I like the version of Stylo on the website much more.

Also, does anyone else still get excited everytime they realize Gorillaz are actually headlining? Just seeing their website say "We're playing Coachella" made me all giddy.

Now that I am looking back at this allegedly official tracklist, there is no Barry Gibb, Horrors, or Lou Reed. This is surprising. Those are some major cuts.

And the album version of Stylo is far superior to the radio edit.

lou reed is on track 9.

the horrors may end up on a b-side or two. I'm surprised at the lack of gibb mention too.

MESSAGE FROM MURDOC: WE'RE BA-ACK!!

Ahoy mateys! The new Gorillaz album is almost ready and it's good. Really good. The best. B.E.S.T. A-Mazing. We'll be taking it out for a spin later this year, when the Gorillaz wagon train will roll in to California to headline The Coachella Festival on Sunday 18 April.

This will be the greatest show on earth! Remember Harlem Apollo? Remember Manchester Opera House? No, me neither.

That's why I strongly recommend a visit to Coachella. Good golfing there, too. Tickets go on sale this Friday, 10am PST / 4am GMT through Ticketmaster.com; pack sandwiches and form an orderly virtual queue. There will be fan ticket allocations via gorillaz.com, check back for further details.
Murdoc

In other news, I've developed a device called a 'twitter' which allows you to actually see the inside of my brain! Phenomenal. You can enter the wormhole here on twitter.

Our teeny tiny designer drones have been hard at work ahead of Phase 3, sprucing up the Niccals online empire. Check it out: gorillaz.com, youtube, myspace, bebo and facebook.

Also, listen to my first Point Nemo FM broadcast, available on gorillaz.com now, plenty more of these to come...

Over and out!

I am under the impression it is going to be a new stage set up based around the new album's visual style. The only official statement made about it so far is this:

Gorillaz puts on a highly sophisticated virtual reality multi-media show.

http://www.mydesert.com/article/20100119/EVENTS17/100111044/2010-Coachella-lineup-announced-Jay-Z-Muse-Gorillaz-to-headline

Based on that short description, I don't think it will be very similar to anything they have done before.

rage patton

Damon also said in an interview "it is getting more and more expensive to put on a Gorillaz show." Im guessing GV are putting a whole ton of money into this Gorillaz show and Damon is constructing his dream set. Much like Daft Punk in 2006.

that's what i was hoping too. it'd be awesome to have some huge setup for this show.

i'm thinkin de la soul will take care of most of the "hip hop" pieces, womack will probably be there and possibly lou reed, though i doubt it. lou reed not committing to tour dates is the whole reason they haven't announced a tour yet.

and actually, perhaps snoop won't be added, but will be a jayz guest and there for gorillaz too?

I did. I find it marginally better because it is complete, but essentially it's the same thing.

BlackSwan
01-21-2010, 03:34 PM
Pretty much. It may be the headphones or my broken ears, but it seems like some of the extra electronics in that version are missing from the radio edit. Either way, I've started to enjoy Womack's part more and more, so it doesn't bother me anymore.

hawkingvsreeve
01-21-2010, 03:37 PM
It's grown on me very slightly, mainly because I know it's coming. It's just so self indulgent. Whatever.

I was thinking, what songs will Jay throw in like Glasto when he played A Billi and Rehab...and the I Wanna Rock (Remix) came to mind...this is their only collab so it is a definite possibility if Snoop is gonna be there for Gorillaz...Jay is gonna pull out all of the stops for his show...

GORILLAZ

"Plastic Beach will be the last Gorillaz album ever released. You've heard it from me...direct." - Murdoc Niccals

So says Gorillaz' bass player in Q's world exclusive feature on the star-studded return of Britain's favourite animated heroes. Featuring new artwork by Jamie Hewlett, behind-the scenes photos plus interviews and quotes from Damon Albarn's many collaborators and, of course, a unique look into life on "the most deserted spot on the planet".

Damn it. Hopefully, that is a joke.

