just a little constructive criticism. You might consider renaming it "twister for the inflexible".

I was thinking it should be named "Futile psyche in waves of lust", but it's probably not pretentious enough!

Speaking of art...Thats one thing I was kind of dissapointed 'bout last year...does anyone else feel like there was a lack of art last year and hope for more this year???

Does anyone remember or saw them play that huge string instrument i think in 04...I got a few of the cd's but can't remember the name of the group...I think they were from illinois...I'd like to see some more stuff like that and more interactive art...like the lighted tunnel and good shit of that sort...

chris burden the performance artist? i love him. love. him. he's brilliant. check this out:

In 1975 he created the fully operational B-Car, a lightweight four-wheeled vehicle that he described as being "able to travel 100 miles per hour and achieve 100 miles per gallon".

That is indeed Mr. Burden. He also created "The Other Vietnam Memorial" which had the names of the Vietnamese that died during the war. He did a piece where every person that walked through the turnstile added one click of pressure to a pneumatic lift that was braced against the supporting walls of the gallery/museum...so every person that came to see his work was systematically destroying the building through that action. He did hire a person to shoot him in the arm and called it art. He also had himself crucified on the hood of a VW Beatle (actual nails through his hands). I actually found a small piece of his art while working at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego...one of his nickles with the matchstick glued to it from his piece, "The Reason for the Atomic Bomb" (several thousand nickels with matchsticks glued on, arranged on the floor of the gallery represented every tank in the Soviet army). That guy is the $hiznit...lol.

sub bass...is that skull with the gas mask an original? very very nice. yeah ever hear of bob flanagan???

Yeah...I actually was teaching a summer school art class at SDSU and did it as a demonstration on how to draw from a still-life & turn that into a stencil. I set up a still life with a model of a skull & an old respirator mask, drew it directly on a manilla folder, inked the areas to be cut out, and cut it with an X-Acto blade in about 3 hours of working time. Some of the kids learned how to stencil from it and ended up doing some really nice work. I was stoked though because it's one of my favorite stencils I've done.

Far as Bob Flanagan goes, I'm not familiar with his work. I'll google him and check it out.

02-18-2007, 12:49 PM
Haha...nah...I left it in the bookstore at the La Jolla location in the safe. A little bag of the nickels. If you ever get to know anyone that works there now, ask them if the baggie is still in the safe. In fact, you could probably ask for change for a dollar and request the nickels be the ones in the safe with the matches glued to them. See if they'd go for it! LoL...

And here is the first test-spray of the stencil with a quarter on the upper right for size reference...it's gonna need to be stuck down better (probably with spray adhesive, which means it may be a one-off print) to avoid the blurry edges, but again, this was just a test-spray to check the cuts.

SubBass49

Usually sculpture and stuff like that. They've also had designer portapotties and recycling bins (the Hunter S. Thompson one was sadly prophetic...he shot it with a shotgun). Lot of interactive welded stuff too...

I'm making 6 copies total. 5 will be on sale at the show in Italy, and one will be in the permanent collection of the gallery.

Since ya'll probably wont make it to Italy for the show (I know ya love me, but come on)...I set up a cafepress shop with my design:

So stop by and buy something...yeah...pay for my beers at Coachella or something...lol.

The ones for the exhibition come first of course, but after that I plan on making as many as I can on thin cheap paper and giving them away for people to keep or wheatpaste...

Thanks.

I must admit it doesn't come off as good close up, though. I mean I like the floor and all but the details on the body and espeically the face were way tough and I didn't capture what I wanted. She's lying in an odd position there; the shading on her body was not intuitive at all.

But it's up in a big room and it's on a far wall when you walk in the front door so I think it comes off fairly well.

you guys haven't heard of the fang before? it's gross, I accidentally read the definition of it one time when I was working at a medical billing place. it's like this wicked rash that breaks out and if you don't get cream for it you develop these disgusting pustules that break really easy and look like wicked bite marks when they do. that's why they call it The Fang. Although I wish I could remember what the clinical name was.

