Yeah, I know I would get killed with conflicts. I would want to see
Pearl Jam
Dead Weather
Sonic Youth
Dan Auerbach

So, maybe if a schedule comes out and I have money at the time and none of those four conflict i'll see what I can do.

Im excited about it though... K'naan....Bboys, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, Thievery Corp, Avett Brothers, Ghostland, Decemberists, Flogging Molly!, Sam Roberts Band, Dead Weather, B-52s!

I'm looking forward to seeing Ghostland, Flogging Molly, K'Naan, The Dead Weather Sonic Youth, Grizzly Bear, Dan Auerbach, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Phoenix, Devotchka.

Such a great undercard. Where are you staying Paul?

I'm still on the fence about going. Just a money thing. I think my odds are 50/50.

I was just a bit disappointed when it turns out most everything I want to see is playing Sunday. I just know there's going to be conflicts galore now...

Per ACL forum, schedule should be out mid-July.

There's been some chatter about St. Vincent having ACL (10/2) listed as one of the tour stops, but I can find no evidence to that effect. FWIW, St. Vincent WILL be in New Orleans on 10/3. So I guess it's possible.

I'm kinda curious to see how the headliners will work out. I'm guessing on Friday it'll be Beastie Boys vs. Kings of Leon and I THOUGHT it would be Dave Matthews Band vs. John Legend on Saturday but John Legend is now playing Friday. Kinda wonder if that means DMB will be unopposed, against The Levon Helm Band (doubt it) or if they're gonna add someone. I assume they'll play unopposed.

Contrary to popular misconception, the Dave Matthews Band does not rock.

I've never attended acl before but im very interested in going this year. I have a few questions before I make my decision. Is the curfew at 10 or 11 for this event? For anyone thats been there before, does the party migrate over to 6th street? I'd also like to know if they typically pin the headliner with the #3 subheadliner... more specifically i'm asking if they would pin ghostland against dmb (yes i like dave matthews).

Well 3 days are sold out, so you are going to have to buy single day tickets now. And why dont you look up past schedules to do the math?

feather
07-05-2009, 12:07 PM
Whip and I are buying plane tickets without a 3-day pass. Good idea or no? Flights are pretty cheap right now...

suprefan
07-05-2009, 12:15 PM
I would get your tickets first, cause what if you never end up with them due the costbeing too high in the aftermarket and you wasted money on a flight that couldve gone to something else.

feather
07-05-2009, 12:22 PM
So you think I should wait to see if more 3-day passes go on sale? I am not buying single days. I'm just worried they won't release more 3-day passes until a few weeks before show time and flights will be too expensive :(

suprefan
07-05-2009, 12:31 PM
Who knows if they ever will thats the thing, and does ACL have a message board? You never know somebody might be selling a 3 day on there cause they cant go. Thats all I could think of, check craigslist in texas? Well the worst thing woudl be you are stuck in Austin for 4 or 5 days if you didnt get tickets. Thats not the worst thing in the world, well except that you dont eat BBQ.

Barton Springs Pool to close for months-long repairs
7/21/2009 12:47 PM
By: News 8 Austin Staff

One of Austin's crown jewels soon will be closed for up to several months as the city works to repair damages at Barton Springs Pool.

Stuart Strong, with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, said the pool could be closed for up to six months in order for the city to make vital repairs to cracks and damages in its bypass tunnel.

It’s unclear when the repairs will begin for various reasons. Spring flow must be at a certain level before the federal government approves the pool’s closure as the springs are the only known habitat of the endangered Barton Springs Salamander.

Being able to cool off at Barton Springs during ACL is one of the redeeming qualities about the fest.

worst news ever!

On the bright side, they re-opened Zilker park after 4 months of renovation. New thick grass and water fountains throughout the park. Which means the days of dust are gone.

Is anyone really surprised that the YYY's are replacing the Bboys?

It had been heavily rumored since C3 booked them for Lolla, so no surprise here. Not sure why they took so long to officially release it. Tommy speculated that maybe they had tried to get someone else, and when that didn't work, they went ahead and booked the YYYs. Who knows. I know they'll put on a good show.

i'm glad i didn't stay the whole weekend. lots of rain and mud, except for friday that was excellent (~80F, no rain, new lush grass). school of seven bells were a nice first show for the weekend. i enjoyed the walkmen a lot, they played 1-2 songs of their upcoming album. huge crowd for phoenix at 4pm, hearing their cover of air's playground love was a cool surprise. them crooked vultures were ok, nothing great. i left early to get a good spot for yeah yeah yeahs who put an awesome show as usual. no need to remark what an amazing performen karen o is.

it rained the whole day on saturday, mud surfaced above the grass and it was smelling really bad because of the dillo dirt, and by sunday it was a mudfest. people were giving their sunday tickets away.

