I dunno guys. Orbital is great and all. But I really think Steve Aoki should get a turn at headliner. I mean he's really paid his dues and hasn't gotten much time in the limelight. Don't you think it's time he got a little recognition? Let Orbital have their shows in Europe. What do those clowns know about electronic music anyways? Steve Aoki is where it's at. It's going to be an awesome show.

From Orbital:

ORBITAL - 20

After unveiling headline performances at this summer’s hottest dance festivals, as well as a UK headline tour, dance pioneers Orbital announce the release of their most well known tracks plus some new mixes. Simply titled ‘ORBITAL 20’ the compilation celebrates 20 years of ground-breaking electronica, reworked and remixed onto 2 CD’s of generation-defining dance music, to be released on June 8th via Rhino Records.

“This compilation is the most definitive summary of our work since ‘Chime’ came out in 1989”, says Paul Hartnoll on the release of their definitive collection, “It's a great introduction, or indeed a reminder, of the story so far...”

Track listing plus a snippett of one of the new remixes can be found on the NEWS page at http://www.loopz.co.uk.

Paul Hartnoll TORMENTED score

Paul has finished the score to the film "Tormented". Below is a few words from the man himself.

"I wrote the score to the film, Tormented which is out on May 22nd. It's a comedy horror kind of film and the score is totally electronic with guest vocals from Lianne Hall. The score takes it's influence from the Malcolm Clark era radiophonic workshop (basically first analogue synth era), also the score to Children of the Stones (Look it up on YouTube) and the score to the Legend of Hell House (Delia Darbyshire and Brian Hodgson). Look that up on YouTube as it has a big smatering of good old fashioned break beat dance music. I also played holywood style drums recorded with one mike in a log cabin, so it's not entirely electronic."

"Completely low budget with a short lead time but i think it is all the better for it, both the film and score. No release dates for the score as yet."

The Trailer plus audio snippets will be online at http://www.loopz.co.uk.

ORBITAL - Next Live setup

First details or should i say, photos, have been sent to www.loopz.co.uk by Paul Hartnoll of the next live setup. For those who like their hardware...please visit the NEWS page at http://www.loopz.co.uk for the first look!

The stage was set up sort of like an island in the crowd. So, it was possible to be behind them, where I was for a portion of their set. I had like front row "backstage" to view them in action.

Edit:

Here is a list of some of the songs that they played

Theme to Clockwork Orange (played as they took the stage)
Way Out
The Dr. Who mix into Chime
Impact
Halcyon
Satan
The Box

No way....only the Sahara please...the atmosphere in that tent just can't be matched for a dance act on the main stage. The lasers, lights, and more just look way fucking cooler when they're bouncing off the roof of the tent, and giant balloons and disco balls and whatever else...and the sound is better in the Sahara...it surrounds you from all corners...I don't understand why people would prefer DJ's, or big EDM acts like Orbital on the big stage....just doesn't seem right, but maybe that's me?

boarderwoozel3
05-09-2009, 07:43 PM
It's not just you, Erik. EDM can be done on massive main stages in Europe but there isn't a big enough following in the US. Even at an event like Coachella. I didn't get why people thought the Chemical Brothers would play a DJ set on the mainstage and I don't get why that same thinking is being applied to Orbital. The Sahara is the only place for them.

ok, all valid and compelling arguments. The sound for Chemical Brothers on the main stage in 02 was fucking fantastic and I was well toward the back. The visual element just wasnt the same though for sure, and I think the visual element would be even more important experiencing an act like Orbital that entertains far more emotion than just the "rooooock and paaaaarty"" sensibility.

I'd would just like to join in on the enthusiasm for Orbital playing at Coachella next year.

As far as Main Stage vs Sahara goes... a comparison came to mind... I saw Kraftwerk play in the tent in '04 and on the main in '08... (no, not really dance music, but electronic nonetheless.) Both were great sets with crystal clear sound and drew pretty large crowds. I've been trying to decide which one I liked more and I just can't. I love the tent, but its always great to get out and hear electronic music under the stars. (I thought DJ Shadow on the Outdoor in '07 was also a grand time, despite the issues.) So I guess what I'm getting at is... I don't give a shite where they play as long as the play.

Orbital is the one act I am demanding for 2010. The only reason they shouldn't play is if after these summer shows they decide that's enough.... which I hope doesn't happen.

Orbital should play in the Sahara. Nothing else will suit them.

If they did any other stage/tent, they'd have to close it. It wouldn't be the sahara, but it'd suffice.

