MassiveChemicalPunk

I JUST WOKE UP and saw this.

As of right now that I have only seen the lineup for 1 min......... I feel sad.

NO: Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx or Kings of Leon........... :(

Oh and to all of those just waking up, Psychic friend has stated in another thread that more Sahara acts are going to be added.

There's not a single Sahara headliner or subheadliner on that poster. There have to be several big adds on the electronic side to get me excited. It's worse than last year's initial poster.

I think its awesomeeee and mcp. pf said they are adding more sahara so dont give up on chem brothers.

Saturday is in need of a major overhaul. Amy Winehouse and Thievery Corporation are not subheadliners.

Also, Ed Banger is better than Dim Mak, which has taken over what is looking like a Gobi-sized Sahara tent this year (I know, I know, more to come...)

Focusing on the positive

Fucking Yeah Fucking Yeah Fucking Yeahs

into MBV?! RIDICULOUS.

01-30-2009, 03:55 AM
Initial reaction? Meh. I think i'll do studying up on MBV finally and will end up looking forward to them quite a bit. I saw the Cure headline Sasquatch last year...not a huge fan but ok. I was very excited to see Calexico on the lineup. Looking forward to Public Enemy and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Mike Patton. So there is some stuff I dig.

Band Of Horses, Cohen, Paul Weller, Black Keys.....awesome.

Although, i would've loved Radiohead....

Still...a good solid line up!

YYYs, MBV and The Cure all in a row is beautiful.

Leonard Cohen..WOW

Superchunk!

Any idea what Henry Rollins is going to do?

Ghostland and the Presets will destroy the Sahara Friday night.

Sahara Lineup is already pretty fun (pre-Headliners).

Biggest Disappointment is that Groove Armada is a DJ SET.

the lineup lacks the WOW factor of past years. The Cure to close the fest? Seriously? Will they hand out razors when we all leave?

Disappointed that Jose Gonzalez is not on the lineup.

Sunday is AMAZING.

Clipse is great. Amy Winehouse too.

I believe for whatever reason, they are holding out on announcing Basement Jaxx or Chemical Brothers.

why would they hold out announcing them? That makes no sense at all. If you have a week electronic line up you NEED them on the flyer to get people to buy tickets.

Dont get me wrong, I HOPE they bring them, but I see no reason for them to have them booked and not say anything about it.

I'm super stoked on Sunday for various reasons:

Hip-hop-ability: The Knux, K'naan, Public Enemy, Lupe
Tent selection isn't half bad: Roni Size, Groove Armada, Junior Boys, fucking Shepard Fairey!
And the obvious top of the bill.

The other days have some gems, but Sunday I'll be sprinting everywhere on whatever little energy I have left.

TommyboyUNM
01-30-2009, 06:07 AM
I'm happy about The Black Keys, Paul McCartney, YYY into MBV into The Cure. Ghostland Observatory when I wanna dance (admittedly, I'm not a big Sahara person). No Age, Mastodon, fuckin eh I'm satisfied. I can't wait to see you all in the desert.

Looking at the line-up it's pretty obvious that there is going to be some more adds. However as it is..... EXCITED!

clarky123
01-30-2009, 06:09 AM
This is a strong line up esp Fri and Sun, face it, with more additions tba.
Last year, you couldnt get through the threads here without listening to people complain about Jack Johnson, and that alone made everything else impossible to even read.

jonprc
01-30-2009, 06:10 AM

Xenocide
01-30-2009, 06:11 AM

And yes, Sunday is fucking AMAZING.

Also, out of nowhere the latin band: MOLOTOV!!! I'm fucking happy with the lineup.

Yeah! Believe me, Molotov are awesome live... nice choice after the great Cafe Tacvba performance last year. Plus, many of their songs are written in english, so all you guys will enjoy not just music but hilarious lyrics as well.

MarkO
01-30-2009, 06:35 AM
Fucking typical.

