There is a lot of busy-ness with the graphics up in this. I can't tell what is unread and I want to hide these smilies and I don't see a place to.

By the titles of the threads, there's two columns, one I gather says if I've posted in that thread, the other has sometimes a frown face sometimes a piece of blue paper?

I am hoping to design graphics that match the site, like we did with the old site. havent gotten to that yet. these are the default graphics.

on my computer i can tell whats not read because the not read stuff is
1. closer to the top
2. the font is bolder until i click on that thread.

we're still figuring stuff out. feel free to try things to see what they do. hover your mouse over, or click on things. everything is going to seem weird at first.

If you go up to "Quick Links" and "Today's Posts" it will show all the threads you haven't read or have been updated since you last read them.

airzero23

the first column is whether you've posted in the thread, there are new messages, or it is just an old thread
the second column is an icon you can choose for your post located just above the Submit Reply button. (see i selected a green smiley)

airzero is talking about the Post Icons. The "Post Icons" are just below the entry box I am using right now.

You used a piece of paper as your Post Icon, I use that when I write too much.

I'ma gonna use a light bulb this time.

yeah. i don't understand why everything is stacked this way. look at all that horizontal space between the username and join date/post count. is there a way to move the subject and time/number of the post into that space? does that make sense? you know? the yellow bar above your username and the red bar below it with the subject in it. those suck.

edit: when i went to post this, it didn't give me a "quick reply" option. then i noticed this got bumped to page 2 of the thread. does that always happen when it's at the end of a page?

WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH UNCOOL.

edit: i just edited this to type the part about the quick reply thing. i didn't add a "reason for editing" and when i saved it, it didn't say it had been edited. i'm doing it again now.

how many posts does it take to turn to page 2? i can set that, i tried to set it higher.
You can either use the forum default or pick 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40. It's in the User CP under Edit Options. I don't feel like counting what the forum default is. OK, that is a lie. But I'm gonna resist because, damn, I think I'm going to go on too long as it is.

But that's not what the complaints were about. The issue was that with all the other things going on the actual text of the posts doesn't jump out at you on the page. It's partially the color scheme (which will change) but also the large bars (currently a yellow and a dark brown/black) and all the images and buttons for the features (like quoting and quick reply and such) and plus some people had YouTubes in their sig and such.

Right now I'm not entirely certain how to fix that other than with the color scheme and maybe going with less busy buttons/icons/images for the features.

If the idea is to stick with the three horizontal bar system I'd make the most eye catching bar the one with the text. Or at least corral the eye-movement better. Let me step back and go through that:

Currently a post has a yellow bar (with the time/date stamp on the left and the post number on the right) followed by a brown/black bar (with the avatar, username on the left and join date etc on the left) and then the maroon bar (first with the post title and then, finally, the text etc of the actual post.)

When you look at the page the thing that jumps out is the yellow bar. This neither contains the text nor immediately precedes it and thus it confuses.

Put another way the eye is drawn to the yellow bar and then since the yellow bar is mostly blank - which is a good thing if done this way - the eye is drawn upwards (to a separate post) because the maroon is lighter than the brown/black bar. The movement is the wrong way.

So my solutions/suggestions: either switch to a two bar format (as suggested elsewhere, consolidate the information currently on the yellow and brown/black bars) or have the colors go from bright (the small bar at the top of the post) to medium (the medium bar with the username and avatar) to dark (the bar with the post text) so that the it makes more sense to the eye. Maybe a stronger post border would help too. Also maybe more wasted space on the right and left (especially if the background color is a good contrast for the post box color) would help the eye focus on what is important.

The irony of this post is that since I've carried on for so long it'll be easier to see and thus it would seem to dilute (or at least falsely suggest an alternate and counterproductively unrealistic solution) the points I'm making.

Other than my post this page (using the default settings) is a good example of what will happen a lot; a lot of short posts making the page more difficult to parse. And sometimes a post with just a smiley is entirely warrented. And often just a sentence or two is plenty especially for those more pithy than myself.

It's getting better.

I would like it if our avatars didn't change retroactively, it's fun to see the old avatar that people had when they first posted. Also, I don't like how the titles of threads can't be edited/renamed. For example, I would like to rename this thread to make it something else but I CAN'T.
