"The beauty of this album is that we have a wealth of tracks that we can release as singles," continues Leonard, who foresees the Gruff Rhys and De La Soul collaboration Superfast Jellyfish following first single Stylo, with Melancholy Hill to be released later in the year.

Nice! Melancholy Hill will be a single, that is definitely one of my top 3 favorites.

Gorillaz will make their first live performance of Plastic Beach at LA's Coachella festival on April 18, a gig Morrison says will be a precursor to extensive live shows throughout the year, including UK dates, but a summer filled with festival appearances looks unlikely.

"We are doing very few festivals this year. I would prefer to go out and have the band play their own headline shows first," says Morrison.

Considering Gorillaz consist of fictional animated characters whose lives unfold online, there is no small challenge when it comes to convincingly bringing them to life onstage, and while Albarn and his fellow Gorillaz musicians have in the past performed behind a skrim, Morrison reveals that the Plastic Beach shows will push them very much to the fore.

"When we started it was the house band performing behind a skrim, we would shoot visuals above the stage and backlight the skrim so you could see the performers as well," explains Morrison. "We are developing that, but the band no longer performs behind a skrim and a large number of the guests on Plastic Beach will be on stage."

http://www.californiachronicle.com/articles/yb/142088164

And we're going to get to see the band more... Can't wait to see what they do.

I wonder if "first live performance of Plastic Beach" really means they will be playing the whole album.

So it sounds they will be playing Plastic Beach in it's entirety... or at least a large chunk of it, awesome. I guess they'll have to skip Some Kind of Nature though :(. Also the fact that you will actually be able to see the performers makes me very happy.

I figured "On Melancholy Hill" would eventually be a single. The song is just too damn catchy/poppy not to be. I can't wait to hear it live.

I was at my favorite bar last night, and XM radio was playing Stylo... multiple people came up to the bar and said "who is that? I can't read the screen."

I said: "GORILLAZ MOTHER FUCKER. COACHELLA!"

The only reason I thought they wouldn't play it, is because that part is actually sung (as opposed to spoken word or rap). Maybe Damon will just sing his part, I would prefer that to hearing a recording of Lou Reed.

Here's how I hear "Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach" in the context of the album, and why Snoop's delivery is absolutely perfect for the track. The song is a set-up (obviously), but it's also a contemporary re-styling of what George Clinton does on Parliament tracks like "P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" by bringing a bit of low-key smooth. There were one or two songs on the album it took me until the second or third time through to get, but that was never one of them.

I've listened to the album more than 10 times over the past few days, and I love it more with every spin. It's going to be hard for other albums in 2010 to top this for me.

I think I just feel that Snoop sucks immensely now, whether it fits the song or not. I think I might like that song if there wasn't such a boring rapper involved, or if they could time travel to 1993 and have Snoop lay some vocal tracks back then.

Also, I've been listening to the album a lot lately, cause it didn't HIT me at first. But listening to it as a whole, paying attention to every detail, has really made me appreciate the album.

At first, Glitter Eyes was a little cheesy to me I'll admit. But after listening to it over and over again, I can only imagine how insane this is going to sound live.

I believe it has something to do with the way the intertubes work. P-ing is a pretty standard command for testing to see if a server or computer is connected to the internet. According to Murdoc, Mos Def's character is the mysterious caped figure (or Boogie Man) in the "Stylo" video...

Tell us about your night with Mos Def at The Box.

Mos wouldn’t stop yapping about someone called The Boogieman. I thought it was just the cocktails talking, but Mos said he’s a dark entity, a black-caped figure made up of all the evil in the world. Turns out that Mos was right! We’ve got the Boogieman in our “Stylo” video. Anyway, some naked guy kept hassling us and a fight broke out. Mos spilt, but I stayed on and the thing just escalated. Some midget in a tux punched this clown out, and the stage act, some transvestite chick, burst into flames.

By the time they let the leopard out, I’d had enough and left. Is it always like that over there?

