "Love" and "Tropical Disease," while creating a warmth and sensuality during the instrumentals "Be A Bee" and "Eat My Beat." But the colder electronic approaches that the group first displayed on "10,000HZ Legend" surface with the robotic vocals of "Missing The Light Of The Day" and on the swirling psychedelia of "Night Hunter."

And it wouldn't be an Air album with out some straight-forward takes on French pop: "Heaven's Light," "Sing Sang Sung" and "You Can Tell It To Everybody" continue the duo's work in this tradition.

Air is planning on touring Europe and North America, beginning in early 2010. They will kick things off with a hometown show at the Casino de Paris.

Here is the track list for "Love 2":

"Do The Joy"
"Love"
"So Light Is Her Footfall"
"Be A Bee"
"Missing The Light Of The Day"
"Tropical Disease"
" Heaven's Light"
"Night Hunter"
"Sing Sang Sung"
"Eat My Beat"
"You Can Tell It To Everybody"
"African Velvet"

A great run down of what to expect, and hints at a 2010 NA tour.

Hmmm. So, I take it this is going to be a new album more in the vein of Royksopp wherein Air trade in the soothing downtempo sound for something more upbeat (probably not as blog house-y as Junior was, though)? *sigh* Oh well.

The band, who are gearing up to release a new album around the time of the tour, will call at venues in cities including London, Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle.

I have now listened to Love 2 a few times. It is my least favorite Air album and I don't think that opinion will change soon. There are great moments and songs, but overall it doesn't hold up as a cohesive album. Some tracks seem like outtakes from Premiere Symptoms or Moon Safari. I've read this is the first album they recorded as a "live" studio band, and it shows. The drums especially sound looser and lighter. Pocket Symphony and Charlotte Gainsbourg's 5:55 were perfect in my mind, so this album comes as a slight misstep to me. Nonetheless, an enjoyable misstep.

Wait, what?

Talkie Walkie is my favorite album of theirs by far. Ironically enough, it's the one album of the three I own (I've also got Moon Safari and Pocket Symphony) that I didn't buy. I've gone back to Moon a number of times over the past 5 years and still haven't been able to connect with it the way so many people must have in order for them to garner such acclaim. "Photograph" is the only song off Pocket that I can recall and I do so because I love it; I could probably stand to listen to that album again.

I liked Pocket Symphony for what it was but I definitely prefer this type of stuff more. I haven't heard 10000 Hz but I would guess this is their most upbeat album. This is up there with Talkie Walkie for my favorite and may fall somewhere in that Top 50 albums of the Decade list if I can ever edit it again.

I hope Air doesn't play Coachella next year. They keep playing Coach, then play a full set in Arizona on the SAME WEEKEND as Coachella, so I will never get a full Air set in AZ unless I skip Coach that year. :nono

This was the first Air song I ever heard and it's still my favorite too.

"Sexy Boy" was the first Air song I heard (in researching them for Coachella '04) and prompted me to purchase Moon Safari. The rest of the album was a bit of a disappointment, honestly, although it grew on me over the years. Talkie Walkie really moved me, and the Virgin Suicides soundtrack is also pretty terrific. I would rank those 1 and 2, with Moon coming in at #3 and Pocket Symphony #4. I don't like them enough to have sought out 10,000 Hz and I don't recall hearing about Premiere Symptomes until this week.

That being said, does anyone have their new album available to upload?

subheadliner? what?

Boourns
10-03-2009, 12:05 PM
Air was a subheadliner. They were on the second line of the poster. Therefore their set is not the one that should have been trimmed since their higher billing means more people would want to see them than whatever other acts were on that stage. Not rocket science, mang.

I don't think it's that bad, there are some great songs. The problem is though that a lot of the songs DO feel like old outtakes that they just kind of threw on. I like it better than Pocket Symphony which I thought was really boring but yeah, overall it doesn't really hold up as an album. I really like the first four songs, but after that there are only a few.

I've listened to it twice, and there are a few standout tracks for me so far, but the rest don't thrill me (Be a Bee, African Velvet are the ones I liked...). I will give it some more listens and hopefully I will like it better. Jacob likes it a lot.

I just got this in the mail. It isn't grabbing at me as much as Talkie Walkie did, but it isn't going by as unnoticed as Pocket Symphony did (and I thought Pocket Symphony was okay).

To me, this sounds like something that needs a few close listens until I realize that it's awesome. It is a tiny bit of a let down considering that I didn't need to hear much of everything else Air has done (Pocket Symphony aside) to realize it's awesominity.

EDIT: I should note that I'm only up to "Tropic Disease" right now, so this is very early of me... and I also want to say that "Tropic Disease" is fucking great.

I'll continue talking about the LA Phil because I think it's relevant. I want to know exactly what I'm paying for before purchasing tickets. It's true that there's no evidence to suggest they are collaborating but why else would they be playing the DH?

does every band that plays the DH play with the LA phil? m83 did. dirty projectors are set to do that in feb. I've never heard of anyone else doing that. grizzly bear don't count because they didn't actually play with the orchestra at all, the orchestra opened for them.

They are already selling tickets and they haven't indicated they are playing with the LA Phil. It's not happening.

Relax kids, I spoke with an LA Phil rep who said the actual press release from the LA Phil regarding the show will be out on the 10th (Thursday) and it will specify whether or not it is a collaboration, at this point it is just listed as "AIR" to members. As of right now they have been selling tickets to LA Phil members ONLY for the past week or so when their new calendars were sent and that allotment is pretty much gone.

I could give two shits if it's with the LA Phil or not. Air playing at one of the most gorgeous venues on the planet is enough for me.

It was super awesome when the LA Phil played a full set with Air at the Hollywood Bowl in 2004, there is no reason to think that LA Phil will "eff up" Air's set in 2010.

Dang, was really hoping we'd get a Coachella do-over this year, seems unlikely now...

Weird how there is little info yet regarding the Wiltern show...considering it'd be in 10 days.... would definitely rather finally go check out the Disney Hall though.

And something tells me the presale won't be at 10am EST for us on the west coast on Thursday, unless they're gonna go all U2 on us and be lame.

Well hopefully it's with the Phil.

See, I disagree with this. They "effed up" the M83 show last March in my honest opinion. This is a show that I spent good money on and looked forward to. So my concerns are not baseless.

In other news, I went to the Scenestar (http://thescenestar.typepad.com/ss/2009/12/air-to-play-walt-disney-concert-hall.html) website to try to find presale info about the DH show and they are saying this show is with the LA Phil and they have a pretty good reputation for posting info about local shows. I just want to see an Air show not a collaboration or whatever they organize so most likely I'll just go to Oakland anyway. So yeah. Carry on.

That set was actually w/ the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra (the LA Phils stepchild) not the LA Phil.

This info is based on conversations with people at the Disney Hall office. I'm trying to get more info from someone I know there before Thursday when we post pre-sale info. I'm guessing it might be the same set up as M83 with Air, orchestra, combo. Hopefully I'll have all that set in stone before Thursday's posting. The M83 show was cool but I know people expected a more dancey "Saturdays = Youth" set from them so to each their own. =)

It would be a pretty big blunder for it not to be real after being advertised by Filter Magazine with a poster and all.

Yo TallGuyCM!

Can you forward that Wiltern Air email to me at oscar@thescenestar.com? Thanks!!!

I'm assuming this will sell out rather fast.

I thought The Walt Disney held a lot more people.