I've called for Bob Mould and/or Paul Weller for a couple of years now. The year they play is the year I can't go. FUCK.

Leonard Cohen is a huge win. Nice one.

Where are you guys seeing the day-by-day ? I just see a list.

SecretPrescription

01-30-2009, 06:40 AM
so Friday's gonna be

Franz --> Moz --> Macca. i could do that. but in order to get a good spot, ima miss a lot of good acts in the late afternoon. i hope Beirut does the main stage, but i doubt it.

Carnie100
01-30-2009, 06:42 AM
Obviously we all agree that the headliners aren't on the level we're used to yet, but headliners will be added. Specifically a Sahara tent headliner - that one seems obvious that they're adding someone.

But I'm already stoked for April. There are a ton of great mid/sub-level bands this year - BofH, Black Keys, SSPU, YYYs - that I really look forward to seeing.

SecretPrescription

I am stoked about this year's lineup! Way better than last year. I worry that the Winehouse slot will need to be filled - cause lets be honest, I don't see her getting a visa to get into the US. And if she does, I would guess she might OD or something before hand. Otherwise, Sunday looks AWESOME! I cannot WAIT!!!!!!

The more I look at the lineup, the more my opinion changes... for the better.

I couldn't agree with you more. I was pretty happy with the Sahara tent last year, but then again, blog house owned 2007, so I understand why they booked who they did. This time around I'll get to see acts that I wouldn't necessarily drag myself to go to if they came to my city, and probably change my mind about a lot of things. I'm still excited, and I'm definitely going regardless of who's playing. This festival is the shit.

Prof. Amaretto
01-30-2009, 07:17 AM
Yeah, some of the artists I didn't recognize, I've checked out. Pretty solid stuff. I'd say this year has potential to beat 2008 in terms of consistency. 2008 had Prince, Portishead, and Kraftwerk, RW (for those into that sort of thing), Aphex, etc. but it lacked a lot during the day.

C'mon 2009, fetch me a dream!

Love the lineup, very excited. Sure, a lil' skimpy on Sahara tent acts, but as stated before, more to be added.

Simply put, if you don't like the line up, you are Ryan Seacrest.

Love the lineup, very excited. Sure, a lil' skimpy on Sahara tent acts, but as stated before, more to be added.

Simply put, if you don't like the line up, you are Ryan Seacrest.

better than last year??

Amy Whinehouse > Portishead??

The Killers > Prince??

Theres some good names this year but not better than last year.

Fuck no not like that.

Overall, this year is more appealing to me than last year in terms of all bands

But Prince, Portishead, Kraftwerk and Waters are the exception

ive been more pleased before, but i am still looking forwards to it very much. sometimes when you are less impressed with a line-up you get more free time to enjoy a festival for all it is, and you have time to go listen to random bands and hear something new that excites you. first time i ever say theivery corporation was in a situation like that, stumbling upon some badass music and saying "wtf is this awesomeness". see you guys there!

I'm feeling it so far, my initial reaction is that I know and like more bands than usual on lineup day (meaning... usually there are a TON I've never heard of and I get a lot more excited as I research). I've already seen about 25 of the bands on the lineup and they were all good.

Sunday's headlining acts will be incredible. I think there is more to come for Saturday.

Those of you saying 2008 was more solid -- think back to your initial reaction to the lineup (BEFORE Prince was added), people were whining and moaning even more than they are so far this year.

all my friends called me up and were amazed buy the lineup (same with me) a much better reaction than the initial 2008 lineup and there might not be kraftwerk, portishead, prince ever again but yyys, mbv, the cure is pretty nice. MBV into the cure is going to be amazing. I'm so happy with this lineup.

