loved the show tonight, and for $18?! FUCK YEAH! got to scoot way up ,but even if we were in our proper seats it still would have been perfectly fine, the venue was much smaller than i envisioned. i didn't think the crowd was THAT shitty though, lots of people dancing and having a great time. i also enjoyed this show much more than coachella.

Hey general Gorillaz question: is there some sort of graphic novel out for the the storyline of this album? Or of previous albums? My kids really want to know the story.

Cerys (my duaghter) was asking me why the girl (Noodle) was being electrocuted, and I had to think for minute and remembered this Noodle is some sort of android replacement for the real Noodle, right?

aaronbk
10-29-2010, 09:59 AM
I'm pretty sure the story is open ended to the veiwer. There's alot of fan sites with a "story" put together. I could be wrong tho. But there isn't a graphic novel of any sort

The show last night was SO much fun. I'm so glad we broke down and went because it totally blew the Coachella set out of the water. As others have mentioned, I can't believe how much more engaged with the audience Damon was and it really made the show so much more enjoyable. We were in the 8th row, so even though we were in the cavernous Key Arena, it felt at times like our own little private show. Awesome.

So glad we broke down and went, especially since Damon seems to be saying that this is his last world tour with anyone, including Gorillaz, for at least 6 or 7 years. Glad I read that yesterday so that I enjoyed the show that much more to save up for a drought.

Highlights--
The always-fabulous opening (need I say more?)-- even though when I had my hands up in the air, this really awesome lady behind me shoved me, yes a hard shove, in the back twice--the first time I thought was an accident, like she fell forward or something, the 2nd time she gave my husband a shove, too, and I figured out she was indeed assaulting me on purpose, so I turned around to confront her and she proceeded to scream at me for putting my hands in the air and making it "impossible" for her to see anything onstage. What...the...fuck. These higher-priced shows really bring the crazies to the first 10 rows, I guess. I was able to get over my fury and violent rage and enjoy the show anyway, thankfully, and every time anybody on stage told us to put our hands up, I was ALL about it. ha

The chemistry between Yukimi and Damon (swoon...), Maceo Parker's appearance (fun stuff), Damon thanking Slave to the Needle (awesome Seattle tattoo parlor--got one of mine done there) for their tattoo work on the band (!)--Damon had a huge anchor tattoo on his inside forearm!!, White Flag and the welcome the audience gave to the Arab-American musicians when Damon introduced them, Dare, and the dance craze during Rhinestone Eyes.

The Vancouver show last night was amazing. So much better than Coachella it is hard to put into words. Everything about the performance was so fantastic. Hearing "19-2000," "Tomorrow Comes Today," and "Punk" was amazing. 90% of the audience looked confused as hell as to what was going on during "Punk" and I loved it. Damon went completely manic. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble also added a lot to all the songs they played on. The completed visuals for all the songs really helped too. I forget which song it was, but it was concept drawings of when real Noodle meets with Robot Noodle. I can't wait for that to be an actual video.

The absolute highlight of the show for me was Don't Get Lost In Heaven->Demon Days. That completely floored me. When the all voices kicked in on Demon Days I almost started to cry. I have only cried twice at a show before, but Demon Days damn near got me. It was such an incredible way to end the show. As oposed to Coachella, where I left with a somewhat confused look on face, I left with the biggest smile.

New Damon NME interview - tour record hopefully before Christmas
This week's edition of NME (out today) has a new interview with Damon with many interesting points, including

- he says he wants to try and put out the 'tour album', recorded during the North American tour, before Christmas
- he found out about Daley because Nelson De Freitas (voice of 2D) played him and his partner a clip of Daley doing a session, when he was round their house once, and his partner then got very interested in Daley's music.
- EMI pressured Gorillaz to release Plastic Beach by the end of the financial year 2009/2010, before they felt it was ready.
- Neneh Cherry is going to guest with Gorillaz on some Euro tourdates

NME: You're bringing Gorillaz back to the UK - did the US shows work out ok?
Damon: It was so much fun. it's very weird, I haven't played out of England in that way for

a long time - 10,12 years - and America was always a struggle with Blur, even though we had

a wonderfully loyal cult following. Writing in the language that I do, working in America is

- I have to say - a very nice novelty."

NME: A perfect day, if you're Lou Reed. Must be exciting having such a legend join your

band.
Damon: Oh yeah, Lou's become a very, er, sort of benevolent force for us now. At Madison

Square Garden the whole crowd was going 'Lou, Lou!' which sounds like 'boo, boo'

unfortunately.

NME: We don't imagine he's the kind of guy who would find that funny.
Damon: He's up for it. Everyone gets on really well, which is ridiculous realy, if you think

about the logistics. Lou Reed and Kano and Bashy and Bobby Womack all hanging out together.

And Mark E Smith and Neneh Cherry are going to do some European dates.

NME: Where did you find Daley, who sings on new single 'Doncamatic (All Played Out)'?
Damon: My missus go onto him 'cos our mate Nelson was round our house one evening and played

us a YouTube clip of Daley doing a session, and he was just so cool. I think he's a bit of a

star in the making. Not to sound too Simon Cowell.

