The part where he sings:
We drove a bio-car
cuz we all love the earth
It didn't get us far
and always sounded like koalas
stuck out to me.
But, in all serious... Scarecrows on a Killer Slant is fucking colossal.

While waiting for Caribou to set up his stage yesterday, two guys next to me were discussing somewhat loudly how influential Pitchfork has been for up and coming bands, and how they've been trying to get their album on Pitchfork's radar by posting their music to blogs. I joined in and commented on how Kevin Drew of BSS commented on Pitchfork's contribution to their success and was met with evil hipster death stares. I then had to listen to one of them blather on about his band's "on-the-fringe, not-popularly-known" music influences: Surfer Blood, Avi Buffalo, Real Estate.

06-27-2010, 05:51 PM
No, and they are not the best. What makes them good is usually the writers seem to generally care about the music they're writing about, and when they find something they like, they are pretty passionate about it. And, when the whole staff agrees on something enough to give a best new music (or however that happens), it's generally very good music. Pitchfork is a resource and talking about how much you dislike it is old and pointless.

I don't really think you've added anything to what i already know. That aside, i can't tell if the dissing is tongue-in-cheek (a la edward sharpe who earned a whopping 4.1 (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13852-up-from-below/)) and you can tell they care enough about music to be paid to be really snobby and gawkeresque wannabes at times. When they are positive, they are very well received. Their most popular read review is a very positive, lovely and caringly written evaluation. And it's rediculous, when Sharpe's release is way more emotionally deep than Aeroplane's new single 'we can't fly' (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/11919-we-cant-fly-radio-edit/), and i'm not comparing them. Just some of their reviews deserve a re-write because of all the scorn and rediculousness.

Wouldn't you rather see someone who dislikes a piece of music express that distaste rather than write a vague, pointlessly praising review that doesn't really go into why they like the album?
Your response doesn't really make sense though. What is their most popular read review? Why is Edward Sharpe your focus there? Many people find Edward Sharpe to be a bit cloying and obvious with their music (although I disagree and enjoy quite a bit of their stuff, I can definitely see where people are coming from when they say that.) I disagreed with the Pitchfork review of Edward Sharpe, but at the same time I can definitely understand and hear the main point their making in the review, which is that they take a stiff, heavy-handed approach to 60s revivalism throughout the album, and that on Home they successfully transcend that issue.
Or maybe I'm missing your point in the back and forth of your post.

speaking of back and forth...
I am just saying him/them as an example. Don't make me dig up more saddening reviews. Placing numbers next to music makes no sense to me. Comparing E. Sharpe to fruitopia is just cruel, man. But whatever, they're just an opinion factory, and we're all entitled to ours. It's their clout and ranking system and wording ugh all of that it rubs me wrong, like away from music, and away from them. That's all.

Edward Sharpe got a poor review because they make shit music. That's understandable. But their accompanying rating seemed extra low to me because of how much mileage the album had got for itself among the Pitchfork-reading audience since it was released. As if to rub it in everyone's face how truly vapid it was. Had they been a more under the radar artist, I do feel like that review could have been less cold.

I don't understand their role. Are they tastemakers or yuckity-yuck snobs. Only time will tell if their review (yes Sharpe's) is flimsier than the piece of hard work they peed on. It's always fun to tear things apart, but I don't appreciate unfairness. That's all. /me
It's also fun to be purposefully vapid, and equally deserve a high ranking.

There is no denying that they have been taste makers. Many of their lesser writers are also what might be referred to as "yuckity-yuck snobs." There is also no shortage of petulant individuals that feel the constant need to bicker redundantly about something that is obvious on the face of things. When someone calls you out on the bad taste you have... It can be either a rough realization or tantrum riddled with denial.

I guess this all boils down to what one believes is and isn't a pop song. While I do think M.I.A.'s got a strong pop element for sure, she's got a strong element of a lot of shit... I think there's three or four genre descriptions I would tag her music with before the word "pop."
This is relevant I guess because when critiquing her new album from a "pop" standpoint, according to P4K, it blows...

Remember when Pitchfork wrote good, rigorously critical reviews? About interesting albums? http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/4070-op/
The question posed in the second to last paragraph is fantastic. While I think that Ikeda actually accomplishes this with the album (albeit in a more subtle, spectral way than the manner used in the previous works that were referenced by the author), I immediately respected the author for bringing it up.

