Personally, I love Microcuts also and it has some great lyrics (though hard to decipher without a lyrics sheet) but I can also see how some many not like that song.
Just really hoping when Muse come back to USA in September they keep rotating some of the great songs they have been playing live.

For the return to the US, MK Ultra should be a regular and played at pretty much every gig. Guiding Light should not be. Bliss should be shuffled in at least for a few gigs, if not played at every gig. Also shuffle in Ruled by Secrecy some. And instead of Exo 1 on the encore, the encore should start with either Take a Bow or Citizen Erased, shuffle between those two. Sure, this isn't the best they could do with set lists, but its a realistic possibility that would be better than the US set lists they were doing.
Also, I know they are going to play NSC probably, since its gotten some popularity here, and that makes me sad :(

I may be biased because it's my favorite song in Muse's catalog, but in my humble opinion Citizen Erased is the best song they do live.
Definitely the best song they do live. Showbiz has the potential, but all the brain-dead fans that only know the radio singles from the past few years don't know it and won't pull their heads out of their asses, so...

Yeah I'm really bummed to know that four minutes of their set is gonna be devoted to that song. It's not even terrible or anything but fuck.

well honestly i wouldnt care TOO much since its something new (I'm hoping when I see them at Voodoo fest I don't see all songs i've already seen. I mean I'd see them anyway but I wanna hear something new), its just that theres so many better songs they could play instead of it.
If I was seeing them in like an arena or something where they probably wouldn't sacrifice any songs for it I wouldn't care but I'm seeing them at a festival where they usually play shorter set lists.
And the song isnt that bad (I've warmed up to it, I loathed it when I first heard it) but its still not great and would be a shame if that got played over something like Bliss or Citizen Erased

As long as we get Bliss or Citizen Erased or Unintended I'll be happy. We'll find out in San Diego in September with the first US Show...
Llama of Time
07-04-2010, 04:34 PM
I personally don't care to hear Unintended that much. I mean its not bad, but Showbiz, Muscle Museum, or Sunburn from Showbiz would be better choices. I'm totally behind playing Bliss and CE more though.
I really wish Showbiz and OoS had been more popular in the US, thats probably the main reason we don't get as many songs from those. Though we do at least get 3 songs from OoS at pretty much every show in New Born, Plug in Baby, and Feeling Good (First two should be, third one I understand why they play it but I'd rather Ruled by Secrecy or Sunburn for a piano song). BTW, why doesn't Matt play the piano intro on New Born? Watching live performances, I was looking forward to that, because the transition looked epic.
Though with all this complaining about set lists, I must say, I didn't care at all at the two shows I've been to, I still had an amazing time, and probably won't care at all still when I see them in October

British rock band Muse have revealed they are set to take a break when their current world tour comes to an end in December, but will begin recording a new album next year.
Muse are to take a break when their current world tour comes to an end.
Although the British rockers - who recently headlined at Glastonbury festival in Somerset, South West England - are due to start laying down tracks for a new record next year, the three-piece act think they deserve a break.
Bassist Chris Wolstenholme told NME magazine: "We'll definitely start working on a new album next year. I think the most time we've had off is about six weeks in the last 12 years, so we're due a break."
The 'Uprising' hitmakers - who won the O2 Silver Clef Award earlier this month for their contribution to the music industry over the past 12 months - admitted achieving success in the US was a surprise, but something the group really appreciated.
Chris said: "With America it was something we never really expected to happen, so I think it was one of those things we really appreciated, hopefully it'll carry on."
The 31-year-old rocker recently stated he didn't think playing alongside U2's The Edge for a rendition of 'Where The Streets Have No Name' at Glastonbury festival would be too hard to beat.
He explained: "That will be just too hard to top, so I think we'll leave it for the time being and appreciate the fact that we got to play with The Edge for three minutes."

Really wish I could see them in Oklahoma and/or at ACL, but Oklahoma is a bit too far and my ACL plans fell through
But on the bright side, seeing them at voodoo fest!
Have high hopes for a good setlist, or at least something different than what ive heard the two times ive seen them before. Wanna hear some new songs. But, its a festival so they dont have the towers restricting them (and they've been changing stuff up a lot for the european festivals) and its halloween so maybe that'll mean something special and its the last date of the US tour now that those other ones were canceled. Don't expect a super rarity or anything, just really wanna hear Take a Bow, Bliss, Citizen Erased, and/or MK Ultra.

I dont think Citizen Erased would work with the towers because of the piano outro, but very fair chance we get the others. Bliss and RBS have been played more lately and both got played on the first American leg, and B&H has been showing up a ton lately so I could see that out there. Not sure about Unintended but it could show up.
I'm thinking Bliss, RBS, and B&H all get played at least once this leg, probably at the LA shows.

