You guys make a lot of assumptions. Damon has never said "I reached out to Del and he said no."

he seems to have reached out to every other collaborator possible. why would he invite everyone but not ask Del?

Gorillaz at the Bowl would suck; I'm hoping for the Forum or (if they could somehow get away with such small venues) the Fonda or El Rey.

Even the Greek would be better than the Bowl; the Bowl is way too quiet for a Gorillaz show.

They also really need to add "Don't Get Lost In Heaven/Demon Days" back into their setlists.

I agree. Smaller venues feel much more intimate. Acoustics work better too. And my favorite part of the Demon Days NY/UK performances are the end with Dont Get Lost.../Demon Days. It's such a pivotal happy moment. So uplifting. Fuck I love it.

Ever done... Period.

Speaking of this...XMU has been having a resurgence of BLUR songs. It makes me beg the question... Do we think a reunite could be happening? They did similar things with Pavement before any announcements.

I don't really see Del turning it down, and I haven't seen any quotes that indicate he turned an opportunity down. In that video I think he's saying he never asked Damon if he could perform it, right?

I know Del hasn't been invited to play Outside Lands, which is his across the bridge from his house.

of course it's possible that damon has never asked, but I just don't see him asking every colaborator but one if they can show up.

it's not clear what Del is saying in the video, but "I mean if I asked or something, or cooperated when they wanted to go on the road..." suggests to me that it's his own choices that have kept him away.

Oh yeah I forgot about that little clause. He's really a punk if he refuses that kind of touring. What is he in the business for? Either way, touring or no touring, he better come to OSL if they headline.

Getting your hopes up for Del is silly... I'll be happy if we at least get all of the guests from London. Hoping for new songs in the setlist is silly too. We'll be lucky if we get any songs they haven't already played at Coachella or the Roundhouse gigs.

So from poking around, what i can is that Roses Gabor = Rosie Wilson. When "Dare" was recorded Rosie Wilson was an unknown session singer. Since then she has broken out to try her own career, and I guess chose Roses Gabor as her performing name. There's not a lot of info out there, but I was putting pieces together. Here's her blog.

ummm, I'd say that treasure island is way less likely because its much smaller. NSSN had Muse headline this year while treasure island had MGMT one day and Flaming Lips another, both much smaller acts than Muse, and equally smaller than Gorillaz

From unofficial:

Mark E. Smith comments about working with Gorillaz
There's an interview with Mark E. Smith, guest star on Gorillaz' track Glitter Freeze in the current issue (issue 50, Julian Casablancas cover) of the UK magazine Clash. Here is the Gorillaz extract:-

Outside of The Fall, you've just guested on the new Gorillaz album 'Plastic Beach'...

Yeah. I never related it to Blur. They just kept asking me and I was like 'I don't wanna do it,' then I thought 'Well, maybe they need some help.' I actually thought Gorillaz were some kiddie rap, like helping out Dizzee Rascal or something. I didn't realise it's a big thing, so I arrive at the studio limping, [Mark was recovering from a leg injury at the time], and...

...Damon Albarn was there?

Yeah. I walk in and there's all the stars of the universe there, people you're supposed to know. Domino [his record label] were crying, like, 'You've worked with Damon Albarn'. It's a very southern thing. Where I live in Manchester, Gorillaz mean jack shit, honestly. But down there Blur are like gods aren't they? It's alien to me.

Were you more of a fan of your fellow Lancastrians Oasis, then?

Yeah. Blur were doing a nancy Oasis thing. They were shite. My lads [in the band] are like, 'Who the fuck's Blur? Who the fuck's Oasis?' That's why I adore them. They're more into Motorhead. I think that's the best way.

To add further confirmation to the fact that Gorillaz will be coming to the US, there is a contest in the new NME to win a trip to see Gorillaz in the US.

BlackSwan
05-12-2010, 02:05 PM
And here we go...

NME interviews Damon.

NME: You made us think Blur were finished, then you released 'Fool's Day' for Record Store Day. what happened?

Damon: It was nice to know it made a difference. I heard Rough Trade in Brick Lane usually makes £6,000 on a Saturday and it made £60,000 on that Saturday. That's why I thought I' take a big risk and go back in the studio, but it was great.