I was reading reviews on old Belle & Sebastian albums, and it took me to this:
10.0: Indispensable, classic
9.5-9.9: Spectacular
9.0-9.4: Amazing
8.5-8.9: Exceptional; will likely rank among writer's top ten albums of the year
8.0-8.4: Very good
7.5-7.9: Above average; enjoyable
7.0-7.4: Not brilliant, but nice enough
6.0-6.9: Has its moments, but isn't strong
5.0-5.9: Mediocre; not good, but not awful
4.0-4.9: Just below average; bad outweighs good by just a little bit
3.0-3.9: Definitely below average, but a few redeeming qualities
2.0-2.9: Heard worse, but still pretty bad
1.0-1.9: Awful; not a single pleasant track
0.0-0.9: Breaks new ground for terrible
used to be on the old Pitchfork website. also they gave Arab Strap a 0.8

did this get posted already?
http://www.pitchforkreviewsreviews.com/
talked to barack obama, the president of the united states, about pitchfork
okay so did you ever read that really long New York Times Magazine piece called like “All The Obama Twentysomethings” about all the really young White House staffers, kids in their twenties who went to like Harvard and Yale and now work as liasons or advisers or coordinators in the Obama Administration?
okay well so on Saturday i was at a party and i was gushing about Obama to this kid who said he was with the Democratic National Committee, i told him how i didn’t think Obama was getting a fair shake from the press right now and a bunch of other stuff. i also told him about the night i was DJing at Lit and Obama won the election and people were dancing out on the street, on 2nd Avenue, and how it was like fucking magical and i really wanted to run outside but i couldn’t because i was working
and then he told me that if i wanted to, on Wednesday (which is today), i could volunteer to drive a van in the presidential motorcade. so we emailed back and forth a few times to set it up, and what i am doing today is driving a 12-passenger Ford E-350 van in the presidential motorcade as he passes through new york today to do two democratic fundraisers and tape an appearance on the daytime TV show The View. right now he is reportedly eating a sandwich at a sub shop in Edison, New Jersey and i am sitting in the lobby of the heliport just south of the South Street Seaport with like five hundred cops and secret service agents monitoring the perimeter.
my van’s name is Press 1 and i am supposed to keep my mouth shut around the press that i’m chauffeuring because anything i say is “on the record” and could embarrass the administration.
if you’re wondering why some random 22-year-old is doing this, there’s three reasons: 1) the president is doing Democratic fundraisers, which are political, so using enlisted military men or policemen to drive his people around would be ethically questionable because those dudes are apolitical by nature 2) it’s expensive to fly in drivers from DC, and there’s no real reason to 3) there is a culture of volunteerism within the Obama administration. like apparently when he does a rally in St. Louis there are like a hundred people doing what i do. they did an extensive background check on me to do this too. i wonder if secret service agents read this blog?
also if you’re wondering if Secret Service agents are gonna be tapping on my window for blogging about this, i was told that they won’t be as long as i don’t include any sensitive security stuff. also if you are a terrorist and you’re reading this to obtain national security information i’m gonna tell you right now that there’s nothing sensitive here and i’d also like to take this opportunity to recommend to you the new Big Boi record entitled Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty because it is so good
so anyway today i took the day off from work to drive this van in the presidential motorcade and i hope that by the end of the day i can ask Barack Obama what his favorite indie rock band is and if he’s familiar with Pitchfork (i know he’s 48 but he’s pretty hip and from Chicago and lived there for years while the festival was going on and before he was president) and i’m gonna ask him what he thinks of it if i can!!!
so as i just said, i am sitting on a bench in the lobby of the South Manhattan Heliport. the president’s car is out back and i just took a video with it. on the drive from midtown to the seaport i listened to the lunchtime old school hip-hop/r&b show on Hot 97 on the radio, i was driving a 12-passenger van by myself with my Google Maps directions printout stuffed under my leg so it wouldn’t fly out the window and listening to Mariah Carey’s Fantasy, i was so scared i was gonna crash the van but after like 2 minutes on the road i felt okay about it, it’s not as hard as i thought it was gonna be, maybe i’ll try to drive a bus sometime?
now i am sitting in the van because the president’s helicopter just left new jersey and the woman who is the press liason just opened the passenger door to the van and she startled me because i was writing that post about pitchfork being searchable by writer and i was like “ahhhh hi!!” and turned the radio off really fast because i’m listening to Hot 97 and the new Young Jeezy single featuring Plies was playing really loud and the Plies verse was on and he was saying “ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, THAT’S WHAT THE ***** (pussy, it was bleeped) COST ME” right as she opened the door. i think i just got off on the wrong foot with that woman
