How Soon is Now is pretty much a staple in his sets.

Boy with a Thorn in His side is another one I think he plays often.

Pretty sure I heard "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" and " Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" ...

I'm sure they are available online if you search.

it goes like this

6 smiths
6 old morrissey
8 from his new albums

and Smiths songs expect, Death of Disco Dancer, Stop me...he wont play something like This Charming Man.

I do hope he does pull some surprises since this is a pretty special festival but then again he also played all the big European festivals and hardly changes his setlist to please the crowd

Yeah, last time I saw him he played "London", which is as close to punk as the Smiths got. His shows are not boring and lean more heavily on upbeat material than on the slower dirgey or -for lack of a better term- ballad type material. The slow stuff is there of course, but by no means dominates the set.

mozfan27
01-30-2009, 01:13 PM
Ive seen him quite a few times, and though they have been the best shows of my life he does tend to start strong and by the middle he is on the mopey ballad, which turns off quite a majority of the audience, but he always ends strong. Plus his new album is a bit more "Your Arsenal" for those in the know so Im hoping that he plays a bit more to his rockbilly style.

Lets finally put The Smiths thing well and truely to rest!

Morrissey scotches Smiths reunion

The singer bemoaned the current crop of musical artists
Former Smiths frontman Morrissey has said that getting back together with the 1980s band is unlikely as he is "not stuck in the past".

The singer, speaking on BBC Radio 2, said: "People always ask me about reunions and I can't imagine why. It baffles me."

He added that he would not reform with The Smiths just "to wrongfoot people".

The 49-year-old performed an intimate session for the station with tracks from his new album and Smiths classics.

Morrissey, who was interviewed by Stuart Maconie, said: "The past seems like a distant place and I'm pleased with that. I feel very much of now."

The musician, whose album Years of Refusal is being released on Monday, said he "does whatever the hell I like".

"I just sing the songs that please me and I don't try to please anyone else. I don't ask people what they think about them."

When asked if he is the same person as the one who sang Smiths hit This Charming Man more than 20 years ago, he said: "I hope to God I'm not."

"I'd be pretty backward because so much time has passed."

Morrissey added that he was unaware of the power his hits have on fans.

In the interview which was recorded before his performance, the singer-songwriter bemoaned the current crop of popular musicians, calling them "dreadful".

"I'm waiting and am hopeful that one person will change everything," he added.

Morrissey is due to appear on Friday's edition of BBC One's Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.

I just listened to a couple Smiths albums this morning (a bootleg of some show from 1985 and The World Won't Listen), and I am getting PUMPED for Morrissey. Ufortunately, most of my Morrissey albums are on cassette from when I bought them in the early 90's, and I'm out of hard drive space, so I'm thinking about digging out my cassettes and breaking out my Walkman knockoff to get prepared.
:pulse :pulse :pulse

I also need to pick up the new one. YAY MOZ.

Great work on the recent set lists, thx.
I have never known anything about Morrissey, so my recent research has been truly groundbreaking, and I gotta say, as a gay guy, I'm especially shocked that I had no idea just HOW GAY moz is. I mean, really gay. I know he's 'asexual' or whatever, but yeah right, pretty obvs, dude is pure homo. Incidentally, the story behind the mid-19th c. British gay dialect used and referred to in Bona Drag, called Polari, is incredibly interesting. For us youthful queers, esp.

That still happens at almost EVERY single show. It's supposed to happen. Happened about dozen times in Columbus Ohio during the last tour alone - festivals are a different animal though

True, the stage invasions still happen once or twice a show, but it's not like in the 80s and early 90s where they were nonstop through out the entire set. Not that people don't still try to get to him, but it's my understanding that he's had the security heightened at his shows because his body can't take being slammed down every two minutes anymore.

I hardly ever see women.

That might have something to do with what area you're in? At all the shows I've been to the crowd has always been predominantly male, but there were still tons of women there too.

In my opinion, that's an act. I think he goads people on, to try and seem like he cares about the audience and their connection with him, all the the while knowing that these people are 99% of the time going to be crushed by a burly security guard. If there is one thing I've learned about from being a Morrissey fan it's that Morrissey does not care about us.

Including his work with the Smiths he has 13 studio albums. Guess what, there are 13 greatest hits albums/singles comps. I'm not even counting rarities/b side compilations like Hatful of Hollow or Bona Drag. This latest greatest hits release being a particular slap in the face to those of us who are loyal fans in that it not only essentially covered only two albums, but it was advertised to us that it had two exclusive new songs...that would appear on an album less than a year later.

Cdub's stage invasion examples have WOMEN in them. When I was much, much younger, I desperately wanted to get on stage, but I guess security must have been really tough then because I don't remember anyone getting on stage. At my first Moz show, there was a spectacular example of a latino guy trying to rush the stage and 5 security guys tackled him -- I guess that would have been my chance to try but I blew it. Now it would just seem ridiculous to do it. And those youtubes are really old. Moz looks great in them.

