That's odd about security, they never searched my friends and I either day and my friends had backpacks.

All in all, I had a great time!

I also love the fact that you can walk everywhere from your hotel if you are in the downtown area!

I'm so glad it's back on the streets where it belongs.

What's this California Burrito SSPUs was talking about?

its a carne asada burrito with french fries inside it. I didn't realize this was a San Diego thing...

I had never heard of it and then I looked on the web and saw it on a bunch of restaurants menus in SD but wasn't sure what it was.

Thanks for the info, until this last weekend I had never heard of it!

I would agree with this, except that PE put on such a great show that it was worth it.

I must secretly confess to you that I did stay for their whole set, even if it was just to absorb the spectacle that is Flava Flav.

A post on another forum noted that Flava wears a huge clock on his chest, but still has a problem keeping time. Go figure.

I got the feeling Of Montreal was doing a flying sound check, as mic and sound levels seemed to change during the first few songs in the set.

Thanks in advance!

You'll probably get so many differing opinions here, but I like Santana's (http://www.santanas.com/)

SDsoldier7
09-02-2009, 09:49 AM
Ortegas in La Jolla.

Super Sergios off clairemont mesa blvd.

Alibertos in poway.

there is a mexican shop at every corner in san diego, but there is a vast range in quality and taste. these 3 are good to go, and i would drive out of my way to go to either one. dont forget the horchata to drink either. or pina.

You'll probably get so many differing opinions here, but I like Santana's (http://www.santanas.com/)

Santanas is cool. plus they are open 24hrs. the ones i reccomended use homemade tortillas and their guac is always the freshest green.

I like El Indio

sames44
09-02-2009, 10:10 AM
El Indio is the best taco shop ever. Never been to the Santana's in San Marcos, that's really gross - I can only speak for Point Loma, Sports Arena, PB & Hillcrest.

I will have hit up some of these places on my next trip.

So when I was driving around I saw a place called, "California Burrito" and "California Taco Shop". Are those just poser places?

This is almost like all of the restaurants in and around LA who carry Tommy's like burgers and fries.

Sexecutioner
09-02-2009, 12:05 PM
santanas claims they invented the cali...not sure if thats true or not though. they used to be the bomb, but their quality has gone way downhill in recent years. lolitas is where its at, their carne is the shit. they started out down south in chula and bonita, but now they also have locations in clairemont and downtown. i highly recommend them.

didnt know carne asada fries had been around that long. only noticed them on menus like in the last 5 or so years, but maybe i just wast paying attention. doesnt matter cuz nachos are highly superior anyway.

sames44

truth - you gotta have the crunch

PJandBompton
09-02-2009, 12:25 PM
Don't go to Santanas...it's a chain and quality is low...

If you are by Super Sergios just skip it and go to Robertos...open 24/7 and good as FUCK...that is the spot for me and the friends after concerts or the club

sames44
09-02-2009, 12:26 PM
Roberto's is a chain as well.

hawkingvsreeve
09-02-2009, 12:27 PM
Not to mention there are probably 359782930573096583652 "Roberto's" named places in San Diego.

sames44
09-02-2009, 12:30 PM
Higoberto's, Adalberto's, Alberto's, Humberto's...the 'berto's list goes on and on. I think it's a conspiracy.

Robertos is a chain by the name but they don't all use the same recipes like Santanas...the one off Cl. Mesa is very very good

09-02-2009, 01:09 PM
El Indio's the best I've been to. Been around for a long ass time. Such good tortilla chips they make.

Lolita's used to be good. It's gone downhill after the last two years. I haven't been to the one by Petco Park yet though, maybe they are better.

Would you thread jackers please get yer heads out of yer stomachs!

I loved Bassnectar, but got a little bored with the constant 110 bpm (approx.). Just when I thought a song was going to break loose, it just stayed the same. Sorta squelched my roll. The salvation was in the fact that the bass was so strong that my sinuses, lungs, and body hair were vibrating and tickling.

SDsoldier7
09-02-2009, 07:03 PM
i here ya on that dharma. i kind of felt the sameway at juju beats. it was a good set if you wanted some straight up bass music. i like sets with a good balance however.

Overall I have to say that Street Scene and my time spent in San Diego, Gas Lamp, Mission Beach, were my best weekend all summer. SS '09 was superior to LA detour '08. I just hope all the financials get worked out, and everyone gets paid, and we can all do it again in '10!

You guys are all fucking high if you think El Indio and/or Santana's are even remotely good. Neither is anything in Old Town.

For sushi, I highly recommend Sushi Deli #1 on Washington st.

And if you dont want to wait outside like the others, go next door to CJ's. Better yet, do what I did, and get your food to go from sushi deli and eat it at CJ's.

Be sure to get the Tuna Poppers. Worth a trip to San Diego just by themselves.

The fucking microbrewery is the place to be! Taste 5 different brews for 10 bucks plus most of these breweries give out plenty of extra tastings! I came out of there fucked up! Great way to cap the night.

Walked by Girl Talk and it was terrible, shitty played out songs being mashed up. Disgusting. I actually thought I caught Calexico on Saturday, but I guess I did catch them on Friday while in the microbrewery. I heard what I wanted and went to catch Black Eyed Peas and they were pretty good. It's not my fault you missed the Dead Weather and your highlight ends up being fucking Girl Talk. That's embarrasing.