If they played before a headlining act on the mainstage, I honestly don't think I'd ever go to Coachella again.

this makes most other electronic artists look bad. this was (twice) one of my best concert experiences ever. it was fucking beautiful. rarely have I been in crowds that are so full of joy... by the end EVERYONE around was dancing like mad, grinning from ear to ear, loving every moment.

I canīt wait for them to come to california. coachella or otherwise, I canīt wait to share this with more people. (on that note I have some videos I will share when I get home)

I wish some of you could have been here.

signing out. probably wonīt be on the board again until July. I just had to log in to provide a brief report.

saw them at sonar in barcelona last month, i have to say kind of boring. take it in mnid that i had an opportunity to see them quite a bit during the 90's both here and overseas; the show is basically the same as back then.

this isnt a bad thing, espeically for fans that have never been able to see them, but for us older people it would be nice to see a new type of show.

regardless, one of the tightest live electronic acts on the road.

shakermaker113
07-09-2009, 02:32 PM

in the first one, satan is awfully long and kinda repetetive. it might be worth letting the entire video cache then skip ahead to the 6 or 7 minute mark to see the transition into belfast, which is truly beautiful.

Orbital Live Flash USB Wristband (glow in the dark)

Take home the Orbital tour LIVE recording experience on the USB and microSD wristband.

The Orbital concerts from their forthcoming tour will be recorded live each night and loaded to the Orbital wristband that plugs into any USB port or compatible microSD phone and other devices. Pre-order your USB wristband from the list below now and we'll send it to you a fortnight after the show has taken place.

Listen to the live show on your computer, burn it to a CD, or upload it to your iPod or any mp3 compatible device. Mac and PC compatible.

apparently they screwed up and in the end only six september shows will be available.

Lovely.

I'd like to bring attention to their mix of Belinda Carlisle's Heaven Is A Place On Earth. Words cannot describe my glee when they dropped it. But like an ass, I managed to video and delete the song thinking it was a crummy picture. But I do have a number of decent pictures and one ~8 minute video. That to come.

Ahhhhh. So what time did they pay Jeff? Was it a sunset set, into some night tunes??? How long did they play? How was the crowd?

So aside from being a dust bowl, Get Loaded was a well run festival. There were about 20k people there and I was able to go from Royksopp's set at 7pm--opposite end of the grounds from the mainstage--to get more drinks. Drinks in hand I swung by Crookers for 10 minutes. During that time they dropped knobbers, their best beat, IMO. As I weave my way into the mainstage crowd Rob Da Bank plays Soulwax's remix of Hey Boy, Hey Girl followed by another song that I liked a lot but can't recall. The mood was set. And all of this in time for a 7:30 pm Orbital start.

Orbital, the set started at 7:30 and ended a shade after 9pm. Clapham Common is a larger public park in a residential area. I'm sure the neighbors could hear the music so it couldn't go too late. That's what the after party at Fabric was for. Anywho, as the set progressed Orbital won everyone over, loosened the slightly less dancy folks and twenty minutes into the set the field was an all out dance party that continued to it's conclusion. Walking out of the field there was a feeling of OMG what did we just watch. It was pretty insane.

You're right about '01, it was October 25th in LA at the Palladium.

Omg, I am such a tard. I even remember looking at that list last year... I guess I forgot to look in the most obvious place: Their website.

Nevertheless, 2001 is unacceptable. I haven't heard much from Orbitals camp about plans to extend into a full blown tour. I kind feel like they aren't as big a deal over here as they should be. Maybe I'm wrong though...

Orbital never gave the US a proper send off when they first "retired" in 2004. Playing a one-off at Coachella next year would be the best thing they could offer us US fans I think. I really hope it happens. I mean Coachella has every other big dance act play (Chems 5 times, Underworld twice, Fatboy twice, Prodigy twice, Groove Armada twice, the Orb twice, Crystal Method twice, Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk, Moby etc...). Orbital is the only one left.

Plus I'm sure Paul T. is a fan of them (he always mentions that Organic festival as being a huge influence on him), so I'm sure he'll at least try to get em out here next year.

Leeartlee
09-17-2009, 12:16 PM
Yes, yes, and more yes. The fact that they are the last, dare I say, classic edm group yet to play should make them a top priority for sure.

I remember that interview too where Paul talked about the Organic Festival being a turning point in his life. What I didn't remember is that Orbital played there. But wasn't that entire lineup sick as fuck? Gotta go find that thing...

menikmati
09-17-2009, 12:22 PM
I believe the lineup was MeatBeat Manifesto, The Orb, Orbital, Underworld, Chemical Brothers, and Loop Guru, or something like that. There's a image of the poster out there somewhere, I've seen it before...I'll try to find it.

