87 days away.

Let's face it, nothing would be better than Radiohead and Daft Punk The Smiths.

Have there ever been any ambient artists? Fennesz? Tim Hecker? Wiliam Basinski?
What's Brian Eno up to? Let's get that mother fucker on the phone.

And what about something mildly edgier? Throbbing Gristle was a little too weird for mass appeal, but MBV pushed things forward (if you want to say that) with 15 STRAIGHT MINUTES of harsh noise on the MAIN FUCKING STAGE.
So... Merzbow in the Sahara next year?
haha.

What about a great hardcore band like Melt Banana? The No Age pit this year proved that moshing is fun, even at 1:45pm in the desert...

Do Nas and Damian deserve that billing? Sorry I'd rather have him on the outdoor like PE's slot...by himself. Also not a fan of The Who as headliners...but what do I know. Other than that love it

My predictions:

David Bowie (I think it's the year)
Daft Punk
Arcade Fire

Other acts:
Sulfan Stevens or however you spell his name

George Clinton and Parliment Funkadelic (I will push this until it happens. Could you imagine George Clinton playing right before Daft Punk. Shit would be insane)

Street Sweeper
Queens of The Stone Age
Flying Lotus
Erykah Badu
The Whip
Balkan Beat Box
The Lions

Worth saying that, even if Arcade Fire are touring by then, and even if next album wins over that stubborn remainder of the human race, they're still not a lock for next year.

The way they paint it, touring in 2007 kicked the shit out of them, and I reckon they'll be cutting way, way back on the number of festivals they play this time around now that they can afford to be choosy.

Just a thought.

captncrzy
04-24-2009, 04:49 PM
I dunno about AF...I don't think they're going to have anything out by then. From what I understand, they aren't even recording anything right now. Maybe 2011.

MissingPerson

From what I gather, Win & Régine have been working since late last year, Cap'n, with breaks to do the score for Richard Kelly's thing, and visit the Partners in Health place in Haiti, and whatever. The rest of the band have been onboard since earlier this year.

Looking to have #3 at the end of this year, start of next one.

Thar you go. It would probably be more widely known if they did more English language interviews. :D

They got together to play the Obama party too, but Richard's made it clear they won't be touring again as Arcade Fire until the thing is recorded.

Ahh, yes, I like that poster, I'd be happy with it just because of Tally Hall on Friday. But they need to play at the out-door stage, or something.

And lets add:

Sublime
Spoon
Sloan
The Rocket Summer
Rufus Wainwright
Slightly Stoopid
The Polyphonic Spree
Panic At The Disco (after they took the "!" out of their name, they became wonderful, so shut up)
Metric
Ingrid Michaelson
Joshuan Radin
Schuyler Fisk
Imogen Heap
Flobots
Eels
City and Colour
Black Moth Super Rainbow
Ben Folds
Animal Collective
Aesop Rock

Ok, here's my suggestions...

- Daft Punk (sorry, ain't happenin')
- Eddie Vedder (no way he'd do a solo set along with Pearl Jam)
- Kings of Leon (they'll headline when they're next album comes out)
- Sigur Ros
- Friendly Fires
- The Avalanches (not next year)
- The Bloody Beetroots
- Shugo Tokumaru
- Murs (if he would've played, it would've been this year)
- Damien Rice
- Fever Ray
- Kylie Minogue (ain't happening)

+ Muse or Faith No More (as Saturday's headliner)
+ Blur (in KoL's spot)
+ Wilco (in Sigur Ros's spot)
+ British Sea Power (new album)
+ The Raveonettes (they kinda said they were playing next year)
+ Portugal. The Man (new album)
+ LA Riots (Sahara this time)
+ Little Boots
+ Vampire Weekend (new album)
+ Wolfmother (new album)
+ The Delta Spirit
+ Blind Pilot
+ White Gloves

* Switch Nas & Damian Marley w/ The Strokes
* Move Pearl Jam & Neil Young to Friday
* Maybe switch The Prodigy with The Chemical Brothers (Live) or Underworld. Think we missed out on The Prodigy
* The Dead Weather needs to be bumped up

That's all I can think of for now.

Great mix on your poster

Frightened Rabbit
Dodos
Grinderman (Believe new album out next year)
Elbow (should have been a must get this year...along with Deerhunter)
Lou Reed or Velvet Underground as Sub Headliner

Dont play with me, EVERYONE has them as a headliner. Well not everyone, just the fans.

