from pitchfork:

The Flaming Lips to Drop Double LP

While we eagerly anticipate the Flaming Lips' headlining set at this year's Pitchfork Music Festival-- which will include fan requests!-- the guys are wrapping up their brand new album. It might be called Embryonic, according to a Stereogum report. And now Billboard tells us that the late summer release will be the Oklahoma band's first double LP.

"Our past couple of records we've always had this little dilemma, like how many songs do you put on? How many instruments do you put on? What's the focus? And some of my favorite records-- thinking Beatles White Album, Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti and even some of the longer things that the Clash have done-- part of the reason I like them is that they're not focused. They're kind of like a free-for-all and go everywhere." Wayne Coyne told Billboard, before expounding on the record's "freak-out" vibe.

Song titles include "Convinced of the Hex" and "I Don't Understand Karma".

Fuck yes. I can see them on August 15th twenty mins away for like $7. And then after I move on the 16th, I can do the 17th and 18th shows. Seems perfect.

That's what I thought about Gnarls Barkly last year at Del Mar. I ended up spending about $150 including gambling and drinking.

It has nothing to do with what he said....it has to do with the sound coming out of their instruments....and the thought of a whole double album of potential crap? Ugh...

At War with the Mystics was good and that cover of Borderline was as good as anything they've done. I wouldn't expect Soft Bulletin but I think it'll be pretty good.

I searched through all the presale password sites, and came up with nothing. My first attempt if I don't find out ahead of time will be EMBRYONIC for sure.

Not that it'll be the same but just fyi the Red Rocks presale password was FLAMING and the Washington one was STG.

I'd bet between tonight and tomorrow morning we'll have a password though.

Oh, and is that the Embryonic album art? ^

The first thing I thought of when glancing at it was the process of something being born and a birth canal.

Everytime I think of The Flaming Lips, I think of the 5 dollar tickets for the bowl show a couple of years ago. Totally forgot about the concert and did not realize it until like 9:30 on the night of the concert. It may be worth trekking down to San Diego and smell the horseshit.

If I don't find out what the password is, I'm gonna guess embryonic and flaming too

They're playing a pretty small amphitheater here in Atlanta. They're playing with EITS too, so I'm looking forward to that. It's a weird place though. There is a ton of room between the rows of seats and people bring small tables and have picnic dinner during the show.

I saw them play some new songs at rock ness. they were pretty promising, I am looking forward to the new album. I have to say though the show is not what it was when I saw them three years ago. perhaps they just hadn't got back into touring mode yet, or perhaps it was the thin audience that night, but it was not the euphoric experience it used to be. some of the older songs were stripped down almost naked -- just Wayne and an electric guitar. even Yoshimi!! that song lacked everything that used to make it great. I was a little disappointed. but perhaps they had an off night. or I had an off night. not sure. here's hoping the rest of the tour is better.

PotVsKtl
07-07-2009, 10:21 PM
Nothing on Yoshimi was great. I hope they do strip it down, the over the top bullshit was keeping them stagnant.