Another pirate radio broadcast is coming tomorrow:

From the Murdoc Twitter:

I think it’s time to go cosh the NME radio again. And maybe AOL too! Flicking through the playlist on my underwater iPod as we speak

Its on! New broadcast of my Plastic Beach Lighthouse Rrrradio show coming tomorrow! And Ive chosen a couple of platinum cuts from the album!

A Belgian newspaper is also alleging that Murdoc revealed there would be a Gorillaz tour at a Plastic Beach exhibition. Here is the fill translation from gorillaz-unofficial:

In the lair of Gorillaz

On March 8 the highly anticipated third album of Gorillaz is released. We have exclusively heard it and visited their Plastic Beach in London. The group’s previous two albums sold 12 million copies between them.

LONDON, FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

This feels like a thriller novel. A meeting at Fleur de Lis Street ( unspecified number!) in east London. The neighborhood is becoming a trendy East Village for artists, but in a murky alley straight out of a Dickens novel, you’re more impressed by the yellow brick warehouses, blackened by time, condemned doors and windows.

There a representative from EMI London awaits us. He does not know himself where the place chosen by the management of Gorillaz for an original display, a one-week installation in a warehouse converted in studio pictures. We are the first to visit the place. A phone call and a few seconds later a metallic red door miraculously opens. Before you even know what is going on, a body search with metal detector is organized. It is prohibited to enter with a mobile phone, camera or other digital instrument. This is a duty for us in order to pass from the real world to the virtual world of Gorillaz.

To welcome us, a room with a large screen and new paintings on the walls by Jamie Hewlett, the designer of all the images of the group consisting of cartoon characters, including "2D", aka Damon Albarn (read MAD next Wednesday's interview with "3D", Massive Attack, which reveals where does the nickname "2D"comes from ). On the paintings, we find "2D", the Japanese guitarist Noodle, the bassist Murdoc Niccals and drummer Russel Hobbs. But also Lou Reed eating cable-shaped pasta.

Gorillaz, of which we had no news since the last concert at the Apollo in Harlem, April 6, 2006, are back. And the event is of a size in keeping with the fact that they have twice sold 6 million albums worldwide (Gorillaz in 2000 [sic] and Demon days in 2005).

Gorillaz invented the concept of virtual group (remember its first performance at the MTV Europe Music Awards, where musicians were hidden behind a screen on which were playing animated characters). Musically, they have also invented a platform based on cooperation. Rap, electro, rock, soul, pop, symphonic ... Everything is good for this explosive cocktail like no other.

First observation on Gorillaz’ third opus: Murdoc took control over everything concerning the concept of Plastic Beach and left in 2D’s care the musical aspect. In the making of the album which is showed to us , it is Murdoc, our host, who invites us to join him on the beach of plastic located in the Pacific Ocean (Location: 48 º 52'36''S, 123 ° 23'36 "W). He tells us that after the Apocalypse, the group went to take refuge on this island that looks like a rock

Before exploring this beach, we see thirteen 3D teasers and the animated storyboard for "Stylo", the first single released on the Gorillaz website. A song that’s at first innocuous but quickly infiltrates the mind like an insidious drug. Mos Def and Bobby Womack are the singers and on our website (lesoir.be / frontstage), we can hear the instrumental remix.

After all that, we can finally see what is hidden behind the long black curtains: the famous model of Plastic Beach, three metres high.

It is made of recyclable materials; all that is natural has disappeared from this world where the earth is pink, the trees orange and the grass a strange green. We can go around the model that can light up at night. We are then provided headphones with the MP3 album so that we can listen by strolling around the island.

The disc, consisting of sixteen tracks, opens with a symphonic intro. We remember that Damon has previously composed all the music of Chinese opera Monkey: Journey to the West. We then go to "Welcome to the world of the plastic beach" with Snoop Dogg and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble of Chicago. Another rapper (English Kano) does the same with the National Orchestra for Arabic Music, on the following title, "White flag".

