Oh sweet Jesus of Nazareth! I don't care what you hipsters say, this... is a great day in ghey history. For a British kid who grew up on Kylie this is huge. I never thought she'd tour North America. Never. Grace Jones and Kylie Mingoue at the Hollywood Bowl this year? It's almost too much for my lil heart to take. I'll have to settle for the Hammerstein Ballroom as I will be in NY, but this is so great.

And, whatever, you bastards. Some of you were creaming yourselves just a few months ago at the prospect of a Kylie appearance in the Sahara.

I imagine it will have to slightly scaled down from this:

...but it's still going to be epic. Epic I tell you. Happiness is a 40 year old Australian pop diva in person.

I feel no guilt and neither should you, TeamCoachellaHellYeah. Not a drop. Just pure, unadulterated joy. And nothing that some bi-curious, ‘straight acting’ Tool loving fool on this board says will stop me from loving this moment! No doubt the gheys will be out in full force for this tour, but I’d say to also expect a fair number of the hipster set, too. She’s almost indie-pop here.

This is indeed her first ever tour of the North America. I’ve been waiting for this since I moved to the US.

Though I do believe, in my heart of hearts, that Kylie and I are konnected [sic], I don’t have any insider info. That being said, I would imagine that we’re going to get a scaled down version of her arena tour. There’s simply no way all of those theatrics can fit onto the stages of these venues including the shell of the Hollywood Bowl. I’m sure it will still be spectacular, though.

They’ve already added a second date for NY! Pre-sale must be going very well. I get to see her twice in a row.

“Kylie has such a successful career outside of North America that it has taken quite a while to find a window in her schedule for the U.S. and Canada,” said Bill Silva, Minogue’s tour promoter. “Her amazing fans in North America will be well rewarded for their patience when they experience her show and its entire spectacle. We are confident in the tour’s success, and hope that Kylie will make this the first of many tours to our shores.”

I don't know what is wrong with some of the ney sayers on here, Kylie would be a perfect fit for Coachella. I remember some of the tracks off Body Language had fucking KICKIN' basslines. She is heavily remixed by some of the top people in the EDM business and has great stage presence. So she's a little cheezy, but if Coldplay and The Killers can play, so can she.

Kylie's US dream is really a nightmare

Article from: Sunday Herald Sun

James Campbell

May 10, 2009 12:00am

IT is the most shattering experience of a young man's life when he awakes and reasonably says to himself: "I will never play The Dane."

Thus speaks a character in the great British movie Withnail & I about two drunken actors who spend a weekend in the country attempting to dry out.

It's also a film about growing up and accepting our limitations - in Withnail's case, that he is never going to play Hamlet.

The line popped into my mind during the week when the news came through that Kylie Minogue is having a crack at making it in the US.

She's tried before.

Americans have had ample opportunity to sample Kylie's wares and they've said, "Thanks, but no thanks".

Of course the mysterious thing about Minogue's career is not why she has failed to make it in America, but how she managed to make it so big anywhere at all.

Her records are ok-ish at best and it's no surprise that the best of them - Can't Get You Out Of My Head - is the closest she has come to a No.1 US hit.

That record was released in 2001, but there's been silence on the charts since then.

Minogue's diminutive stature in the US was demonstrated again during the week in the coverage of her appearance in New York where she turned on the lights of the Empire State Building on behalf of a breast cancer charity before heading out to party with r'n'b singer Rihanna.

The British headlines were "Rihanna looms over Kylie" and "Rihanna towers over diminutive Kylie", drawing attention to the startling fact that one is tall and other is short.

And the Americans? MTV reported it as "Rihanna Attends Charity Event For 6-Year-Old Cancer Patient" and mentioned that "Kylie Minogue (was) in attendance".

I wouldn't claim to be an expert in these matters, but I think it's fair to say that if you still have your surname - unlike Oprah, Madonna, Brad and Angelina - you're a long way from being a household name.

Sorry, Kylie. The Yanks just aren't that into you and at 40 the chances of them changing their minds now are about as good as me realising my childhood fantasy of playing Dr Who.

In fact at 40, the chances of anyone being that into you grow slimmer each year and the question for Minogue is how she wants to age in public.

Is she going to grow old gracefully, or she going to make a fool of herself like Madonna?

Watching Madonna dancing around in her 50s reminds me of Dr Johnson's line about a woman preaching being like a dog walking on its hind legs: "It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."

Fortunately there is evidence Minogue realises the idea of a 40-year-old sex kitten is as inherently funny as the idea of a 40-year-old virgin.

Then there is the news that she has taken up golf - like so many other women from Surrey Hills in their 40s seem to do.

