Why hello ms. Newsom

The Milk Eyed Mender probably. Most of my favorite albums from this decade have been sophomore or 3rd album releases. Yellow House, Drums Not Dead, Ys, Veckatimest, Nouns, Hlllyh, yadayadayada.

Maybe Weirdo Rippers, or maybe HEALTH

Um, yes, Funeral for me too.

I never feel the need to skip a track, and everytime I listen to it I find something else. Bass line I never noticed before, or a backing vocal or something. I love every second of it, from that little fluttery bit of piano at the start of Tunnels to the sad, tired silence after In The Backseat. The first line always makes me smile, and the last one makes me hit Repeat.

Other notables.

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000F5GO0A.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V54941719_.jpg

I can always listen to this. It's one of my default albums, if I can't decide what to listen to, there's always Gulag Orkestar. Until I make myself sick of it for a bit, but that doesn't take long to fade.

I hate this album art, but I love this album:
http://dic.academic.ru/pictures/enwiki/65/ApologiestotheQueenMary.jpg

The previously mentioned Apologies To The Queen Mary, by Wolf Parade.

It's lost it's novelty a bit, and I do lately find myself skipping the odd song more and more -which one varies depending on my mood - but it's still a ripsnorting beast of a thing. But even if ten of it's tracks were shite, it's still got I'll Believe in Anything, so it would still be a winner.

Also, I've just now learned that Tim Kingsbury did some of the bass for this. Thank you, Wikipedia.

This is totally my favourite album art of the bunch:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vMkmfeijXyE/SGExDOh3awI/AAAAAAAAAHw/SiGUcJcvHNM/s1600/Gutter%2Btwins.jpg

Saturnalia, Gutter Twins.

But this sort of feels like cheating, since Gutter Twins aren't exactly a bunch of young upstarts bursting out of the traps from nowhere.

Seriously. I've been talking about this with all my music-conscious friends and it's fucking crazy. I think Bryan's already trying to assess his top records (after all, he made that one thread), but it's pretty obvious what record would top a group consensus-driven list.

I started that list so that we'd have something to work off once we were compiling our best of the decade lists. That way there'll be a reference for things that came out. hence, why I was taking everybody's suggestions, even if they were utter crap.

The obvious choice for me was Funeral, but I thought no, there has to be one I like more - three that I've seen mentioned that contended for the prize are Melody A.M., Fleet Foxes and De-Loused in the Comatorium. I just truly can't say I like any of those better than Funeral. Fleet Foxes is close but Funeral is more of a "favorite" for me without a doubt.

Is anyone forgetting Deltron 3030 perhaps? Or The Eraser by Thom Yorke? Just throwing those out there, not my favorites, although I've really grown to love The Eraser over time.

Technically the decade ends next year, with the new one starting 2011. But I guess no one goes by that system irl huh?

If it were their debut, it'd be my favorite debut bar none. But, it's their second album. Cryptograms may very well find its way into my top ten of the decade. But Battles is a strong, strong contender for mine as well. It's so well made I forget it's a debut.

If I had to make a Top 10 Strongest Debut of the '00s...

1. "Funeral" by Arcade Fire
2. "Is This It?" by The Strokes
3. "Agaetis Byrjun" by Sigur Ros
4. "De-Loused in the Comatorium" by The Mars Volta
5. "Mirrored" by Battles
6. "Cryptograms" by Deerhunter
7. "Yellow House" by Grizzly Bear
8. "The Milk-Eyed Meander" by Joanna Newsom
9. "Fever to Tell" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
10. "They Threw Us All in a Trench..." by Liars

The top 4 are tied so much though it's not even funny. I love them all so equally. That ordering there is really just completely random. They're all in the same place!

Technically, you're right; it's the first appearance of the Animal Collective moniker. However, if we want to get REALLY hardcore, I would consider Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished the first appearance of music that would later be filed under the name "Animal Collective."

Also, I made my list without looking at anyone elses; nice to see some repeats, and nice to see some ones I forgot.