-Lou Reed and Bobby Womack

It is wholeheartedly in the musical world of Gorillaz, that of all crossings, all mixings. De La Soul returns with Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals in "Superfast jellyfish. Little Dragon, the Swedish electro-soul combo led by singer Yukimi Nagano, operates on two tracks, like Bobby Womack, the legendary soul out of forgetfulness or the rapper Mos Def. In addition to Lou Reed on the venomous "Some kind of nature, we also find Mark E. Smith of The Fall ( "Glitter freeze") and, on the eponymous track , Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, their first meeting since the separation of The Clash.

The album is full of strong titles, able to become singles. The trend is very pop and Albarn is very present. The synths are from the '80s but also from the seventies with a touch of "Popcorn" and bubble gum.

If Murdoc claims to have replaced Russel on the drums, 2D retains control over all stuffed like rap and symphonic beats of electro, soul and pop harmonies. "Broken" and "To Binge" are real pop lollipops.

The set is fragmented and coherent, dense and majestic, light and fresh. Gorillaz equals here its first two opus of legend. The only problem is that Murdoc announces it as the last in a triptych, and therefore, Gorillaz, and after that the announced tour, it's over. The loss would obviously be enormous, since Gorillaz managed to move all genres, all codes. Its success also comes from his unique way of communicating. Its website, which will be completely redone February 22, and which we were able see a preview, is organized as a video game. As was been the case with the first DVD of the group.

With his «Plastic Novo Band",Damon Albarn has become the most exciting creator of the past decade. His various projects (Blur, Mali Music, Africa Express, The Good The Bad & The Queen, numerous shots of thumb given to forgotten soul men ...) earned him to be frequently cited in the traditional balance of the 2000s.

With Plastic Beach, he goes even further in the analysis of a troubled world that, fortunately, he managed to cheer with his music.

I was looking at this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_New_Here) link and noticed Damon Albarn is on the keyboard for the new Gil Scott-Heron album. Does this mean that he could play with Gil Scott-Heron on friday? It would have been more likely if he wasn't moved, however.

So, which Damon Albarn is going to turn up here, then? Will it be the extroverted frontman of Blur who strolled onto a sun-drenched stage in Hyde Park beckoning the masses in July 2009, or the side-stage dwelling, limelight-shunning organiser behind Africa Express’ jaw-dropping Paris show a month later? Well, a bit of both and neither, really. Little over six months after he was playing ‘Country House’, Albarn turns his attention towards the conceptual, genre-leaping futuregroove of Gorillaz with gloriously stunning results – third album ‘Plastic Beach’ is a flawlessly executed neo-pop masterpiece.
As with all of Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s work so far, there’s more going on here than just the music – the story of the world’s most successful virtual band now arriving at Point Nemo, where bassist Murdoc Niccals has set up Gorillaz HQ atop a floating trash island in the South Pacific, where he’s keeping singer 2D hostage and has built a cyborg version of guitarist Noodle (head online to check out the trailer that swirls around Hewlett’s monstrous, monumental Plastic Beach installation) - but the sheer strength of the songs demand they hog the attention.
Celebrity voyeurism and rampant consumerism are recurring themes throughout, Gorillaz’ reaction to the X Factor (de)generation an album of blistering-yet-melancholic, indelible-yet-throwaway pop songs – no-one quite does contrary-pop like Gorillaz.
The short, lush swirl of ‘Orchestral Intro’ precedes the industrial groove of ‘Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach’, Snoop Dogg’s menacing drawl taking centrestage as Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s horns hover around a cool-as-fuck bass-glide behind him, next grime heroes Kano and Bashy spar over The National Orchestra For Arabic Music, themselves putting up a fight against a cascading wave of beats, whilst Damon comes out from behind the limelight to bask in it on ‘Rhinestone Eyes’. It’s relentlessly brilliant, all the more so for the way it effortlessly glues together its guest stars – all is one, it seems, in the murky world of Gorillaz.
Highlights continue to come thick’n’fast; Mark E.Smith’s psychohollers punctuate the middle of ‘Glitter Freezes’’ sonicstrobes and Gruff Rhys steals the show from De La Soul on the psychedelic surge of ‘Superfast Jellyfish’. The symphonic soulfulness with which Bobby Womack croons over penultimate track ‘Cloud Of Unknowing’, meanwhile, guides ‘Plastic Beach’ towards its finishing point with a poignant, prurient sadness.
A seamless coming together of artists, cultures and themes on a record by a band that doesn’t even exist; on ‘Plastic Beach’, Damon Albarn’s Midas touch is bordering on genius. Git.

