I was thinking the exact same thing. I actually don't like Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt." I don't care what it means or what he was feeling at the time, I just simply don't like how it sounds. He sounds too much like a quivering old man for my liking. That opinion seems to be blasphemous among music fans.

It's the fact that he's trying to do an impression that makes it extra terrible. He should have just sun git like Bono.
Edit - oh Christ. I hadn't listened to this whole thing before I made my reply. This is just bad.
There was a slightly better video of it floating around that was a little more forgiving, but yes, it's awful.
Five Years notwithstanding (athankyou Gonsh), I don't think Arcade Fire cover other bands well. There's always like four or five people surplus to the song's requirements, and they always sound like they rushed it. They do a fantastic cover of Poupée Du Cire, but I will buy Malcolm a frozen lemonade for every non-European who's ever heard of it. I love their versions of Maps and Naive Melody, but neither approach the originals. The only song they ever covered that I did and do still prefer to listen to than the original is Age of Consent.
Works both ways though, they're a tough band to cover too. Foo Fighters took great pride in making a horrible arse of Keep The Car Running and Norah Jones (!?) boring'ed the hell out of Ocean of Noise.
The only band to ever cover them with awesome success was Calexico, who's Ocean of Noise is gorgeous, misremembered nonsensical lyrics and all.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I saw them play it in London. By then the rest of the band had it down tight - Richard was really fucking on - but yeah, Win's voice was falling apart and he just couldn't do it justice. Which is doubly unfortunate, given that he's the big Smiths fan in the family in the first place.
They were mainly covering it for the benefit of Manchester, far as I know, but they give the distinct impression that they just don't quite invest as much in other people's songs as they do their own.
So I'll just offer Age of Consent, which I think they do beautifully.

Two of my favorite covers have to be Muse's take on Frankie Valli 's "Can't Take My Eyes off You" and Franz Ferdinand's take on Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For." Brilliant (in my opinion)!
I also do like a few other covers that FF has done as well, like The Beatles' "It Won't Be Long" (if you don't mind them putting their own spin) and Britney's "Womanizer". Kaiser Chiefs have a pretty good rendition of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" as well.

not sure if this necessarily qualifies as "really f*cking good," but when I saw them perform a cover of the Eurythmics 'Here Comes the Rain Again' it was a cover that stuck with me. I think I saw them perform the song either at the Glass House in 2003 or at the El Rey in 2001. Couldn't find a setlist for either, but I will guess it was the El Rey show. BECAUSE THE NIGHT
Springsteen (co-author)
Patti Smith (co-author)
Rhythms Del Mundo feat. KT Tunstall
This is interesting. Things come full circle.
Springsteen wrote BTN while working on Darkness on the Edge of Town. He was working it up in the studio with the E Street band as a sort of Latin dance number, but decided he couldn't make it work. Patti Smith was in the studio next door working on Easter, and Springsteen gave her the song (or Smith stole it, there are conflicting stories). Smith rewrote some of the lyrics and the Patti Smith Group worked up the rock arrangement that made the song famous. Springsteen has always used Smith's arrangement when he plays the song live.
And now here's Tunstall's Latin(ish) cover.

I heard a version "No One Knows I'm Gone" that was very slow and extremely noisy. There was some cool white noise in the back of the mix like trains releasing steam and other staticky refuse. It was pretty cool, but vastly different than the original. I agree though, considering how many people cover him, it's amazing no one has done a good faithful rendition of one of his songs.

really can't put into words how buttfuckingly good this cover is. for an instrumental track, its just drenched in emotion and tinged with the sadness that accompanies the thought of two wonderful musicians that left this earth much sooner than they deserved.
and i guess while we're on the subject, the Hendrix cover of "All Along the Watchtower" pretty much shits on most other covers as well.