Anyone think they reorganized the day format a bit? making friday and sunday the bigger days (putting their biggest headliner on friday so its the first name they see instead of jack johnson) and to get people to go all 3 days.

the Ting Tings, the Crystal Method, Crystal Castles, the Presets (yeah I guess Paul McCartney is pretty cool too)

SAT
Thievery Corporation, TV on the Radio, Band of Horses, MSTRKRFT, omg MASTODON yes, Henry Rollins <3, omfg Superchunk?!, Glasvegas, Liars

SUN
The. Cure. , Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Public Enemy, Groove Armada, Perry Farrell, No Age and Shepard Fairey?! (whats he gonna do?)

Personally I'm super excited as I am every year. Now that the lineup is out I am able to turn on youtube, last.fm and listen to some new music that I'm pretty sure will be pretty good to wow they're are gonna blow up. The headliners are whatever (saw the cure in 04 was cool but will skip, McCartney, definitely gonna check for a little bit, and the killers, only cause the wifey will enjoy) but that will change and if it doesn't my money won't go wasted. I'll go find another act to indulge myself in. It still is Coachella, my weekend playground.

Initial Excitement goes for:

The line that goes SilverSun - Crystal Castles (who will probably be one of the most packed tents after video of their live performance makes its rounds) on Friday. Actually looking at Friday i see a lot of decision making going on that day that may result in some tough choices.

Saturday I'm liking Amy (hopefully not a train wreck), TOTR, Atmosphere, Mastodon, Beetroots and Calexico.

Sunday I'm loving all the hip hop. YYY's, PB&J, Roni Size, and Groove Armada (at the river, live, at sunset possibly, maybe, doubtfully but hoping anyways)

Was really hoping for: One Day as a Lion, The Virgins, Josh Martinez, and for my wife, No Doubt.

At the end of the day though, I'm gonna wish Coachella wasn't over despite who shows and who doesnt.

Edmontonian
01-30-2009, 09:01 AM
Overall, I've been to three coachellas 06-08 and this is prolly the weakest lineup so far, but with that said, it's got most of the bands that I've been dying to see that haven't been to coachella in the last three years.
Highlights:

The Cure
Paul McCartney
Glass Candy
Gui Boratto
Ghostland Observatory
Presets
Crystal Castles
The Crystal Method
Hercules and Love Affair (with Antony!)
Girl Talk
TVOTR
Sebastien Tellier

Plus there are a bunch that I know are amazing but I am not familiar with them enough right now to pass judgement, so they will probably become highlights over the next couple months after I listen to all their solo shit, check out set lists from previous shows, etc:
Morissey
Theivery Corporation
Paul Weller
Leonard Cohen
Throbbing Gristle
My Bloody Valentine
Peanut Butter Wolf

Other than that, yeah overall the lineup is sweet but the sahara lineup is really lacking.
Looks like they'll probably have MSTRKRFT close the sahara saturday, I'm from Canada so I've seen them about ten times. And they generally are not good. Pretty boring of sets with just popular electro bangers, not a lot of personality, they're always drunk as shit, they don't really try with their mixing. Hopefully they play a bunch of new stuff, I hope their new album is good but I'm [pretty skeptical...
The Crystal Method is the only real sahara draw...

Not really disappointed. There are a lot of good mid and lower tier bands guys. And while I am excited for McCartney, I just know my mom is going to want to go. I love my mom and all...

There are a few places I just don't want to take her...places like Burning Man and Coachella.

Really solid undercard here, there's even a lot way down the lineup like Airborne Toxic Event or Surkin, Para One billed as doing a LIVE set that I'm excited about.

The subheadliners are good too, Morrisey I could take or leave but I do like Franz, Amy Winehouse should be an entertaining trainwreck (I can only hope she shows up wasted), and MBV should be good.

The headliners are kind of meh, I'm excited to see McCartney in the same way I was excited to see Waters last year, just because he is a legend and has the potential to be mind-blowing, but I'm not expecting too much. I don't know how I feel about the Cure, never seen them live and I'm not a huge fan but they should be an interesting way to close out the festival -- although I suspect I'll watch part of their set and then go see Throbbing Gristle. The Killers headlining Saturday are obviously this year's Jack Johnson, but maybe we'll get a surprise addition like last year. But it's not like I usually go for the headliners anyway.

