So... anyone stoked for this? Any rumors making their way across the blogosphere/intarwebz/whatever the fuck you want to call it? If the festival is configured like the last two years, with an "eletronic" night and an "indie" night, I'm hoping that we get MSTRKRFT and Franz Ferdinand from Coachella at the least... maybe the Flaming Lips?

I really wanted to go last year, but it would have been too expensive with transportation and accommodations. I am hoping to hit a new festival this year, and Treasure Island, Street Scene, and APW are the likeliest of candidates.

the electronic day last year was one of the most fun days of music I've ever been a part of, I think the only musician who didn't completely impress me was Goldfrapp, and I still enjoyed her

BlackSwan

They haven't even announced the dates yet.

I did have a horrible premonition today that MSTRKRFT would headline though, so I really hope I'm not right, like I was last year about Justice.

I still need to get to T.I. and Sasquatch

I really have no idea who they'd get to headline this year though
chemical brothers live maybe for the electronic day?
and maybe Flaming Lips for the indy day

Electronic day was tight last year, I'll probably go again. I like that they separate it into Day I Want To Attend / Day I Do Not Want To Attend too.

Wheres the beef?

Unless Tool, Prodigy, Orbital, Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers (live), or someone at that level is playing, I am skipping TI this year.

I was thinking Orbital, but they are not available the weekend Treasure Island usually is...

Basement Jaxx or Groove Armada (Live) would be perfect.

THIRD INSTALLMENT IN MID-OCTOBER

Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment have announced the third annual Treasure Island Music Festival will take place on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2009. Saturday will feature two stages of electronic and dance oriented acts and Sunday will feature a compelling line up of national and local indie rock artists.

This two-day boutique music festival will continue its tradition of providing a strong, diverse musical lineup smack-dab in the middle of the San Francisco Bay on historic Treasure Island. There will also be interactive activities for the audience, including a 60-foot tall Ferris Wheel, an interactive arts/vendor village featuring local designers, and an array of healthy and affordable food and beverages.

"We're thrilled to once again bring a pirate's booty of musical treasures to the island in the Bay,” says Kevin Arnold, founder of Noise Pop. "The third edition of TIMF promises to be the best yet as we present another action-packed weekend of premier indie and electronic talent and myriad other diversions in what we think is the most majestic festival setting in the world."

Full performer line-up and on-sale information will be announced early this summer.

I have this strange feeling the TI is going to totally blow this year, as seems to be the case with fellow festivals of that size (in the vein of Detour), but I would really like to go to this now that I know that it's in October... which is, for all intents and purposes, a fine time of year to hold this for me...

NOISE POP AND ANOTHER PLANET ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCE 3rd ANNUAL TREASURE ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL TO TAKE PLACE OCTOBER 17TH & 18TH 2009

April 8, 2009 San Francisco, CA — Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment are pleased to announce that the third annual Treasure Island Music Festival will take place on Saturday October 17 and Sunday October 18, 2009. Saturday will feature two stages of electronic and dance oriented acts and Sunday will feature a compelling line up of national and local indie rock artists.

The Treasure Island Music festival is organized by the producers of the Noise Pop Festival, one of the nation’s longest-running independent music festivals, and Bay Area based Another Planet Entertainment, an internationally renowned independent concert producer. The Treasure Island Music Festival has been called a “full blown love affair” by SPIN.COM. The SF WEEKLY declares that the festival boasts “an impressive lineup with bands from all over the world.” PASTE MAGAZINE proclaimed that “for the second year in a row, a 70-year-old, man-made island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay was home to some of the finest live bands in the country.”

Hello, greetings from Seattle.

Here is my wish list for Treasure Island 2009, which I'll be attending. >:)
In no particular order:

The Donnas
My Bloody Valentine,
Sonic Youth
Jokers Daughter
The Prodigy
Los Campesinos
Mute Math
!!!
Lily Allen
Crystal Method
Backyard Babies (These guys would be great for a festival)
B-52's
Detroit Cobras
Girl In A Coma
The American Professionals
Filastine
Underworld
Nathalie Portmans Shaved Head

I can't think of anymore at the moment. A lot of these bands, (except for a few) are already touring the festival circuit, and with TI being so late in the year, I think there's a good chance we could see a number of these acts on the TI lineup, just to end their festival touring year on a good note. I'm sure there will be a good representation of some Bay area talent.
There's a lot out there.

Till we get the lineup, I'll see ya at Sasquatch. (probably not)

PS. I too noticed that TI's site was replaced with Go Daddy?? What ever.
I think it may be back up?.

Cheers

You act like that was the press release's main content. I think they just tacked that on at the end of the email about Noisepop events and Wanderlust just to keep the Treasure Island name in the average reader's mind.

Right. I was (perhaps not obviously) wondering if this is something they already fully released, ie, only electronic/dance acts on Saturday. I have not been following TI very carefully this year because it seems like it's going to be underwhelming.

I trust TI, will have an equally impressive lineup as last year, or better. Probably better...? More people are finding out about it. Has anyone checked out the lineup for ACL this year. It's pretty good.

You missed DJ Shadow>Gotan Project>Thievery Corporation in the middle of the bay for that? I don't get why people like Tycho. Everything I have heard sounds like a more repetitive Boards of Canada rip-off.

