This'll no doubt piss the U2 haters off, but that would be GREAT. It would give us a worthy Saturday headliner, and because U2 doesn't play ludicrously long sets, the overlap with Etienne De Crecy closing out the fest wouldn't be as bad.

I'm as disappointed with U2's current music as much as anyone else, but I've seen them before, and when they haul out the classics from War, The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby, they're a powerhouse to behold.

Couldn't Agree More with this quote...Leave Behind was Decent, Atom Bomb was disappointing, and No Line is really bad...but I'm an old fart ('43) whose caught most of the major live acts of the last three decades in their primes, as well as most of the name 60s & 70s acts that were still actively performing, and I can honestly say from my own experiences that no band on the planet now or in the past can match U2s power live when they're hitting on all cylinders with one of their classic 80s or 90s tunes...best arena band of all time.

Younger Hipsters are insane to be bitching about this inclusion if it happens...positively insane.

This is exactly the way i feel about things. I HATE their new music, personaly I believe they have ruined their reputation as one of the greatest artists of our time. But i will without hesitation say that their earlier works are and will forever remain classics. I would catch the begining of their set but if Etienne is closing up shop id want to get a decent spot.

U2 will be too busy teaching their new songs to the musicians that they hide under the stage to keep the guise of a four-piece running to play Coachella.

The 10th annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will open the 2009 festival season April 17-19 at Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, with headliners Paul McCartney, the Killers and the Cure. Last year, Coachella drew 151,666 people over three days and grossed $13.8 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Phillips says this year's Coachella is selling "almost neck and neck with last year," and he expects it to draw between 135,000 and 150,000 festivalgoers. Ticket sales for AEG's third annual Stagecoach Country Music Festival, set for April 25-26 at Empire Polo Field, are exceeding last year's pace, helped by a lower ticket price, Phillips says.

a good chunk of that 50K per day are there for the whole weekend. there's significant overlap in the attendees. but the article makes it seem like there's 150K UNIQUE attendees - that's just wrong.

Right, but then you don't word it as "150,000 attendees" because that is totally inaccurate. If you're going to write an article (which seems most "bloggers" can't properly do these days) at least get it right and written correctly....there's a huge difference between 150,000 attendees over 3 days, and 150,000 tickets sold for the weekend. I mean sure, 150,000 tickets are sold (counting 3 day passes - 3 tickets each) no argument there, but that surely does not mean Coachella had 150,000 attendees.....that is just completely wrong and stupid reporting/writing....this is not a hard concept to understand. Though considering some people who post here on the board, maybe it is.

considering they will run the barcode of 150000 then i think that to me means there are 150000 attending. Now if they only sold tickets as a set then i think you can say there are only 50000 attending because then will you know that every ticket is a group of three.

When Morrissey played the Palladium for 10 nights and you could buy a ten night ticket package it was still an attendance of 4400 each night whether you went to 10 nights, four nights or 1 night. (for a total of 44000...which i hear no shows were really sold out but i could be wrong?)

Do you understand between actual attendees and number of tickets sold???? It's apparent you do not. If I buy a 3 day pass, I'm not 3 different attendees...I'm ONE attendee. 3 tickets were sold yes, but there will not be 3 attendees, only one. This is not hard to understand. This is why all these articles and their "authors" are completely wrong (and retarded) when saying so-so festival has 150,000 attendees for the 3 day weekend. That's just totally inaccurate. How hard is it to actually write..."150,000 tickets were sold over the weekend, many as part of a weekend package allowing an attendee to attend the event all 3 days"?

its not hard to understand, but i think you are arguing just to argue because you are three attendees. just because you go repeatedly. Each day has a new tally schedule because tickest are sold individually. That is pretty simple.

Its not hard to write that but I am taking it from a journalists point of view that might not be concise enough.

Wow people whining so much about attendance accuracy when the real gripe should be "when do i get my damn set times"

sense, you're not making any of it

perhaps not, but i do have a point and the point is when we go we are divided into three people in their eyes. From the business side, when its all said and done they will not know to not count my saturday and sunday ticket to get the final attendance tally because I had a three day pass.

if that doesnt make sense then i tried and dont care to try anymore I just want my damn set times.

Blinken
04-13-2009, 02:39 PM
You are 100% right Menik, but it is not gonna change anything. They have been saying 160,000 attendees for years now, it is the way GV/AEG decide to release the numbers to the press. I have seen this reported in the LA Times last year and the year before in the same way. It makes investors happier to see the numbers this way, even it is a bit of a stretch. Makes the festival seem more important than it really is.

In their eyes, yes we each count as 3 people if we have 3-day passes. That's just for the business side. As a journalist (which I got my undergrad in), the person should really be reporting something like what Menik said. 150,000 over 3 days. That's more accurate than 150,000 attendees. We understand why GV counts us that way for business purposes, but that doesn't excuse the writer.