then i wait another five minutes and a different woman gets into the passenger seat of my van and introduces herself and i ask if she was in new jersey and if flew on the helicopter with the president and she says “yes” and i ask her what kind of sandwich he got at the sub shop in New Jersey and she says he got a “super sub” which she assumed had “everything” on it, and then she told me that the prices at the sub shop were quite reasonable and she remembered a lot of the prices. she said “the sandwiches were $7.50 or $8, a small bag of chips was 50 cents, a large was $1, a small potato salad was $1.69, a large was $2.49…” her memory was impressive
then we drove to ABC studios and the president went on The View. me and the other drivers stood around in a basement room with all the press people watching the president on The View. the press people were using their laptops, many of their laptops had extra batteries and wireless receivers taped up with black electric tape to the back of the laptop screens which i thought looked pretty hardcore
then we went out to a space they set up for the president to take pictures with people. it was a red carpet with flags and fake trees and a curtain. all six of us, the drivers, stood in photo-ready formation for awhile waiting for the president. david axelrod walked by, he looked a little disheveled, he waved to us. and then the president walked down a hallway with some secret service dudes around him and into the room we were in and looked at us and said “hi guys!!” and we all said “hi!” and he thanked us for driving and then looked us over, we’re all pretty young, and said “are any of you students?” and two of the drivers say “yes” and he goes “where do you go to school?” and they say “yale” and he says “what do the rest of you do?” to each person individually and they each answer. he shakes all of our hands
i’m last and when he gets to me he shakes my hand and i say “it’s great to meet you!!” and he says “what do you do?”
and i am looking barack obama in the eye and i say, “i write a blog about a popular music website!”
and he looks at me quizzically for a second, i guess he was sort of piecing it together, and he goes, “oh, which website?”
and i say, “it’s called pitchfork. it’s based in chicago! are you familiar with it?”
and he says, “no, but i’ll have to look into it!”
and then he walks around behind us and stands next to me and the photographer takes our picture twice and then we go back out to the vans to drive him to his next event, where he’ll meet Anna Wintour.
so now i am sitting on like 44th street in the line of vans and a man in military garb carrying a huge rifle just strolled by. that Young Jeezy song is on Hot 97 again. i just ate my tuna salad on a bagel. so i’m driving a white house staffer, a photographer, and two people who have not clarified their roles here to me yet. as the motorcade goes around new york, the streets are lined with people. someone in the car remarked on how amazing it is to be in new york but mostly they stay silent. we pass a man who is holding up a sign that says something like SPACE ORBITAL PSYCHOSOCIAL WARFARE or something and the photographer takes a picture of him and i wanna lean over to the staffer in the front seat and say “do you think he’s on to something?” but i don’t think we’re on the same sense of humor wavelength. then later the photographer is looking over his pictures and realizes that the man standing in front of the man with the sign is Luis Guzman
whenever we are not with our vans, we are told to leave the vans running with the air conditioners also running (so the van isn’t boiling hot when the staffers get back to it), but to leave the windows down in case a staffer needs to get into the vans and we aren’t there to let them in. the vans are still boiling hot. one of the other drivers notes, “motorcades aren’t good for the environment”
i tell the staffer who asked me to volunteer for this about talking to the president about Pitchfork and he says he didn’t think barack knew about pitchfork. on The View they asked Barack Obama what music is on his iPod and he said “everything” and they asked “justin bieber?” and he said “no” and my friend jokes that it’s because justin bieber got a bigger ovation at the white house easter egg roll this year than the president. i guess they’re just used to obama at the white house and justin bieber being there was novel. but i just can’t imagine that obama would be listening to justin bieber even if that hadn’t happened
we drive to the west village, where barack chills with anna wintour at her apartment. we park on houston and sullivan. houston street was blocked all the way from the FDR to maybe the West Side Highway and there are people standing behind barricades looking at the motorcade. one of the women who i am driving asks what neighborhood we are in and i tell her “Greenwich Village i think”. she said that one time she ate at a restaurant that frank bruni recommended to her on this street. she said they’re friends.
in the van outside anna wintour’s house i talked to one of the staffers about music. she really likes the avett brothers and doesn’t really like the jonas brothers. she’s friends with the avett brothers from when they were like a local band in north carolina. then she saw the book i was reading, michael azerrad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life, and she told me about going to rock shows in the 70’s. then the motorcade dropped barack and his crew off back at the helipad and they flew to new jersey in their helicopters and then back to DC. the new york times writer who was in my van filed a brief report about the whole day from the back of the van. you can find it on the New York Times Caucus Blog. it’s pretty different from my report but you know what they say: there’s your side, there’s my side, and then there’s the truth

