View Full Version : Coffee, 226 cloudy days, Space Needle...?

So I got laid off last week. I might have just landed a gig as a temporary assistant to an author friend of mine. If I get the job, it will mean accompanying him to Seattle June 29-July 3. I've worked for this guy in the past, and if his habits are like they were before, my afternoons and evenings would pretty much be mine to waste. So, any recommendations on what to check out/do/explore in Seattle besides the Space Needle?

So I just typed a solid 500 word response only to hit send and have the board server inform me that I had been timed out. FML.

I'll tackle this tomorrow. The one thing you need to know is Capitol Hill. Gays, hipsters, counter culture, personality, nightlife, it's where it's at in this town.

Thank you, Boarder! I'll definitely check out Capitol Hill.

I'm usually very good about using the search function. Obviously this was a massive fail on my part. Thanks for being nice about it, Tess.

copy/pasted from another board (hmm wonder which one...):

Capitol Hill
A really nice neighborhood with a lot of great coffee places, some cool record stores and just a really nice vibe. Sonic Boom Records is on 15th Ave and not to be missed if you're into music.

Kurt's house
If you haven't seen it yet I'd go there. It's on Lake Washington Blvd E, next to Viretta Park ("Kurt's Park"). It's privately owned, but it's interesting for a (once) Nirvana fan to go there.

Seattle Public Library
Awesome architecture and definitely worth a visit. Don't forget to visit the one floor which is completely red. It's a trip.

Gasworks Park
Great place to chill out after a busy day. Awesome views, and the best place in Seattle to fly a kite! (apparently)

Fremont
Another neighborhood, apparently this is where the whole early "grunge" scene was concentrated. There's lot of cool structures scattered around the area, giving it a nice artsy vibe. Don't miss the Fremont Troll, which is an 18 foot troll sculpture under the north end of the Aurora Bridge.

Space Needle
A bit pricey I think, but I loved having a beer while enjoying Seattle from the top.

Pike Place Market
Sure, everyone goes there, but unlike most "number 1 tourist spots" this one is actually cool. Buy a bag of Rainier cherries there. I'd never heard of them, but they're now my favorite fruit. To bad they don't sell them here.

Bainbridge Island
Take the ferry for a day trip to this beautiful island. It's only 45 minutes or so.

Downtown
Nice to see, but nothing special.

Volunteer Park
Located in Capitol Holl it has an old water tower in it which you can climb for a great view of the city.

North Bend/Snoqualmie
If you're a Twin Peaks fan, you might wanna go to the North Bend and Snoqualmie Falls area. They shot a large portion of the series there. It's a 40 minute drive to get there. I loved it. Plus the scenery is cool too.

Other places worth visiting (some require a car): University district, the Washington Park Arboretum and its Japanese garden, Mt. Rainier, Olympia, Whidbey Island, Olympic National Park.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, there's lot of stuff to do in the city and the surrounding area.

Sucks about getting laid off, Jewface. On the other hand, does mean you get to enjoy the phrase "got laid off" in conversation.

I used to love goin gto gasworks park when I lived in seattle. I might be mistaken but isn't "ballard" on some kind of channel...I remember some good seafood restraunts down there.

Has Capitol Hill undergone a giant makeover cause I pretty much only remember broadway a span of 5-10 blocks being of interest???

What's going on with pioneer square??? Pioneer square saloon for giant pichers of hefe...yummy

nightlife.

capitol hill is great on 15th... the corridor is a little too al;sdufha;sduf for me on the weekend unless i'm planning on getting trashed or dancing.

i really enjoy ballard, especially People's Pub on wednesdays.

pioneer square is a fucking shithole that can fall into the depths of hell for all i care.

record stores:
Wall of Sound (Capitol Hill)
Sonic Boom (Capitol Hill, the Ballard one blows in comparison)
Everyday Music (Capitol Hill)
Easy Street Records (lower queen anne)
Dissonant Plane (Ballard)

Pretentious coffee drinkers, and for good reason. Eff Starbucks, Tully's and all those other fast food coffee chains.

Remember, Starbucks is to coffee what McDonald's is to hamburgers.

Have you ever tried Zoka, they have one at UW, and greenlake, they were my old coffee roasters, till we found these local cats out of San Jose that are really making a name for themselves...

Aw. Thanks for all the tips, guyz. I fully expected to get verbally berated for failing to use the search function.

Gasworks Park looks lovely! Living in So Cal for so long you forget that greenery can occur naturally outside of a well manicured front garden.

If you are a movie geek, go to Scarecrow Video. It's kind of hard to find if you don't know the city, though. They have the most insane collection of rentals I've ever seen...not much use if you're just visiting, but still interesting. They actually arrange movies by Director.

I'm not a big fan of their roast... but they make a mean fucking milkshake.