Oh my God, I don't know who the fuck you think you are but some of your stuff is way off.

Yes he cancels shows and rarely reschedules them but so do a lot of other bands. And nowadays he tours relatively frequently so even if he cancels some shows he's coming back within two years. Not great, sure but a lot better than most other bands that size. I don't see people calling Portishead assholes for playing one US show in 12 years.

You also realize that a lot of those Best Of and compilation albums are the record company tring to sqeeze some more money out of us crazy Moz fans and not Morrissey right? The man has had tons of chances to make a fortune by reuniting the Smiths and he hasn't done it. Yes he's kinda pompous and a bit of an arse but he's not a fucking greedy little wanker or anything.

I think he treats his fans with as much respect as any other big star of that caliber. I mean you can see that just with him playing the old Smith songs. I was at his birthday show in St. Louis a year or two ago and it was phenomenal. The crowd loved him and he loved them right back. Amazing performance. If you want anything more out of a musician than that, then you are really confused.

I'll tell you just who I am. I'm a fan who refuses to blindly accept everything he does and is fed up with the unprofessional behavior of a person that I've given a lot of money to.

Give me examples of any band that cancels anywhere near as often as Morrissey does. He is extremely unprofessional in that regard. The frequency of his tours has nothing to do with it. Portishead is not a viable comparison as they don't schedule tours, sell tickets, get their fans excited then cancel due to "sickness" only to be spotted hanging out in night clubs.

As far as greatest hits packages go, yes, some of them are out of his control but that isn't always the case. If this was something he was so against he would speak up more often, like he did in the case of that DVD release recently. The fact is that he was very involved in the compilation and release of the two most recent repackages, the Sound of the Smiths and Greatest Hits, and those are arguably the most unnecessary so far. He knew we were going to buy the greatest hits for the two exclusive songs and then he went ahead and put them on another album a year later (not to mention 8 of the 15 tracks were from his two most recent albums). In my opinion that was a shitty manipulation of fans, and yeah, pretty greedy.

As far as shows shows are concerned, I agree they are great the majority of the time, and I have only had one bad experience (he threw his hands in the air, sarcastically waved good bye and said something along the lines of "you blew it" because of a stage invasion). One thing I do disagree with you on as far as his shows go is that I don't think he plays Smiths songs to show appreciation to his fans. I think he plays them because his audience is dwindling and he's trying to get people who otherwise might not be interested to show up.

I don't think I expect too much from him, it's not like I want him to know my name and recognize me or anything. I'm still a fan, I love his music and will always try to go see him when he comes through town. I just like people to be reliable and honest when I pay them for something.

I'm going to both and Franz and Morrissey on their respected tours - to avoid such conflicts

I had this same attitude, having seen Franz back at the end of December. but the only issue was that they were really good. and since then i have really gotten into their new album. so now i might be torn to see them again.

so as far as the set list is concerned what do you think we are looking at?
Looking at his set lists on this tour I'm thinking something like this.

1.This Charming Man
2. Billy Bud
3. Black Cloud
4. How Soon is Now
5. Let Me Kiss You
6. I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris
7. Death of a Disco Dancer
8. Ask
9. Something is Squeezing my Skull
10. Mama Lay Softly on the River Bed
11.The World is Full of Crashing Bores
12. Irish Blood English Heart
13. First of the Gang to Die

AlecEiffel
03-24-2009, 09:49 AM
I think some combination of those is probably right on the money. Maybe include "Best Friend On The Payroll". I wish he would change out 'Disco Dancer' for some other Smiths' song, though.

The first time I saw him he played 'Maudlin Street' and it was glorious. It was also the debut of "Irish Blood, English Heart" and "First of the Gang to Die". I'm glad I saw it because his set lists haven't been the same since.

Here it is in case you're interested:

I Want The One I Can't Have / Hairdresser On Fire / Suedehead / Little Man, What Now? / The First Of The Gang To Die / Jack The Ripper / Late Night, Maudlin Street / I Like You / Mexico / Sister I'm A Poet / Alsatian Cousin / Everyday Is Like Sunday / The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores / Meat Is Murder / Irish Blood, English Heart / November Spawned A Monster / Speedway // There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

You see that's fine. I have no doubt that the show sucked and probably a big part was Moz's fault and I feel bad for you and Pasive and anyone else who went. Moz can be an ass, for sure, but he certainly isn't a horrible performer. When I saw him two years ago it ended up being the second best show of the year for me.

Re Cdub's stage invasion vid.

I've seen Mozzer twice and I've never seen stage invasions anywhere near as bad as that.

Row A, on the aisle, perfect for invading a stage. My wife is already dreading going with me... yet again.

Hopefully, I'll get lots more of Moz handshakes and less tackled/thrown on my ass by Arturo (his lead security guy) Which happened during You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side on the last tour.

Morrissey is also selling a limited edition version of the YOR LP which are signed by Morrissey and the band and numbered for each city on the tour (they have anywhere from 20-50 copies for each show from what I've read)
