So we now have a title for the new album. All we need now is a confirmed date. This thread's open for any discussion/news about the album or band. I'm really looking forward to this though. For those of you who care, discuss.

Any word on if the album is still gonna be along the lines of a rock opera or whatever the fuck they were saying last year?

A Red Rocks date would be wonderful.

They are opening for U2 on the east coast dude, I think they will do a few solo shows and thats it, I think a big tour comes next year and or Coachella.

I know they're opening for U2. That doesn't mean they can't break off and play some shows (which you suggested). I don't think anything is a given, but Muse headlining a night at Coachella will happen I'm sure. Massive Attack into Muse. Perfect.

They're going to begin touring this Autumn. I remember them saying the album will come September this year but I'm waiting for an official date. Bellamy also said that a large percentage of it is orchestral. I wonder if they'll do a tour / one-off show with an orchestra. I generally don't like much when bands do that but I think Muse could pull it off.

"Supermassive Black Hole" always make me cringe when I hear it. Always. I actually haven't listened to the whole album since it came out, but I distinctly remember being disapointed with it. Furthermore, at Vegoose, I didn't think the Black Holes and Revelations material worked as well live as OoS and Absolution material. This is, aside from "Map of The Problematique" which is an awesome track.

Maybe I will have to listen to it again, I haven't listened to it in a few years.

TommyboyUNM
05-22-2009, 11:45 AM
"Map of the Problematique" is the best track on the album. I agree with you there. I also agree that Oos and Absolution material is better live. Though I'd like to submit "Assassin" and "Knights of Cydonia" as songs from the album that work really well live. They didn't do "Assassin" very much on their last tour, but I saw them do it in Phoenix in July of 2006 and it was maybe the best song of the night.

My heart rate raised a little when I saw the title of this thread.

"Supermassive Black Hole" always make me cringe when I hear it.

I can understand that. I actually like it now, but it so doesn't belong on that album. Would have been an awesome one-off soundtrack single or something.

But it's an amazing album, and if you remove that song, much more consistent than any of the others.

i saw them in milan twice and it just seemed like they were going to die on stage. it was hard to enjoi because we all were worried. this was in '03-'04... maybe their heady days? i dont know but the lead was slumped over a keyboard for about 20 minutes with his guitar making all kinds of wild feedback. and im pretty sure it was more of a pass out than an artistic endeavor.

where'd you see them tommy? what was it like?

That song was fucking amazing at the Forum in 2007. Unfortunately, it's such a rarity live I'm really happy we got it.

Wow, that doesn't sound like them at all. Keep in mind that you saw them over 5 years ago.

First time I saw them was in October of 2004 here in Albuquerque. This was after they headlined Glastonbury. They played a small club here. Probably a little smaller than The Rialto in Tucson. No fancy lights or anything. They blew me away. They had ridiculous energy and made a ton of noise for being a 3-piece band.

Second was at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix in July of 2006. Right after BH&R came out. It was much more of a show. Highly highly enjoyable.

Third time was at Red Rocks in September of 2007. Best show of my life at that point. Their lights and energy make for a truly great time.

Fourth time was at Street Scene a few days after Red Rocks. They were really the only good reason to go that year. Again, they were on point that night.

Last time was at Vegoose a month after street scene. It was a stripped-down show, but they sounded awesome. They converted a lot of people who were just waiting for Rage Against The Machine.

This band has one of the best headliner-quality shows in the world. Not sure if there's much room to debate about that.

Yup. Its the only time I saw them, but I still loved it. I was also aware it was a very stripped down show. I don't blame them though, it was a one off. Vegoose was lucky enough to get them at all.

That's awesome! I really loved their stage set-up for that leg of the tour and those are some awesome pictures. That was a really great show. I think the Forum was a stronger performance/better set list though (Citizen erased and two encores). Maybe it had something to do with the fact that it was my first Muse show and I was much closer but that show was just a mindblowing experience for me.

