View Full Version : So You Think You Can Dance 2009 Thread

I figured with all the Idol fans on here, SOME of you would be watching SYTYCD. It starts tomorrow night (5/21), so I figured I'd start a thread where we can nerd out and talk about the show.

First, my attempt to win over the people who think the show is just Fox's version of Dancing With the Stars (weirdly, some of these dancers ended up as the pros on Dancing With the Stars):

Confession: Andy and I went to the season 3 live show when it stopped in Dallas. The only reason we didn't go last year is we couldn't get good enough tickets.

chairmenmeow47
05-21-2009, 11:32 AM
mia scares the shit outta me. i hate that type of dance too. i do enjoy impersonating it though and unfortuantely i can't really do that online :(

her dances basically look like people are deaf and trying really hard to communicate, or that they're trying to over-exagerate the vomit motion. god i hate that bedroom dancing crap. sorry :p

i hope we get another awesome routine from that hot guy who did that cool zombie looking dance.

rskapcat
05-21-2009, 11:42 AM
That hot guy is Wade Robson. ;)

A lot of Mia's routines come across as incredibly self-indulgent...I'll give you that. But I absolutely loved the bed routine from last season and the bench routine from season 2. Not to mention the routine from season 3 that was based on her getting to dance with her deceased father one last time. *sniffle* Makes me cry every time I watch it.

chairmenmeow47
05-21-2009, 12:01 PM

There weren't nearly enough bad performances last night.

And that male couple got fucked! Did the judges actually say that they had a hard time critiquing their performance because they're used to male-female samba routines?

Fuck's sake, man. Is this 1950?

rskapcat
05-22-2009, 08:18 AM
I really wish the male samba dancers had been better. The fact that they messed up opened the door for the criticism of their partnership & the analysis of the male-male dynamic.

paganman7
05-22-2009, 08:19 AM
If crazy Japanese hip-hop dancer could make it to Vegas, then those two certainly deserved to.

I agree, they aren't good enough to make the top 20, but come on.

i was laughing the entire time. i kept thinking; man, this is gonna be the last show. hahaha.

the offensiveness didnt bother me, but that he couldnt critic them without bringing it up did. if he doesnt like gay people, thats his deal, i dont care. he was just giving the impression that that was why he didnt like the routine. that bugged me.

paganman7
05-22-2009, 09:27 AM
I'd say that 40% of the dancers on the show are gay (99% of male contemporary dancers are gay). I would think people in that culture would have accepted it by now.

It's not like the show is "So You Think You Can BBQ Up Some Beef Brisket" and the judges are David Duke, Newt Gingrich, and Sean Hannity.

Fuck's sake, man.

chairmenmeow47
05-22-2009, 09:57 AM
i didn't watch the whole thing cause i was super tired. the guy in the black long sleeve shirt and what looked like black pants made by a retarded person and that red haired chick had me cracking up. that guy looked like he'd never seen the light of day.

i fucking hate nigel. he just looks for reasons to get rid of breakers. plus he's so condescending whenever there's a handicapped person "you're such a motivation". i also didn't appreciate his comments towards the male-male couple. though the reference to that stupid skating movie were funny.

marooko
05-22-2009, 10:00 AM
yeah, he can be damn condescending.

the part i understood about the male/male couple, was one of them wasnt the leader, they were trading off. and they didint need to say "playing the female role", they could have kept it to leader and follower. but offended, nope.

amyzzz
05-22-2009, 10:05 AM
I don't think Nigel was condescending AT ALL to the handicapped woman. What is he supposed to tell her? He can't be rude to her like everyone else when she clearly had many more obstacles to face in doing the audition than anyone else. She seemed pleased with what he said even though they couldn't use her on the show, so I think Nigel handled that very well.

The problem is when someone is clearly (or possibly) mentally ill, Nigel does seem to abuse those auditioners more because being mentally ill isn't always so apparent as physical handicaps (i.e. that "Sex" guy who has showed up in the past -- there's got to be something wrong with him, and Nigel roundly abused him for coming on the show all the time).

I watched this show yesterday for the first time. It is quite enjoyable.
I already do not like that Nigel guy. Mary does not bother me with her screams.....yet. And Sonia is very passionate about dance and seems to like everyone(almost). The dancers are,for the most part, fun to watch.

we watch them all on thursdays. you'd think it would be faster being able to fast forward, but when the girls end up talking, someone ends up pausing and it takes forever to get it going again. i never can stay for the whole thing, the girls end up watching till midnight at that rate.

i know a loooooooooot of people out here that are into hardcore. a fairly recent happy hardcore party that my friend mark throws sold out the marquee theatre here in arizona, a 1500 person venue. hardcore is serious shit out here for some reason. i think it has to do with all the people that were into metal and shit like that, but who knows. it's got a major following here though.