90's nostalgia! They posted their top 50 music videos of the 90s and are going to spend next week posting their top 200 songs of the 90s. Should be fun.
Thoughts on the music video list? "Buddy Holly" is fun and cute and all, but #2 of the decade is a bit much. Also, I think the video for "Da Funk" is fucking stupid and the fact that it got in at #3 ahead of "Around The World" is unacceptable. "Come To Daddy," "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," and "Sabotage" in the top ten are good calls though. I'm planning on watching the whole list through.

Beyond the fun and cute, nobody had done anything like that with music videos before, technologically speaking. I mean, they looked like they were there. That was mind-blowing in 1994.
I have no problem with it at #2, well deserved.

I'm on the fence about this video. I just don't find robot Bjork to be an appealing image; in fact, it's an image that bugs the hell out of me. That said, it's otherwise an incredibly well made and poignant video. But still. That robot face. I kind of want to punch it. Also, our final exam in one of my Cultural Studies classes in college (does film school count as college?) involved analyzing this video.

It's still just a pretty straight forward gimmick with very little variation for a couple of minutes. No way that shit's better than "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)."

The "one track per artist" thing is ridiculous. I don't want to see a list that includes 28 Radiohead songs and all 11 tracks from Loveless any more than the next person, but still, there's gotta be a compromise. You know, like the five songs per artist rule they used for the '60s list.

When that album came out, I read a review of it and thought 'that looks really good' so I bought it. The fact that Eno produced was also an enticement. The continued obsession with "Via Chicago" at Pitchfork is baffling to me. Wilco has albums worth of better material. I guess I need to remind myself that for Pitchfork, best songs of the 90's are typically judged by entirely non-musical criteria.

It's subjective but I would put Via Chicago in my top 5 favorite Wilco songs. It's definitely my favorite song writing and the guitar is subtle and beautiful. Live the song really blows me away and gets overwhelming with so much sound, distortion and noise during the chorus. Over the years the song has certainly gone through a metamorphosis live.
I fucking love the the influx of instrumenation at 3:38 and then watch Nels at 4:00

That list is much better.
This thread has inspired me to put a play list together of Pitchforks top ten albums of the 90's, 80's and 70's. I'm going to listen to their top ten 90's albums today (if I can resist from listening to the 80's and 70's albums).
Pitchfork's top ten albums (((and songs))) of the 90's are the following:
001: Radiohead - OK Computer ((( Paranoid Android)))
002: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (((Soon)))
003: The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin (((Waitin' For A Superman)))
004: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (((Holland, 1945)))
005: Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted (((Summer Babe)))
006: Nirvana - Nevermind (((Smells Like Teen Spirit)))
007: DJ Shadow - ...Endtroducing (((Midnight In A Perfect World)))
008: Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (((Gold Sounds)))
009: Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See a Darkness (((I See a Darkness)))
010: Guided by Voices - Bee Thousand (((I Am a Scientist)))
After looking through their 100 albums of the 90's I can see that they clearly avoided some obvious choices like the following:
Hole - Live Through This
Tool - Ænima
Rage Against the Machine - Self Titled
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Pearl Jam - Ten
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Stone Temple Pilots - Core
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom
Sublime - 40oz to Freedom
Snoop Dogg - Doggstyle
Let me know of any other good 90's albums that aren't on their top 100 because I'd like to grab them. Thanks!

