Conqueror is a fantastic album. The Silver ep is amazing too. They played a show with Wolves in the Throne Room a year and a half ago; that was something else.

I don't love the self-titled album, though. Do I need just more time on this?

Dear Metal Thread,

My boyfriend is really into Scandinavian prog metal like Opeth and Dark Tranquility. I'm trying to get into it a bit so that we can have some common ground musically (and I always like to expand my tastes), but it comes off kind of cheesy to me. I like my metal down and dirty and usually sludgy, and this stuff is just too clean. Do I just need to give it more time, or am I right and it's actually really cheesy?

pancakespancakes
05-18-2009, 04:33 PM
I am a big Opeth fan, (or was), but yes, I find that much of their work is way too clean and that is why I gravitate to it less and less as time goes on. Much of it just borders on the cheesy side unfortunately. But when it's good, it's great.

I think their album Blackwater Park, their most most famous album, may very well be their most sludgy as well. But I can't remember...

But no, I don't think it needs time. It is what it is.

Drinkey McDrinkerstein
05-18-2009, 04:41 PM

You are right. It's shit.

but...

R3bvTRs7p74 I just sat here for 8 minutes waiting for this dildo to do something...WTF?

Suffacated met these guys at the Ozzfest one year. Motorgrater. He ended up befriending the lead singer, Ivan, and we followed him to afew LA shows. Plenty of stage makeup and theatrics, but unfortunately plenty of drama and politics broke them up. Huge bummer considering I had never quite experienced this type of metal before and actually liked them.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uWNAzMyDv58&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uWNAzMyDv58&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
After Motorgrater split ways, Ivan, who has experience in everything from this screaming metal to church gospel, got together with some guys to form F.F.D.P. Because of Ivan, we followed them to the Key Club and Viper Room in LA, House of Blues in San Diego, and last year drove to Las Vegas to see them in some local dive bar to a packed house.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/415441ncq1A&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/415441ncq1A&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Pretty amazing to have watched these guys grow in fanbase and we certainly wish we could continue following them...We just can't afford Europe just yet! I came acrossed one video that regardless of the metal and screaming, I was simply in tears watching the enormous crowd in attendance! To the top, you KNUCKLEHEADS!!!

actually i would have to agree with him. metal is just garbage i will be completly honest when i was a in my youth i would remember listening to metal. such as black sabbath, slayer, metalica, etc. It slowly just got worse and worse, the most recent metalica album was by far the worse of any of theirs. So there is a rumor floating around of a Metallica/Megadeth/Anthrax/Slayer tour

hopefully it's true

Kerry King said this

"I’ve heard people referencing Lars,” says King. “I don’t know Lars that well and I haven’t heard it from Lars but apparently he’s talking to somebody about it. Maybe us, Metallica, Megadeth (and), I think he even threw in Anthrax and I said in this day and age, I know we had that time together but how do you leave out Machine Head? There’s better options than Anthrax and that’s nothing against Anthrax, but they’ve just been in pieces for quite some time and that doesn’t make as much sense to me."

rage patton
09-15-2009, 05:53 PM

So I was really hoping to do Roadburn this year especially after I saw what the lineup was so far:

Enslaved, Trinacria, Dream of An Opium Eater, Goatsnake, YOB doing 2 sets, Mouth Of The Architect, Triptykon, Thorr’s Hammer, Comus, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Karma To Burn, Shrinebuilder, Moss, Altar of Plagues, Brant Bjork & The Bros, Yakuza, Nachtmystium,

Candlemass will perform their classic album, “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus” in its entirety with Johan Längquist on vocals. There will be a special part of the set that incorporates new singer Robert Lowe as well

Enslaved/Shining (NO), playing their Armageddon concerto

Tom Gabriel Warrior, founder of the illustrious Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, has agreed to act as the curator for our festival on Friday, and host a special event at Roadburn, called Only Death Is Real.

then I saw the dates are the same as Coachella

i used to like Throwdown. They were ahead of the curve as far as new school tough guy hardcore was concerned, a lot better than Hatebreed and the ilk

Paul, if you're looking for metal-tinged hardcore like Throwdown, check out On Broken Wings and Remembering Never. RN's album "women and children die first" is especially good

some new actual hardcore records i've been digging lately are "miscarriage" by Virgins (ex-New Mexican Disaster Squad) and "hell is empty" from Ruiner.