And you would've had a great time with me up there at the killers. I didnt stop singing/dancing/jumping, and I had a feather boa and glow sticks that I passed around.

can we just have the killers headline a night every year?

I'm a fan, man, I've never ever pegged them as a headliner. I know they can headline (and have done) on this side of the pond, but I don't know enough about how they fly in the Colonies to make the call.

I mean, yeah, I'd like it. It'd make a good festival for me, and I know for a fact they'd give you guys a good time - despite your very best efforts. But headline or no headline, doesn't matter to me. Gee shucks, I'd just like them to be there.

On the other hand, y'know, Jack Johnson.

My main argument for the Arcade Fire headlining is that they were billed second on their day three years ago, how could they NOT headline next time around. But you know what, Yeah Yeah Yeahs were billed second (ended up being forth after adds) in 2006 and third in 2009, and they played an hour earlier in 2009 than they did in 2006.

And nobody can deny they've only gotten more popular since then. So yeah, Arcade Fire subheadlining again, especially under a big name, seems more than likely. They better fucking get 70 minutes though.

menikmati

Ok, more suggestions...

- David Bowie (let's not shit ourselves, it's never happening, EVER. The Who was more likely than David Bowie)
- The Arcade Fire (either GV will give them to APW or Bonnaroo will snag them)
- Hercules & Love Affair (don't think they'll be touring)
- Echo & The Bunnymen (see Modest Mouse below)

+ Underworld (as Saturday's dance headliner)
+ Monotonix (I agree with Rage, they'll be there)
+ Modest Mouse (replacing Echo. Echo seems like Underworld of '08, played APW the year before but not playing Coachella the year after)
+ Tiga

* I thought Diplo was a part of Major Lazer? So wouldn't it just be billed as Major Lazer?
* The Dandy Warhols need to be bumped up
* Eels needs to be bumped up
* Regina Spektor needs to be bumped up
* Riceboy Sleeps should be bumped down
* Neil Young made more sense under Pearl Jam than Lou Reed
* It's "The" Dodos
* Wilco should play the same day as Pearl Jam. Playing before Muse would be awkward
* Feist is not a subheadliner
* Needs a big dubstep name but I'm not familiar with the genre so I can't suggest one
* Needs a token latin band or two
* Had Craze & Klever as a group to remove but I guess they are playing, oops

Salah's right though. At some point you have to get people to the festival and with all the $$ spent on Price, they probably couldn't afford another massive headliner. So they went with someone who rounded out the bill with name recognition. My guess anyway.

1. Faith No More will play. I have not yet decided if they will be a headliner. My gut tells me they will not be.

Hate on me but Lou Reed should get the same billing as Cohen, like seriously. And I'm just wondering how Belle and Sebastian, Air, and Blur might fit on that poster

Other things that should be considered:
*Remove Arcade Fire and Feist, add Massive Attack and Air respectively on Friday
*Add The Prodigy on Saturday
*Wilco as second subheadliner on Sunday, then Pixies as the main subheadliner!

Regarding Pearl Jam: Has any one taken into account the fact that when PJ played empire back in '93 they were pelted with shoes and said 'never again.' Granted, it wasn't coachella, but...will they return to the scene of what they described as their worst experience ever?

Regarding FNM: They can and most likely will headline...if the money is right. Remember, they are playing festivals in Europe and haven't scheduled any U.S. dates.

PJ is still an obvious choice. They have a huge following, haven't played Coachella and like Paul T said, there aren't may headliners out there right now. '93 is a long time ago and I don't know the context of that shenanigan but I'm pretty sure something like that would be water under the bridge at this point. If nothing else it would be a great way to own the event, return and own the place it all went awry.

I'd love to see Stone Roses or Blur. I think Muse is a strong candidate and if recent history is any indication, Neil Young in definitely in contention.

I am hesitant to place more than one of the big three (Daft Punk/Radiohead/David Bowie) on the poster at the same time. It just seems too much like wishing than it is predicting.

That being said, there's a good fucking reason why that top tier is in such high demand, and an equally good reason why it's never gonna happen. Goldenvoice needs to think about longevity, and those three headliners will never, ever be topped. We need to face the terrible truth, people: Dreamchella does not make business sense.

