They either need to rearrange that and switch her with TV on the Radio, or add a big Sahara name to bump her down. I'm gonna hate looking at those big bold letters spelling out her name for 3 months.

Amy Winehouse is being billed as high as bands like Portishead, Daft Punk, Sigur Ros, Bauhaus, The Pixies, and The Chemical Brothers have in the past.

Seriously, how many people are actually going to watch her? How many people knew she actually made music rather than just be a piece of shit for the tabloids to report on? I didn't. I thought she had like, one album maximum. I've never known anybody who listens to her, and I've never heard anybody talking about her unless it's about her drug issues.

FUCK THAT.

Coachellagal!

She deserves to be where she is imo. When she's not all cracked out and disgusting, which hasn't been very often in the last year... she extremely talented. I absoutely love both of her CD's and her voice just amazes me. I truly hope for her sake.. and ours she comes to Coachella and does a FANTASTIC performance. She's had so much bad publicity lately, she needs this for people to remember just how effin rad she really is (musically)!!!!!

Just my two cents! Hehe.

not that i agree with it for coachella... but she was in the same spot for glastonbury last year. she went on before jay-z

...she's just billed as high on the line up as she is high in real life...

Not that those should have a correlation, but that's just what I thought of when I read this thread's title.

I'm surprised that they are wasting time, money and effort on her at all. When is the last time she played a show that wasn't a disappointing disaster. I'd kind of be surprised if she actually showed up at all.

Not that I am a fan of Amy Winehouse but I have a friend who works for a British newspaper and she assures me she has cleaned herself up very well, she is actually running and exercising!
But regardless she is controversial and that in itself will create a buzz around coachella, the media will watch and the casual coachella goer will be intrigued enough to watch a possible car wreck!

It's a confusing choice regardless of where she ends up on the poster. At best she is unreliable. And I wouldn't imagine she's cheap?

Barbara, the ninja

I doubt she'll play. She'll probably have a nervous breakdown or something before Coachella.

idriveawkwardly
01-30-2009, 12:39 PM
I want to see her do something outrageous...I can see the headlines "Crazed Winehouse attacks Brandon Flowers"

far gone and out
01-30-2009, 12:40 PM
if she gets into the USA....she's gonna be great.

i had the chance to see her at a tiny club just before she took off in north america and the woman puts on a fantastic show.

she deserves the slot she's been given.

Guys, have some perspective. She was a subheadliner at Glastonbury last year. Notice the billing:

She FULLY deserves her spot on the poster provided she actually shows up and makes it through her set reasonably coherently.

who gives a fuck about winning a grammy? what the hell does that have to do with placement on the poster?

just as an example, stephen marley has 5 grammys. was he on the second line when played coachella a couple of years ago? no.

Not to mention the crowd is different. There is certainly no rule that says "You headlined at Glaston, you get top billing at Coachella."

chiapet
01-30-2009, 01:02 PM
"Most people"? Is that most people who attended Glastonbury (I don't know how much of the footage you saw but the crowd for Winehouse was ENORMOUS)? Most of the people in the UK? Most of the people in the world? Most of the people on this message board? Most of the people in this thread?

I truly hope that those of you who have nothing to do today but snerk and complain about the lineup just don't come to Coachella at all. Maybe you can go to the Pitchfork Festival?

AlecEiffel
01-30-2009, 01:05 PM
Like I said before, I'm amazed they are wasting their resources on her, she obviously has a less than stellar track record. If she's clean and is actually going to put on a real show rather than struggle and stumble through a few songs and end her set thirty minutes early, then I'd say she deserves that spot. She's very popular and her talent is widely respected. It is a huge IF though. Maybe they know something we don't and she's doing great now, but it just seems like a huge risk.

BeHereNOW

i dont think we will ever see a bigger risk than last yearss JJ and everything whent smooth.... any headliner you dont like is more time you can spend in other stages...

Oh, I'm not denying it's a huge risk, every comment I've made of her has all those "ifs". On the other hand, if she pulls it off, imagine the media coverage for her and the festival.

She is really overrated. Her album lacks consistency. While I admit she has some good songs, the whole package is very lacking.

I honestly think Duffy is a better singer/ and more consistent. And no fucking way Duffy could headline or be that high up.

I think it's a different kind of risk here. Jack Johnson sucks and he is a poor fit for Coachella, but I don't think that there was ever any doubt that he was going to do what he was being payed to do. He doesn't have a history of shows being canceled or disastrous embarrassments because of crack and alcohol.

I'm right there with you, but what a huge is.

I want to like Duffy but she honestly comes across as following Amy rather than surpassing. Which album of Amy's are you referring to with lack of consistency? I'll admit I don't love every track on Frank, but Back to Black is incredibly solid. It had like 7 hit singles in the UK.

chiapet
01-30-2009, 01:19 PM
Alec, do you think it's a bigger risk than Prince last year though? People bitched and moaned about that initially and were sure that he was going to take stage for an hour and preach and play gospel songs. I trust GV.

I do think it's a much bigger risk, because a glance at Prince's setlists from the past 5 years or so (and I'm talking his arena treks, not one off club appearances and things like that) have been consistent and filled with hits. Amy Winehouse is a drunken crackhead who has failed to deliver live for almost as long as she's been famous.
