Who was the very first act you saw at your very first Coachella, around noon or 1:30 or whenever you had had your fill with the fans or the energy bikes? Will you always remember this act as part of your Coachella experience or is it completely forgettable?

The Octopus Project popped my cherry on Sunday 2006. They came on at noon and were one of the few acts I saw outside of the mainstage. I called my girlfriend at the time, who had gotten me into them, while "The Adjustor" was playing and she got angry and impatient and hung up because she was so jealous.

That's when I knew how great Coachella was. (The Octopus Project needs to be invited back btw)

So who gave you your first memory and began your long road to obsession with the best music festival in America? Rogue Wave? Comedians of Comedy? The Killurz?

They were cool. I wanted to see Comedians of Comedy but my gf said she didn't want her first Coachella experience to be a comedy act. I sort of regret it, but I guess it was the right thing to do for her, and they were fun.

The Charlatans UK. They played the outdoor stage. It was strange taking that 2 hour trip and walking into this festival not knowing what to expect. After that performance, I was hooked. It now feels like my vacation home in the desert.

My sister took me last year for the first time and we got there mid afternoon Friday, She just grabbed my hand and took me from stage to stage, I had no clue who we were seeing during the day. I do vaguelly remember sitting in the Sahara tent though waiting for someone to come on for our first act we seen. I will have to ask her who it was. I was just so in awe of all the people and the wonderfulness of everything, I think the first 3 hours were spent in a daze.

Same here. I honestly had NO idea what expect from Coachella. Some friends just invited me and I happened to stumble upon the MIdnight Juggernauts as the first band I saw. Never ever even heard of them and figured they'd be some gay rock band. But long behold it was a small preview of diversity of Coachella artists and I got along with people in the crowd because they are just so chill. TWAS NICE.

The very first act I heard was either Flosstradomus or Brother Ali on the Mainstage in 07. But it was later in that Friday at some point during The Arctic Monkeys>Felix Da Housecat>Benny Benassi that I realized I would do everything in my power to make every future Coachella possible. So it took roughly 5 hours for Coachella to hook me for life, not bad :thu

But I *remember* seeing Wolfmother early in the day... Maybe it was She Wants Revenge? Or Ladytron? Fuck. I can't remember... It was one of those, tho! Isn't it?! It's nothing specific, it's just different from any old show, or even any old festival. Seeing something epic early in the day is the greatest because then you're pretty much set for the rest of the day to only get better.

In 2006 I spent the majority of the day camped out at the Coachella Stage waiting for Tool with my friend. I will never do that again (well, probably not), because the next year I realized how great it can be to just chill in the shade in the beer garden and listen to an act that you're not that adamant about seeing (Mika, Fountains of Wayne, Kings of Leon, The Feeling). Good to save your energy for 4pm Explosions in the Sky shows.

Mine was Erase Errata in 04. They were one of the bands I was looking forward to a lot (although by then i had already seen them 4 times). They didnt stand out as much as like Basement Jaxx or The Pixies but they were great. I think they were on like at 12:30 in the Gobi...however I could be wrong.

Mine was in 06. After a long wait to drive in and a clusterfuck camping set-up (all the workers were telling everyone the campground was full and that even if you had tickets, you couldn't come in--does anyone remember that shit?)...

Walked up to Kanye West doing the Cabbage Patch while he sang A-Ha's Take On Me.

Suitably surreal, I think, considering how amazing and weird each Coachella experience has been since then!

Edit: Realized this sounded like I thought Kanye or his performance were amazing. Not so. Surreal and then the true cherry-popping came when Franz Ferdinand took the stage and I realized Coachella had begun and I was hooked.

Morrissey 1999. It was sundown. Mainstage was where the entrance is now located. No introduction, which at the time seemed very odd. Ive been used to awful kroq dj's introducing every bad ive seen. Walked in and @ the time Moz had cancelled so many shows and my friends and i were kind of worrying where we at the right stage? Would be actually playing? Things were very diffrent in those days and i cant ever remember having a setlist of performers/or times. And then for only the second time in my life, The man of a million wet dreams (as the NME has called him) Morrissey appeared. Cant really remember much except as soon as it was over The Chemical Brothers were on stage and there was so much space we walked right up to the front ( I think everyone that day was there to see Morrissey and as soon as he was over the Mexican Moz Contingent cleared) within a 4-5 hour period i saw Morrissey, Chemical Brothers, Half of Beck ( i can remember him playing "Debra" ) and an Underworld set that i swear stretched to two hours. I dont think it was Magical until hindsight. I think as a 19 year old i felt entitled to such awesomeness. But now i feel Blessed..

Now 2001 with St. Germain doing Soul Salsa Soul was when i realized this "Coachella" thing would be life changing.. and i was right..

same for me... he actually opened up both '06 and '07 as the 1st act at Coachella both years. But my 1st year was '06.

I probably shouldn't have seen him. He's good. In fact he owns. But he's from Minneapolis on the Rhymesayers label and can see him a good 3-4 times/year if I wanted to. So I should've taken a chance with someone else and branched out. I just went who I was comfortable with, and he tore it up as usual.

we drove from l.a. @ 6am-ish and got the parking lot ~9am. we waited and endured the heat til they opened the gates at noon. i was so grateful for the bottle of water the gave to everyone. since we were some of the first people in, we asked for two and thet gave 'em to us. this is the very first memory i have fo coachella.

as far as artists go, we went to the dance tent for some dj-science sessions or something. i'll go home look up the book and tell you.

but the first act i remember watching was cibo matto. they were so cute! "i know my chicken. you gotta know your chicken!"

then, i started going in really late. i think i went in at 6pm in 2006. never again. now, i try to make it in around 2ish, but the heat - oy!

bu twith this year having wristbands, i can go to the car for a nap and eat my free prepared food - yay!
