I was thinking about starting a "David Bowie Show Memories" thread and found this one to bump instead. Also, this one's more general so we can ALL participate, even if you haven't experienced the magic of a Bowie show. If you have, though, I'd LOVE to hear about your experience.

Mine...My first time seeing Bowie was at the Area 2 festival at the Gorge in Eastern Washington in August of 2002 when I was in graduate school.

I positioned myself carefully towards the front during Busta Rhymes' set and then made my move when everyone went who-the-fuck-knows-where when Busta ended. Did they go to get a beer? Nachos? Was it worth it, kids?

Anyway, got like 6 people away from the stage, front and center. Bowie came onstage and I literally almost passed out from the incredible feeling of being in his presence. That sounds ridiculous, I know, but Bowie had been (and still is) my idol since I was little. He had his hair short and he was wearing a suit and tie and looked absolutely gorgeous. Exactly as I had pictured and wanted him to be and it was only like the 5th time he'd played in the U.S. in the last 5 years so I had no idea what to expect.

Setlist:

Life on Mars
Ashes to Ashes
Breaking Glass
Cactus
China Girl
Slip Away
Space Oddity (10 seconds of it and then said, "You didn't think I was gonna go back that far, did you?" and went into next song)--heartbreaking--I think I actually screamed in pain
Fame
I'm Afraid of Americans
I've Been Waiting for You
5:15 the Angels Have Gone
Heroes
Heathen

Two Encores:
I Feel So Bad (Elvis cover to commemorate the anniversary of Elvis' death)
One Night
A New Career in a New Town
Fashion
Everybody Says Hi
Hallo Spaceboy
Let's Dance (danced all over the stage with a gorgeous negligee and threw it into the audience at the end of the song)
Ziggy Stardust (said that the very last time he ever plays in America, he'll play that song last)

Such an almost violently spiritual experience for me. High lasted for months, a hell of a lot longer than any other show I've ever seen.

Also saw him in Seattle at the Paramount Theater (never thought I'd see him at such a small venue--surreal!) and at Key Arena (the following year? can't remember and Lastfm sucks) and those shows were magnificent as well but nothing will ever top the Gorge. Even if he ever plays Coachella (dare I say it?) I'm sure I would have to camp out all day to get even relatively close. Can you imagine that mob? There would never be a "walk up during not-very-relevant-act and get ridiculously close to music god" situation.

SO great. I was in shock when I heard the first few notes because I never thought in a million years that he'd play that one. It's always been one of my guilty pleasure Bowie faves and at the time, my roommate had it on our outgoing answering machine message. Those words sound strange now. haha

it was really fun. never thought i'd see bowie in such an intimate setting (it's a small 950 person theater from the 20's) it rocked pretty hard. reeves was all over the place. he wasn't playing a character...he was just being david jones...a guy in a band. the thing that struck me the most was how much he was enjoying himself. it felt genuine, not a rock star going the motions of another show. when he wasn't singing or playing sax, he'd sort of sit back and just watch...and smile. yeah, he's got the charisma and all that, but it's those subtleties that stick with me after all these years.

the man is the real deal.