I was excited for a few days but I have to agree with this. It does fall flat. That said, I never loved their previous work. I look at Gorillaz as more of a multimedia experience than just music so I figure seeing them perform live at Coachella will be great. The albums just aren't anything i'll ever listen to on a regular basis, sing along to, love or feel some deep emotion towards. A few fun songs all in all but nothing I can be a passionate fan of.

He repeats the same two lyrics about 40 times, that's how. That and it's 2 fucking minutes long. Oh, and it's the same fucking tune the entire time. It's just a chorus. That's it.

Randy, please describe the difference between a "bad song" and a "not a song."

A song has more than one part to it. If your track is just a chorus it's not a song. It's a fucking snippet.

Are you talking about the song with Mick Jones and Paul Simonon? It's 3 minutes and forty-seven seconds long.

Wrong. Plastic Beach is a pretty standard pop song with verses and a chorus. There's a bridge too (barely though). How is that not a real song?

Monklish

You're right, I meant to be talking about the last song. Apologies for the confusion.

FoxeyLady

You're right about Welcome To The World of the Plastic Beach, Pirate Jet and Glitter Freeze not being standard songs in the way they are structured (or lack thereof). But to say the album is full of "not real songs" is a vast overstatement. I look at those songs as sort of interludes that help give the album it's identity. And if you judge a "real" song by song structure and lyrical variety, then practically every dance track ever made is not a "real song".

Monklish
03-08-2010, 10:48 AM
Most dance tracks aren't the exact same all the way through, actually. Even that ridiculously puerile idiotic fucking genre has enough respect for the audience to put in a fucking change.

But yes, they're mostly barely songs.

I wonder what our surprise is tomorrow morning?

The rumors I have heard is that those who ordered get their car signed by Jamie, and the possibility of rehearsal access. Both would be cool in their own right.

GANGSTER

Bashy:
Hey
Look
Yo!
No castaway, no survivor
I ain't lost and this ain't shipwrecked
I feel small in this big wide world
and mommy ain't said 'Honey, I shrunk the kids' yet.
I ain't Jesus, but i'm walkin' on water.
There's no bums here, there's no wall cause:
I can break out of jail with a lighter,
so is there any point in makin' laws blood?
This ain't Atlantis, are you sure?
I nearly suffocated when I touched the shore.
No Rain. Condoms(?) Imported(?)
Up the road, you'll never guess who I saw.

Kano:
It's K.A. look, skip on the beat like Ali in the gym.
Honey, I'm home. This is where I wanna live.
Disbanded like leave-oh!
on the d-low.
I don't know if it's greener, but it's green though:
on the other side of the fence.
Bind to the ends.
Look:
No fence, no stress, no rent, no supervision shit,
this real flow.
Where the women look hot, but the beach cold,
and the speech goes like, "Hi little lady."
Sex on the beach, wanna try for a baby.
Word in the village, I'm a little bit crazy.
Swag up on a hundred degrees, not eighty.
Look, if heaven had a VIP
this is it: white sand, blue sea,
but I don't know who they are,
and I'm damn sure they don't know me,
but I come in peace!

B: Cool! White Flag! White Flag!
K: No War!
B: No Guns!
K: No Corps!
B: Just life.
K: Just Love
B: No Hate.
K: Just fun.
B: No ties.
K: Just me and my mind.
B: Just me and my wife.
K: But tell me if I'm dreamin'
'cause I don't wanna wake up till the evenin'
B: and I don't wanna be left sleepin'
from all the diseases
that I breathe in.
K: Look, respect the island, no stealin'!
B: and don't bring religion here, no three kings.
K: It's great and we ain't leavin'!
We come on in peace. Sing!
B: White flag?
K: White flag!

How do you know? I never got the email.

Edit: You're wrong. I just emailed the G-Club and they got back to me in under 5 minutes with this...

I'm sorry for the confusion and any frustrations this may have caused but please don't worry we have had to put back the launch of the G Club and the special announcement slightly. An email is going out to all members shortly and we'll keep you updated. Please be assured your order has gone through correctly.

Dear G Clubbers

We are not ready to make the G Club special event announcement quite yet.

G Club members will be the first to be told and there will still be plenty of time to take up this offer.

Do keep an eye out for further updates as we will mail you directly when the announcement is ready.