I felt like Coachella's set was a non-stop onslaught on the senses. This time they slowed down things a lot but it was still rocking! Those lasers in the beginning (Uprising, Resistance) were blowing my mind. It was also nice to see what all the fuss was about regarding the towers. They're a cool gimmick but it definitely doesn't make the show.
On a side note, I wasn't feeling the crowd too much. I was sitting in section D (rear top right if you are facing the stage from the middle) and I think I was the only one in the vicinity really going at it with the music. Everyone else was either just standing there, hands in pocket, arms crossed, with the occasional fist pump. That's not the kind of crowd Muse plays to, imo. I loved the Coachella crowd way more! Or I just belong in the pits and next time I shouldn't be a cheap bastard and just spring extra the cash.
It didn't take away any of the fun though. I was just really worried the people next to me would get elbowed (thankfully nobody did).

So they are using the pillars again....
Its what they've done at every arena show on the tour, I doubted they'd change it.
They are really cool, but if I went to another concert I'd wanna see them without the pillars. Too restricting. Makes songs like Citizen Erased hard to do because the piano isn't on the ground with them, and you don't get the incredibly awesome ending riff to Uprising, and it pretty much restricts them to Uprising as opener with the intro and everything and allows for less setlist variation.
Worth seeing once but not multiple times.
Which is why I'm glad the only show im going to on this leg is a festival show so they won't have them. Hope they use the hexagon background they used for the english fests, its simple yet works.

Musewiki says they actually did do the riff version of Uprising last night, even with the pillars. Hopefully at least that will continue for the rest of this leg.

So they are using the pillars again....
I doubt that pyramid thing they were using in Europe would even fit in any arena here, and if it would I it would cut off a lot of fans to watch. I hope one day they do a stadium tour with the pyramid here, but probably never likely to happen.
Edit: Actually looking at pictures at that thing no way in hell it even has a chance of fitting inside an arena seeing as its almost as big as one itself.

Last night's show in SD was alright. I must say I really don't like the new album and the set list that goes along with this tour. I really prefer the Black Holes and Revelations tour. The pillars and lasers are cool, but that's pretty much it. The encore was the highlight for me. Exogenesis Pt.1 sounds really good live going into SS. And the Man w/Harmonica intro to KoC sounds more epic in a closed arena than it did @ Coachella. And what Matt did with his amp during the intro was cool, kind of cheesey, but pretty cool.

Ha. At the bottom left of the screen where the blue lasers are in the pit, I was right in the middle of that. They kept those things turned the entire night, and in between songs when it was dark, I felt like was tripping out.

My gut feeling is that we are not going to get any of the "gems" that were recently played in Europe. They pretty much stick to the same setlist every night (they did at Honda Center last night) and I highly highly highly doubt Bliss, Butterflies, Unintended, take a bow etc. will be played.
Disappointed that Europe gets longer sets, more setlist variation etc. but I guess thats just how it goes.

I dunno, i think its a good sign that we've already gotten RBS. I think Bliss and maybe Butterflies will both show up at least once. Dont know about Unintended or Take a Bow though.
Gah, Take a Bow would be such a better encore opener than Exo part 1, and they could still do the tower thing

Excellent show tonight. Still mulling it all over but man are these guys good! Highlights for me would probably be the obvious since I am still relatively new to their music so I'll make way for some more seasoned fans to comment on things like setlist, comparisons to past gigs etc. I'll say this- any band that segues from Van Halen's Eruption into House of the Rising Son (singalong) gets my love.

The show last night was amazing, I knew what to expect from the setlist so I was not disappointed when they didn't do take a bow, or Bliss. Let me just say this.....
This was my SEVENTH show of the Resistance tour...and I have NEVER seen the band like this.
To start I was in a terrible mood before the show due to major fight with ex-gf and couldn't meet ficklecycle in line earlier cuz I was so pissed.
Hearing "Ruled by Secrecy" was fucking fantastic and then Matt said "This is a really old song, I don't think we've played it in LA before" so I KNEW it was going to be something crazy and it was "Bliss!!!"
As if that wasn't enough the jamming at the end of Stockholm Syndrome was just so heavy and epic...again not done at any of the other Resistance tour shows I have seen.
Muse is just simply one of the best live bands out there. There's a reason there selling out massive arenas over the country and they sure as shit proved why tonight!!!!!!!

Fwiw (and that would be nuthin) I have never seen any of the Twilight films. I am a huge horror/sci-fi geek but no interest in that one. Yet I still just recently got into Muse-pretty much because of their performance at Coachella. My wife the same. She did not see them at Coachella but I took her tonight and she had a blast. The exact moment she got into Muse went something like this
Me: <drinking cold beer, long day at work, Take a Bow cranked>
Wife: Who is that you're listening to?
Me: Muse <Starlight>
Wife: They sound really good.
Later I caught her listening to them on her own when I came home one night.
Wife: I really like these guys. Are they playing live anytime soon, Mr. I Go To Every Show?
Me: Yup. I am going to one at Staples Center. They have a second night just announced.
Wife: We're going to that one together. Make it happen.
Ta-da! The first band spousal unit and I have had in common in quite some time! Great show tonight for both of us and thanks to these boards as usual for keeping me on top of getting good seats.