The important thing here is a headlining quality act is releasing a new album in late summer/autumn, hasn't headlined Coachella yet and hasn't played said festival in two albums now... HINT, HINT! GV let's do this, you know it would be one hell of a show.

But its them in a small theatre, it doesnt matter, cause at that time they were paying Absolution and like half of Origin Of Symmetry at shows which is heavy as s**t. Wiltern show in 2004 was insane, so was SOMA in 2006.

Definately agree about that Soma show. It was my first Muse show and without a doubt my best Muse show. I was front row on Chris's side and they blew my fucking mind, went so far beyond my expectations. That show was one of the main reasons why they're one of my favorite bands.

Have fun with all the girls who had no idea it would get that rough and got pulled out? What a mess Ill say that the whole time, I was like 6 or 7 back at the begining of the show, and ended up one person behind right before main set ended.

Yeah, similar situation here. Was about 1/2 way back at the beginning of the show, and was in the same place throughout when they opened with Map of the Problematique. But as soon as Chris busted into the bass intro to Hysteria, everyone went nuts and soon I was about 8 people from the stage. :)

I think they are too big to open for anyone especially in California area. Their own Forum & Bill Graham Auditorium shows were sold out. Maybe that's why. They will come to CA for their own show. But then their own MSG show was sold out (or pretty close) too in NYC and yet they still want to get some slice of U2 fan base in that area (by opening in the U2 Giant stadium gigs).

They're decent in concert.

The only reason why I gave it any validity is because it has The Pit here in Albuquerque. People don't usually just throw out Albuquerque if it's just a giant guess. And The Pit adds more credibility because they are re-doing the arena right now. They want to hold more concerts there and make it an all-purpose arena. Since the late 60's, it's been home to UNM's basketball teams. It's hosted to occasional concert and some rodeo events.

I know you've told me you think they are rip-offs of Radiohead or something. Honestly, I made the immediate Radiohead comparison when I first heard Muse. But the more I heard Muse's music, the more I realized it is kind of a silly comparison. Matt and Thom hit roughly the same pitches (though Thom is a better singer). Muse is more of a straight forward rock band with a touch of orchestral effect. Marco compares them more to Queen and I completely agree with that.

Matt and Thom have very similar voices, but Matt sings more theatrically (like Queen). Here we go again.

And what's the deal, Salah? You want people to seduce you over to the bands you profess to hate?

edit: also I think Matt's voice is better than Thom's in that he seems to have much more control over it and sings "prettier" more often than Thom, but Radiohead are so much more lyrically and musically relevant than Muse that RH would always win over Muse for me.

As a vocalist Matt is a much more trained singer I think. He's also much more of an entertainer and a frontman but I generally prefer Thom to Matt. Thom has a much more unique and interesting voice. That's my point. I don't think we can. I don't think their music sounds enough alike. They're not going for the same things. The similarities are that they both use guitars, drums and bass. Both of their singers can reach a higher pitch. And they're both from the U.K.

In a world that's not just black and white, yes you need more similarities than just they both front UK rock bands. They are different types of rock bands, so their voices serve different purposes and may even sound different in the context of the music.

Let's compare Trent Reznor and Perry Farrell. They both front U.S. rock bands.

The more I listen to both bands, the less they sound alike. Especially musically. And Bellamy can hit much higher notes (or at least has attempted to more often on albums) than Thom. If you think I'm wrong, listen to Micro Cuts off of Origin of Symmetry. A tad pretentious (just because you can doesn't mean you should) but it's an interesting listen nonetheless.

it's not just a matter of hitting the notes. the muse guy has WAY more air when he sings than thom. like exponentially. he hits those high notes with power while thom tends to sound like he's reaching a bit more.