She's naturally taken to it in an over-the-top way - reportedly spending more than $80,000 on clubs for her houses around the world.

But that aside, the implication is clear - golf is for the middle-aged and by taking it up Minogue is acting her age.

It would be ironic if having begun her career channelling Brigitte Bardot, she should end it by channelling Dinah Shore.

Kylie Gives Peak Performance Up Mountain

2:55pm UK, Tuesday May 05, 2009

Kylie Minogue has wowed thousands of fans by performing on top of a mountain in an Austrian ski resort.

Kylie Minogue performs on stage during the saison closure party of the winter resort in Ischgl, Austria

Kylie says her priorities in life have changed since her treatment for cancer

The pop princess braved icy temperatures, wearing only a pair of black sequinned trousers, a tight-fitting black top, leather elbow-length gloves and black stiletto boots as she sung in the Tyrolean resort of Ischgl - 2,300m high.

An 18,000-strong audience watched the 40-year-old perform old and new tunes at the resort's Top Of The Mountain gig, which celebrated the end of the ski season.

When talking about life after her cancer treatment, the singer revealed that her priorities in life have shifted.

Minogue said: "I want to kind of, live a bit more. I am still managing to do the work I am passionate about, but in my free time I am actually doing other things. Right now, I hope it lasts, I have a really wonderful balance, I feel very, very grateful."

Part of that balance also includes the diva's relationship with Spanish model Andres Velencoso who is 10 years younger than her.

The star is trying to learn Spanish for him, although slowly. She admits: "I just need to put the time in, time and dedication. But we'll get to that."

Ischgl is one of Austria's most popular skiing resorts and celebrates with a celebrity pop performance every year.

Previous years have seen Sir Elton John, The Pussycat Dolls and Rhianna perform at the same event.

Article from: Sunday Herald Sun

dude obviously doesn't get the idea that being unpopular in the US is a good thing.

Rather snarky article, which is par for the course with most British press. I don't think this tour is about building a massive new audience. I'm sure she's more than aware now that she's going to be a bit of a niche artist in the US. But, she recognizes that she has a devoted following here, so she may as well take advantage of it.

what's next, B. Spears thread?

You should have seen the Britney Spears thread back in fall and how many people genuinely believed she could/would play Coachella on Sat. It was rough.

It wasn't initially. Unless my aging brain is failing me, the Blue Monday sample was first used for The Brits performance, and it went down such a storm that that's kind of how people remember it now.

The actual single release version is just verrrrrrrrry similar , but the live version does actually incorporate Blue Monday with permission.

EDIT:

Also, yes. She certainly does know how to make an entrance, by God.

How dare you sir.

Kylie Minogue has consistently made some of the finest pop singles of the last twenty years. Lesser pretenders have come and gone a thousand times in the meantime and spent their whole career without ever touching her hooks, pop smarts, polish or show...woman...ship...

With no irony or hyperbole, I can honestly say it would joy me right out of my mind to know I was going to a Kylie show, in a way that blows yer Goldfrapps or yer Roisin Murphys or what have you right out of the water.

Then again, I grew up with Charlene Robinson. Rounds' here, the lady is rightly recognised single by single.

No doubt the audience is going to be filled with giddy gheyz even more excited than the day they discovered their prostate, but I think one can conceivably argue that Kylie is indie-pop. At least in comparison to artists who are more popular in the US like Britney, Madonna, etc. So, I think there should be a good number of heterosexuals there. I'm actually bringing a straight friend. So there will be at least two of you.

That was a ridiculously fun evening. I never thought I’d see Kylie in the US. It was as dazzling a spectacle as one could hope for in a mini 6 city tour. The eye-catching video projections, lighting, lasers, set pieces (that metallic skull was amazing!), achingly beautiful dancers, tight band (with brass section) and couture costume changes galore made this a truly spectacular evening. Of course, none of that matters if you don’t have a great star at the center of it all.

Despite her diminutive size, Kylie has a hell of a lot presence. She is still so incredibly beautiful in her 40s. Every time we got a close up on her face or body I would hear people around me cooing about how they hope they look half as good at 40+ etc. Her voice is thin, but like Diana Ross she knows how to employ it effectively for maximum impact. The majority of her songs are about sex and dancing. And the ones about dancing are really about sex anyway. She knows how to feed the audience that raw, hungry sexual energy without making it intimidating or overpowering. I imagine that’s part of her enormous appeal in the Europe. She’s the gorgeous sex kitten and yet simultaneously seems so approachable.

