I'm almost all the way through. Really solid apart from the first two tracks (after the intro track). I'm currently on Sweepstakes. Seriously, Mos hasn't done anything worth listening to since Black Star. Some Kind of Nature vaguely reminded me of Cupid De Locke by the Smashing Pumpkins.

I see what they are getting at with the review, and Randy touched on it as well. Just because we love some of these songs doesn't mean they are good pop tracks like Feel Good was. Stylo is pretty much it as far as what comes closest to getting to that type of song, but I think Womack will turn a lot of people off from it. I agree with the score as well.

BlackSwan
03-01-2010, 12:51 PM
I think the lack of a producer besides Damon on the album led to songs that are poppy, but not as catchy as Feel Good Inc. and DARE. With that said, I think the chorus of Superfast Jellyfish is pretty catchy.

I think it's Snoop that ruined it for me. His voice/style overpowers everything else about the, albeit short, song.

It sounds like a Snoop, not a Gorillaz, track. Maybe placed elsewhere in the album it wouldn't have been so weird to me. I'm very particular about opening tracks. I realize it's not technically the opener though.

Rhinestone Eyes: Not bad, but a forgettable track
Stylo: Great song. We all know that. Move on
Superfast Jellyfish: First time I heard this track, skipped out on the megamix and didnt listen to the leak of this track. I quite enjoyed it. Very fun
Empire Ants: HOLY SHIT BALLS. Amazing song
Glitter Freeze: Fantastic. Im gonna be dancing so fast when they play this.
Some Kind of Nature: LOVE Lou Reed in this song. It makes me sad he wont be at Coachella to perform it.
On Meloncholy Hill: Beautiful song. Love it
Broken: Decent track... nothing really special though.
Sweepstakes: Didn't really like it when it first started. But by the end I loved it. The way the brass section goes from a quiet background part of the song, to a more prominent part is brilliant.
Plastic Beach: Love Paul Simonon's bass work here. Don't here much guitar though. I wonder what Mick Jones contributed.
To Binge: This song makes me want to see Little Dragon at Coachella.
Cloud of Unknowing: Could feel the album starting to wind down. Good placement for this song.
Private Jet: This shit need to be longer. Great song.

From one listen, I would say this is definitely the weekest Gorillaz album so far... but that is only from one listen. With that being said as well, Empire Ants and Glitter Freeze may be 2 of the best things Damon has ever done.

EDIT: I just can't get over how fast the album flew by. Time to give it another spin.

That's cause Demon Days was just packed full of awesome tracks. The live DVD of Demon Days with them all performing in Manchester is still one of my favourite all time concert dvds, and it's regularly on my play cycle for when i'm doing odd jobs around the house.

Still, Plastic Beach is growing on my, and i've got Stylo stuck in my head at the moment, it replaced Rhinestone Eyes which was there earlier ;)

Ive gone this thing a good number of times now. If I had to score it I'd give it something like a 7. If Pirate Jet was after Broken and that was the close of the album, it would be a 8.5.

I really think those last 4 songs are the weakest on the record, dont belong, and to make it that more obvious, they are all stuck together at the end. I know most of you like some of those tracks but they feel extremely out of place to me both thematically and stylistically. I really tried with Sweepstakes, but it is my least favorite track on the album, narrowly beating out To Binge. I love Empire Ants though, as well as Stylo and Rhinestone Eyes. Certainly not on par with Demon Days, but it's a solid release with a lot to listen to.

I wasn't complaining about the quality of the collabs, just saying they're all over the album and there might be too many for it to feel cohesive. Either way Damon's voice should be on most tracks for it to feel like Gorillaz to me. But I've only listened to it twice, no judgment yet.

I love the new album. "Rhinestone Eyes" into "Stylo" works well as does "Empire Ants" into "Glitter Freeze". With so many guest artists this record could have been a disaster. But, like the other Gorillaz albums it melds many voices into a cohesive whole.

The absence of Dan the Automator and DangerMouse as producers did not reduce the quality of the music. Props to Damon Albarn for pulling it off yet again.

found this on the youtube post :

3 storylines are converging here. 1) the gorillaz are making a fast getaway from a bank heist that went wrong, that's why 2-D has a clown mask over his head, stylo is bullet-riddled and android-noodle is toting a shotgun and has a bullet in her dome-piece. they robbed the bank because murdoc is broke -- he said so in this month's Q magazine interview. and remember that murdoc is no stranger to crime...

i pretty much agree with this. there are some beats i can definitely get down to live, but absolutely nothing stood out from the new album to me whereas normally you can hear some definite singles. and anytime there was a cool beat, it didn't last. maybe i'll feel differently when i hear it live, but i'm underwhelmed.

I will most certainly be listening to this album next year. At first, some of the songs seemed rather unimpressive. Especially because I first heard the album in my buildings lounge, from crap speakers, with a bunch of people. After some more listens with some headphones, however, I have found most of the songs to be great songs, and I think there's something to like in every song. Even Bobby Womac's part in Stylo has grown on me, and I actually really love "Cloud of Unknowing." The weakest part for me might be Snoop Dogg's song, but that's just a little, fun into really.

I have little interest in the Gorillaz storylines, but they're a lot more accessible than whatever Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria are always on about.

Listening again - I agree with the standout tracks being Rhinestone and Empire Ants. Empire Ants reminds me of El Mañana a lot. Empire into Glitter is going to be insane live. I also really like White Flag, the one with the British rappers I couldn't remember yesterday. And Bobby Womack's part in Stylo makes the song, I don't know how anyone couldn't like his parts.

If you thought Demon Days was somehow mediocre I could see how you'd feel the same about this album, But to me Demon Days was one of the best of the decade and this one is sure to be top 5 for the year.

I'm listening to one of the bonus tracks now. It's just a longer version of the intro. Nothing special.

The Japanese iTunes version should have the 2 bonus tracks... Anyone have it yet? If so, pm?

Mine is almost done downloading. What.CD just has the one bonus track. The bit rate is definitely 256.

There's a legit FLAC rip, as well, out there. And that V2.

Is there any point to a FLAC rip of a webstream?

I'm sure you guys have discussed this already but how do you think the set list will look like?

I think it would be best to do 30 mins of hits. Then go into Plastic Beach in its entirety.

I think that's better than Plastic Beach first. Then playing other songs.

Plastic Beach has to come first. Encore with hits. Or maybe what the Pixies did for Doolittle, play some songs at the beginning, do the album, then four or five hits to end the show.

This.

With probably a couple of PB songs in the encore.

It's going to be as normal concert starting with the first couple of Plastic Beach songs, then an older song or two, more Plastic Beach, etc. Close with the hits.