I can hear Matt kind of gasping for air during many of their songs too. Not saying it's bad, but it's definitely noticeable. Listen to "New Born" to hear an example of this. If you want me to hold your hand, you can notice it during the chorus at about 3:02 into the song. ;)

chairmenmeow47

that's fairly normal though. you have to find breaks in longer phrases for breaths sometimes. it would be nice if they could edit some of it out, but with his power, it's a bit unavoidable.

he has more breath underneath the note regardless. and you can hear that for the most part, he's not reaching up to the note but rather falling on top of it (sorry if that doesn't make sense). generally when you're singing higher notes, people tend to clench their body & mouth (and ultimately their air) to try and squeeze out that high note as if they are reaching UP to it. you really should be taking as much breath as possible, which then is aided by some sort of abrubt body movement like throwing your arms or doing a quick squat. that movement then helps you push the note out freely while the important parts of your body (mouth, throat & stomach) become relaxed because you've tricked the tension into moving into a non-important part of your body. the high note then just falls out easily and ultimately with more breath as a result instead of being squeezed out with a smaller amount of breath.

you can also tell by the roundness of the sound and the sheer volume. thom could never come close to that volume. thom definitely has had some training to use his air & raise his soft pallette, but for whatever reason, his higher notes are a bit more closed off & have less air than the muse guy.

not to mention muse guy is much better about holding out vowels than thom. singing is about air and it's about vowels. if you ever have to extend a note, it should always be the vowel sound you are extending, unless you are trying to make some sort of effect or point.

i'm sure someone with more training & talent than me could better articulate that, but those are my thoughts. i know that muse is one of my favourites to sing along to simply because i get to use all my vocal training from my former teacher, who was an opera singer. it's very operatic and has all sorts of fun low-to-high parts with fun vowels to hold :)

TallGuyCM

thanks, i stole it from my voice teacher :)

she was really good at explaining things based on how YOU understand them. i'm a visual person, so she always had me doing visual excercises to picture myself landing freely on a note or to make arm movements to pretend like i was pulling the note from the back of my head up & over.

she also spent years trying to get me to raise my soft pallette. it wasn't until she told me to imagine that my favourite movie star had just fallen through the ceiliing. i gasped in surprise and she said "that's it!". when you gasp and you feel your eyes raise and your cheekbones rise, you can also feel your soft pallette lifting. when you're singing, this should be raised at all time to let as much air pass through as possible.

ok, sorry, i'll stop :)

*still 9/14 official album release & maybe 7/20 or earlier release of the first single USoE*

That garbage is going to be part of the clue or something in Matt Bellamy's & Muse treasure hunt contest via Twitter. See what we & my fellow smart Muse fans in the official & Muselive message boards have theorized/speculated/come up so far in the link below ... some stupid endless headache inducing nerd obssessive shit guessing going on there heh heh ... Mr. Dalliard posted a great summary

Muse will never play at tiny Wiltern in LA again after selling out The Forum 2 years ago. But then they did mention that they might do few intimate gigs before ending their BH&R tour.

Wow, I liked the song when we had just the first few pieces, but now that we have that ending I can honestly say I don't care for it too much. Even the good parts sound like many other Muse songs, and that middle part (Eura-shaa!) might now be the most repulsive and terrible part of the band's catalog if you don't count Micro Cuts.

I really want to like it too, they're a very talented band and one of the most explosive live acts I've ever seen. Let's hope that the rest of The Resistance is a little more on point than that song.

The first two minutes are fantastic except for the fact that it sounds a little too like Queen as many have stated already. The Eurasia-SIA-SIA part is awful. I'm sure the album will be great. Looking back, I HATED Supermassive Black Hole as a first single. Everything about that song just made me cringe and the middle section before the solo "SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOOOOOOOOOOOLE" still does but that ended up being a great album. I'm not going to start forming opinions or assumptions and get ready to expect a crappy album just with this one song. I still have hope that this will be a really great album. Either way I can't wait to see them live again. Oh and it's hard to say that they will only play "a few songs" from this album in concert considering the way they've been hyping this album up. From what i've seen it sounds like they're really happy with it.

This is incorrect. I saw them twice on the Black Holes & Revelations tour, and they played almost that entire album each night. The only song from it that I didn't see live was Exo-Politics. But at the same time, they give you a solid 2 hour show, so it doesn't seem like new album overkill.