NME: Having taken a risk, how do you feel about Blur now?

Damon: I'm definitely going to do a few more of those seven-inches and at some point in the undetermined future there will be a record at the end of it. I love the no-pressure aspect. Just going in the studio and recording in a day is something we haven't done since the B-sides in the early days. We can't do it all the time, so I don't want anyone to think there's an album ocming soon. It's not possible - but we've got songs!

NME: After the Gorillaz' live gigs, there's a world tour. How does it feel playing those songs onstage rather than using holograms or being behind a screen?

Damon: We did the holograms at the Grammmys, but you can't do them live because you can't have any volume, the bass vibrates and the image disperses. There's some cutting-edge technology that, fingers crossed, by the time we reach that tour in the autumn we might be able to utilise to have the characters onstage next to the musicians, which will be amazing.

NME: Does seeing the audience help?

Damon: We can't really deviate. It's like Just A Minute. 'No deviations, hesitations or repetition'. Well, there's a lot of repetition, it's pop music [laughs]. But there's rooom for a small amount of magic. It's very disciplined, but for an audience that's irrelevant. They don't care about the technical aspects. It's whether it's working.

NME: Now you've played several shows, how are all the guest musicians finding it? Is everyone happy to share the spotlight?

Damon: Everyone is tuned into it. Everyone is on the same vibration. There's a lot of spiritually minded people involved in it now. Bobby [Womack], Mos [Def], that's very much how they work, so it's moved on to a new level. You know The Last Waltz [Martin Scorese's 1978 documentary about The Band's last tour] - all those bands together? It's a bit like that. Especially when we start touring the world in autumn.

NME: In the Blur film No Distance Left To Run you admitted that it took you a long time to realise that music wasn't about competition. Is Gorillaz the embodiment of that?

Damon: In many ways it is. You can't worry about who is getting the most attention, it's not like that. It's werid, it has none of those connotations. We don't really know what we're going., but I don't think we're totally making it up as we're going along. You have to focus on the fact that it's a very fast-paced, crazy event.

NME: With the world tour, it's been hinted that you'll be playing 'Plastic Beach' in full...

Damon: [B]We were advised againt playing 'Plastic Beach' at Coachella, but it went as well, if not better, than anything else. The audience felt like our audience.

NME: Finally, with the Gorillaz tour, the opera you and Jamie Hewlett are working on and now more Blur singls, how do you fit it all in? When do you sleep?

Damon: [laughs] when everyone else sleeps. It's just good time-management.

[Boxout in the article] Who is Murdoc? Gorillaz' cartoon frontman Tweets away and has appeared on NME radio - but is it actually Damon pretending to be the character?

"Murdoc is one of us, everything is written by one of us," explains Damon, "but [the person] should remain nameless. It's not me though! I have not the time or inclination to live inside someone else's head." That's a 'no' then...

Even excepting the volcano the show wouldnt have been that spectacular but there are already many threads debating that back and forth.

The only reason I even posted in here is because of those 2 new facets.

A. The fully character video even tho they have, ya know, obvs graduated past all that and are really just a band with some guys in it which is why the Coachella show was less cohesive than the Demon Days shows from a half decade ago. Tho I guess we will see at Glasto and the upcoming fall tour if what happened at Coachella was drab and unimaginative by design, a huge fumble, or the band purposely using a crown jewel slot as a rehearsal gig.

B. Shooters post about the performance turning people OFF the record, which actually HAS happened regardless of whether you enjoyed the performance or not. And its happened to more than a few people. You can try to insulate your opinion with "you just dont like good music" as much as you want but I defy you to name another live set that killed peoples enjoyment of a record they previously liked.

I don't know who you have been talking to, but nobody I know besides some people on these boards have been turned off by the album after their performance. Obviously it was a polarizing performance. Personally I thought it was quite good, but nothing spectacular or mind-blowing. But I don't really understand how that performance could have turned anybody off the album.

its pretty sad that you let that performance ruin this album for you. i dont really understand why either. i didnt like the way they ended the set, but i thought they put together a great performance up until the last song, which was kind of a downer. this album is pure gold though, every couple weeks i find a new appreciation for a different song on there. i feel sorry for you that you are stopping yourself from doing the same.

No its not a weak answer.

People enjoyed the record.