NME: That song's out this month, but 'Stylo' is still the signature tune for Gorillaz 2010,

isn't it?
Damon: That is a legitimate radio song but EMI made us release it before we were ready,

because they wanted it to be in the last financial quarter or something. It didn't sound

like anything else on the radio so it didn't get played.

NME: Are Gorillaz sitting on a big stash of new material?
Damon: I've been recording a new record on the road, which I'm going to try and put out

before Christmas. It's a studio album made in hotel rooms across Ameirca.

NME: How is it possible to capture the distinctive Gorillaz sound in a hotel room?
Damon: I've made it on an ipad - I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad. Which is

ironic, being the sort of technophobe and Luddite that I am. But I fell in love with my iPad

as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record.

NME: So is it more Gorillaz-y or more Blur-y? What does it sound like?
DAmon: It's probably more American-sounding than Blur. It sounds like an English voice that

has been put through the vocoder of America.

NME: But when you're writing these new songs, do some of them feel like Blur songs?
Damon: I've got a lot of songs that will always only be comfortable in the context of Blur

because they belong to that part of my heart and my life. But as for a new album, I have

very strong loyalties to my past and I don't believe you should do something just because

there's a demand for it.

NME: What can we expect from you in 2011 - another opera?
Damon: I'm doing something next year about a subject that's really close to my heart.

NME: Which is..?
Damon: No, I'm not telling you what it is.

A surreal evening of music and visuals had the locals captivated: female violinists from the Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music, decked out in sailor hats and swaying to a hip-hop beat, were accompanied by background footage of Bruce Willis shooting at Murdoc. The haunting duo of Bobby Womack and Damon Albarn made it less like a concert and more of an experience for the Syrian audience, who perhaps didn't know regular concerts are not supposed to be this diverse..

the olympics thing is all over the internet now. there is no detail other than that Damon and Jamie are involved.

Phoner to Arizona video: Directed by Jamie Hewlett; Co-directed and Edited by Seb Monk; Additional photography supplied by Mike Smith and Oswald Lee Henderson.
From Montreal to Vancouver via Seattle, Texas and Toronto, over 31 days on their North American Tour this autumn, Gorillaz recorded a musical diary. The result is a collection of 15 tracks, some with vocals, some without, some combined performances and some solo.

The 15 track sonic journal, titled The Fall, produced by Gorillaz and Stephen Sedgwick, will be available to download for free by Sub Division fan club members on Christmas Day and will also be streamed on Gorillaz.com from Christmas Day.

The music was recorded during spare time while on the road. "I did it because there's a lot of time that you just spend staring at walls essentially. And it was a fantastic way of doing it" says Damon Albarn. "I found working in the day, whether it's in the hotel or in the venue, it was a brilliant way of keeping myself well." Adding that the collection is "..like a diary, I literally wrote everything on the day in each place and there's a strange sort of sound of America and its musical traditions that comes through. It feels like a journey through America."

A physical release is planned for later in 2011

Definitely enjoying this album more than this Laker game. I think Revolving doors is my favorite, along with the Womack track. It has the same sort of dreamy quality as Animal Collective's autumn-themed EP from last year.

So, I need to listen to this more. On first listen, I liked it, but I don't think I can say that it's incredible or mind-blowing like some of you have. "Aspen Forest" was my favorite track, but I wish that it had some vocals in it. "Revolving Doors" is pretty cool. I forgot the other tracks already, but like I said, I just did one listen. Plastic Beach got better and better for me with each listen, so maybe this will be the same.

it is really much more like a demo cd than an album. I wouldn't call it anywhere near incredible, or expect plastic beach like growth, but there are some cool ideas throughout.

loved it. gave it quite a few listens. i think albarn really got what he was going for. pretty cool to think of how it was made on the road while your listening to it. it really is a journal about america

Someone who isn't a total Gorillaz fellator, please tell us how the album actually is. Note: it sucks or it's incredible is not telling us anything worthwhile. I want to know why it sucks or why it's incredible.

It's better than I thought it would be. Call me crazy, but I can see some of these beats being dropped in a early day Sahara set.

Worth checking out.

I'm going through the new album for the first time today. So far so good. I'd only read about it coming out yesterday.

Just a little anecdote: last night I was listening to the last Massive Attack album in the car with my kids, and my daughter recognized Damon Albarn's voice in "Saturday Comes Slow," and she wistfully asked, "Is there a new Gorillaz album out soon?" And I remembered, hey, YES there is! My kids are all excited now. I just need to actually download it instead of streaming through youtube.

agreed...

FInaly sat down and listened this morning, 'Revolving Doors' shines brightest. Its interesting to listen to Damons interpretation of North America on the road.

That is silliness. Is Damon really going to take Blur on the international festival circuit this year? I will remain skeptical.

Calling the album a demo doesnt seem accurate enough for me. I really enjoy the way the songs flow together and sure it is basic but it feels oddly complete imo. I fucking love the origin of the album and what its all about.

If he intended it to be consumed as demos he woulda called it a demos album. He's calling it an album, so we should too.