I don’t think you would accuse Kylie of being an incredible dancer, but she moves so seductively and effortlessly across the stage - with or without her dancers. Throughout the evening she would combine the sound of breathless longing in her voice with the suggestive movement of her body and a look of utter rapture on her face. It was like she was spending most of the show lost in sexual and romantic ecstasy. Everything remains sweet and bubbly but a harder, edgier presence lingers just below the surface. It’s like whipped cream with razor blades.

I would pretty much echo everything Rage said up there ^. An absolutely magical evening. I can die and go to gay heaven now. It looked more like 3/4 full to me.

The only thing I didn't care for was that whole Hollywood glamor ballad section. It felt like she was not so subtly auditioning for any random producer who might have been in the audience. If she'd stuck to just one ballad it would have been much stronger.

Also, the sound was the biggest issue. It was way too soft. They turned it up a bit 1/4 of the way thru the concert, but it was still not loud enough. For the first few songs I could easily hear what my friends were saying to me as they talked in their normal speaking voices. I was hoping for bass that shook me and synths that shimmered all around me. I talked to a friend in SF who saw the Oakland show and said it was very loud inside the Fox Theatre, so maybe it was just Hollywood and the large outdoor Bowl?

BTW, Supre, why can't you have a hard-on for Kylie instead of Thom? There are quite a few YT videos out there of the Hollywood Bowl show but of varying length and questionable quality. No one needs to see Thom Yorke dancing around without clothing on. That's Kylie's game.

I wonder if Paul Tollett was there. Hmmm...

Jewface, I completely agree with you about the sound that and the lame crowd were the only two negatives about the show. Maybe it was my section but everybody seemed to be sitting through half the show. I expected a big dance party and didn't get one. LAME.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Which section were you in? We were in the Promenade next to and behind some of the garden boxes. My friends and I (and everyone around us) were dancing our asses off. I'm pretty sure I was dancing during the ballads too. Ha ha. If she ever comes back to So Cal I think an indoor venue will be much better. Nokia perhaps? Palladium? Still, beggars can't be choosers. We're one of the few people who got to see Kylie on American soil. I've still got all that fizzy dance pop buzzing in my head and I listened to nothing but Kylie for 90 mins at the gym tonight. It's basically Kylie week in my world.

I did note that I never thought I would see a gayer crowd than at a Madonna concert. I think the only time a crowd could get gayer than Kylie Minogue is perhaps the Scissor Sisters.

Yes! It totally was Scissor Sisteresque wasn't it? I cannot get that catchy synth line from the song out of my head. The song already sounded great live, so I can't wait to hear what they do with it in the studio. Here's a pretty good capture. There's better video out there, but I think this one has the best audio:

Well that's a shame. I know there's a strict curfew (at least for the Sunday) shows because of the yuppies who live in the Hollywood Hills. I wonder if there's also a noise restriction in place. Grace Jones' sound was much louder at the Bowl. And the few times I'd seen Radiohead there things were much louder.

You should be jealous, Mattyboy. Sound issues aside, it was so much fun. I was reading a rather frank article about the tour this weekend and Ms. Minogue was quoted as saying touring in the US was never feasible in the past and that it still wasn't now but she really wanted to give her US audiences a show. She said she'd never sat in on so many heated budget meetings in her life. So... hate to say to say it, but I wouldn't take the success of this tour as an indication of her eventual return. This really may have been a one-off.

She said she'd never sat in on so many heated budget meetings in her life. So... hate to say to say it, but I wouldn't take the success of this tour as an indication of her eventual return. This really may have been a one-off.

Link to article? Id love to read it..

Aw! She's adorable. I didn't know about that tour video blog; just watched a few of them. It's actually a rather interesting look behind the scenes. And, Jesus Christ, those dancers (phwah!) I would gladly misplace my moral compass for some sight-seeing with them.

So there are some "news articles" out there about Kylie being offered a Vegas residency after her tour ends. I call BS on that one. She doesn't have the name recognition or known catalog in the US to sustain a nightly residency.

I know! If circumstances were a bit different, I'd be living in NY right now. My friend Patrick is going to all three of the NY shows. He's an asshole.

I wouldn't mind wandering into the dancer's dressing room. For chit chat, of course.

Something tells me the pre-edit version did not end with "chit chat".

I enjoyed every bit of the show. I went to the Hollywood Bowl Show of course. I saw Perez and I think Jeffree Star there.

Sweet! Thanks for the info, Hunter. She did a killer new version of Speakerphone that everyone around me wanted to get their hands on. Will be nice to have a high quality version rather than relying on poor audio quality yt rips.

So do Australians really go to the beach on Xmas? That just seems so... wrong.

EDIT:
Didn't see your YT link. We get a studio version of the track too. Nice!