Please excuse the tangent, you see, I am high as fuck.

What? Why?

From April's NME:

Elbow for giant Manchester homecoming gig
'It'll be the biggest show we've done' says Guy Garvey

Elbow are set to play a show at the Manchester MEN Arena on September 18 and then, according to frontman Guy Garvey, "disappear" from the live scene until they finish their next album.

The band are billing the event as a special homecoming show that has extra poignancy as the venue is located within a mile of Blueprint Studios, where they recorded their hugely successful latest album 'The Seldom Seen Kid'.

"It'll be the biggest show we've done," Garvey told NME.COM. "Then we'll disappear for a couple of years to work on a new record."

See the new issue of NME, out tomorrow (April 29), for the full interview with the Elbow man.

Tickets for the show go on sale on Friday (May 1).

I am going to interject on the Muse/Queen thing. If Radiohead an Queen had a bastard child it would be Muse. Some People hate Radiohead but love Queen and vis versa. So the combo is a little off putting to some, since they can be soo bombastic and pompous. But its all in good fun. I don't take Muse too seriously so I can enjoy their music. But I can be sure of this much, he DOES NOT bow to MJ. As far as Prince buying into the Radiohead brand, almost every major artist nowadays does, so that isn't so much of a shock. If Bowie did any covers it would be more along the lines of: Scott Walker, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, Radiohead, John Lennon, Jesus and Mary Chain, Syd Barret, Pink Floyd, Prince, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails, etc. I don't think Bowie himself was ever a major fan of Micheal Jackson...he respected him for sure but that's about it...and he only plays what he likes....

why did justice get to close out coachella in 2008 even after a legend like Roger Waters? They are on a major label now and have a great relationship with paul t. They'll get the hook up.

Add the relationship they have with the organizers of the event=main stage performance. Its not like its unheard of Tiesto played the main stage in 2007.

I thought we established that Daft Punk will not be touring next year.

Arcade Fire
Kanye West (in the tent) Massive Attack*Echo and The Bunnymen

Muse
The Pixies*Sigur Ros
MGMT

Pearl Jam
The Strokes *Justice (on the main stage)

that's what i'm going with right now.

When did we establish Daft wouldn't be there? Your list looks eerily similar to what I think was going to happen...though I think you can change out the stokes for Interpol unless the Strokes are actually working on something now....

Since when did Pixies get tossed into the rumor mill? I'd shit bricks while doing back flips if they were on the poster but still. Is this due to the string of Euro dates in fall?

Who knows with Underworld. They'd clearly be outstanding but have no real reason to play--read: no new material--outside of they're amazing and it's been a while.

Orbital make so much sense it's silly. They'll have toured the bejeezus out of Europe for their "reunion" without any shows stateside. Maybe an appearance in NYC and/or Ultra by Coachella. So yeah, they're perfect.

The Prodigy? They've clearly played a lot of shows in the US but haven't played any of the major US festivals and I'd see them again in a heartbeat--unless they're playing against Pixies :D

Fair enough. It's been a while and I wouldn't be shocked if they popped up on the poster. Certainly not the marquee EDM act though. They still kill it live, that's for sure.

And fack, now I'm really, really hoping for Pixies next year :( Even without any new material it's not like it wouldn't work. Seems as though there's been a lot of new additions to the Coachella fan base since 2004. Or maybe I'm trying to be uber optimistic. Either way, bring'em!!!!!!

If Sufjan Stevens plays ATP, I hope to god he plays Coachella.

Also just realized on the poster Sufjan is billed higher than The Flaming Lips. Is he really more popular? Also if he played would he be subheadliner or third liner?

I think you are dead on with the first 4 Marco. I could see a day being Muse-Faith No More and another being Pixies-Pavement. Each being headliners and sub-headliners respectively. That is, unless Coachella is Faith No More's first (and only?) appearance in the U.S., then I could see them headline. U2 wont be there though.

Faith No More leading into Muse sounds about right. I think Blur could headline if it is the only US show and someone big like Pulp played right before them, because so many people would come from the UK for that combination.

Why do you think Bowie has a good chance next year? Is it because of the rumours he has an album comming out next year? And why not about Arcade Fire? You think they will wait for 2011 and make them headline that year?