Bringin' it back. These 4 pieces are from the series I just completed with my friend and fellow printmaker Shara DeWitt (http://www.sharaster.com). They're for the exhibition on Saturday, but you guys get to see them now. All are currently untitled. We're working on that. each piece is 12 x 24 on a wood panel. Ink transfer and ink. They also have really nice, hand-sanded rounded corners, but that doesn't translate very well in the pics so I trimmed them.

Ewiggy, I like those. The transformation of the geometric lines of technology into the organic forms of a tendril of plant matter is a nice contrast. (Or is it perhaps more sinister than a plant? A bloody artery blown-up to monstrous proportions?) And the use of wood is interesting as it underlines this organic/technological divide.

They almost are going to a place similar to Kiki Smith, but replacing the delicacy of her work with a graphic intensity.

Hmm. Well here's a piece from my first chapbook...

A Party You're Not Invited To

If it's true what they say
about everyone having skeletons in their closet,
I'd like to believe mine
are dancing.

Swaying to the melodies of
Billie Holiday or Nina Simone or
maybe they're body rockin'
to funk and soul and
not a soul knows
except me.

I'll bet between
stone-washed jeans and a
vintage tee they're
waltzing to symphonies
and harmonies like
honeybees around a hive.

Perhaps their soft taps
are backed by a hip hop beat
from Common or Jay-Z
or Only God Can Judge Me.

Maybe it's classic rock like
Skynyrd,
The Doors or Stones
or Bad to the Bone
though it would be
so horribly literal.

They move
with hollow skulls and no regret,
rotting teeth and cigarettes.

They glide among my
hangers and shoes
insecurities and pride though
they have no eyes
so they really can't cry.

The ribcage is a stage and
their once-alive hearts
are steppin' to the beat
of all that moves and lives
and they live for torment and pleasure.

Envy doesn't get much better
than an array of joints
sharing a head nod and a
joint in remembrance of a
Marley song cuz we've all
done wrong but
every little thing's
gonna be alright.

Sometimes I think I
hear them whispering
in murmurs that sound like
almost-laughs and
I wish I was in on their joke.

Misery must really love company
because there are hundreds of them
drinking and clinking their cups to sin.

And even though we hold
so much disdain for one another
I don't know of any other
marrow that turns sorrow into celebration.

And one night when the world is
a chaos of bad dreams and
untucked sheets
I'd like to believe
amid a closet door creak
and bedtime feet
they'll let me in

...to dance.

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/6684/dillavinylvd7.jpg

Tribute to J Dilla (RIP) on a vinyl record. 3 stencils used to make it. Copper spraypaint (design - stencil 1) on green background. Tan to brown fade (background of Dilla & scroll - stencil 2). Matte black (detail Dilla & scroll - stencil 3). I made two of these...this one is on my wall in my living room, and I MIGHT sell the other one on E-bay or something.

I'll also be bringing some T-shirts of my design to Coachella with me. Might trade them for beer, hook them up to true Dilla fans, or give them to celebs I meet.

this is one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me. i got a message on myspace the other day from someone who is a fan of my work asking for permission to use one of my images as a tattoo.

i gave him permission, and the next day he and his friend got matching tattoos. they came out beautifully. here they are:

Hmm. Well here's a piece from my first chapbook...

A Party You're Not Invited To

If it's true what they say
about everyone having skeletons in their closet,
I'd like to believe mine
are dancing.

Swaying to the melodies of
Billie Holiday or Nina Simone or
maybe they're body rockin'
to funk and soul and
not a soul knows
except me.

I'll bet between
stone-washed jeans and a
vintage tee they're
waltzing to symphonies
and harmonies like
honeybees around a hive.

Perhaps their soft taps
are backed by a hip hop beat
from Common or Jay-Z
or Only God Can Judge Me.

Maybe it's classic rock like
Skynyrd,
The Doors or Stones
or Bad to the Bone
though it would be
so horribly literal.