I don't think you can dance, Malcolm.

But seriously it is not the worst show. I have been watching television for like four straight days and I am telling you there are shows that are far worse. I love watching dancers getting famous. Also I love the fruit loop batty ass completely self obsessed judges make fools of themselves.

Didn't seem fair to me that the Miami ballet guy got to take up a spot the whole time up until tonight when he knew the whole time he was under contract, but tonight was the first one I saw this season so maybe there was a prior explanation.

Also, did that little blonde girl that fucked up her ankle or leg or something last year come back and audition again? I thought they said she had a free pass through the first rounds if she came back.

Also, did that little blonde girl that fucked up her ankle or leg or something last year come back and audition again? I thought they said she had a free pass through the first rounds if she came back.

That was like a season or so ago and they explained that she had gotten knocked up and had a kid sometime after her first try out and was happy to focus on being a mom as oposed to a dancer. Not that you can't be both.... just you know it's probably really hard to have a lil' baby and be on a grueling reality competition at the age of like 19. So she passed.

Last night's T20 ep was interesting, I'm not super obsessed with anyone yet, but sometimes that's a good thing. That way I won't be like the judges and be all disappointed by dancers not living up to their ridiculously "High Expectations".

Yeah, I am pretty dunzo with Mary's whole shtick. Other than that, last night was mostly fantastic. It's pretty good when the worst thing you can say is you danced a lackluster piece fairly well. My top 2 would have to be Wade's Crash Test Dummies (MmmmMmmmMmmmm.... sorry, can't help myself) and Tyce's moody Jazz routine. That Kazperhoweveryouspellhislastname kid may be short but he's got some skills.

My least fave was the "harder" Taboleon(Tabitha & Napoleon) routine with the kids in the pleather and the Tyce broadway routine. They just weren't quite as "on" as everyone else.

Also, am I the only one who has never been that big of a fan of that Caitlin chick... she did ok at the Bollywood number, but she does not do anything for me really. Her partner on the other hand I am really interested to see where he goes... I hope they're not stuck together for long.

I'm still not familiar enough with everyone to comment on dancer's by name but I thought the Bollywood number was well executed (although I have to say I'm not that big a fan of the style, it's super complicated and difficult but ends up looking so clumsy to me) and if the two dancers from the Broadway dance get voted off I shall not shed a tear because they were boring. My favorites were the cha-cha and the first hip hop dancers. I laughed aloud that the one choreographer used Richard Marx. Really? Richard Marx. I cannot accept that the song "Right Here Waiting for You" is a standard.

omg the opening number was amazing. i am sure going to miss my roommie's set-up when i move, the bass was awesome.

so our favourite besides phillip of course is the girl in the bollywood number. man, does that girl have strength! as one of my girlfriend's pointed out, she really has a good "core" or whatever you call it in yoga. when she did that handstand in front of her partner, she totally nailed it. such strength. that number was amazing and both of them made it look effortless. best dance of wednesday night for sure.

the crash test dummies were cool and again i think they picked the right people for that number. both of the people were charming, but not over doing it.

we all liked the black & red hip hop number that the judges didn't like, but it was pretty stiff competition. it seems like they have a better crop of dancers this year.

i can still say i'm not a fan of contemporary or the fox trot, christ, why do they bother dragging out the fox trot every year, NO ONE CARES!!!

i'm bummed that they sent paris home (i think that's her name). i thought she was cute.

oh well, i'm just glad phillip's still in the running. i'm hoping we'll either see the ballerina or the "her best quality is that she's hot & blonde" chick have some sort of breakdown this season; both of them seem like crazy pants to me. but the ballerina does have amazing strength, i'll give her that.

the tango was cool, but what was that sean crapston bullshit? it boggles my mind that at some point someone heard his voice and thought he should not only be paid to continue making noise, but also that someone thought his voice should be amplified and recorded, christ, what the hell was that?!?! it did provide a nice tear-in-the-crotch freeze frame shot, though it's not very easy to see it in this pic, damnit:

Last night seemed like everyone was just a smidge off the mark, like not bad, but just not as awesome as they could have been. Maybe I am just holding the dancers to higher standards this year.

As for choreography, good to see Brian and Shane Sparks. I always really liked Brian's stuff. The new SYTYCDCanada chick seemed ok if not quite up to Mia Michaels levels of awesomocity. Plus she gets props for song choice. Should be interesting to see what else she's got.

