My jaw dropped. Not expected at all. I guess mac had some free time now that Obama is in office. :)

I think I'm going to call my intern a slack motherfucker today.

Hopefully people won't skip them...

One of the times when I saw them they did a cover of the theme song to the Tv show "Good Times".

Answering my own question... Conor Oberst and M. Ward are on Merge Records:

I love them -- as if I haven't posted that in about 20 threads at this point. I'm starting to sound like a stalker, but they are my second all-time favorite band. They have never disappointed live.

That "Slack Motherfucker" video was the best representation of their live show that I saw on youtube. There were some other videos from 2006 SXSW that were ok for video and audio but the sync was off which made me sad. They really need better AV of themselves on YT.

And to top it off, they gave us Merge. They are so unsung for how wonderful they are.

I am going to have rock neck and shaken baby syndrome after their set. And I can't wait.

If you haven't already, you should really check out the DVD.

I seem to remember a scene where the band is backstage at some club. Tradition would seem to have it that bands scribble their names on the walls of the dressing room, and it looks like it may be a somewhat historical place. Somebody from Superchunk is heard to exclaim "Who are the Maroons?"

Hilarious.

One of the things I adore about them is that they've never taken themselves too seriously.

As can be seen in this video for "Watery Hands":
DqX8hVG5NbU
Weird sidenote: it was directed by the guy who gave us the Mac vs. PC ads.

But the only checking of the DVD I've done was trying to find that "perfect" live Superchunk clip on YT. So, thanks for the suggestion -- will do.

You're not saying David Cross directed the Mac vs. PC ads, are you? ;)

I think this video is on the DVD as well, so if you're a collector...

(I really gotta dig that DVD back out of the basement today...)

Ha! I should have been more explicit. Phil Morrison directed David Cross acting like a director.

I remember seeing them 12 or so years ago at the same club where I saw Radiohead a coupe years earlier. I remember them being pretty good, but I've never gotten any of their albums.

Just listened to these guys for the first time yesterday, definitely one of those bands that keep growing in number who are "hopefully can check them out barring a major conflict" bands.

Definitely a must see, Can't wait.. I've seen Superchunk probably 15 times since 89, and was shocked that they were finally playing this year...

Yeah, I read that on wiki that they've been around since '89, that's crazy that they're still around and haven't made it big at all. Kinda like Mudhoney, they just keep putting out albums, touring, plugging away.

I love me some Mudhoney.. Yeh Superchunk never really got radio big, but are pretty well regarded in the Indie scene. Then again, a ton of early 90 bands never really got the recognition they should have. Pavement had one radio hit, I think "Cut Your Hair". I think the drummer is now playing with Bob Mould, atleast he was during ATP New York last year. Superchunk hasnt put out a new album since 2001, so I guess that is why its a surprise even though they have played one offs here are there.