i dunno Daft Punk didn't conflict with DM, Madonna didn't conflict with Tool, Faithless didn't conflict with Bjork, The Rapture didn't conflict with RHCP, Happy Mondays didn't conflict with RATM, Fatboy Slim conflicted with Jack Johnson but nobody cared, Sasha and Digweed had a 10 minute overlap with Prince, Justice didn't conflict with Roger Waters, Girl Talk didn't conflict with Macca, Chemical Brothers overlapped The Killers for 30 minutes, The Cube conflicted with The Cure.

I'd say based on Coachella history the top billed Sahara act doesn't conflict with the headliner and the only times it has is when somebody has been given an unusually long set time (ignoring Jack Johnson) i.e. The Cure, Sasha and Digweed, and The Chemical Brothers.

It is also possible Orbital play before Gorillaz and end the same time Gorillaz start. Say Gorillaz start at 10:30. Orbital could play 9-10:30. Or perhaps, Orbital will be schedule 9-10:20... giving everyone 10 minutes to get to Gorillaz.

Remember in 09 where everyone thought Sunday was going to be a disaster in terms of conflicts? I understand camping out for The Gorillaz about as much as I understand camping out for Daft Punk. Its going to be a huge visual show that you aren't going to need to be on the rail for.

Considering the mainstage will probably go Thom Yorke->Pavement->Gorillaz (or possibly Pavement->Thom Yorke-> Gorillaz), I think a lot of people will be camping out.

Somewhere in the middle to a tad in front of the middle for both is fine.

Why would I not want a good view of something that will supposedly be visual stunning?

You didn't go to NIN's Lights in the Sky tour, did you?

Same principle applies, to be back a bit is better than looking up the nostrils of the performers. You'll get much more out of the visuals.

Truth is we have no idea what their stage show will look like. I never said I was railing it for Gorillaz anyway.

These are my thoughts too. And good view doesn't necessarily mean first rail. I was actually thinking of camping at the second rail, it was perfect for KraftPortisPrince.

you dont need to camp to get second rail. I had to run to the bathroom between MBV and The Cure and I was able to get second rail easily.

Yeah it definitely depends, sometimes you do have to camp for second rail and sometimes it's really easy to come and go. You just gotta judge when you're there. That said, I am more than happy with the idea of seeing York/Pavement/Gorillaz in one spot with out leaving. If i get to see Orbital/Plastikman/Sly Stone/Jonsi it's just icing on the cake.

I am now officially conflicted about going to Coachella.

WTF is wrong with you?

Their first show back in how many years? Not only are they playing the best festival in the country but theyre headlining it/closing it out? On top of the fact that they will be debuting whatever new stage show they have.

I dont understand what else you need

i dunno Daft Punk didn't conflict with DM, Madonna didn't conflict with Tool, Faithless didn't conflict with Bjork, The Rapture didn't conflict with RHCP, Happy Mondays didn't conflict with RATM, Fatboy Slim conflicted with Jack Johnson but nobody cared, Sasha and Digweed had a 10 minute overlap with Prince, Justice didn't conflict with Roger Waters, Girl Talk didn't conflict with Macca, Chemical Brothers overlapped The Killers for 30 minutes, The Cube conflicted with The Cure.

I think it's odd how nobody ever mentions the best example. radiohead & kraftwerk in 2004 actually had 10 minutes gap between them. radiohead ended at 10.30, kraftwerk began at 10.40.

also I think the last 30 minutes or so of DM did overlap with Daft Punk.

I think this was the biggest mass of people racing from the mainstage-->sahara during the last ~20 minutes of DM.
