Gorillaz deserves a proper thread...

Grrrz...

New Gorillaz album not likely until 2010

Manager says Damon Albarn has a 'plethora of tracks' though

Damon Albarn has enough material for two new Gorillaz albums – but his manager has warned fans not to expect a new release until next year.

The prolific musician is keeping busy with his animated hip-hop project alongside this year's Blur reunion.

But his manager Chris Morrison told BBC 6Music that it isn't yet clear when or how they would be released. "He's got a plethora of tracks at the moment," he said. "Whether they all make the light of day or get refined and come down to a normal amount you get on a record of ten to 15 tracks, I can't tell at this point in time. It's far too early in the stage of what we are doing."

Morrison said that he did not want to rush Albarn with the creative process. "It'll come round when it's ready and when it's been finished and when he's happy with what he's done," he said. "There is no point putting art around schedules, you put schedules round art and what you need first of all is Damon's music.

"The plan for the new Gorillaz album is we'll wait until Damon's finished recording it. The thing is, it's formulating at the moment and it's going to be out in about a year's time, I hope. I'm probably pre-empting something I'll get shouted at for."

Gorillaz' last album, 'Demon Days', was released in May 2005.

I hope we get a tour too.

:( At least Paul tried, that is all I can really ask for. I hope that the only reason they didn't want to play was because of the Blur reunion and the Gorillaz album not being done.

It was certainly an interesting experience. I saw them twice, and the first time was bizarre because it was a nearly free show and no one had any idea what to expect. The second time was just kind of boring... Their songs are near perfect but just don't seem to translate well live for me.

Gorillaz come up with some Horrors

The Horrors sure have a good way of capturing the attention of high-profile musical outfits. After all, fresh off its opening stint on Nine Inch Nail’s “Wave Goodbye” tour, the British garage outfit has now found itself working collaborating with none other than the Gorillaz.

Damon Albarn, the main force behind The Gorillaz, recently invited the Hot Topic poster children down to his studio, 13, to work on the followup of the 2005 album Demon Days.

In an interview with BBC, Horrors bassist Rhys Webb revealed how it all went down, explained Albarn initially sent him an email saying only “Would you guys be able to come down to my studio at some point?”

When they met up, Albarn expressed his adoration for the band and asked them to collaborate on the new Gorillaz album.

“He played us a lot of tracks he’d been working on and musically they were just in a really similar place to where we were at the moment — rhythmically and the instruments that were going through the sound — so it made perfect sense for us,“ Webster explained.

Previous Gorillaz collaborations have included Dan The Automator, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, D-12, Redman, Dangermouse, and De La Soul. However, The Horrors are the first guitar based band to collaborate on a Gorillaz album, which was one of the reasons they were chosen for the job.

In return for their talents, Albarn mixed The Horror’s new single, “Whole New Way,”, as the band was not happy with the original version.

As previously reported, the new Gorillaz album is due out sometime soon, however, neither title nor release date for the project has yet to been revealed.

This thread reminded me to listen to The Horrors again today. I had forgotten how good they were. It still amazes me how they sound like a completely different band on the second album. The first album is obviously heavily inspired by The Cramps with some horrorbilly mixed in, as well as 80s punk and post-punk. The new album sounds like MBV, Joy Division and Portishead had a bastard child.

dunno, what makes someone a guitar band? the bees could be considered a guitar band and have collaborated with gorillaz. they didn't play guitar on the song, but that's not technically what was said. I tend to read things very literally though.

turns out the redman track is called 'gorillaz on my mind' and is only available on the blade 2 soundtrack. "Despite being retitled however, it is a version of 19/2000 that removes 2-D's vocals and adds a Redman rap" http://www.gorillaz-unofficial.com/discog/songgorillazonmymind.htm hmm this one managed to slip past me in the past. interesting.

When I read the headline I thought this had to do with the hopefully upcoming Gorillaz album. Someone needs to tell Damon and Jamie to focus...

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett enlist 'Watchman''s Alan Moore
Gorillaz pair working with Moore on new opera

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have recruited comic book writer Alan Moore for their next joint project.

Moore, who wrote the 'Watchmen' comics (which were turned into a film earlier this year), confirmed the news during an interview with Mustardweb.org about his new magazine Dodgem Logic, which is due to launch in November.

"They came down to Northampton last week because we're planning for me to do the libretto on their next opera project," he explained.

