Also, Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners. I'm sure plenty of people think it's a classic, but I'd bet a good number of them had feathered hair in the 80s.

I don't think there is ever a karoake night where someone doesnt get up to sing this song. Its classic as far as Im concerned for that alone. Not because I like it.

something else to think about is what makes a song "classic" can a song be "classic" if its not exposed to the main world culture?

i guess what im referring to is a song like windowlicker by aphex twin

If classic means that three generations from now, most of those kids will know (or at least have heard a few times) the song, then the only classics I think have been mentioned so far are Smashing Pumpkin's "1979," Ace of Base's "The Sign," and Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen."

Some of these responses are semi-ridiculous. How can one possibly suggest that a song nobody's fucking heard of will become or is a "classic?"

I'm looking at you, Sugarcubes and fucking Orbital and My Morning Jacket sayers.

True...I guess "classic" would have to be something that the masses are familiar with. Something that would appear in a Time Life Collections commercial in 2030. Right?

Just thought of this today after hearing it on the radio:

Elvis Costello - Watching the Detectives.

Eric from Sublime pretty much owes his career to this song.

how many of the "masses" even know who Leonard Cohen is? does that mean "I'm Your Man" isn't a classic?