I also suspect there will be a bunch of stuff added. The whole lineup looks comparatively short to me.

I am pretty impressed with the lineup.
I think GV wised up after last years meager attendance and got headliners that have pretty hardcore followings. You know paul mccartney will sell out friday, which will definitely carry over to the other days. The Cure also has a pretty diehard fanbase-face it, people who are into the cure are WAY into the cure- and they will probably sell out sunday as well. saturday is pretty much covered by everyone who will buy three day passes, and will probably get someone to bump the killers out of the headline spot.
Add some more sahara acts, as promised, and this will probably be one of the best coachella's ever.
As of now, the undercard is really balanced- there are a bunch of bands i want to see each day.

And the Sahara tent! Even though the Sahara lineup is not yet complete, it's still looking pretty damn sweet! With Crookers, Bloody Beetroots, Switch, Buraka Som Sistema, Supermayer, Surkin and Para One (live??!!), and M.A.N.D.Y., I'm already in heaven! Can't wait to see what else they add!

u2 would never make it to coachella, not because they wouldnt come, but because they wouldnt be invited.

These bands can all be the best of friends, hang out on the weekend and all that, but it still doesn't change U2's Livenation contract.

So, hey, everyone, it's an amazing lineup. My initial reaction was shock and awe.

My first reaction was "hey, all those people asking for MBV can now be happy", and "damn, the Killers are really headlining" and then "where are the Sahara tent headliners"

Before checking out all the bands I am not familiar with, here is my short list of bands I would go see (* ones I have already seen):

FRIDAY
* A Place To Bury Strangers
Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band
* Franz Ferdinand
* Ghostland Observatory
* Morrissey
Paul McCartney
Silversun Pickups
The Crystal Method
The Airborne Toxic Event
* The Black Keys
We Are Scientists

SATURDAY
Amanda Palmer
Amy Winehouse
Henry Rollins
* Liars
* Mastodon
* Michael Franti & Spearhead
MSTRKRFT
Thievery Corporation
TRAV$DJ-AM

SUNDAY
* No Age
* The Cure
* The Kills
Throbbing Gristle
X
* Yeah Yeah Yeah's

Anyway, still digesting the list. There is probably something I am missing here...

Well if i can find at least ten acts that i want to see, then im happy with it.

The Cure was a big surprise to me, but in a good way. im stoaked that they're headlinin the last day.

I dont think The Killers should be headlining. but thats just me.

Paul McCartney? eh he might be worth watchin.

no Smiths but at least Morrissey will be there. never seen him live before so im stoaked about that.

Henry Rollins was quite a surprise. wasnt expecting him to play coachella. but he should still put on a good show.

Crystal Method will be fun to see. hopefully they'll be in the sahara tent. I will say that they're lacking in electronica acts. but Roni Size and Felix da Housecat is a bonus.

X will be cool to see. ive never seen them live before either.

they've definetly stepped it up with the hip hop acts this year like Public Enemy, The Bug, Atmosphere, Michael Franti and Spearhead, and if you want to include Mike Patton and Rahzel. so thats a step up from last year.

most of the acts you could have gaurenteed they would play this year like, TV On The Radio, My Bloody Valentine, Franz Ferdinand, Fleet Foxes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Black Keys, Silversun Pickups, Thievery Corporation, and MSTRKRFT. i think almost everyone knew those acts would be there. which isnt a bad thing seeing as that i want to see most of these acts.

well except for franz ferdinand.

Amy Winehouse is returning, huh? :blah
alittle of her goes along way.

but all and all, i think its a quality lineup. i just ordered my tickets and i cant wait till April.

see you all there.

I creamed myself when I saw this lineup...it is really stellar. And if the rumours are true that more sahara acts are too come? Just creamed myself again. I am already having conflict nightmares.