Just saw them last week. Didn't like them that much at Coachella last year, a little boring, but last week they were great, I am happy to report! Sounded much better. I am annoyed that their follow-up is not out yet.

And A Perfect Circle, there's another one I didn't think about - that beats Mars Volta for me, but doesn't beat Melody A.M. Arcade Fire still wins then.

that album was with his band Bohack.

I already knew that. I don't see that as any different than my earlier question about Neko Case Blacklisted. She had previous recordings with a band but it's all just a technicality as she continues to have other musicians play with her but she only goes by Neko Case.

Would you say Blacklisted is or isn't her debut? Is she more solo now because she is simply Neko Case? I would say less since she had about 20 people make that album with her.

Thank you for caring enough to offer an opinion Brandon. :) Hearing her perform live supporting that album was a painful concert experience but she has greatly improved and her voice was still worth the hassle she created throughout her peformance of that first show I saw.

I've got a top 20. It's only for today, seeing as how I'm going to be revisiting this quite a bit. My number 1 was technically released in 1999, although that was only a limited edition box set version in Japan, so I'm still counting it, and I hope you all do the same.

ah shit man. don't fuck with my list like that.

i liked that "marvelous things" song, but the rest of the eisley album was crap. i was disappointed.
They're my guilty pleasure. I really enjoy their harmonies, although the lyrics are somewhat silly and nonsensical at times. The 2nd album isn't quite as good and is rather unfocussed to me.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see the Fields love. I have literally never been able to have a conversation about them out loud, I just get blank stares for a second and then... "Like... Magnetic Fields?"

What's the deal with them anyway, I haven't heard anything about them since one of 'em quit?

Also, quit baiting me.

I'm only going to list debut albums that I've personally listened to hundreds of times. I don't give a flying fuck how they were reviewed or how they sold.

Avalanches - Since I Left You
M.I.A. - Arular
Tenacious D - s/t
Zero 7 - Simple Things

If I only had 4 albums to listen to for the rest of eternity, these would suffice.

It's funny the only thing people will ever agree on is that Pablo Honey sucks

It's their weakest album, but it definitely doesn't suck to me. True, it was very of-the-time and a very generic alternative mid-90's rock album. It's just that their work after that album was so mind-bogglingly more stellar that PH seems shitty in comparison.

There's a reason that the message boards light up when Radiohead chooses to only play "Blow Out" to close out a tour in Japan. "Lurgee" and "Thinking About You" are also amazing.

well their first album was basically the two eps redone, and the ep versions of the songs are better than the ones on MT... they butchered telescope eyes on the album.

I saw them three times in '07, and uh, was unimpressed. They might have worked well in smaller venues or with smaller crowds, but it was clear they just couldn't engage a big audience. I've warmed to their recorded stuff since, but I really actively disliked their live shows.

I wouldn't write them off completely, but the music they perform and the way they perform it just doesn't really allow for them to get anything going with a big crowd.

I can imagine it being a lot cooler and more intense in a smaller space, but in a crowd of a few thousand, they're just lost.

Agaetis Byrjun is 2000s release. Even if they released it in 1999 in Iceland, nobody heard until the 2000s...

Date of release regardless of country is what matters. And Von came out before Agaetis Byrjun so thats their debut anyway.

Internal Wrangler is certainly good but I think they got better with their next two.

And I got to see them in a small venue (>500) in 2004 and they definitely had control of the crowd there. They put on a fantastic show and got a great response.

For Phoenix folk this was at the Old Brickhouse when it was newish and still great and Sons & Daughters (first I knew of them) and High Water Marks were the opening bands. Damn, that was a good show.

Also with regard to favorite debuts of the 2000s for me it would be a race between Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights and Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary.

The top five would probably be rounded out by something like Arcade Fire - Funeral and Two Gallants - The Throes and I don't know what else is in there. You Have Seen Us... You Must Have Seen Us... by KaitO? No Kill Beep Beep by Q And Not U? Third by Portishead?

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
