View Full Version : 94/9 Independence Jam

Apparently 94.9 (an indie radio station in San Diego) is putting on Independence Jam which will feature:

The Black Keys
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Metric
Dead Confederate
and a bunch of local bands they claim don't suck.

It's only $30 and they promise no additional fees. Actually seems like it would be worth it. I might have actually found a reason to not hate this place. :thu

Also the bands should get a long set(at least an hour, except for Dead Conf. who only have one album). The local bands do kinda suck this year.

yup this show is selling out in 3-4 days for sure. So ridiculous, I remember the Keys show sold out in 2 days when they played the HOB in SD a year ago.

I'm sooooooo excited. Such a great Bonnaroo warmup fest.

I'll probably be up front for Dead Confederate --> Metric --> YYYs and then watch Black Keys from the bleachers, depending on how intense the crowd is, which is likely to be quite so.

allyjoy
04-22-2009, 10:04 PM
I would disagree Tall, YYY's new album is pretty damn good. You can't really compare the 2 because they are very different sounds.

I'm not even going to get into this YYYs vs Black Keys thing, to avoid flipping a bitch, but I was really surprised to see them billed first, especially considering how much more the Yeahs have been played on this very station in the last 8 years...

TallGuyCM
04-22-2009, 10:06 PM
True. I thought despite the backlash for the glossy production, the Black Keys' album was the best of last year. Followed closely by Portishead's album.

BTW, LA radio stations unashamedly have ripped off FM 94.9 for years. Anyone who lives in LA who listens to 100.3 "The Sound"..."it's all about the music." Where from the beginning 94.9 said "it's about the music".

Indie 103.1 miraculously came up with "Big Sonic Heaven" when 94.9 had "Big Sonic Chill" years ahead of time.

Sorry for being a bitch, I just get a little defensive about this... there is just a real wealth of great acts here that I personally find exceptional. And I feel like by saying what you said, perhaps you just haven't been opened up to a lot of great San Diego music that for the most part remains kinda hard to come across. But I'll just venture that's not the case becasue you do seem quite in-the-know.

Of course, I don't know your music taste, and I could see how if you're not into the certain math rock, post-hardcore, post-rock, and garage rock style-bands that this city has a great tendency to produce, that maybe you would indeed be a little disappointed with our city's output.

And yes, are venues are really nothing special. I wouldn't say they're utter complete shit though. The Casbah I imagine to be lovely, but I've never been allowed in. The Che Cafe is fucking awesome as well, but it definitely has its share of problems.

hawkingvsreeve
04-23-2009, 03:48 PM
Here is the thing. There have been good bands to come from the area, but I just find them few and far between. They are all either broken up now, or suck. After playing for the past years I have just become jaded. Not all bands are terrible per se, but of the ones that are just ok, none really capture my attention or interest, which means for me, everything is extremely mediocre. It's frustrating to play in that kind of environment. There is no inspiration, and there is no community. It may be different now, but if it is I haven't seen it.

The Casbah is another kind of element that is really mediocre/has been sort of ruined for me. Some of the shittiest shows I have seen in my life have been there, its always way too fucking loud (I know that sounds silly, but seriously, it's absurd and everything ends up sounding like shit, even through ear plugs), and over the past couple years it has become the place to be scene (see what I did there?) more than an actual venue. The only venue I enjoy going to now is the Belly Up. The sound is good, it's intimate, and it's far enough away that the hipsters cant ride their vespas to it.

Maybe I am an over complainer about it, but if you guys had a taste of what it was like before now, you may feel the same way.

I've been going to the Casbah for a long time now, and the sound can be loud sometimes, but not always. Also over the last year I have noticed people do tend to go there to be noticed, more so than seeing the band playing. Overall it does sound like you might be complaning a bit much though, there are enough decent bands out here. Also I agree with Hotcakes, I think it's more that the type of sounds coming out from SD right now aren't to your liking. Also are you going to mogwai next month?

Because it's only $30 and I have post-Coachella depression.

Pinback used to be really great, but have sort of nosedived, and are really really terrible live, or were when I saw them. I liked Rochelle, Rochelle a lot when they were around, and of course No Knife, who I think are the best band to come out of SD. The Modlins are ok but could be better with a lineup change. Swim Party is ok.

I think the bigger bands in SD are all shitty though. Never liked Scarlet Symphony, Dirty Sweet, Lady Dottie, Loius 14th, Convoy, etc. Seemed to be the same thing over and over.

UMMMMM. Yeah the seats will be there. They are made of Concrete. They are steps/giant concrete slabs to sit on all the way up. There are not usually seats on the "floor" section. But there are ALWAYS the concrete step/seats leading from the floor(beach) up to the 101(sidewalk). Not assigned seats or anything, but none the less, tierd seats with GREAT views.

I think these are the seats.

Below, ignore the seats on the floor. Those usually are not there. Look at the hat near the railing, closest to us in the picture. You can see they are sitting about 30feet up from the floor, which is the last row. This picture is taken from the sidewalk... hence the listen for free B.S. Cops will probly be moving people along there though. Maybe listen on the beach for free? Again, there will be a decent section roped off but yeah you will be able to hear from somewhere, just not quite as good.

Don't know if this got picked up already, but yeah... Big Sonic Heaven predates Big Sonic Chill by a number of years. Sorry.