Every year since '01 I patiently (sometimes impatiently) wait for the line-up to come out. After two extra weeks of waiting.. I saw the line-up last night. My initial feelings were of slight disappointment. There's not ONE band on here that screams to me: HEY! YOU'VE GOTTA SEE THIS!, like there has been every year. I'm sure I will be in attendance, but not as enthusiastically this year. I just hope to god that they add quite a bit more to this, as of right now the line-up looks pretty weak sauce to me. The Killers?? A shit band from my town?? How the fuck did they end up on the top of the list? The Cure?? Are there that many checkered pants/shoes, ultra tight obscure band t-shirt, cheesy hot pink sunglasses wearing emos now? I thought it was dying away, apparently I have been mistaken. Fuck the Cure, and fuck that lackluster shitdrivvel. Where are all the strong undercard players? No reunions? No bands that should have been in Coachella many times over, that have either turned down an offer or got overlooked another year in a row. All the acts that I would be at least willing to see, I have seen at other concerts, or at other Coachellas. Here's the short list of people I will probably not be missing:
Bajofondo
Franz Ferdinand
Ghostland Observatory
Gui Boratto
Patton & Rahzel
Crystal Method
The Presets
Atmosphere
Booker T
Michael Franti...
MSTRKRFT
Tinariwen - Must see for me
TV on the Radio
Groove Armada
Lykke Li
Roni Size

Most of this list I have already seen at other Coachellas, or otherwise. There's just nobody I have either seen or haven't seen that excites me. But fuck the dime a dozen emo/indie acts that are getting more attention than they are worth now. Please for the love of god GV, add more acts that aren't easily pigeonholed into that genre. Anything, please, electronic, hip-hop, downtempo, world beat, something... Please... -Ill

all i did was shrug my shoulders at the list this year. most of the bands i have seen a few times so theres nothing that makes me really want to go. MBV will be awesome (especially if they switch the setlist up from the US shows) same with Paul (who i saw at amoeba records a few years back.

other than that saturday is very skipable, the lower tiered acts all recently came through LA as well, sigh, maybe i should just not go to shows from november til coachella so i wouldnt have just recently seen all the sub tiered bands.

oh well coachella 09, just another coachella in my book.

I have gone to Coachella 5 years in a row now. Last year was a bit of a disappointment as far as headliners are concerned...but you get over it. You always end up finding a handful of acts that you never heard before that remind you what the festival experience is about. One act or one time-slot filled by a big, familiar name does not make the whole experience.

Being out in the desert with a group of your best friends, sleeping under the stars after 2, and now 3 nights in a row of bitchin tunes, getting faded, having fun is what its all about. That being said, this is one of the more unique blends out of all the lineups of the past. A lot of bands playing together that are more rarities to see at festivals (Leonar Cohen, Superchunk, Throbbing Gristle, MBV, Paul Mc, Morrissey, Fleet Foxes)...is anybody else excited to simply see Henry Rollins in public, making his usual rants? It will be pure comedy.

There is one important glitch that all past lineups have never failed to dissapoint: not enough bands to just dance your ass off to. You all who have gone before know what I mean. It's been fuckin hot aaallll day; you've been running back and forth in the sun trying to check out all the openers. The cotton-mouth just keeps increasing due to 3 dollar waterbottles and your preference to sip on your flask instead. The SUN finally sets, there is a sensation of releif, and you get that second wind. The boozing continues, another j-bird sparks up, and Hot Chip comes on...all you want to do is dance your ass off. Then the Rapture, LCD soundsystem, Prodigy comes on later and blows everyone clear out of the tent to close the night.

I know some of you know what I'm talking about. I'm kind of worried that there is going to be a lot of standing around...its almost too mellow. I mean there is Felix da Housecat, Peanut Butter Wolf, Roni Size, Bloody Beetroots, but its just not enough quantity of that kind of dance your ass off at Coachella. Correct me if I'm wrong friends, with some more suggestions of who I should check out during the day.

I just let out a big "god DAMN" when I saw Throbbing Gristle's name at 8 AM this morning. I was in my school's computer lab and I think it echoed.

