View Full Version : So what happened with Neil Young?

He was so heavily rumored and, well, obviously he isn't on the lineup. Or any other lineup, for that matter.

Yeah, they can, but they'll never ever play Coachella. And Neil Young was apparently not supposed to be a headliner, anyway.

See the trouble was that Neil would only play if Radiohead were there and when they said no he said "fuck this shit! I am going to write an album about ecofriendly cars!".

Blinken

Yeah I think Paul T realized that all Neil wanted to sing about was cars, so he said fuck it.

U2 are just so difficult to work with for festival organisers. Glastonbury tried for years to get U2-the only sticking point was U2 did not want their set to appear live on TV or radio because they like to own all the rights and have the final edit on the pictures and sound. They like to make sure they look good!

as blinken said it makes sense for the delay...also Glastonbury never paid their headliners like Coachella does so maybe that is why they can talk. Also and this is the final point. U2 is going all out to try and promote this album. What better what to promote your album then with the 1st major international (because that is what Coachella is now) music festival and start off on a high note? There are so many signs pointing to this that I will be shocked if U2 don't get added...that being said...I think it is 50/50.

Glastonbury doesn't pay as much as Coachella, but Glastonbury's profit is for the chosen charities. This has not stopped Glastonbury attracting huge headliners because the publicity of headlining Glastonbury is huge-it is broadcast live on national TV and radio. So in terms of reaching a mass market of 60 million in the UK, Glastonbury headlining is free publicity. A Glastonbury appearance usually boosts album sales in the following weeks.
I'd love u2 to headline but sadly I can't see it. The exclusive LiveNation contract would seem to scupper this too!

Live Nation doesn't have a live event on the scale of Coachella or Bonnaroo in the US. And as I started U2 are going all out to try and sell this record.

Thanks mang, its not really hope. I honestly don't care for U2 but I would watch them if they were there. I don't think I would ever pay tickets to see them at their own show so this would be my only chance. I just try to keep my ears to the ground and listen. I did see Paul McCartney as a headliner before it was announced simply because it made sense and they was a lot of talk. Funny thing is my wife and I talked about U2 at Coachella for a while already and this just seems like the year. Again if it doesn't, it doesn't matter to me. I will probably watch the Killers. ;)

Liking Neil Young ≠ Undiscriminating taste in music

If the guy had said he doesn't care for his voice/whine or whatever, fine. Lots of people feel that way about Neil's music. He has a very unusual and sometimes abrasive voice, much like Bob Dylan.

But to call him boring? And create a thread about it? Giant ignorant FAIL.

thats between Jim and Rod-Patton would most likely be down-why else would Kerrang! have article about it?
Jim was trippin cause of Rods orientation-im figuring theyd squash it,besides they probably need the end$

Live Nation doesn't have a live event on the scale of Coachella or Bonnaroo in the US. And as I started U2 are going all out to try and sell this record.

the simple fact of the matter is you can get 50,000 people into a large football stadium. festivals are not the #1 exposure vehicle. U2 will not be plyaing, and neither will anyone else with a live nation contract. thank god.

From what I know, he was in active discussions and for whatever reasons it collapsed very late. I honestly think he didn't fancy it-especially when he is getting courted to headline several festivals in Europe, notably Glastonbury.
To be honest I expect he might already be a strong contender or already signed for Coachella '10.