They move
with hollow skulls and no regret,
rotting teeth and cigarettes.

They glide among my
hangers and shoes
insecurities and pride though
they have no eyes
so they really can't cry.

The ribcage is a stage and
their once-alive hearts
are steppin' to the beat
of all that moves and lives
and they live for torment and pleasure.

Envy doesn't get much better
than an array of joints
sharing a head nod and a
joint in remembrance of a
Marley song cuz we've all
done wrong but
every little thing's
gonna be alright.

Sometimes I think I
hear them whispering
in murmurs that sound like
almost-laughs and
I wish I was in on their joke.

Misery must really love company
because there are hundreds of them
drinking and clinking their cups to sin.

And even though we hold
so much disdain for one another
I don't know of any other
marrow that turns sorrow into celebration.

And one night when the world is
a chaos of bad dreams and
untucked sheets
I'd like to believe
amid a closet door creak
and bedtime feet
they'll let me in

...to dance.

For whatever reason, long after I read it, I thought about this poem at work today. And I think it's fucking brilliant. Shame on me for not saying that right after I read it.

an interpretation...

Also uncool is insinuating that I sleep with my students. That's some real career-ender type shit, and I take it pretty seriously...even though he IS a fucking moron. But I guess I'll leave it this way...I'll address the things he says directly and try not to START shit in other threads from here on out. There is so much great art in LA right now.

1) Dan Flavin exhibit at LACMA.

This is possibly my favorite LACMA exhibit ever. The ground floor has his large-scale light installations, including a lot of iconic stuff that doesn't often travel from private collections and also a bunch of stuff on loan from the Dia Foundation (which makes sense because LACMA's new director used to be at Dia). The upper level is more surprising small-scale sketches where you see him working through his concepts, and even some fairly traditional drypoints.

http://www.hi-res.net/blog/uploaded_images/neon-723657.jpg

http://photos4.flickr.com/5321715_4e95a138c5.jpg

2) Wack Feminist Art exhibit at MOCA at the Geffen Contemporary.

This is an important survey of art relating to the feminist movement of the 1960s forward. Although it's heavily weighted to American work, it does a good job of not over-privileging the biggies like Louise Bourgeois, Ana Mendieta and Cindy Sherman (although they are represented). MOCA's curatorial aversion to didacticism is once again present with a near complete lack of wall text of explanation for any of the works, which may be a problem for visitors who aren't already familiar with the art being exhibited, although MOCA's docents are a good alternative. The exhibition catalog is also exemplary. Like the Flavin show, this show will also be traveling nation-wide I believe, and is worth checking out if it comes to your city.

http://www.x-traonline.org/vol6_4/imgs/wilke_cover.jpg

http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/images/thumbnails/1988_130.jpg

3) Richard Tuttle exhibit at MOCA Grand Avenue.

This is a smaller survey of Tuttle's important works throughout his career. Although his larger minimalist sculpture is represented, the exhibit focuses on his more delicate ephemera including sculptures and drawings. These sorts of things tend to be hard to exhibit, and MOCA does an okay job, but they don't really do justice to his artists' books and printed work which are my favorite part of Tuttle's oeuvre. I liked this show well enough, but I actually found the other current exhibit up at MOCA Grand Avenue, on handmade aesthetic specifically in Latin American artists, to be more compelling with its mixture of playful materials like bouncy balls, carved lipstick and cut-up paper currency.

http://www.icaphila.org/exhibitions/past/images/enlarge/tuttle04.jpg

4) Culver City Art Walk

is happening this Saturday, noon to 8pm. 40-some local galleries are opening their doors to the public. Of those, the big-hitters include Blum & Poe (current exhibit up is Hirsch Perlman who does a strange combination of black and white seascape photography and large-scale silkscreens of cats), LAXART (showing upcoming LA-artist Vincent Johnson) and sixspace (showing the Fred Tomaselli-like collages of Karin Weiner). There's also an after-party with free drinks and a performance by Giant Drag.

So go see art this weekend!