I'm a bit of the opposite of most other people in this thread, I'm enjoying how Sat/Sun looks, but there's nothing much on Fri that really grabs me.

This is THE worst line-up since Coachella started! :(. The Cure's already headlined here! couldn't get a better band??? And tickets are more expensive now. Prince and Waters rocked last years show. I just don't see The Killers or The Cure putting on that kind of show. To bad.... Doesn't feel worth the money anymore... At least some of the smaller acts are good.

Every year is the same shit. A polarized message board. Last year people said the line up sucked, the year before they said it sucked and the year before that, so on and so on... I just think if you feel that way this year I suggest you don't go. With you there will harsh my high, my mellow and fun time.

I was watching a band about 3 years ago and I remember some cunt trash talking them. You dont like them fine, there are a thousand other places she could have gone to stink up with all the shit that was coming out of her mouth. So please, in this recession, save your money, and stay home!

I will be sitting by the pool with friends and drinks in no particular order, going to the filter magazine preparty (its free and open bar - info to be posted soon) and three days of the greatest music fest in the world.

I'm not really interested in the Killers but feel like they at least fit in genre wise... JJ last year was so random to be at all these festivals. I wasn't even one of the ones who got very upset over it, I'd just never even heard of him?? (I don't listen to mainstream radio). Killers on the other hand... eh... I think most of us liked them when they came out, even if we're denying it now. If I hadn't seen them years ago, I'd probably be at least a little interested in checking them out now.

There, I came out. I was all over the Killers in 04. They were my favorite band for at least a few weeks. :)

I'm not sure what that means...edm has always had a strong representation there...I dont know how you can marginalize its importance at coachella. anyway you can always just go fri/sunday or just one of those days you dont have to go all three days.

yeah the backlash was much worse for jj, we also knew a while back that they were playing and possibly headlining. who knows they may end up opening for some larger addition. people have knocked the cure too basically just filing them under music for people that wear eyeliner...which is total crap. I'm not a crazy cure fan but I still have to admit they have SO MANY songs that are instantly recognizable and are pretty damn good. I have no prob with them or sir paul...I'm glad to see paul in the flesh.

Dissapointed as well. Especially with the Killers/Cure/Morrissey (literally depressing). Wow, its worse than I ever imagined it would be.

But as usual a decent undercard. Not good enough to shell out the $$ though.

Looks like Outsidelands will likely have a better lineup.. what a shame though, seeing as IMO theres no better venue than Coachella.

PS. Are The Killers this years festival Jack Johnson?

what makes you think outside will be better?? see this happened last year, everyone bitched about coachella and said well, bonnaroo it is, sasquatch it is, outside it is, APW it is...then saw those lineups and said well coachella it is.

I just dont get how people think one will automatically be better, last year all the festivals actually almost mirrored eachother haha at least as far as jj went.

You know, I used to be a 'crazy cure fan', but grew out of it and never managed to see them while I was really that into them. The first time I was them was in 2007 and I can honestly say that they overwhelmed me. They were incredible, sounded more like the band we knew from 20+ years ago than the 90's cure I grew away from, and made me regret I'd passed up so many opportunities to see me again. And it was very much like a hit parade in a good way, meaning they do not shy away from playing a LOT of old material.

This was at Download in CA in 2007 - they played for almost 3 hours. They could have played for 3 more and I would have stayed to listen. I trust they will put on a good show :)

Blindly loyal?? I dont go every year with the intent to pay for Paul Tollett's salary. I go for the over all experiance and the mini vacation that comes with it. I dont have expectations for Coachella, I have fun. Like I said, if ya dont like it dont go. That simple. :2c

I love when people say the headliners are underwhelming. Please remember that the board was convinced for weeks that our headliners were going to be Morrissey/Neil Young/Killers. You're telling me that McCartney/Cure/Killers with Morrissey subheadling is a disappointment compared to that shitfest?
