View Full Version : AMANDA FUCKING PALMER

I'm pretty excited she is gonna be there saturday. I was hoping for the Dresden Dolls but I saw her play solo at the Henry Fonda a couple months ago and it was quite amazing. I really hope she plays in one of the tents at night time cause it would more intimate with a killer light show.

VIVA LA AFP!!!!!!

Why isn't Amanda Palmer's music just another Dresden Dolls album? I don't understand that.

Brandwagon6
01-31-2009, 09:28 AM
It basically is minus Brian V. on drums although he did play on her solo album......either way, bad ass live show. She rips on the keys and hopefully she brings the Danger Ensemble to perform while she plays

Whats with the "Fucking" part??

Its on her website as well.

Anyways, I most likely will attend her set if no serious conflict occurs.

did you see how you didn't really answer the question there?

did you see how you didn't really answer the question there?

Amanda Palmer is the main song writer/singer/piano player in
the Dresden Dolls. So without Brian Viglione there on drums it obviously isnt the Dresden Dolls...It's just Amanda Palmer. She will most likely do a few DD tunes and the other stuff she's playing now is her SOLO stuff which is material she decided to do as a SOLO artist. It's pretty much the same style as the dolls...MINUS THE DRUMS.
Her live show is totally awesome and thats all that matters here.
Thank you for asking and have a great day. Hope to see you in the crowd...it's gonna be a grand time.

Stickjohn
01-31-2009, 03:57 PM
Yeah - I'm wondering if she does Dresden Dolls stuff when she performs solo? Guessing not but I'm very interested in checking out her solo stuff more before seeing her.

edit - thanks Brandwagon 6! A few DD tunes would be awesome.

I saw her at the Troubadour and she played for almost 2 hours (versus the 75 measly minutes the Wiltern allowed the Dolls to have three months prior). Played a couple Dolls songs: Coin-Operated Boy and Bad Habit, I believe, and lots of covers, including "Creep" on a ukulele while walking through the crowd.

She does do Dresden Doll stuff on her Solo tour. She's a rare talent. Her lives sets are incredible. She's one of those song writers like Prince, Tori Amos, Bernie Taupin or Martin L. Gore. Amazing!

I'd see her for Girl Anachronism alone. That song is a very catchy mental breakdown. Pity about the lack of drums, though. I caught them last time they were at Coachella and saw that drummer do his best to annihilate his kit... he's a monster.

I am glad to see so much love here. I am a slightly obsessed fan of Amanda and the Dolls. I spend way too much time in the shadowbox.

I have seen the Dolls 3 time and Amanda once at the troubador. The DD shows are awesome because of the interaction between Amanda and Brian, but the solo shows are good because you get to see and feel a little more of what is going on inside Amanda's head and heart. This will be a can't miss show.

Amanda's solo shows are so unhinged that seeing her at a festival, to a strict time slot and set list seems like a porno without a money shot for everyone checking her out for the first time; but she's always delivered a damn good show every time I've seen her perform.

She was utterly fucking amazing. I ran around to meet her from the front to the back as she crowd surfed, and I ended up right where the parade formed so I got a shockingly up-close photo of her as she walked by me which isn't exactly flattering of her, but great none the less. I shall post that sometime in the following days.

Her set blew me away. I followed to the parade to the Do Lab and where she took pictures and met pretty much anyone that was interested in meeting her. She is seriously one of the pleasant people I've ever met. I also think I have a picture or two that I can post later.

I was at this show until her 'Google You' song because my GF is a huge Dresden Dolls fan. I left early to go get a decent spot for the Beetroots but I'm really disappointed I missed this.

I will go on record to say as someone who only knew 'Coin-Operated Boy' and literally NOTHING else about her or the Dolls, that I actually kind of enjoyed the show. She's a great performer, I wish I had stayed the whole time.

I was one of the painted people on stage with her. I put the "U" in fucking! :)

She's an awesome person, but I was a bit disappointed because she seemed to be all business most of the time she spent with us. I think it's mostly because as an artist you have to do a ton of press and don't really get to enjoy the fest like a normal person.

She made my fucking weekend, though. Got a signed CD, a kiss, and a shit-load of memories. If anyone reads her blog, I gave her the carousel horse necklace she wears in that half-naked shot of her in the trailer. She also twittered a picture of it.