The performance happened. People were let down.

The appetite to listen to the record again was gone.

It happened.

Where your opinion fits in here is that you get to disagree with its effect on YOU. That it happened to other people isnt subjective. It's a real thing. "Be able to back it up"? Are you 14 or something?

This shit aint math and your thinking that you can prove one way or other that people should feel differently than their natural reactions is laughable.

The story is that this performance had this effect and that is very unusual. It doesnt get changed because you disagree on whether it should have.

BlackSwan
06-14-2010, 03:48 PM

handbanana, since you refuse to give any real explanation for why you were let down, i can only guess. and this is what it sounds like to me:

your expectations for this show were so high (like most others) that it was almost impossible for the band to meet them. you probably hoped for some insane light show, and when you didnt get it, you felt cheated. not only that, they ended coachella on a downer, which pissed you off even more and it made you so bitter that you didnt even want to listen to their album anymore. i totally understand being upset about those 2 points, since i was a bit myself. however what you are failing to realize is neither of those things has to do with the actual music they were playing, or the album itself. thats the point with the new gorillaz, its supposed to me more about the music and less about the other BS. and you are letting that other BS take away from how musically great a performance they put on, especially considering the volcano threw a wrench in their set. i think if you actually separated these 2 things, you might once again have an appetite for this amazing album.

or i could be way off base...anyway, i should get back to work. hope you open your mind cuz you are missin out.

do they do shows that late in the year at those outdoor venues? can't recall when they usually cut them off.

It never occurred to me that they would cut them off in Southern CA. Huh.

handbanana, since you refuse to give any real explanation for why you were let down, i can only guess. and this is what it sounds like to me:

your expectations for this show were so high (like most others) that it was almost impossible for the band to meet them. you probably hoped for some insane light show, and when you didnt get it, you felt cheated. not only that, they ended coachella on a downer, which pissed you off even more and it made you so bitter that you didnt even want to listen to their album anymore. i totally understand being upset about those 2 points, since i was a bit myself. however what you are failing to realize is neither of those things has to do with the actual music they were playing, or the album itself. thats the point with the new gorillaz, its supposed to me more about the music and less about the other BS. and you are letting that other BS take away from how musically great a performance they put on, especially considering the volcano threw a wrench in their set. i think if you actually separated these 2 things, you might once again have an appetite for this amazing album.

or i could be way off base...anyway, i should get back to work. hope you open your mind cuz you are missin out.

To be fair the Gorillaz placed all the hype on themselves. The band had people believe they were going to do a very elaborate thing. Didn't happen. Disappointing maybe but it's not like that performance sounded like shit. So I don't see how that could change someone’s high opinion of Plastic Beach. You guys just cry too much.

I don't know about that. What'd he say? "This is going to be real special" like he always says about his questioned headliners. We all read that interview with Murdoc or whoever the hell that Gorilla is. He was hyping the shitty out of their Coachella set days before the show. People were already interested out of pure curiosity. This just put everything into a swirl.

Loved the ending of "Melancholy Hill." Still my favorite song off the album. My mom was even digging it the other day.

I know all about it. I even posted it in this thread...

A tiny quote that gives a hint of what is in store for the Gorillaz set (Thx for making me notice this Marco):

Gorillaz puts on a highly sophisticated virtual reality multi-media show.

The link no longer exists. Paul's covering his tracks. But srsly. That above quote is nothing more than Paul stating facts about the band. That's what they did up to this point. I'm not trying to argue. I just think that the Gorillaz were the responsible party for the hype leading into their Coachella performance.

i agree. murdoc's little blog was what did it for me. i dont really keep track of their cartoon personas so i didnt know that he is known for exaggerating. wish one of you fanboys would have told me that beforehand. i still enjoyed the show and love the album though.

I'm not trying to argue either, but I disagree. I think the responsible parties are the people who believed the sensationalist ramblings of a cartoon. I mean, Murdoc said they would play all three Gorillaz albums in a row and the performance would change the course of musical history forever. That is just crazy bullshit.

All 3 albums played back to back would have taken 2.5 hours. There's nothing crazy about that. That's how long REAL headliners play for.

And when all of their rehearsal shows were 1 1/2 hours, you expected them to play for 2 1/2 hours? You are stupid.
