View Full Version : Kanye to put out GLOW IN THE DARK TOUR book (...!)

from pitchfork:

Real talk: Kanye West's 2008 Glow in the Dark tour was the sort of pop spectacle we don't get to see nearly often enough anymore. It was a conceptually rigorous, utterly batshit concert-as-narrative that found Kanye ignoring the crowd and instead talking to a fake spaceship computer with Esthero's voice. The special effects were nuts, the stage design looked incredibly expensive, and the rearranged songs found room for kettle drums on every track. No other rap star in history would conceive of an arena tour in which he was the only guy visible onstage for a full two hours, and Kanye absolutely pulled it off.
This thing was closer to Disney World's Star Tours ride than it was to, say, Jay-Z's Hard Knock Life tour. Actually, it was probably closer to some old-school art-rock eyeball-destroyer like Bowie's Glass Spiders tour than it was to either of those. Also Rihanna's opening set ruled. I loved it. And now Kanye's turning it into a book.

The way E! Online describes it, the forthcoming Glow in the Dark tome will be a sort of deluxe coffee table thing with photos and conceptual sketches and set lists. The book will also include a CD of the symphonic interlude-music from the show and an interview with Spike Jonze (co-director of the "Flashing Lights" video). Rizzoli New York is set to publish the book in October.

A book of pictures from the tour is kinda cool.
What would be cooler is a DVD of the show! And/or a live CD.

What exactly is this "symphonic interlude-music" stuff.
It's been a while since I saw the show, but I don't remember much interlude music, or at least not enough to put on a CD.

Oh, he is releasing a DVD, but it is going to be about Kanye's process writing the book. There will most likely be some Reading Rainbow-style sections and the bonus material will consist of bloopers from his "only available in Asia" bi porno.

Kanye is the voice of all our generation. When he speaks, he speaks for me, he speaks for you... he speaks for us. He speaks for them. Embrace him. Cherish him. Wear him on your shirt, and show your appreciation for him. Kiss him, as he hangs in the posters on our walls--the walls of youth.

Was I at like a special show or something in Tampa?
The whole show was amazing (setting aside Kanye, the person. And setting aside the one hot mess at Bonnaroo).

I loved that he was the only person on stage.
A sort of welcome change from rappers and their fucking hype men.
Not that i'm hating on hypemen or anything, but i hate when rappers perform and they are just shouting and sound like shit and let the hype men cover for them half the time.

I know that at some shows, Kanyes band was on the stage but covered by a wall of sorts to the side, and some shows they were nestled in the orchestra section below the stage.

My father and his father were hypemen. I'm studying to be a hypeman at school. I take great offense to this.

Hunter, it was the stupidest, dumbest, lamest, most ridiculous thing I've ever witnessed with my own two eyes. I was embarrassed for Kanye, and it was never once awesome. Remember, Im a Kanye fan (I mean I was THERE, right?) and I was most excited for his set next to raconteurs. The way he was talking to that stupid ass screen, the paper mache space rocks, the empty stage. Truly awful

The stage wasn't empty.
It was supposed to look like a barren planet n stuff. he was pretty much on a slant the whole show. Stage looked awesome. I had orchestra seats, as opposed to the possible large distance you may have had (i dunno).

the spaceship thing was a little cheesy, but eh.
the only thing that truley was unnecessary was the puppet/mannequin thingy that came down on strings.

We didnt get any cool stuff man. It was a BARE BONES production, and I was very close to the stage. I'm 99.99% sure we were missing a lot of stuff from the usual "glow in the dark tour" shows. Also, pretty fucking stupid throwing tempers and tantrums to have your glow in the dark tour on the mainstage and not ending up performing UNTIL THE SUN COMES UP

Please Hunter, I need you to believe me when I say this was the biggest most epic failure ive EVER seen.

HunterGather
02-05-2009, 05:09 PM
Fine. I understand :)

But i need YOU to believe that the show that I saw in Tampa was somethin' kinda special.
Didn't start late, didn't complain, vocals sounded great, no technical problems, great crowd, great stage setup, great visuals, great lighting.

I even almost risked missing NIN at Lolla to see Kanye again (fortunantly i didn't and lucky me, cause he used the stripped down stage setup for that show...which is fine and lovely, but i kinda fell in love with the original stage....ranting I am.)

The book comes out tomorrow.
It comes with a cd of 5 tracks. He threw some instrumentals on there from the tour. I wish he would have put on there more, but eh.

Its got the instrumentals for
-Hey Mama
-Jesus walks
-Touch The Sky
-I Wonder/Good Morning/Heard 'Em Say mix
-and a "kanye digital girl verse"

The Good Morning part was one of my fav parts of the show, but i also would have liked the instrumentals of Flashing Lights and Can't Tell Me Nothing from this tour.

I saw this tour twice...in SD in April near the beginning of the tour and in AZ, right before Bonnaroo...I was 10th row in SD and back of the seats for AZ and AZ was 10x better...everything including Lupes' set were just way better...this was one of the best productions i've seen sorry.

As far as these instrumentals...there is no way these were used on the tour...they were thrown together last minute. very simplistic and nowhere close to as epic as the real live versions played...

HunterGather

The mix of I Wonder/Good Morning/Heard 'Em Say were definatly used on the show.
But I think they tracks were just mixed together, becuase even though the actual songs were meshed together in the show, i'm sure it was longer than what is on the CD.

I think its just weird to listen to it on computer speakers/headphones rather than with vocals and a huge sound system.

A DVD of this show needs to come out!

Good rock show > This show > good rap show

Edit: It might not be fair, but seeing the above flyer beforehand I thought it was going to be waaaaay cooler than it actually was. I wanted some MIA mainstage intro type stuff. Some Busta Rhymes- Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See type stuff. Still a good show nonetheless.

On that note, NERD and Busta @ Coachella 2010.

In one of the book’s most fascinating moments, West takes an honest look at his delayed and lambasted performance at Bonnaroo in 2008. A two-page photograph of five port-o-potties with “Fuck Kanye” graffiti-ed on them opens up into a four-page, text-only collection of headlines featuring every major publications’ headlines regarding Kanye’s much-criticized performance (including our very own.) “That was definitely Kanye’s idea. He’s Kanye,” Elderkin says. “He’s a very honest guy, as you can tell.”