If anyone else has pictures, please post because my camera took a shit and died on me the second I tried taking a picture. Thanks.

honestly, i can't think of a better way to spend coachella saturday if there are no bands you're dying to see early. remember that she is an artist and that she has a job to do, not just while on stage. i feel lucky to have even been included. think back to the pow-wow while sitting on the space cape, drinking wine, chatting about set-list requests. doesn't really get more intimate than that.

i only got personal pictures, but there are a few on la times if you search 'amanda palmer coachella.'

Agreed her set was awesome. I'm a fan of hers and loved it - esp the Muse cover. My girlfriend who didn't know anything about her (she was excited about YYY, Lupe Fiasco and Joss Stone to give an indication of her musical taste) even thought she was amazing.

What really impressed her was her engagement with the audience and how she brought a lot of personality to the performance and involved the audience. Also, we bumped into her late Sunday, and she was fun and interesting to talk to in person.

Then again, I think the same thing could be said of Amanda Palmer, who is really effing talented, but for me at least, not attractive...but for alot of people, she is THE SHIT...i just think shes an amazing and inspirational musician but id rather not bone her...

The whole long story if you're interested:

Chocolate Zucchini Cake

Or

How Amanda Palmer came to play in my living Room

It’s probably been about two years since Amanda wrote a blog about the joys of making a Chocolate Zucchini cake in a friend’s kitchen. Many people read the blog, and did not understand the metaphor. Responses came pouring forth either with recipes for Chocolate Zucchini Cake, requests for such recipes, or tales of how delicious these cakes are. They’re not always the most cerebral, free thinking folks (see lemming-like following of stripy stockings, My Little Pony, Ukuleles, et al.

I saw the story of baking the cake for what it was. It symbolized a desire to be free to create at one’s own will…to relax and enjoy what you’re doing with friends. I promptly invited Amanda to bake a Chocolate Zucchini Cake in my kitchen, or to share it with me in my dining room. I received no RSVP.

However, I did not give up. I took every opportunity from that day forth to extend the invitation. Each time a post showed up on The Shadowbox (The Dresden Dolls/Amanda Palmer/ Brian Viglione message board) announcing a tour, I reiterated my invitation. Each time a special show was announce, I cried for my own special event. Each time the question was asked, “Where should Amanda tour next?” I blubbered, “In my living room.” This incessant whining went on for far longer than appropriate. It would have continued had a fine young Irishman Named Ronan Not started this thread in the Shadowbox: http://www.theshadowbox.net/forum/index.php?topic=7409.0
It basically starts off by telling everyone that I am old and bitter and should have Amanda Palmer play in my living room before I die. It turns into what will forever be known as The Robellion.

Not long after this thread got started, I got an email from Beth saying that they saw the thread, and would like to make it happen. This didn’t strike me as totally odd, because I have read accounts of Amanda and the gang staying at other peoples’ houses, and having people bring homemade food to shows for the crew. It did totally freak me out though.

I checked with my family, who said it was cool with them, and we set it up. I emailed and spoke on the phone with Beth a few more times, and on the 17th, they all showed up at my place.

They came and went in a rock star whirlwind. Amanda had press to do, and I took off to the fest. We all regrouped in my living room that night after Sir Paul. Amanda and Zoe rehearsed as we sat and drank beer and geeked out on computers. The next morning, before the show they rehearsed again. That’s when the video was shot. The morning after the show, we just sat in the back yard and ate waffles and drank coffee and talked.

So, That’s how it happened. I gave Amanda and the crew a place to crash for the weekend and some home cooked food, and they gave me and my daughter Coachella wristbands and an experience we will never forget.

Thanks.

so Rob, what's your ceviche recipe?

It doesn't include dorkfish, that's for sure.

It's hard to say, I mostly just eyeball everything.

It's got a couple pounds of Tilapia, marinated overnight in lemon juice of course...a few Roma Tomatoes with the seeds and juice removed- diced, 1 large jalepeno- minced, a couple cloves of garlc also- minced, 1/4 of a red onion- chopped fine, and about 1/2 a bunch of cilantro coarsely chopped. Salt to taste.

Don't forget to add the love.

This was an interview filmed after the secret show she did in LA the Wednesday before Coachella.
It was amazing. At about 34 seconds you get to see the majority of audience that was at the show. There were about 40 of us probably.

Mother of God... this song does something in my brain where it opens up all the desperate, vulnerable memories from my life, those moments when something with so much gravity was descending that it seemed absolutely impossible the world could keep spinning under the immense pressure, and it plays them like a flip book through my brain pan. Just a rotating slideshow of brief moments when there was no possibility of hope... and yet the world continued.