If pressed I'd have to say my faves were both of Brian's numbers, and I actually liked the jive. But like I said before everything was just a bit less than stellar so it could be a toss up as to who goes home.

The most successful ones have gone on to dance in touring productions on broadway or those big shows in Vegas. Also a bunch of them have gone on to be feature dancers on Dancing With The Stars.

Most dancers don't ever reach any sort of massive fame anyways, but yeah unless you actively follow these kids it does seem like they sort of fall off the face of the planet after the show. But that's not the point.... the show and the work they turn out during the show is the point.

well, we watched last week's and this week's last night, so i apologize if i get things mixed up.

that tango was excellent, man, that cuban is hot!!! i'm loving the ballerina more as time goes on, she really makes it all look effortless.

i was SO PISSED that phillip got sent home, but i understand their reasoning. thank the great good lord he will be on the tour. i am doing whatever i can to get tickets. his solos were just as amazing as ever, fuck nigel.

i was ELATED to see brand new day from the wiz (though wish it was the MJ version). also, the 7 nation army dance was sick. my now former roommate's boyfriend walked out and asked why there were a bunch of dead michael jacksons on stage though, that was hilarious. and i wish that bitchy gay guy would stop choreographing to west side fucking story though.

i think they sent the wrong girl home, but i do kinda see that caitlyn or however you spell it doesn't really have that star quality. i'm really liking the curvy brunette that was phillip's partner, best of luck to her.

ah well, i suppose i'll still watch without phillip, but it'll be hard. i felt so bad for them getting that russian routine. he really gave it his all too, you could see he was trying to smile and have fun. his kicks were good and all that, but i think they made it a bit too disney and less rusky (sp?). as hard as they tried, me and this other girl could not stop laughing. also, that chain thing was stupid.

anyone know when tour tickets go on sale?

So Janine and Jason doing Travis Wall's piece was one of the very best things I've seen on this show in a while. I've been waiting for Jason to kick things into high gear and I think he did that last night.

I think Evan held his own with Kayla, and his solo was just about as adorable as a basket full of puppies.

I didn't quite buy Ade and Janette together, and I think Kopono (sp?) was weak overall. I wasn't too impressed with Randi either. I think they could be bottom 2.

Uh, yeah, they made it happen with that piece from Travis. That kiss at the end totally drove it home. that was wonderful. As for Kapono, his dance the other day, about the drug or whatever. WOW!! That also I thought was brilliant. Last night, not so much, but that other one....nice!

This is my absolute favorite show. I haven't been around much so I missed half the season. I was a little dissapointed in Randi's performance last night. She fit better with Evan I think. They had this weird dynamic that made me want to see them advance. Seeing them with new partners was odd. I still love Randi though just because I hold a special place in my heart for white girls with big asses. Evan just doesn't have enough machismo to pull off the strong leading man role in alot of the partnering type dances. Unless he is playing a goofy dude it just doesnt fit. And for the love of all that is television stop making the poor kid dance without a shirt. I loved Travis' routine and actually got tears in my eyes watching it. Yes, I cry for SYTYCD.

Travis's piece was just brilliant. Absolutely loved it and Janine and Jason were just incredible. Ade and Janette wasn't my favorite, it just seemed a bit off. Randi and Kupono's looked painful, it just seemed a little slow for me. I don't know how to explain it. Kayla and Evan were pretty good. Glad to see he held his own. Melissa and Brandon did pretty good as well.

I always wonder if ending certain dances with a kiss is pre-meditated either by the choreographer or the dancers or if it's something that just comes naturally after such a passionate dance experience. Jason kissed Caitlin after one of their routines too, but that one felt like a plea for votes.... this one with Janine however felt very "real". I felt a bit like a voyeur to be watching it, the whole dance actually, and I think that's what really pushed it over the top for me.

I felt like they wanted to bone right there on the stage. They got really lucky to pull that number out of the hat because Nigel and Mary love to congratulate themselves on what a cultural phenomenon they've caused with SYTYCD. Anybody that got his dance would've gotten a standing O. I loved it though. Did you happen to hear the part where Debbie Allen said she knew Travis from when he was young because his mom was a teacher at her school? That made me think maybe Travis had special treatment in his season.

i dont recall the other one you mentioned but i do recall seeing some end where it was close to a kiss, but they didn't actually kiss. and yes, this one did seem real. it seems like they were so in to it, that was the right thing to do. not even that, but that is was what they wanted to do, it seemed so natural. definitely gave a voyeuristic feeling. i remember seeing some also where the female didnt really seem in to it. this was NOT the case here, they were both about it. it was amazing.