I went and it made me miss Coachella badly. I did all 3 days and was even fine with the 8+ hours of rain on Saturday, but bailed early on Sunday because the mud smelled like a blend of fish and crap. Phoenix and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were awesome shows... but I did notice the the sound at most of the stages was bad and the sound bleeding from stage to stage was ridiculous. Throw in the f'd up parking/shuttle situation, the generally rotten reception from locals and the a-hole that slammed his car into my rental car... and I'll gladly NOT attend again. I had such hopes, but ACL just didn't deliver.

My weekend started out as a nightmare. I had purchased hard tickets from someone on craigslist the week they printed them. When I went to redeem them for my wristband, I was told that they had already been used, that the original purchaser had came and said that they had lost the tickets and Front Gate replaced them. WTF???

No problem I thought. Seeing as the tickets themselves say no refunds or exchanges, I figured I would talk to a manager and get the whole thing cleared up. Boy was I wrong. He basically called me an idiot for not buying tickets through them and he hopes that I learned my lesson and he "hopes to see me next year". After a few choice words and some loud name calling a cop finally came over escorted me away from the box office.

I wasnt letting this ruin my weekend so we used one wristband for three people. I got in all three days without hassle.

gotta run I will update this later with a few pics and vids.

It's really not that great of a festival, Sally. No artwork, really family-oriented, terrible sound bleed.

ACL is more like a back yard bar-b-que with music that you invite your friends and their family to. It's not a festival that you walk away from saying it was the best weekend of your life. Good times for sure, but if I didnt live here I probably wouldnt go year after year.

I didn't notice sound bleed at all.

i should have went and had tix.... :( I wonder how Them Crooked Vultures were.

If they have a drop of consistency (which I doubt is an issue with that crew), they rocked, hard.

it's a fun festival, but this year's lineup just wasn't for me so i only went friday. also, biking in austin is always great so that way you can avoid the horrible parking/shuttle situation. sound bleed wasn't that bad (at least friday). last year it was worse; i'm still upset band of horses' set was ruined by the foo fighters.

i've been to sxsw a couple of times, seen all the shows i've wanted to see without having any wristband or badge. just get to the shows early and you'll be fine. wristbands/badges help you a lot if you get to the shows late.

I havent done a sxsw wristband in four years. Rsvp for any and every day party I can. Last year I spent a total of $45 in covers.

The sound bleed was really bad at the smaller stages - BMI and Austin Ventures.

I don't think it's a horrible festival, but after doing Coachella things about it seem silly. If I lived in Austin I would probably attend regularly because it's so inexpensive, but to me it's not worth the hassle of traveling half way across the country for.

yeah i go because it's within driving distance for me but i would probably not fly across the country for it. the same way i wouldn't fly for lollapalooza.

however you should try sxsw. it's nicer, more bands, less bros and no chairs in your way to the stages.

I agree, the bro factor was WAY too high at ACL.

Not sure why there are all these crappy reviews, me and my friends all had a blast. I personally did not give a shit about the mud or rain and went barefoot Sunday. I guess I didnt pay attention to the smell, not much worse than roo can be. I will just answer finish my answer with videos I recorded.

Pearl Jam rocked the hell out.

Ghostland brang the lasers

Phoenix was great

Them Crooked Vultures were good, Grohl on drums is awesome.

K'Naan played an acoustic set on the kiddie stage

I saw Harper instead of Dead Weather since I know the drummer, but I saw Dead Weather annihilate the house of Blues Dallas the next day.

I'm with you here. Me and my group had an amazing time. I could care less about the "bro factor" there were just as many annoying headband wearing hipsters as there were baseball cap wearing bros. Plus DMB was there, what would one expect.
I would go so far as to say that the bros were more respectful and had a much better time.

It seems that if you embraced the mud and just went with it, good times were to be had.

The only thing wrong with this festival is the chair factor. Something really needs to be done about people setting up in the middle of a walkway and policing the people trying to get by.

I concur with the reviews that say this is more a backyard fest. than a festival that will evoke great memories for years to come.

I have been to ACL a couple of times and it still pales in comparison to Coachella in terms of bands, people, and atmosphere.
I actually live here and the line-up hasn't drawn me to attend in a few years. Plus they REALLY need to do something about the "i'll put all the lawn chairs/blankets i have and save this spot" crowd. >_<

Coachella 2010 for me!! =)