Although Moore didn't reveal any specifics, the project he spoke about could allude to 'Carousel', which Hewlett first referenced in 2008. He said that Albarn had written 70 songs for the project, which was likely to appear on film and stage and be even more ambitious than the duo's 2008 opera 'Monkey: Journey To The West'.

Moore also revealed that he hoped to get the animated band to feature in one of his future comics. "We've hopefully got Gorillaz on board [to appear in a forthcoming issue of Dodgem Logic]," he said.

I liked it--definitely worth a listen if you enjoy Damon's work. Obviously it's a bit different because it's music for an opera, but think Asian-flavored Gorillaz with less song structure and you can kind of get an idea of what you are in for. oh my... the audio part of the guardian interview (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/nov/28/showing-off-damon-albarn) apparently revealed a lot about the new album:

The title 'Plastic Beach' is confirmed for the third album.
He got the inspiration for the title Plastic Beach from looking at plastic in the sand in a beach near his house in Devon in the UK. Damon also says he wants to express "the idea that plastic, we see it as being against nature but it’s come out of nature. We didn’t create plastic, nature created plastic." (more context in the interview transcript below) He also compares shows like the X-Factor and American Idol to "buying a ready made meal in loads of plastic packaging" and says Gorillaz albums are intended to be an alternative to that, pop, but with some kind of depth.
The album features the sounds of some seagulls recorded on a landfill site near London, to give it a real plastic beach feel.
The album features Snoop Dogg on a track. (Damon also confirmed that previously rumoured or mentioned artists Lou Reed, Mos Def, Barry Gibb and Bobby Womack would appear on the record).
Damon has put more thought into making the lyrics and melodies clear on this record than those on Gorillaz and Demon Days.
Damon feels this is the most pop record he has ever made. He says that although he recorded with orchestras in the making of the record, only small parts of the recordings will be on the final album.
Work on the album can be traced back to work on the project Carousel which was about 'the mystical aspects of Britain' and although it is now Gorillaz it 'still maintains a lot of that melancholy'.

snoop dogg! seagulls!

I have no idea what Carousel is.

With how much I love the first two Gorillaz albums, I have no reason not to trust Damon.

But this interview here...

shakermaker113
11-29-2009, 11:29 AM
check this out... apparently he got barry gibb to collaborate despite him not having any idea who gorillaz was.

PM: Hence Barry Gibb. What do you think he thinks of you?

DA: He didn’t even know what Gorillaz was. And knows now.

PM: Did he know you?

DA: Who knows. He lives in Miami in a marble palace. Why should he know about me? [laughs] No, I don’t actually know, I haven’t spoken to him. Bobby Womack had no idea but now we’re great friends. Snoop, because he’s [on] there, he knew about Gorillaz. He was a big fan. So it was very easy to get him. Lou Reed, he knew about me, Mos Def, I’ve known him for years. Well, Bobby Womack got into it because his youngest daughter was a big fan. So that’s how he got into it, and had it all explained to him. But I think Barry Gibb was was completely oblivious of everything. But you know, he’s Pop... [Damon searches for a term to describe Barry Gibb] what’s the most valuable thing on earth? [laughs] He’s that, isn’t he. He is on that pantheon of sublime Pop music. For whatever reason.

Sleeping Lion
11-29-2009, 12:29 PM
The album features Snoop Dogg on a track. (Damon also confirmed that previously rumoured or mentioned artists Lou Reed, Mos Def, Barry Gibb and Bobby Womack would appear on the record).

Mos will definitely be the greatest addition since Del.
> =

Damon has put more thought into making the lyrics and melodies clear on this record than those on Gorillaz and Demon Days.

I don't feel a need for this. I think the great part of most bands is what you don't hear. The "mystery" of what the singer(s) is trying to get across. Thus breeds imagination.

Damon feels this is the most pop record he has ever made.
:rolleyes

Good read, thanks.

it wasn't a year. demon days was released early summer (june?). they played manchester in september or so, and new york in march or april.

I'm listening to the audio of the interview with Damon and it definitely sounds like there won't be anything more from Blur, and no real Gorillaz tour.

my thoughts as well. it sounds like he has too many other plans. finishing up gorillaz + (new project) album, heading to africa after that, desires to do another good bad & queen album (notice how he refers to the project that way now despite insisting it never had a band name). it sounds like gorillaz live shows aren't even on the horizon.

but then he is prone to change his mind easily.