It was last season, because Will (the greatest dancer in the history of this show) was a former student of hers.

^Who Travis' Mom or Debbie Allen?! I know Debbie backed out last year cause of her connection to Will.

I just think dance is such a tight community and when you've been training for years and years it's hard not to have some connections. Not that all dancers on the show are as well connected, but I don't think there is anything shady going on, those kids just had an easier in probably than some of the other, but they still had to try out and prove themselves through the show like evryone else so I don't think it really matters.

Also I so called Randi and Kapono going home. Next week is gonna be hella tough. Can't wait for past dancers to come back for the 100th ep!

Yeah Ellen was a little pointless and distracting last night.

I have to say I think I've officially chosen Kayla as my favorite dancer, and while I love Jason I think he needs to knock it off with the emo tunes in his solo, they take away from his quality of movement.

As for pieces it was a weird night and nothing really wowed me, the "cancer dance" was gorgeous but not anything really groundbreaking. I liked the zombie hip hop(Kayla's makeup reveal was dope) and the Battlefield number had it's moments. I also thought the broadway was a solid routine.

I have no clue who will get the boot tonight. Evan/Ade? Janine/Janette? Could go anyway really.

chairmenmeow47

what was most distracting about ellen was the fact that mary and co. were laughing obnoxiously at every little thing she said.

wednesday's show was totally flat. and that hip-hop routine the judges loved (not the zombie but the army looking one) was totally not great at all. the guy (ade?) was MUCH better than the girl, but even then it wasn't a stellar routine. nigel & mary just like watered down hip hop or hip hop done by a famous choreographer. i hate when they get guest choreographers like that and everyone just kisses up to them because of who they are even if the routine isn't great. plus, you can tell that choreographer kinda phoned it in by using an american idol song. i dunno, i was not impressed by her at all. the zombie routine was good though, i agree. i really hate anything that's emotional & contemporary, so the cancer routine affected me in no way whatsoever. and my grandpa died of cancer so it's not like i can't be moved, i just think it was way too sappy and hitting you over the head with it. the rave from 2300 that travis choreographed could have been really cool if they would have kept the lights down for most of it. it looked silly to have the lights up in those costumes.

the 100th episode was AMAZING. wade is so so so so so so sexy. he really shined in that ramalama bang bang song, which i want a copy of. i'm SO glad they got hok to come back and do the humming bird routine too. that chairman's waltz song gets me all teary-eyed every time. and actually, katie holmes wasn't terrible once she got outta that stupid street scene. obviously the vocals were improved & she wasn't even trying to pretend like she wasn't lip synching, but it was cute and she's got some killer legs. better than i expected.

i'm sad the girl went home that did. i loved her jazz routine, but man that rumba didn't really help. such slow music on wednesday night. that waltz in the yellow dress made me stabby it was so slow. it must kinda suck to pull a routine like that, knowing everyone will hate it, and then someone else pulls the "cancer" routine which is an automatic win in a sense.

personally, i think a girl is going to win. none of the guys really stand out to me.

I loved last nights show and seeing all the old familliar faces, or Cat's "babies" coming back. I have watched this show since the first episode (2005, dang!) and despite a few quirks that get annoying over time (Mary Murphy... Nigel...) this really is just the most joyous and awesome celebration of dance for dance sake. I love it.

Seeing The Humming Bird and The Flower, The Bench, and Ramalama again only served to prove the difference between stellar and simply decent choreography. Also Wade Robson is the shit, and seeing what he's become makes me feel far less nerdy for having learned some of his earlier choreography (I was a huge *NSYNC fan. Haha).

I was shocked about the girl that went, even though I named her yesterday as potential b2, I thought it would have been Janine instead. I was so sad to see that particular guy go though, he's adorable and a gorgeous dancer, I just don't think he was quite where he needed to be yet. I really thought it was Evan's time last night though, huh.

Katie Holmes was ok I guess, but compared to some of the broadway routines they do on this show that just seemed like she was stylistically walking around stage. It's for charity though I guess so, way to go.

i think that guy that went home is adorable too and also a very talented dancer. none of my girlfriends seem to like him, but i remember noticing his talent in the audition. his technique really could not be argued. i just think he lacks a bit of the performance or star quality, but he is adorable, he makes it look effortless and i was sad to see him go. also the girl, but the girls are all a bit stronger this year and at this point it's hard to tell who will go home cause the blonde is pretty good too. i really thought evan would go home too, i was surprised.

she definitely was just stylistically walking around stage, but i didn't expect her to really dance. she looked like she was having fun so i enjoyed it. i've also been watching since the first episode, so last night's was really awesome for me too. i didn't realize you could win emmy's for these performances, lol. i was also glad to get a quick glimpse of pasha in the audience :x

I cried again while watching Bleeding Love. The part where he takes heart just kills me.