First of all, I had recently seen DJ Shadow twice and the Thievery Corporation from like front row and I had to take money into consideration and the fact that my wife doesn't like any of those artists (all of whom she has been "forced" to see with me).

I don't find Tycho to be repetitive at all, plus his live show is great. You should definitely check him out sometime, I can almost guarantee you will like his show.

Tycho's music is pretty and I don't really think that he sounds like BoC at all, but if you think so, there are certainly worse bands to sound like. Tycho's music goes really well with his graphics and the visuals at his shows. It kind of glorifies the 70s and early 80s in a non-barf inducing way.

Really? At all? Listen to "Sunrise Projector" by Tycho, and then listen to "Sunshine Recorder" by Boards of Canada. If you don't hear any similarity, I must be going crazy. That's just off the top of my head. I am going to investigate this further, I may have written Tycho off too quickly.

I dunno, I think that those song names are more similar than the songs themselves. The bass is different and more pervasive in the BoC song. Yes they both have random vocal samples, but I believe that they are sufficiently different.

I agree to an extent. What I was trying to get at is hard to pin down. There are no exact "rip-off" moments, but an overall aesthetic similarity. Like Tycho listened to everything by Boards of Canada and Ulrich Schnauss and then combined their styles into something similar to both.

Another example of how I came to this conclusion:

Saw9JIp6Kgw

mAoLaE-QkJ0

Listen to the vocals in each. Sounds like the same voice. I maybe reaching, but it's what I hear.

The great thing for me about your response was that it made me go back and listen to Tycho and now I'm enjoying it.

1) School of Seven Bells will be playing the Casbah on October 4th. If they do play Treasure Island, are they going to go elsewhere after and then come back to California two weeks later? Weird. I am guessing this means no but they will be in SF a week or so before TI.
2) no dates for Asobi Seksu, but they are a Windish artist now apparently, and Windish is good at leaking info so keep checking
3) Mono is listed as available for Fall 2009 headlining/support availability. TI or not, I need to see them. Hope they play Com(?) because that is truly epic.
4) St. Vincent will be touring again September-November according to Billions.
5) Bon Iver for one offs/festivals this fall (billions)
6) Joanna Newsom - Sept-Oct - TBA (billions)

though I agree with you on MSTRKRFT/MGMT, I don't think the promoters are going for the Mega-headliner. the Flips would be special, but they aren't trying to be the biggest band on the planet, so Treasure Island seems fitting. this is still a pretty small scale festival, so having huge acts should never be expected.

MGMT is 4th on the Bestival 09 line up:

Fleet Foxes
Doves
Seasick Steve
Klaxons
Lily Allen
Bat for Lashes
Soulwax
2manydjs
Michael Nyman
The Beat
Carl Cox
Squarepusher
Future Sound of London

MSTRKRFT and Girl Talk were also on the third line of the Coachella poster this year.

Last year MSTRKRFT played before Moby at BFD making them a 2nd tier headliner of the Subsonic Tent.

Actually here is a better question... Do Thievery Corporation (07) headline festivals? Does Justice (08) have any business headlining festivals?

Yeah I want to finally go to this festival, even though I've heard bad stories about it, looks like fun, hope the line up gets leaked soon...

July 19th - Monotonix, Health and No Age play the Treasure Island Music Festival (myspace/pitchy)
Aug 23rd - Ted Leo plays the Treasure Island Music Festival (pollstar)
Oct 17th and 18th - The date of the Treasure Island Music Festival

This seems peculiar to me.

July 19th might be the date of lineup release?

because.... someone is stopping you from walking in 20 minutes before the flaming lips begin??

Wheres the beef?

Well, clearly having a poor spot for the flaming lips would be out of the question. Therefore, sitting all day reserving a good spot is the only way to go. Why can't you follow the logic?

If it's flaming lips, I'm there, I've been wanting to see them for a while and alway miss my chance...

Go to slide, right next to Rubysky that is fun, but I do need to check out rubysky...

flaming lips would be the biggest & best treasure island headliner yet.

They both sorta suck, l go wherever has the better DJs, which is most often Ruby Skye. I then head over to the End Up to close out the evening with some quality house music.

If Tool was there I would make it my mission to get my wife to accept this Fest as his her Birthday present...too bad they won't be there, just not the right vibe for TI.

Yeah... I honestly doubt Tool is happening. Treasure Island is more fun-sized than that.

I can totally see Tool playing a 10,000 person festival. It's still 1997, right?

Now there's a loaded statement :D Truthfully they have some of the best house music in town. Plus, they allow you to smoke in the grotto and there are always strange and hilarious conversations to be had there.

Isn't it though? Sounds like my kind of place. But not to spite hypocracy, I do frequent Neighbors. It's the most enjoyable dance floor I've found around here.

Not to mention I'm going to try and get the OAK Underworld crew to after party there. Open until 6am right?

We have heard good things about the Transcendent Church of Bass, so we are planning on checking that out sometime soon.

On the weekends they don't really close, they just start serving alcohol again, which we've done there a few times.

I'm going have to look into this Transcendent Church of Bass.

And start serving again at 6am? That could get really sloppy. I'm intrigued.

We are thinking about replacing the ORB :( show with a live OTT and Pitch Black show there on June 13th.

1015 is better because it has stripper poles.

Come for the house music... stay for the danger of getting shot.

Aesop Rock and N.A.S.A are playing Treasure Island on August 16th. Just to add to confusion of things.