BlackSwan
11-30-2009, 07:50 PM

Gorillaz, "Plastic Beach" (Parlophone/EMI)
Release Date: March 2010

With Gorillaz' last album, "Demon Days," selling more than 5 million copies globally, according to EMI, including 2.2 million in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, small wonder collaborators are once more lining around the block to appear on the follow-up. "It's probably the first album ever to feature both Snoop Dogg and Lou Reed," Parlophone president Miles Leonard says with a laugh. "But Damon Albarn's vocals are much more apparent on this album, too-he's right across this record; it's not just guest vocalists." De La Soul and U.K. alt-rockers the Horrors have also worked on tracks, while Bobby Womack and Mos Def feature on the album's lead single, "Stylo," due at U.K. radio in early January and described by Leonard as "a dark, twisted track that sounds like the 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack on MDMA." Albarn, who took time out from the sessions for Blur's successful summer reunion tour, is also producing the album, while Leonard praises Jamie Hewlett's visuals for the album's video and Web content as "stepping up to the next level."

BlackSwan

The only date that has been scheduled is Coachella. This was the rumor that ended up being true:

"Gorillaz have been signed to headline Coachella 2010... Damon flew back last night from New York last night after some promotion work on PB [Plastic Beach]. But only one venue confirmed! Some problem with Lou Reed not committing to live dates. Dont know the full story on that one though. But thats not just it, its getting increasingly more expensive to put on a Gorillaz show." According to our source no other Gorillaz live dates have been officially booked at this time.

I have to imagine they may play a show or two in the UK, or may be something else random, but don't hold your breath.

Yup, just ran through The's "Do Not Give a Chance" checklist. Sorry Gorillaz.

Apology accepted. but don't let the butt pirate named Sbessio keep you away from Plastic Beach. Paddle fast and furiously.

Definitely doesn't sounds like a single, I dunno how the ordinary person would feel about this. I in the other hand, am feeling it, very old school mixed with new school.

I heard the demo version first which was kinda cool by itself, but I enjoy the single version even more so far.

It's got a cool 80s electro club feel to it.

Wait. ...... ........Bobby Womack just showed up.........don't like him.

I bet this song is going to be super awesome.

Also, I feel the same as some of you on "Stylo." Digging everything but Bobby. Wish it was more Def and Albarn.

Lots of Gorillaz updates today! Just hours after first single "Stylo" (featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack) leaked, it has been announced that the new Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach, will be out in the U.S. on March 9 via Virgin. "Stylo" will be be officially released January 26.

Here's the story behind the album, according to a press release: "The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet."

Guests on the album include Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Barry Gibb, De La Soul, Mark E. Smith from the Fall, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, and Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash.

The full tracklist, along with the "Stylo" single cover, is below.

Plastic Beach:

01 Orchestral Intro (ft. Sinfonia ViVA)
02 Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach (ft. Snoop Dogg and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
03 White Flag (ft. Kano, Bashy, and the National Orchestra for Arabic Music)
04 Rhinestone Eyes
05 Stylo (ft. Bobby Womack and Mos Def)
06 Superfast Jellyfish (ft. Gruff Rhys and De La Soul)
07 Empire Ants (ft. Little Dragon)
08 Glitter Freeze (ft. Mark E Smith)
09 Some Kind Of Nature (ft. Lou Reed)
10 On Melancholy Hill
11 Broken
12 Sweepstakes (ft. Mos Def and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
13 Plastic Beach (ft. Mick Jones and Paul Simonon)
14 To Binge (ft. Little Dragon)
15 Cloud of Unknowing (ft. Bobby Womack and Sinfonia ViVA)
16 Pirate Jet

I didn't know about the Little Dragon collaborations... Interesting. They are playing Coachella on Friday, but I guess they'll be sticking around to perform with Gorillaz on Sunday.

March 9th? That is way sooner than I expected! Exciting. What about The Horrors though? I thought they were collaberating on this album. Those tracks get scratched?

I am probably most excited to hear the song with Mick Jones and Paul Simonon.

Oh, snap. For some reason I was thinking that Plastic Beach didn't get out til the summertime, and that we were going to be hearing all the songs for the first time in April at Coachella, maybe that's just what I was assuming based on the way people were talking.

the lost collaborations will probably appear as b-sides somewhere. that happened with a couple of demon days songs I think. I'm surprised no mention of barry gibb on that track list though, damon's been talking that one up a lot.

Womack also thought Gorillaz was a band of actual gorillas until it was revealed to him that the band was in fact the side project of Blur’s Damon Albarn.
