I support Cake so long as they don't conflict with something like Primus like at Outsidelands. That's like the 6th time I didn't see Cake.

I have a feeling they sound nothing like what their highly produced albums sound. vocals, instruments and all...

I've seen videos. They look like they're pretty good live.

I've seen them quite a few times, mostly because they played at about 85% of shows in the bay are from 1995-2000. They aren't terrible and they sound more or less just like their recordings. Also, I'd be happy never seeing them again.

The cake is a lie!

Also, at Inland Invasion a couple years ago the announcer made a mistake and said that Cake was coming on next and I got all excited. Then Oasis came out and I was so disappointed. I joined the thousands of people who decided that was a good time to leave.

when cake tours, though, they often do very weird cities ya know, and their unlimited sunshine tour can be pricey with bands many dont want to sit through.

also cake shows, at least in california, sell out really fast making it hard to get tickets.

i mean radiohead is always on tour and people have no problem brining them up every 3 minutes....

Sorry, maybe it was my brief stint at SDSU before transferring to UCSD, but it seemed like every other 'brah' on campus loved Cake, 311 and Jack Johnson.

I don't get the appeal of Cake, they just seem so perfectly average. But, obviously they appear to have some support on here, so I'll just hush up now.

Eh guess I'm the only one who doesn't like Cake.

No, trust me ... there are legions on our side of the fence. If they were at Coachella I'd be happy for the Cake lovers on this thread, but I would make it my personal mission to be at the opposite end of the polo grounds at the time of their set. I'd go so far as to say that I'd wander the port-o-potty maze for 45 minutes to ensure that I wasn't exposed to any of their patented joke rock.
What’s next? Barenaked Ladies?

I would be stoked to see Cake added. I'm not sure why they have not played here in the past. I think they would totally fit in with their unique sound... I have seen them twice in small venues and they are very entertaining live.

I was pretty stoked, yet baked when I saw them @ Inland Invasion...can anyone confirm that "the Distance" was even on their playlist? For some reason I have this memory that they didn't even play their seemingly most popular song...I want to blame the oven inside my head, but I need proper closure.

you, sir, are a dumbass and obviously have heard a few cake songs on the radio and are passing judgment based on that.

their music is not joke rock at all, to even compare them to barenaked ladies is uneducated.

i am sure you didnt know they are a huge environmental band, give away cherry trees and such to fans, have a completely green studio, and write songs about there being too much carbon monoxide and stuff.

yeah they do have a few "joke" songs. but i don't think they were joking around much when they wrote "i bombed korea every night"...

You pain me ... let me 'educatify' you:

1) I worked with card carrying members of the Cake fan club in 1997/1998 so I am both highly familiar with those that typify their fan base -- I met their Cake pals as well -- and the whole of their catalog up to that point in time (accounting for 3/5 of their total album output)

2) A moderately scientific qualitative study of friends and acquaintances indicates that approximately 80% of the Cake album owners also claim ownership to a Barenaked Ladies record. While this may not typify the whole of the Cake fan base, it certainly colors my perceptions.

3) While I am an environmentally conscious guy, the green tendencies of the band fail to make their music more listenable. Shoot, Dave Matthews sells logo-ed hemp bags (and dumps his tour van waste in Chicago water ways), does that make you more inclined to have a good sit down and get into the debatable aspects of his music? Of course not.

4) You may assert that Cake has lots of heartfelt songs that involve no jokes whatsoever, but if you're look at the songs that define popular perceptions of the band you must deal with The Distance, a terrible cover of I Will Survive and Rock 'n Roll Lifestyle to get to the rest of their material. Quite simply, it's hard to imagine why folks would make the effort.

But look, at the end of the day if you're excited about Cake and they happen to grace the lineup, good for you. Again, I'll avoid that stage like the plague but I'm simply one ticket buyer in 60,000. But if you asked me to bet, I'm willing to wager that the large majority of the 60,000 ticket buyers are dumbass enough to spend their time with other bands that are a bit more deserving of their attention.

Enjoy your festival.