I thought Evan should have gone home. Loved Ade. Love Evan in his own style, but he is consistently subpar in all partner dances. I want him to succeed, but I don't think he deserves to win this just because he's a wee Gene Kelly. I'm rooting for anyone but Evan at this point.

I actually watched two episodes of this show this season; my first time catching it. I still find the concept a bit hard to swallow. Dancers work largely in ensembles, so picking 1 favorite seems a bit silly and doesn't feel like a natural progression, as it does on Idol. That being said, there were some very talented dancers on this season. Unfortunately, a lot of the choreographers are seriously sub-par. The two best choreographed pieces I saw were the group bollywood number for all of the remaining females (that was electric!) and the startlingly lovely contemporary piece that Mia Michaels choreographed for the final two girls.

BTW, with the silly confection of Fame and the awful choreographed Oscar ceremony sequences from the late 80s and early 90s, we can sometimes forget that Debbie Allen, despite her deficencies as a choreographer, was an incredible dancer in her youth.

As Anita she is absolutely stunning here. She moves with such ferocity. Perfectly cast. Now, Jerome Robbins, that was a great choreographer. 1980, Broadway:

So I was kind of glad that Paula Abdul left AI so I wouldn't have to sit through anymore of her blah blah blahing and flirting with Simon. Now she is a permanent guest judge in SYTYCD when she decides to show up and that Adam Shankman guy is a full time judge who annoys me as well. I was really looking forward to this season because I liked several of the dancers that made it through. And after last nights performances I think it might be a great season, except now with crazy paula, crazy screaming Mary and overly emotional Adam I may have to skip it.

MusicIsMyBoyfriend
10-28-2009, 10:07 AM
Adam doesn't bother me so much, as at least he attempts to give critiques. Mary on the other hand is pointless and annoying and a waste of time. Paula Abdul would only add to what there is already too much of. But I pretty much FF the judging panel anyway. I know enough about dance to be my own judge.

I was underwhelmed last night though. Nothing gave me too much of a shock wave of awesome though there were some nice moments. Also I thought they sent the wrong girl home, her solo was stronger compared to the other girls. The new stage seems so large for this part of the competition. They don't all own it quite yet.

MTV show judge charged with child molestation

LOS ANGELES—A judge from the MTV show "America's Best Dance Crew" has been arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of molesting an underaged girl.
Police spokeswoman April Harding said Shane Sparks was arrested at his home Friday, the same day prosecutors filed an eight-count felony complaint accusing him of multiple lewd acts upon a child. The complaint alleges the molestation began in 1994, when the girl was under 14 years old, and continued for several years.

Sparks is being held on $590,000 bail. An e-mail message submitted on his Web site was not immediately returned.

He teaches at a North Hollywood dance studio and works as a hip-hop choreographer. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the Fox series "So You Think You Can Dance."

NOOOOOOOOOO! i love him.

what did everyone think of the winner? the other guy was CLEARLY a better dancer, but i think russell (is that his name?) definitely improved throughout the show and was a better winner for the theme of the show.

I think Jakob will get work regardless, he was just that good, so I was really kind of pulling for Russel. Although I also really liked Cathryn and wanted her to win a little too.

MusicIsMyBoyfriend
12-21-2009, 11:53 AM
I really rooted for Russell during the audition/early rounds, but for some reason over the course of the competition I got bored with him. Also I read after the finale an interview of him where he stated that he had taken like 4 yrs at some dance school, which totally left a bad tatse in my mouth, because he got so much praise for being this guy from the streets who Krumps and how the heck is he doing so awesome at all this other stuff. I mean he worked hard and deserves to win for that and for having a larger fan base, and all those other kids have their dance backrounds as well. I just feel like his was kept in the closet to overplay his "Growth". I think going into the finale I was rooting for Kathryn who for me was the most solind dancer all season, but during the show I really really hated seeing ellanore get cut. She was freaking awesome and had one of the stronger performances on the finale show. And Jakob is just an amazement.... win or no win he will have a dance career. The Dilello's were sweet, but were never gonna win this thing.

But seriously that finale results show was so strange, like the most slapdash mish mosh mess. I loved the opening number though.
