dude, not parking in the lot means you are walking pretty far. considering the show costs 7 bucks, paying a little for parking isnt a big deal. and i have never seen them just let anybody in without paying for admission, but then again, i have never shows up near the end of the actual races. if you are going to the track, i highly suggest making a day out of it and betting on some ponies. that shit is fun. for saturday shows i usually hang in the infield, which isnt as good of a view of the track, but there is a cool area to hang out and drink beer and still make bets and watch the races. they also have a little micro brew fest there, but the lines get long. might want to skip the last race though to get a good spot for the show, which is also in the middle.

yeah, don't bother trying to avoid parking. you're still only paying $10 for a Flaming Lips show.

08-03-2009, 12:32 PM
Every year except for last year you could walk right in at about 7 o clock for free. They would just open the gates and not check anyone for anything. And I always park for free there, it's about a 5-10 walk, easily worth it
That70sdesperado
08-03-2009, 06:14 PM
You can easily find a spot along Via de la valle near the solana gate entrance or on the side streets. Only like a five minute walk. And i heard they have been charging for the shows, even if the races have ended. It's like 6 bucks. I'll be there for the lips for sure.

enough about flaming lips, lets get back to Street Scene. So it looks like no replacement. Is anyone going to rebut that or do we all finally agree

this isn't LA man, the reason it's only modestly selling is because are so laid back around here. People wait until the week of, or sometimes day of. Many of my friends are going, but they are waiting to buy tickets until the day of. I'm sure it's the case for many other people. Also, no new info to post. I have to include myself in that category of people.
And as far as lack of adds, I think the bands that would attract SD crowds and any other crowd to be honest have already been booked for that damn Reading and Leeds Festival.

i saw matt and kim with cut copy and they put on one of the best live shows. they're so much fun, energetic, and they smile 95% of the time (which might sound retarded, but it's infectious). and they have hilarious banter between songs. i'd recommend anybody to see matt and kim. i just hope they don't conflict with cage the elephant, deerhunter, or girl talk.

That sucks that the discounted tickets are over, I never saw it. That was pretty much the only way I was going to buy tickets. Pretty sure I'll just skip out on it now. DM specifically said they aren't rescheduling any canceled shows because their tour is too tight.
As for all this extra money people are talking about.
Even if the price is higher because of the Beasties, I don't think they sold nearly enough tickets to actually make all this extra money that people are talking about.
Didn't someone post that ticket sales are way down.
If you go to this and it's half empty like Detour last year then they obviously didn't make all this extra money people are talking about.

I think it's so funny that Street Scene organizers are so proud that BEP is playing the festival that they need to send out daily Facebook updates about how great BEP is. Most of the comments they receive in response are negative, and seem to be deleted.

It's been rumbling locally that there were problems, and recently it was "confirmed"...
Edit - (From CityBeat)
"Grand Ole Party has officially split, according to a source who’s worked closely with the band. Although their management has maintained that the band is still together and GOP have remained mum, the source, who prefers not to be identified, says the band decided to split shortly after returning from Atlanta, where they were working with producer Ben Allen on what would have been their second album. The source cited intra-band squabbles and singer Kristin Gundred’s desire to focus on her new project, Dum Dum Girls, as the reason for the split."

It's early this week.... set times please. Looking forward to being able to take the trolley to and from the festival this year, my motel is near the civic center stop. Also happy that sdss has a chunk of bands that were at Coachella this year and last. It will be nice to be able to see some of those bands a second time. I'm also happy to see they have a fifth stage to spread things out a little more. I hope there aren't too many set time conflicts. And why don't they have a cool poster listing all the bands for sale? They've had them in years past but not last year. I specifically looked to buy a poster last year but they didn't have any. This year they probably won't have one either. Very lame. Every other festival makes a poster, sdss should too.

The 500 West Hotel is super cheap but may be book? It's a very modern european hotel (small rooms w/ shared bathrooms) I used to stay here before I moved here and it's not bad at all especially for benders! located next to train & trolly station 866 315 4251

Sorry, my sentence on the internet rate wasn't very clear. If you make a rsvp online at motel.com they have a cheaper rate of $75.00 per night. When you get the room, if you want to add wifi service, it's $2.99 per day.
Yeah, meeting up at the motel and taking the trolley together should be perfect. That way I won't have to walk around the festival, yelling your name, trying to find you, and looking like a loon.

I went to their website and it looks like a good place to stay, the rooms are cheaper but look really nice. They are smaller rooms and the bathroom is shared. So it just comes down to what you want in a room vs. what you want to pay. And if you're only there for one night it seems like a great deal all around.

Last year, with this same set up, the two main stages didn't conflict. They did more of a tag team/back and forth style. So, Thievery Corp will probably close out the one stage and about two minutes later MIA will start at the other stage.

The only bands I really want to see Saturday are No Age (seeing them the next weekend already, seen them twice so far this year), Of Montreal, Los Campesinos, and The Dead Weather. The latter three are certainly not worth sixty bucks. Tickets are outrageous this year. Pass.

awww man - well good for you with the internship but you missed a fun weekend! Hopefully you do make it to SS!
I am definitely down for a meet up. Once the set times are out maybe those who want to meet up can all give some input as to what time they'd like to meet - maybe there is a show we all plan on catching or something.

Keep this a positive community?!?!?!?! wtf. it's their fault for saying the set list would be out and it's not yet. plus they have bep headlining and they didnt replace the b boys. Here's a thought sdss. don't create a facebook page if you can't take the heat and don't tell us info and then not give us the info. and if sf outside lands music fest can get tenacious d to replace the b boys you guys can sure as hell find a band in L.A. to replace the b boys. hell, at the last minute last year you got devo to replace the black crowes. I'm just glad they have a good undercard with a lot of Coachella bands that i'll be able to see for a second time.

