not necessarily... i think Rogue Wave was last on one of the split day posters last year, and they opened the Main Stage... & Haunted Graffiti isn't last on the poster...

Haunted Graffiti is his accompanying band

Why people think his music is so "obscure" I don't know. It's not that hard to get really. It's just plain good lo-fi "freakout pop stuff

they played a show in miami during art basel in 2007 and they were god awful. He is very particular about their sound and would interrupt at least 8 times throughout the show. This is after having a two hour soundcheck. the whole night was dubbed the 'night of the soundcheck' don't think they translate well live.

Same thing happened at the echo in LA. I overheard the sound guys complaining about him a few nights later.

Some people prefer to create a lo-fi sound...

He released a single recently called "Cant Hear My Eyes" which is extremely clean. I like it despite it not being his usual "sound" and it's pretty accessible

All music is real music. A cow farting is real music. Everything ever is subjective. I love both Leonard Cohen and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti.

The day the world explodes is the day somebody changes someone else's mind over the internet.

When you can't see people's faces, everything sounds like an argument.

Saw Ariel (who is nowhere near female, do your homework) and his band open up for Animal Collective a few weeks ago. Much better than I had expected, especially given the poor reviews some of you have given on his past performances.

I had eaten 1/2 of a pot brownie about an hour ahead of time, and the entire set Ariel had a green recycle/environmentally friendly/whatever it is grocery bag hanging on his arm. That really tripped me out, and made no sense whatsoever.

No longer excited :-|

Pink's tours have generally been met with much negativity, primarily because his music was never intended to be performed live for commercial audiences[14]. As he explained to LA Weekly[2]:

People boo me everywhere...They don't even hide their contempt. I'm used to it now...Hey, I'm giving audiences the real thing...For better or worse, I'm out there, and those are the circumstances. People don't like it when it seems like you don't know what's happening, or I'm getting bummed out with certain aspects and I can't hide it. I think people feel that pain and just think it's bad.

Fuck, I hate this kind of whining. No Ariel, you're not giving anybody "the real thing", you're just being lazy and unwilling to adapt to live shows. It's not that people don't get it-- it's that they watch you fail every single time, and they absolutely get it. The contempt is because you suck, not because people don't understand it. Nobody loves a lo-fi diva.

Bu-but... you were going to an ANIMAL COLLECTIVE show. Come on

Ariel Pink is just lo-fi pop. I really don't understand how anyone can find his stuff challenging on any level, which is not to say I don't like him, cause I do, but if this is confusing to people, I assume most of you are just MTV/radio music whores.

When I saw them open for Flaming Lips they were actually pretty solid. That was 9/18/10, only a few weeks after FYF 2010... I've heard they are hit or miss, so maybe they just had a crappy day.

Agreed; They played only a handful of Before Today songs. The rest I was not familiar with.

I have found myself watch this video 5+ times since I first found it, just his actions and how he portrays the song live.

He's so screwed up on nose candy here too, he's so weirdly-animated, look at his awkward stumbling and pointing to the record at the end. Brilliant!

Seeing him live next Monday, so will let you all know how he is in real life!

I saw them open for the Flaming Lips in September, and they were AWESOME. I didn't even hear any of their records beforehand, and now, I can't wait to see them.