So let me see if I hear you right. Orbital will be spoiled if they are put in the dance tent? If memory serves correct, Daft played the tent and they turned that motha' out.

In general, I wish they would spread the dance acts out ever so slightly to the main stage. I thought Thievery Corp was perfect at main last year. And when Daft Punk does eventually play Coach again (sadly, I think the chances of that this year are slim to none) they will play the main. Maybe I'm wrong, but they just seem to big to be shoved in the dance tent again.

Hopefully, this will be applied to Orbital when they get announced this year :D

Orbital doesn't have enough of a US following to be a mainstage act. That is, when it matters: at night. Not to mention they need time to blow minds, and if they were mainstage, they'd maybe get a dismal hour and some change.

If anything, throw them in the Gobi like they did with the Orb except LET THEM FUCKING KEEP PLAYING. No reason why that tent couldn't keep going until whenever.

menikmati

boarderwoozel3

Here's the deal, yo. (If Orbital grace the bill this year...)

Can Orbital Carry the mainstage? Yes, absolutely. Will they be on the mainstage? No. Like someone mentioned they don't have a large enough following stateside to justify that. Furthermore, they have a snowball's chance in hell of playing the Gobi. Comparing them to the orb is a little silly. Notice the Gobi was about perfect size for the Orb last year, crowd size-wise.

The only place Orbital would play is at the end of the night in the Sahara, period. They'd draw the curtains and then voila, there's their setup in the front portion of the stage.

Leeartlee
09-18-2009, 08:05 AM
I totally agree. I was stating a wish, not a prediction.

Over the years, when I mention Orbital being one of my favorite EDM groups, at best people say to me, "Yeah, I've heard of them." I'm not sure why, but bassheads here stateside seem to have cut their teeth on Prodigy, Chem Bros, and the like. It's almost like there is a mental block on the brother duo.

But can you imagine those curtains being drawn and those emblematic headlights bursting out over the Coachella revelers? God that would be epic.

what about Daft Punk?

I'm all for having Daft Punk back in the Sahara tent (maybe I'm in the minority there)....having Kraftwerk on the main stage in 2008 was bloody awful I thought (and I love Kraftwerk)...the vibe was just totally different. Some things aren't meant to be, and having dance/electronic music on the big outdoor stage is one of them (imagine putting DCFC in the Sahara????). So while Daft, if they played again, would most likely be on the main stage (and I think most people think this because every other big festival in the US and such lacks a huge dance tent, so they had no where to go except the big outdoor stages, so people got use to that), I would be all for seeing them in the Sahara again, in fact I would prefer it that way.

Nah. Outside of their EDM fanbase they're generally not well known and certainly don't have any sort of crossover fan base that M.I.A. does. Truth be told M.I.A. is probably way more popular in the states, sad as that is. They'd put on an EDM clinic to a full Sahara. Minds will be warped, expanded, changed, rocked, packaged up in masterfully crafted melodies and handed back blown.

Right. So that's why some creepy old guy I know, my mom's friend and a few of my neighbors that are in middle school know who Daft Punk are. Their collab with Kanye doesn't make them much of a crossover act? Like somebody said, Pineapple Express and the likes helped M.I.A blow up like she did. M.I.A played the Grammys, and so did Daft Punk. And where I live, I hear Daft Punk being played on jukeboxes more than I ever hear M.I.A... Which is never.

OOoohhhhhhh! You were talking about Daft Punk! That makes a lot more sense. Shaker and I thought you were referring to Orbital (this being the Orbital thread and all). I'd prefer to see them in the tent but you're right, given their legendary status at this point, it'd be a clusterfuck.

Oh, pssshhhh. You know what I meant.

Gribbz, you really can't go wrong with Orbital but my favorites are Altogether, Blue Album Untitled II. Also, there are a few good live recordings floating around. I think one form Get Loaded In The Park is on The Mixing Bowl or Dime.

The Altogether bonus second disc (starting with track 3) is the fucking bomb. But I still think Snivilisation is the best work. It hints at whats to come with In Sides while still retaining their dancy elements of The Brown album.

Yes, Snivilisation is their best stuff by far. Though their best song/track/whatever is still Chime I think.

You would say that having Jonny Lee Miller as your avatar ;)

But yeah, if it wasn't for Halcyon + on + on, I probably would have taken me a lot longer to get into electronica then I did. I remember that song coming on in the opening credits of Hackers and thinking, "Wow, wtf is that and where can I hear more?"