Also sorry to the people actually paying to go see this. Granted, at least the lineup is better than last year with fucking Flogging Molly headlining, but if my Coachella experience taught me anything, it's that the Black Keys lose a lot in huge, stadium-like settings. Even if I was living in San Diego, the Keys and Metric would not be enough to get me to shell out 30$. Man this event's gone downhill the last two years, I mean in 07' you had Interpol, Kings of Leon and Spoon, in 2006 they nabbed the Flaming Lips. This is not an improvement.

Yes clearly your opinion is concurrent with everyone else's in this thread. Absolute disappoint with this meak little attempt at putting on a festival by 94/9. Thirty bucks is an incredible ripoff to see The Black Keys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Metric at such a visually unappealing and relatively oversized venue as this.

not too much. we have stella artois, widmer heff, and stone pale ale on tap. also wine and some various bottled beer. But we make damn good pizza, and there is a full bar at Henneseys about 30 feet away.

cool I love me some Widmer. Where are you located? I haven't lived up in north county since 99 so I have no clue where the sprinter station is. This seems like a fun idea though. I'm down.

Don't you ever get tired of being such a useless fucking idiot? All you do is whine and whine and whine about how no one plays Santa Cruz. You barely see any concerts at all because your pathetic ass doesn't have a car to drive the hour-plus it would take you to get to anywhere decent bands actually bother to play, and you're going to try and claim that The Black Keys performance this year suffered from the main stage? 15 bucks each to see them and the YYYs, and that's a shitty deal, huh? Two of the best live bands to come out of rock this decade, wow, what a fucking ripoff.

How much do you think tickets will cost for you to spend that night alone in your gross bed trying to lull yourself to sleep by counting all the people who don't like you?

true words. yeah the last sprinter leaving Oside is at 8:30, I have a feeling this is going to be a daytime thing just because most events at the pier are. theres couple bars around the pier, but you've gotta remember that downtown oceanside is a cesspool of drunk ass marines. once we get information on set times we can make a meet up time. My guess is we'll meet at URBN around lunch time probably. BTW if you've ever been to Basic in downtown, its the same thing just on a much smaller scale.

It just depends how they are going to do the two stages, I am not sure if they will play at the same time, or go back and fourth to eliminate setup times since its such a small place. I can try calling 94.9 to get as much info as possible, so we can decide what time this meet up will take place.

We really haven't planned any type of board meet up but it would be cool.

Looks like it is going to be pretty chilly. Having lived in Arizona for 5 years I am not use to the freezing cold in San Diego - I'll probably be in layers of clothing so posting what I'll be wearing is no use at this point since I have no idea.

Wow. I think Independence Jam was a success. It was a great time, GORGEOUS location, weather, energy, bands... terrific way to spend a Sunday and well worth the $30. If only 2 bands such as the YYYs and Black Keys were headlining Street Scene other than, well....

Sushy - my boyfriend was up in the front and telling me about the set lists - glad to see someone on the board got one and I def want to see it. He told me it was all scratched out and changed up...

Good to meet you Josh, it was pretty funny standing next to one another and thinking hmmm is that??? Would've loved to stay up close for the full Black Keys set but my little bro fell asleep LOL yes, he fell asleep... standing up... during The Black Keys. So we went to the steps and watched till the end from there.

I think this should be a weekly event :) Ok, I'll settle for monthly...

only complaints: stage was too low and no vegetarian food?? I'm a meat eater but my bro is not and trying to find something he could eat (since I thought he did more than just fall asleep) was impossible. Thank you to the Honest Tea gals for hooking me up with free teas.

i missed the apes of wrath, but my brother said they were great. saw the end of dead confederate, not really into them. creepy creeps were fucking AWESOME. i love the horror/surf rock vibe...super fun. i havent listened to much metric, but i really liked them, it was a fun, upbeat set. YYY's were my favorite of the night, they fuckin killed it. they played a really rockin set with a bunch of my favorite songs. i wish i was a little bit closer since the people around me werent dancing too much, but i was rockin out with my cock out anyway. black keys were awesome as always, even with a few technical difficulties.

Were any of you guys wearing a Coachella '09 shirt? i was a couple people behind someone with that on...

I saw so many people in Coachella 09 shirts and was tempted to ask if they were on the board but didn't since there were a lot. I was in my Coachella 08 shirt with Prince's symbol on the back but my hair was down most of the night covering it.

Josh, you weren't very far behind me during YYYs! I can see my hand up in the air recording and saw my brother in some of your clips. Posting mine below...

pancakes - your pictures are REALLY good! I love the ones at sunset - it is something that I missed being down on the floor but it looks like the view was spectacular :)

yeeeaaaah! Thanks for posting a Black Keys vid!

LOL that video of the crowd falling is pretty funny. We need to create some Coachella boardie call - like a bird call or mating call so we can find each other at shows. Egull - we were pretty close to one another in the crowd, would've been nice to meet! I ran into 4ransom completely by coincidence when we were standing next to each other. We're friends on myspace so he looked a tiny bit familiar but once I heard him yapping about Coachella I just knew it had to be him haha

so if its a mating call, do we have to fuck when we find each other?

haha, too funny. as soon as you chimed in i was pretty sure that was you too. but the question is, who was that other random dude who couldnt shut up about coachella?

haha, only if those doing the calling wish to mate - otherwise a friendly greeting should be acceptable.

there were quite a few people i spoke with that day that were all about Coachella, it was cool! That guy definitely was as gung-ho as any boardie though.