Pavement gets the much needed Pitchfork bump. This probably would have worked out better for them if it was a few months before the tour started. But anyways. They are right Gold Soundz is the best song ever. but I am biased.

I don't know why Pitchfork disregards Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star. It’s a great fuckin album. They don’t even review the album or list it.

Because this isn't an album list?
Re: the P4K bump for Pavement. I still fail to comprehend how it was possible for me to show up at the Pavement set at Coachella this year five minutes before it started, and walk basically all the way to the front. I get that the sounds of contemporary indie are far, far away from Pavement's aesthetic, but still, they were the definitive underground American band of their decade.

That's a solid question especially being that so many underground American band's broke into the mainstream during the nineties.

I'd put Sonic Youth above Pavement in that regard... But Gold Soundz is a perfectly admirable choice for best song.

The respective merits of Sonic Youth and Pavement could be debated endlessly, but is it really an open question as to which decade Sonic Youth did their best work in?

People would have said the same thing if they picked a Radiohead or MBV song, if not more so.

Please, company wide Radiohead jerk off sessions are too mainstream.

pavement? ha! what garbage. their list is now irrelevant. there was a reason that they were laughed at in the greatness that was the 90's. too bad none of the pitchfork writers are old enough to recall it.
paranoid android is one of the greatest songs ever created in the history of music. i would expect nothing less from the rococo's that work for pitchfork to not put it at #1. how anyone can take them seriously is beyond me.

I'm not the biggest Ok Computer fan and I do think that MBV is vastly overrated by Pitchfork. The real question is what decade hasn't Sonic Youth done their best work in? Sonic Youth's two greatest efforts were accomplished in the nineties. One is reaching mainstream success with the single "Bull in the Heather" and the other creating arguably one of the most epic songs ever..."The Diamond Sea".

Though I do like Pavement, I 100% agree with you. Most of the classic 90s stuff is far superior and Gold Soundz is a joke compared to songs like Closer or Paranoid Android.

My friend and I were talking about this list last weekend and what would probably be on it. I guessed Pavement would take the top spot, but he said Common People would definitely be Top 5. I don't know if that's because Pitchfork is just predictable to begin with, or if it's become predictable after having seen 10 years of their dorky English major write-ups.

The Vaselines review seems just a bit harsh. Not totally inaccurate or anything, but it's far too enjoyable to be written off as "retrograde and maybe even beneath them."

I agree. Also, the review today of TMoE is so overwrought and sappy I actually gagged reading it. I can't believe assholes get paid by this website to write like this:
They're unmistakably Tallest, marked by the vulnerability in Kristian Matsson's croak of a voice, the strident complexity of his guitarwork, and his thoughtful, often fractured lyrics inspired, ostensibly, by his native Sweden-- specifically the mountainous region of Dalarna, northwest of Stockholm. And yet, despite the same elements, Blues has a very different character from The Wild Hunt. It's slightly darker, more wounded, muted, and meditative, lacking the fanfare of the album's more heraldic moments. While limited in scope and tone, the EP allows Matsson to explore one particular mood: a primary color in his palette, a bluesy melancholy that defines and permeates every song here.

I honestly don't see what's wrong with that. It does a pretty good job of conveying a mood to someone who hasn't heard it yet.

They can eat a dick over the Everything Everything review.
If they were boring, droney, unremarkable, and from Brooktown they would have gotten a 9.9.9.8.
guedita
09-16-2010, 01:20 PM
It's the grammatical structure, coupled with a bunch of arrogant, overtly sentimental adjectives that irritates me. Sadness (a bluesy melancholy) permeates and defines the songs? It's superfluous writing for the sake of superfluity and the desire to come off as pensive.
5 songs EPs rarely deserve such lengthy reviews.

Side issue: bad synth and indie folk are apparently the new punk in that the barrier to entry is so god damn low that pretty much everyone is making irrelevant, interchangeable records in those styles.
Actually, that's not a new thing but Ive been meaning to vent about it.

I miss Ed Droste's Twitter. Come back, Ed Droste. I'm also surprised that they mentioned both Owen Pallett and Wayne Coyne's Twitter feeds without mentioning what Owen Pallett said about Wayne Coyne in his Twitter feed.
And I know they've a good reason for mentioning Jay Reatard, but it's still weird.