Every time there is a Street Scene update on Facebook, they delete the negative comments and post 'keep this a positive community'.
What I really want to know is if I'm in San Diego Thurs, will the box office be open to exchange tickets for wristbands instead of waiting in line Friday?
I also agree they shouldn't post the schedule will be out early in the week if they can't get the schedule posted early in the week.
Edit: Earlier in the day whoever runs the Street Scene Facebook page posted 'lol any minute' in response to a comment about when the set times would be released. This was 7 hours ago.

There is definitely a Saturday headliner still in the works. Not sure if they will follow through on it, but it is very conscipuous. The Fulana stage isn't even the "main stage," they use the Fulano stage as the main, technically. And of course that stops at 9:35. Someone has to be playing the Fulano from 10:40-12.
I don't care because I'm not going that day anyway, but maybe I will if it's someone I'd love to see.

Here's a little schedule I doodled:
Friday
Dungen (Green) 5:30-6:15
Devendra Banhart (Fulana) 6:15-6:30
Wavves (Casbah) 6:30-6:50
Holy Fuck (Green) 6:50-7:15
Matt & Kim (Casbah) 7:15-7:55
Deerhunter (Casbah) 8:15-9:00
Chromeo (Zarabanda) 9:00-9:30
Modest Mouse (Fulana) 9:40-10:15
Calexico (Casbah) 10:30-11:45
Too many conflicts! I like that everyone is playing the Casbah Stage though, that's the best stage. I also love that Calexico is getting a nice long set time. I will have a fun day.

The following questions are for people who attended last year:
1. How long of a wait is it to get in the festival?
2. How long of a wait to get beers?
3. Is the setup much different than last year? Which would make it much quicker to buy beers?

On Friday I arrived when MGMT was on and it took like 10 minutes to get in. Saturday was a breeze, arrived early in the day - by 430 or 500 and it took a few minutes.
I went to the micro brew beer garden when the sun was setting on both days (more or less, can't really remember) and it was a few minutes to get into the garden, you purchase your voucher tickets for samples then just walk up to the booth for samples. I heard getting the other beer in the other gardens was a pain though.
The set up looks different because the beer area is by the 2 main stages and looks to be pretty large. This may be from the length of time it took people last year to purchase beer and so beer drinkers didn't have to be so far from the music.
I'm just hoping they have micros in that section too.

Thanks for the info!
It looks like they have that huge over 21 area for the 2 main stages this year, a microbrew area and a margarita area. I thought something was posted a while back that to get a drink last year took forever outside the microbrew area, so I'm hoping they worked out those kinks.
Also, what were the drink prices?
unknown
08-21-2009, 10:09 AM
Yeah, I remember reading that too. Not sure on the drink prices - the micros were like 10 or 12 bucks for 8 samples? It's kinda hazy...

I spent a lot of time in the micro brew area last year and don't remember the lines being too bad. The lines were longer at the main beer garden, and they didn't have any micro beers there. Seems like it was just BudweiserMillerCoors crap.

This festival starts way too late. 2 acts per day start at 4:30pm, and the rest of the stages start after 5:00pm. If they just started the festival earlier, they would avoid the conflicts between the small amount of good acts they have on the lineup.

Friday:
Band of Horses vs Holy Fuck
Deerhunter vs Chromeo
Missing 1/2 of Nortec Collective for Chromeo
Missing 1/2 of Modest Mouse for Nortec Collective
Saturday:
Silversun Pickups vs the Faint vs LA Riots
I still don't understand Public Enemy overlapping with Busta Rhymes
Bassnectar vs Sharon Jones vs MIA
I don't dig splitting sets like many people here, I want to see the band from beginning to end. But Street Scene's schedule forces split sets.

Looking like the following for me:
Friday
5:30-6:15 Dungen
6:40-7:25 Band of Horses
8:30-9:30 Chromeo
9:30-10:00 Nortec Collective
10:00-10:35 Modest Mouse
10:35-11:15 Girl Talk (never seen him live, curious to check it out, saw some from afar at Coachella)
Take off for Chromeo afterparty
Saturday
5:10-5:30 Ra Ra Riot
5:30-6:10 Los Campesinos!
6:40-7:25 Of Montreal
7:45-8:45 LA Riots (going to try and check out some Silversun and Faint prior, but seen both of them before)
8:45-9:35 Dead Weather
9:40-10:40 Thievery Corporation
10:40-11:40 Bassnectar
11:40-maybe check out MIA encore?
Since there are ins-and-outs, may hit up a bar nearby during a break. Heard of a place called the Corner pretty close with $4 PBR tall cans and cheap Jager shots.

Silversun Pickups vs The Faint
Of Montreal, and only to hear The Past is a Grotesque Animal
There are a couple others I might see, but I would not bother if there was anything remotely decent on at the same time.

I just saw Deerhunter a couple weeks ago at Lolla, the last time I saw Chromeo was at Coachella in 2008 and it's still a no brainer for me.

You didn't, but you did say this...
There are like 8 bands I want to see and 7 conflict. Great job, SS.
Which leads me to believe that you somehow feel like Street Scene messed up in putting Deerhunter and Chromeo on at the same time. When, in a logical world, putting Deerhunter and Chromeo against each other makes quite a bit of sense.

Uh, no, that doesn't mean that all. How does my being disappointed that bands I want to see conflict insinuate that I think Chromeo and Deerhunter are similar artists? Sorry man, you were really reaching.

Silversun vs the Faint, Public Enemy overlapping with Busta Rhymes (even though it's not a major overlap), these are Busch League mistakes.