My friends all worship Girl Talk. And I mean they seroiusly worship the dude. "Greg Gillis is my hero." Their most looked-forward-to act of Friday at Coachella last year. It's insane. (These are people with otherwise great taste in music not dissimilar to my own.) Two of them are aspiring DJs though, and that's a big reason why. I can see how he might be a genius in that particular field. I still just don't fucking get it though, I'm glad the majority of the board here agrees.

Also, SDsoldier really makes me A) want to move the hell out of San Diego (not notable) and B) never want to smoke weed again (quite notable.) An interesting board member.

Saying Girl Talk was your fav. on friday is reasonable. It's an hour-hour and a half of straight up partying. It feels like going to a house party, and dancing around and drinking with all your friends. I think being a DJ, or going to a lot of hiphop house parties will make you appreciate what Girl Talk does. Tommy, that is a big reason I like him. His hip-hop selection is solid for me, it's the party records that make people dance and go nuts. Being a DJ, and what doing what Girl Talk does is not as easy as you might think it is. I want a lot of the people who talk bad on Girl Talk to give Djing a shot, see if they can get people dancing. Being a DJ isn't all about playing songs you love, you have to play to the crowd. It's an art. This is not saying Girl Talk is the best, but he certainly does not suck.

See, that is a perfect description of what makes him good, you're much better at explaining him than my friends have ever been. I do understand that it's just partytime music, which I usually can enjoy (but am not partial to), I've just never wrapped my head around the intellectual or artistic value behind the guy's work that they claim. The only attraction I have ever had to his music is that "house party" vibe that you bring up, which I definitely think he's great at.

Seeing him live was pretty lame for me (Bonnaroo)... but maybe I just caught a bad set, not to mention I was all alone. It's pretty easy to see how one person could have more fun at his set than anyone else's at a festival.

There are plenty of other djs I'd rather listen to than girl talk. It's a personal taste thing for me.

As a turntablist I can appreciate what mash-up DJ's do. It's not easy. At all.

But all Girl Talk does live is get drunk and push a button on a laptop.

I like all the positive feedback about Dungen at the Street Scene. they were amazing at the Troubador. I regret missing them at Coachella 2006. The lead singer of DUngen has an interesting sense of humor.

I couldn't agree more. And you know how we know he pushes a button? That damn shitty visualization shit he had going on. It was perfectly in sync with whatever the fuck he was doing.

Oh another reason why girl talk sucks...I can't dance to that music. All I can do is hop up and down. If I truly want to dance, I need some electro. To each their own I guess

I would love to see Dungen at a small venue like the Troubador, and I got the feeling the guys would rather play in a dark intimate place more befitting their music. All the members really projected a lot of that unique Nordic personallity. My wife said the guys looked like they were starving hipsters and she wanted to feed them. I suggested she save the food for the lead singer of Deerhunter.

i'm not saying girl talk doesn't just push a button, because i really don't know one way or the other, but i will say that it IS possible to do live mixing (and even scratching) that's perfectly synced to video. it's just a matter of software. check out coldcut or dj yoda sometime.

This is true. See Cut Chemist in The Dome circa 2007.

This one goes out to Rob Hagey, who owes me $41,000 for playing Street Scene in August.

I do not expect SS to come back next year.

As if it was bad enough...

According to a letter received by our parent company, Southland Publishing, Rob Hagey Productions (aka Street Scene) is liquidating its assets in order to pay an estimated $2.8 million owed to creditors (full disclosure: CityBeat’s among those owed money) and an undisclosed amount owed to former employees. This isn’t bankruptcy; rather, it’s what’s known as a General Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors. According to the letter—from San Diego Credit Association—General Assignment is “an option to filing a Chapter 7 liquidation in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.” The letter goes on to say,

[I]t was determined that it would be in the company’s and its creditors’ best interest to execute a General Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors rather than seek Chapter 7 Bankruptcy relief. Bankruptcy liquidation is generally associated with lengthy, cumbersome and expensive administrative proceedings which reduce and delay recoveries to creditors.

In the last three months, two Street Scene contractors, Southern California Sound Image and Kleege Industries, filed lawsuits against Rob Hagey Productions alleging breach of contract.

I’ve sent an e-mail to Rob Hagey and his son, Riley, who oversaw production at this year’s event.

Update: I just received an e-mail from Rob Hagey:

As you know we had a very tough year. The attendance dropped below 50% of what we had anticipated for Street Scene. So the loss was substantial for my company, Rob Hagey Productions. I have had to close my account as my company is completely insolvent. I have transferred all monies to San Diego Credit Association well below the debt owed to everyone. They will act as the appointed trustee for the betterment of all the creditors including SD City Beat related to Street Scene 09. I have worked in the music business for over thirty years (producing Street Scene for 25 of those years). So this is a life altering time, something that hurts me deeply as I’m very passionate about music.

That's what happens when you have the Black Eyed Peas as the anchor to your festival. That is too bad for Hagey.

we now know why...looks like Hagey was using the BB money to try and cut losses...
