i think he said they'll do half. the flaming lips don't usually play too many songs. i hope they dig further back into their catalog.

Good point. A long FLips set is like 15 songs.

Enthusiasm for Life Defeats Existential Fear - whoa. i like how they chose to play a song that hardcore fans requested instead of a song that was in popular demand. very cool.

what?? they've played it every one of the four times I've seen them.

I don't like this naked version of it though. not in concert, anyway. they'll do the same with yoshimi.

I know but what did you honestly expect? The diehard Lips fans only make up about 5% of the audience here I'm sure... and outside of that I'm sure everyone just likes the same group of 15-ish songs... it's cool that Wayne did songs that were voted in at #66 because he's aware that only the passionate fans would even own and listen to the album that whatever that song was came from.

I like Yoshimi quite a bit actually, but then they did another album that sounds like The Soft Bulletin but not as good. Diminishing returns from such a relentlessly shifting band should probably be expected, but it's still disheartening.

07-19-2009, 09:37 PM
I saw them first about a year after Yoshimi came out, and it was fantastic. They've been on a downhill slope since then, it's seemed. Every show has seemed more theatrical and less musical. I'd go to theater for that, not a concert.

schoolofruckus
07-19-2009, 09:46 PM
Point taken, but when I saw them last at Monolith 2007, they played for almost two fucking hours with very little horsing around. Sure, there was tons of confetti, beach balls, fireworks, etc., and he definitely tried climbing up Red Rocks in the bubble. But for the most part, they were there to play songs, and they played a ton of them. I think that show was longer than all three previous times I'd seen them (Coachella, Hollywood Bowl, and NYE at USC) combined.

I just don't get why everyone thinks they're going downhill...

They've been around for 25 years now, put out 11 full-length albums, and the last one they did wasn't as good as the two that came before it. It's one thing if a band is in a continuous uphill movement towards greatness and they suddenly stop their climb to the top in a new album that's pretty mediocre... but the band has a put out a couple other lackluster LPs in the past, too. They've never been gloriously consistent. And is At War With the Mystics an atrocious album? No, it's second-rate... it's definitely not outstanding but it has a couple moments.

Is it all just the live show?

bmack86
07-19-2009, 10:02 PM
Nope. Yoshimi was good, but not great. I like it quite a bit (and a large part of that, I'm sure, is that I was in high school when it came out and it sounded so fresh) but it's nowhere as good as The Soft Bulletin. It's derivative of that album, and Mystics continued that trend. Not something they'd ever been accused of before, and the ep they sent to ticketholders for forthcoming shows suggests they've moved beyond that sound.

But the live show has become cloying at this point. Play more songs, please.

pancakespancakes
07-19-2009, 10:10 PM
Yeah, I'm not familiar with their older albums at all, I'm sure that would change my opinion of their current state (as it should). I'm actually not very familiar with their current material either... just an outsider to the band. But I was kinda curious.

All my friends that love them also discovered them through Yoshimi, during high school, that might be why their current stuff is so meaningful to them too...

Just back from an awesome Pitchfork weekend. Some really great sets the past couple days (Flaming Lips, M83, Beirut, The National, The Antlers...). The Lips are going downhill? Seriously? Yoshimi is a great album and their live show continues to be a blast. Last night was my fourth Lips show and happened to be favorite one.

Faxy, Saturday was my first time seeing The National and I really loved the set. Very impressed. Tough to follow that Beirut show, though, wow.

It's pretty strange criticism to say that Yoshimi and Mystics are derivative of The Soft Bulletin. The Soft Bulletin was derivative of the 8 Flaming Lips albums that came before it. Almost any non-debut release is going to derive from previous work. I get what you're saying - you think The Soft Bulletin was their best album and no album since has measured up. I just find your word choice to be cloying.

You misinterpret.

Yoshimi drew more from The Soft Bulletin than The Soft Bulletin drew from all previous Flips albums. Yoshimi may be a good album but on it we hear different variations on what the Flips did for The Soft Bulletin.

The Soft Bulletin was a sea change for the band. The shift can be seen in lyrics, it can be seen in the music and arrangements. It's like they took what they learned when making Clouds Taste Metallic and Zaireeka and went an entirely different direction with that foundation.

Yoshimi is like they listened to The Soft Bulletin and said, whoah, people liked that; we can do that again!

bmack86
07-21-2009, 07:45 PM
That's correct. Prior Flaming Lips albums were more rough and "rock" than The Soft Bulletin. On that album, they definitely upped the lushness and the almost symphonic psychedelia became a great way to express the humanity in Wayne's lyrics. Yoshimi does the same thing, but not quite as well, and Mystics is similar in that respect.

This weekend was pretty amazing, despite getting a te start due to NIN putting tickets onsale while Friday was happening. The Jesus Lizard killed it, Built To Spill was ok, everyone liked to talk a lot instead of watching them play, it kind of killed the vibe. It rained a bit on Saturday and everyone cheered, while a zillion umbrellas popped out for 10 mins, then went back down. Highlights of course Beirut, Doom was great, Fucked Up tore it up early on. Ponytail got the crowd going so much that part of the railing broke. The Black Lips killed it too. The National were good too, Ill watch their full set in NY for sure.

For now....

Picture and review time:

So we left around 1 pm Thursday afternoon and arrived around 7 pm. Traffic as usual sucked getting into the city (took an hour) but once we were in it was easy to get around. It was my best friend's birthday Friday but we decided to go out for a good meal on Thursday night since we'd be at the festival the rest of the weekend. So we went to a steakhouse that I can't remember the name of now but there were these 32 oz rib-eyes that were the best steaks any of us had ever had

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/oo156/stinkbutt-fart/Pitchfork/IMG_3477-1.jpg

We ended up bar hopping and then went to bed.

Friday

We wondered the city during the day went to the Art Museum, then over to Grant Park (lolla grounds) which is way bigger than I remember, then to the lake.

Then on to the festival where Tortoise was playing first. Tortoise was a very tight live band and played everything I wanted to hear. I was a little worried at first I would get bored during their set but I didn't it was just really good post rock and a nice mellow way to start off the night.

Tortoise (8/10)

Yo La Tengo we just kinda sat back and watched while we ate and drank beer which much to my dismay was now 5 dollars instead of 3 like last year. Still a decent deal when compared to Coaachella prices.

Yo La Tengo (7/10)

It started to rain while we were waiting for the Jesus Lizard to start which got me excited because singing "Seasick" in the rain seemed like a good time, but it stopped by the time they hit the stage. This was my most anticipated set of the weekend and they did not disappoint it was the best set of the weekend for me. Even though they were probably the oldest people there this weekend they easily had the most energy David Yow spent a good time of the set in the crowd. They played an amazing set, everything anyone wanted to hear they did.

The Jesus Lizard (10/10)

After The Jesus Lizard we were all beat so we just sat back for Built To Spill. I'm really not a huge fan of them but after seeing them live I may have to go back and listen again. Sounded really tight like they had been playing together for a long time and according to my buddy Dan who is a big fan played quite the setlist.

Built To Spill (6/10)

We went to the Fucked Up aftershow later that night at this really interesting venue called Subterranean this place was really dark and dingy but had a neat observation deck from the second floor. That's where we were the opening bands for Fucked Up were awful and all sounded the same but I guess that's how Punk goes. Thank goodness Fucked Up was much better and while not a huge fan of the music the stage presence was great

The National were good too, Ill watch their full set in NY for sure.

wow. this makes me feel like i was there. and these bands play "rock 'n' roll" music, you say?