As for metal, got the new Between The Buried and Me but haven't listened to it yet

@Stinkbutt regarding Baroness - yes, that track sounds very Alice In Chains thanks to the vocal harmonies...very "jar of lifes" era AIC

@MuseRadio - I was practically rail for Mastodon's performance of "crack the skye" at Coachella and it was brilliant! I'll be at the 11/20 palladium show as well. I'm a bit peeved their pretty much still just doing CTS, but I only paid $10 for the ticket after fees and i'm stoked on Converge, High On Fire, and Dethklok too. I've been able to see Mastodon tour for every album since remission so i have seen almost every song they've done life save for Lifesblood/Call of the mastodon stuff

The Slayer and Megadeth US tour has been put to rest. The tour was officially cancelled today because singer Tom Arraya needs urgent back surgery.

Australia was lucky. The tour did make it down under but the US dates to promote the new Slayer album ‘World Painted Blood’ happened later.

The US, Canadian and European dates for the tour have now all been shelved.

Here is the official announcement:

"Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot," said Slayer's manager Rick Sales, "but they just haven't handled the problem, so he's biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month."

This difficult decision made by the band's bassist/vocalist Tom Araya means the cancellation of Slayer's immediate tour plans that include the American and Canadian Carnage Tour dates that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band's UK/European headline tour scheduled for March and April. Booking agents for both Slayer and Megadeth are already hard at work rescheduling the tour dates; tickets already purchased for these shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.

Disappointing.

Kinda drunk and bumping threads, so excuse me if I don't make the most sense.

I'm not sure if I have made it apparent but I absolutely fucking hate grind, and to add even more to that I despise Pig Destroyer. That was until I picked up this

http://reversecurrent.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/pig_destroyer_natasha_cover.jpg

Pig Destroyer "Natasha" I know it's not grind at all and that's probably why I love it. This album is heavy, really fucking heavy. I didn't think that techy bastard Scott Hull could do anything else, but this makes most doom look juvenile. So I started looking into other things he has done besides his grind bands and found a score for a film he did

Scott Hull "Requiem"

http://www.metalsucks.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/requiem.jpg

for the most part soundscapes that are just incredible and the rest is almost sort of poppy lying on the beach songs.

Haven't listened to PD in a while. I need to check this one out.

For people who DO like the genre, this is probably my favorite grind album:

Has anyone seen Liturgy live? I'm seeing them Wednesday and I can't wait but I'm curious whether they'll meet my rather high expectations or not.

I know most of you aren't into metal this heavy but is anyone going (or already went) to the Summer Slaughter tour?

The lineup:

Decapitated
Faceless
All Shall Perish
The Red Chord
Veil of Maya
Decrepit Birth
Vital Remains

Bunch of my friends went to the Summer Slaughter show here and said it was great. I'm especially a big Decapitated fan, but was skeptical about the band after Vitek's death...apparently they were still great.

seandigi

That's good to hear. I saw them once with Vitek and they were flawless. Watching him warm up on before their set was like another drum solo. Sad that he died in that accident.

Yeah, Decapitated was great last night, so was Decrepit Birth and The Faceless. All Shall Perish sucks, as does Veil of Maya. The Red Chord was alright. The only band I wanted to see and missed was Cephalic Carnage. The thing went from 2:30 pm to midnight. Definitely worth it for $20. Oh and Mr. Dibbs (hip hop) was hanging out at a bar nearby afterwards. I talked to him for a minute, nice guy.

Russian Circle, Isis, High on Fire, Neurosis.

bmack86
08-08-2010, 02:08 PM
Check out Harvey Milk's work. They're darker and more sinister than those bands, but they mine a similar vein. You might also really enjoy Sleep-Holy Mountain, which was one of the more awesome Sabbath influenced metal records. Another in that vein, only in my mind much better, is Saint Vitus-Born Too Late. They were a band that toured with Black Flag quite a bit when they were around, and they were really slow and heavy.

Oh, and also you'll probably love High on Fire. The new one, Snakes for the Divine, is as good a place to start as any.

Russian Circle, Isis, High on Fire, Neurosis.

Why'd you edit off Sleep?

And these are all great suggestions, barring the fact that I've not heard much Russian Circle. Neurosis is one of the best metal bands around.

I don't know, it just didn't seem to fit with the others. Also, Opeth. Definitely check them out.

I'm seeing Russian Circles open for Boris at a venue that's perfect for them on Wednesday. I hope this lives up to my expectations, even if it doesn't come close, it will still be an awesome show.

That's the one I have on. I really like it actually.

A few months ago I was cruising around last.fm and looking at similar bands to Baroness and Mastodon and the others I mentioned and these guys were recommended to me. I am finally listening to it today. Also recommended were some of the names you guys have offered, so yeah. Good stuff. Brandon officially likes metal. Strange times.

Drinkey McDrinkerstein
08-08-2010, 03:43 PM
Yeah, Meanderthal is fucking great.
