is sleeping a car super dangerous
we should all park together and make our own campground

Vericuester
02-13-2007, 09:29 PM
Yeah, we should! Someone told me it was, but if we park in numbers, I'm sure it's fine. I'm going to crack a window obviously. Don't want the police pulling up and being all weird.

I mean, unless it's a 24 hour deal, there wouldn't be anyone around.

I picture this crazy amount of cars jamming up Wal marts and Home Depots through out the area.

I wouldn't call it "safe" by the way.

C DUB YA
02-14-2007, 12:13 AM
There is a trick though.

You must get at least 4 cars. Like it has been said, the more, the safer. When you park, park side by side, VERY CLOSE together, so no one could walk between the cars. put as many people as possible in the cars on the interior.

Just be careful not to take off side mirrors the next morning. There, I've done my good deed for the day.

Vericuester

Were you guys serious about this? Because I will seriously stay in a car.

Could always do the wagon circle technique that the pioneers used when being attacked by native americans hell bent on collecting a few scalps.

And women.

Gotta have women.

Back on track, just park a bunch of cars in a circle, and some in the middle, and sleep in the middle ones.

Not illegal, but your random place is most likely private property.

Wal Marts are definatly cool with having people park overnight. If a cop comes to question you just tell them you're on a convoy trip to save orphans in Mexico and you all pulled over because everyone was to tired to drive.

You guys do not know what time it is...

1. Coachella and indio are like ghost towns and lots are empty so for there to be a cluster of you car campers is right off suspicious

2. You guys have know idea of how many gang bangers on dope there are in the area which means...the local johny is a stiff one!!! I'm not kidding the cops don't fuck around

3. With the 2 facts I just gave you be prepared to get woken up by flashlights and be asked to leave the parking area you've occupied!!! And if your pack'n yeah your getting booked and taken down to the joint!!!

What time is it then? if your pack'n? that is the stupidest thing I've heard. If anyone is packing at this show I hope they get caught and arrested before the show. Last thing we need is some moron with a gun.

The wagon train idea seems too conscipuous. Hah, what do you think the police will think when they see that?

We better have an excuse. Don't bring a gun. And don't get caught with anything illegal. I don't want to miss any shows because some idiot gets arrested and somehow drags me into it.

Hate to be the one to poop on the "wal mart parking lot camping" party but uh...don't you think someone might get just a little bit suspicious about 5-15 people socializing in a parking lot for several hours? It's one thing to pass out in your car in a lot, but drawing attention to yourselves as a group probably isn't the best idea.

Have you guys considered like...maybe talking to some people from the area, and maybe asking for their permission to park in front of their house, and sleep there? I dunno...it might just be crazy enough to work.

Vericuester
02-18-2007, 03:23 AM

you're allowed to sleep in walmart parking lots, it's like part of their..thing. they allow it, people have schlepped across the country sleeping in walmart parking lots. ultimately it's walmart's deal whether or not you're allowed to sleep in their parking lot, not the cops'.

SubBass49
02-18-2007, 12:44 PM
true...go into the walmart ahead of time and ask to speak to the manager...tell them the situation and ask permission...they would be the ones that'd hafta call the cops if something went wrong anyway...

-- J

SubBass49
02-18-2007, 12:45 PM
they'd probably be cool with it as long as you parked near the back of the lot so that shoppers could still find spots.

Botrocker
02-18-2007, 12:50 PM
Don't worry you guys. Staying in your car is chill. I did this the past 2 years and had no problems except some trouble finding restrooms.

If any of you wanna know a chill secret spot to park overnight just message me and I'll give you the directions.

Oh and by the way I've never seen police, gangsters, tweekers or lurkers while sleeping in my car at coachella.

Sadly, to put myself through University I worked at a Wal-Mart, and they encourage people staying in the parking lot (atleast they did here). They figure that the people will come into the store and spend their cash. It happened numerous times while I was employed there.

Also, the good thing about that is that Wal-Mart has security cameras in the parking lot as well.

SubBass49
02-20-2007, 03:37 PM
I think ya'll will be OK...like I said, just talk to the manager and let 'em know what's going on so they dont get freaked. Karli said they were usually cool with it. Just don't get rowdy and stuff...and remember, even though the cops wouldnt be able to bust ya for tresspassing, they could still get ya for pulic intoxication or posession of "illegal" items (pipes with weed res, herbal refreshments, etc)

just a thought.

.

yeah because people who live in coachella are completely clueless that a festival with more than 1000494948383844 people attending is taking place across the street. 5 people hanging out in the parking lot will raise lots of suspicion.

SubBass49

To anybody that lives in that area -- Are you sure nobody will get fined for sleeping in the Wal-Mart parking lot? Even if it is open 24 hours, wouldn't we be loitering? And isn't it illegal to sleep in your car on someone else' property?
I'm just wondering because I really have no place to stay and I don't want to wake up in the middle of the night by a police officer's flashlight that contains the power of the sun.

SubBass49
03-23-2007, 02:57 PM
Only illegal if the property owner complains. If you get a signed note from the manager that it's OK, show that to the cops or tape it to the inside of your car window so they dont wake you up.

when camping out for the Wii, my friend and i slept in a car in the Wal Mart parking lot, The Wal Mart staff were fine with it (and there were many other car campers) but that may have been because it was only for a night and because we asked them if we could about a month in advance.

i'm sure that if we ask the manager in advance
and if he (or she) gives us the go
and if we stay in the side lot or back of the lot or just out of the way
and if we mind our manners
then all will be fine

It can work, I did that in 2004 because everything was booked. Camped out off a random side road one night, slept in my car the next night on some random street in Indio. Though I had someone with me, which made me feel safer. Never was hassled by cops. But holy hell was it hot and bright so early. Just be prepared to be very groggy, and bring money for serious caffiene.

oh, and for the record, for those that don't know Walmart has a policy to be a place for overnight camping/parking in their parking lots. RV people do it all the time. For those that have done the RV circuit can attest to it.

Hey guys....
I've lived here since 1977..
I pretty much know what you can and cant get away with.
That said, In any city limits,(la Quinta, Indio) the local cops may ask you to move if they see you.
I know this for a fact since I once had to sleep in my truck.

One place that might work out for you guys would be just east of the Loves truck stop.
From the polo fields, head east on ave. 48 for a few miles.
You'll cross the rail road tracks, the 86 expressway and I-10.
Ave 48 changes to Dillon Rd at the RR tracks.
Now just east of the truck stop is a large field where trucks sometimes park.
There are food places 24 hrs as well as showers in the Loves for a few $'s.
If you continue east on Dillon rd. for another 1-2 miles you will cross a canal.
Past the canal is another area off to the left where you might be able to get away with parking.
Anything on the east side of I-10 might be more user friendly than back in the city.
It might be best to check out some of these places during daylight hours so you dont end up getting stuck, lost or hurt.
Those of you that have laptops, check out the area around I-10 & Dillon Rd. for a better idea of where the roads go.
Remember, dont make a huge scene, pick up after yourselves and dont fuck with anyones private property.

Good luck and if you get in trouble or stuck, get a message here on the board somehow.
I'll check back often and dont have a problem helping someone out.
