Yep. He is my #1 (of about 4) sahara act to see this year. I've exhausted his live youtubes already.

Fans of Gui should also check out Supermayer (they're on the lineup). Supermayer is Michael Mayer and Superpitcher, both of whom have played an integral role in shaping minimal into what it is today. They're on the same label as Gui as well, kompakt records, who most notably released the fields "From here we go sublime"

Anyone else have recommendations for more good minimal/tech house?

I know and own CDs by Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y., Gregor Tresher. Together with Gui Boratto I am looking for more stuff like this.

I'm sorta new to this, mostly into D&B.

Donaldj, the two artists I mentioned above are great (Michael Mayer and Superpitcher). I'm really into a lot of artists from kompakt records, a great minimal techno/microhouse label. They've put out compilations every year since 1999 called "Total", which are a great place to start. Another great artist from kompakt is Justus Kohncke.

Besides kompakt another notable artist is Ricardo Villalobos. He's probably one of the better known artists in this genre and I hear is he EXTREMELY good live.

Also, check out Alex Smoke.

There are many many more I am leaving off, but these artists are where I got my start in this genre.

I know he said he wants to get into minimal, but M_Nus and the others he mentioned sound nothing alike. M_Nus makes pretty straight Minimal, Gui Boratto, Booka Shade, Gregor Tresher, etc. make Micro House & Tech House.

The thing I like about electronic music is the repetitiveness of it. I find it quite hypnotic. You can't get much more repetitive than minimal. I quite like the new crop of stripped down minimal drum & bass being produced by the likes of Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Icicle, D-Bridge, Calibre and others...

Monklish
02-01-2009, 03:58 PM
I dunno, I guess I just think a song should go somewhere. It seems so lazy.

kreutz2112
02-01-2009, 04:33 PM
gui is one of the least stripped down repetitive minimal artists. His songs actually do go places and include a lot of signature changes as well as a lot of dynamic ambient sounds. I don't think stripped down is a good way to describe his music.

Chase & Status jump between total cheese to good tracks. Eastern Jam, Street Life, Take Me Away, Hurt You, Smash TV etc are great. Tracks like Music club and Pieces are terrible. There were way better Drum & Bass albums released last year. Here are a couple.

Logistics - Reality Checkpoint
Seba - Return To Forever
London Elektricity - Syncopated City
Calibre - Overflow
D-Bridge - The Gemini Prinicple

a few compilations...

Dat:Music 2 is amazing, lots of minimal, groovy D&B with some dubstep and idm flavored tracks as well. Probably my favorite comp of 2008

The Future Sound of Cambridge Volume 3

All Sounds Electric Volume 2

Gui is going to be awesome, I love his stuff. However, I doubt he'll play a night set, I see them putting him on like they did with Aphex last year, mid day, which is fine.

I kinda wish that Coachella could go later so more of the electronic acts could play in a darker setting. There is something about listening to electronic beats and grooves under controlled and light and darkness.

I know it'll never happen, but I was reading about Bonnaroo going like super late.

Monklish

Oh, wow, okay he did play later, 8pm. Was the sun still up? I just don't remember it being dark. Its all such a blur, anytime I get there is when it starts for me. So, maybe it wasn't mid day, it just seemed like it to me. Though Aphex at 2am is probably a totally different set.

If you mean that Deadmau5 is actually just a shitty Progressive House version of what Gui Boratto and many others do much better, then sure.

God I hope all the Deadmau5 fans don't latch onto Boratto after this.

I wouldn't say Deadmau5 is "shitty", he's very good at what he does, both production and DJing. Having said that, saying Gui Boratto and Deadmau5's music is similar will throw a lot of people off. Gui is mostly techno and minimal and Deadmau5 is mostly progressive and electro.

So if you like Deadmau5, it does not mean you'll like Gui.

I agree - Deadmau5 has only made 2 really good tracks, the harder "Reward is Cheese" and softer "Faxing Berlin". Everything else sounds like a combination of these two. Not to say he doesn't put on a good live show, but you're not really a DJ when you only play your own music. Have you heard his essential mix? Its entertaining , but EVERY song is his own.

That said, Gui Boratto is going to be awesome

as far as minimal techno goes, I'd say Gui Boratto is one of the most accessible names out there.

Listening to Beautiful life, I'm reminded of new order, I could swear that bassline that comes in near the end is a sample from a New Order song but I've listened to all their shit over and over in search of it and it's definitely not, just really gives me that new order vibe I guess.

Here's a link to Gui Boratto's Essential Mix recorded on 03/28/2009.

He mentions that he doesn't know how to DJ so all he does is play live. So I expect this set will be pretty representative of what we hear at coachella.

True. I saw him at DEMF and yes, that's some quality shit. Unfortunately, Golden Voice is not very good at programming the Sahara. Daft Punk was mind-blowing, and a genius booking. But 08 and 09, well... if you are serious and obsessive about electronic music, Coachella leaves a lot to be desired. Seriously, they should call the DEMF guys (Paxahau), beatport, residentadvisor, etc. and ask them what's up.

There is a wealth of great electronic music this year! You are crazy.

The sound quality is top-notch, yes. Coachella has the best sound I've ever heard. I'll have a great time, and I don't need to spend all my time in Sahara. I'm just saying, compare Coachella's electronic music programming to DEMF or some of the foreign festivals. It's subjective of course. But come on - this isn't a surprise.

Well, sure, we all have different tastes. There is at least some good or great electronic music each day.
But this is the same festival that had Tiesto a couple of years ago, on the main stage no less.
Coachella is better at booking other categories of music, than they are Sahara/electronic type stuff. With rock and pop, they find cutting edge, about-to-break acts as well as book established stars. I just don't think they're quite as savvy with electronic. Yes, there are exceptions. But overall, no.
(yes I realize that with electronic music, you don't necessarily want "stars" in the same sense as you do with more popular music - indeed, that's probably the lazy way to book, moreso with electronic.)

I really wish Gui was on Sunday because that's the only day I can go. He is gonna be the shit. At least I get Mandy and the Orb, E.D. and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Optimistic for no YYY Sahara conflicts as I am.