That 8 minute drop D jam was just insane. I knew Muse was going to hook up the LA crowd. Matt said in an interview a while back that his favorite city in America to play is LA and by the peformances and setlists this weekend I know he meant what he said.

They've said they really want a break and that they'll be recording the next album next year. And besides, they've hit almost every major area in the US on this tour. The only big one I can think of they havent hit is Florida
And few bands tour nonstop for 2 years for one album.

Take a bow would have been amazing to hear in LA but overall we got the better set list. I also think Exo pt 1 is a pretty weak opener.

Second night of LA did get better setlist, but its nice that they are actually changing things up
Also, I also thought Exo would be a really weak opener too, but I saw a video, and I think it worked well. They played it instead of We Are the Universe, but still had the intro with the people walking up the stairs.

I do like Uprising better as opener (Starts things off more with a bang), but having heard it twice as the opener now, I wouldn't mind hearing something different if I saw them again.

I agree, but I wouldn't trade the LA Sunday set for Take a Bow. Plus while it should be in any set and the encore I don't think it makes a good closer. I would put it in the beginning in place of Exo part 1.

I can't imagine why they don't just close every set in similar fashion to LA night two with Stockholm into riffs. As someone noted earlier, Knights of C felt a little weak coming afterwards, which should never happen since it's a great song.

This band isn't nearly as good as you guys make them out to be. I saw them last night. The only other time I had seen them before was Vegoose. They were tight and they had pretty lights, that's about it. They don't have many good songs and probably no great songs. The last show I saw was Swans so pretty much anything after that is going to be a letdown but Muse is not all that great.

I think they should do a lot of switching with the closer. Swap between Take a Bow and Knights and Stockholm Syndrome+crazy riffs
When KoC isn't closing, have it close the main set (3rd like at the two shows a few days ago could also work, the way it worked with the towers kinda looked awesome). When TaB isn't closing, have it open the encore. And have SS in its normal spot as second encore song or main set closer when its not closing.
All 3 are great for the purpose, have closed many times before, and would help make the setlist a little more unpredictable.
Also, Take a Bow should be in every set. It'd be 1000000x better encore opener than Exogenesis
And also, while it was kinda cool at first, I'm tired of Man With a Harmonica. I think it needs to be retired.

Well I just said Swans. Other shows I've seen this year better than Muse - Plastikman, Pearl Jam, Boris, Lightning Bolt, Dirty Projectors, LCD Soundsystem, Theo Parrish, The National, Silver Mount Zion, Derrick Carter, Titus Andronicus, The English Beat, Pavement, Decapitated, Faceless, Porcupine Tree, The xx, St. Vincent, I'm bored of this and that's all just from this year so there's no Tool, Radiohead, The Cure and all the other great live bands.

I like almost all of those bands and out of em all the only ones i would put in the same category as Muse are Tool and Radiohead - which are my 3 favorites. All three have multiple amazing albums and live shows that live up to them.
the reason why i ask is because im curious to see if our tastes are similar at all. i know many people who hate muse and love everything that i hate, so its interesting to me that someone might have a lot in common with me but still not be as into them as i am

I just don't think they're nearly as good as you do. It's as simple as that. I disagree that they have amazing albums. Considering what their albums offer, I don't see how they could be any better live. I just don't think there's any great songs on the albums.

I haven't seen a ton of shows this year but the only one I liked more than Muse was LCD Soundsystem. Seeing Muse again in a few weeks so they get another chance too.
And I'd argue that Absolution and Origin of Symmetry are pretty close to amazing at least. The other three are a bit too up and down to be amazing (Black Holes and Revelations has some of their best songs like Map, Knights, and Take a Bow, but falters in too many places, Resistance is just ok, nothing too special though it has some really good ones like Exogenesis and Showbiz is very up and down)

yea you're right. a reason isn't really necessary. music is subjective and personal afterall isn't it?. my instinct is to say something like all the huge numbers of people seeing them can't all be wrong - but by that logic the jonas brothers and miley cyrus and gaga would have to be on my list.

ah, Muse...such rebels
http://love-it-loud.com/news/muse-face-a-five-year-ban-in-australia/
Muse have never been the most controversial of acts but now face the possibility of being banned from performing in Australia for up to five years. The band’s bassist, Christopher Wolstenholme, allegedly smoked throughout the set, at first trying to hide his actions from the authorities. The show took place on Tuesday December 14th at the Ron Laver Arena in Melbourne. According to MTV; “A spokewoman for the venue said Muse were warned before the gig not to light up. “Officials spoke to the band before and after the show and we were extremely disappointed when they decided to flaunt our strict no-smoking policy,” Jo Juler said. “They are known as an anti-establishment style of performance group, but it was still sad that they decided to go ahead regardless”… Officials were also angry that Matt Bellamy encouraged fans to “mosh out” during the set, a direct violation of the venue’s strict rules. Moshing is banned in the country following the death of a teenage girl during Limp Bizkit’s set at the Big Day Out festival in 2001.”
