The black keys are on friday, most people know them. Most people know they are going to bring the rock, and fucking destroy everyone who watches them. I'm hoping for outdoor theater at night. if you want albums get Attack and Release, and Magic Potion. This thread is for all things black keys.

I've seen them 4 or 5 times and I'll still watch them no matter who they're up against. It's a different show every night, and always a good time.

just saw them last night in the D. kept closing my eyes and hearing their sound fill the place past the brim, and then opening my eyes to the surprise that there were only 2 people creating that full a sound. awesome. i liked the wavey distortion/reverb stuff the guitar player does (i dont know the technical terms for that typa shit). very very talented. and he kind of reminds me of thom yorke, not at all in his voice, but in his head bobbing and stature. also liked how they ended their songs really abruptly. exciting stuff

my guess is the name time as the national last year on the outdoor stage. This is my 1 act who conflicts don't matter on friday. Well Macca also, but i have a feeling it's going to be silent at that time.

Let me say this about the Black Keys. I'd listened to them a couple of times (friend is into them) but it never really impressed me recorded. Not that they sounded bad or anything, just didn't really do much for me.

At Bumbershoot last year, waiting for Stone Temple Pilots (who turned out to be blegh), I thought I was "going to have to" wait through the Black Keys set. I ended up being blown away. They were incredible live. So even if you're listening along and aren't sure how you feel, they are worth checking out -- give them a few minutes and they will reel you in.

I agree though.. They should play with a full band. Have Danger Mouse play with them.

I agree clumsy, I was expecting their name a little bigger, or a little higher or SOMETHING. They deserve to be before Conor Oberst.

hmmm im confused.. you would "cream everywhere" if the black keys were to play with d.m., which i assume is an act accompanied by happiness, but yet you say "no" to the "full band" in the first sentence

dude, you n me clumsy. hangin hard. im tellin you, danger and a band would make them so awesome. ive seen them twice, once at coach, by themselves and it rules but they could be a subheader w/ a backing band. they should be higher, they should at least be higher than beirut.

by the way, speaking of "blues" music, where is seasick steve? two gallants? white stripes? hahaha and the bb king rumors? ive seen bb and if willie can kick ass at coach so can he! willie was the shit, his sone played texas flood and i shit myself. and it was the second time i saw him! coachella this year is focusing too much on 80's band and synth-80s-type bands, heavy metal and shitty hiphop. i dont like it, signs and wonders. where's old crow medicine show, gillian welch, joanna newsom, the felice brothers or any good folk/ blues/ roots bands. SHAPE UP!

Good to see so much excitement about the keys around here.

Definitely one of the unsung heroes of the decade. IMO, they'll go down as one of the best blues artists of all time.

Seen em 3 times: in a small club when Rubber Factory came out, in a large venue after Magic Potion, and Coach 07. They never dissappoint.

For anyone on here who's not familiar with em, here's a brief description of each album:

The Big Come Up: Old school blues sound, minimalist approach, lo-fi
Thickfreakness: Crunchier, more rock-based songs, higher energy
Rubber Factory: Extremely catchy songs (many in commercials), probably their best
Chulahoma: EP of Junior Kimbrough cover songs, slower, beautiful
Magic Potion: A change in recording style, darker, more patient
Attack & Release: Produced by Danger Mouse, wide range of sounds, extremely creative

Enjoy kids, see you at the show!

01-31-2009, 05:38 PM
I realize that's kind of a dumb statement...and that they're more a rock band than "blues artists", but the fact is:

they play blues songs and they are AWESOME. it kind of works.

you can't really compare the guitar work to BB, Hendrix, SRV, Cray, Clapton or anything, so i guess they don't qualify. but any of those guys would have loved to write riffs like "the breaks", "aeroplane blues" or "black door".

you can't fuck with em!

killsunshine
01-31-2009, 05:47 PM
:2ci dont count any of them really. i'm more of a delta blues/ acoustic blues/ pioneers guy as far as timelessness goes. i think in order to be one of the all-time greats of blues you have to have been sketched by r. crumb.

i also makes it so there's only overlap during the first 20 minutes of Morrissey, and none during the last half hour of Franz...

while none between Morrissey, Cohen, & McCartney, while leaving no dead air on both stages at any point...

i really think NASA is gonna be this year's Simian going against McCartney, it also enables the Sahara headliner to play while nobody is playing Main, and even Ghostland ends 30 minutes before the end of Morrissey's set...

no real conflicts (sahara aside), just overlaps...

Ok as far as what album to start with, it has to be Magic Potion. that is where it all came together for them. Then after that either rubber factory or Attack and Release. But really when it comes down to it, just get all 5 albums and be done with it.

I came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter what album you listen to first, you just need to make sure you listen to all 5 albums. The Black Keys will destroy all, with the exception of a Paul M conflict I will not be missing the black keys. Also Magic Potion IS where it all came together for the black keys. Every song on that album is strong, and is a display of the keys at their peak. Right now with Attack and Release it's part 1 of another book for them.

wrong, he runs his guitar through several amps, most likely turning the bass up on the eq, not to mention a good sound guy will eq it well, and i've seen them once and alot of videos, and i think it makes them great the fact that they are a two piece. its more intimate and all that much more talented that the two of them can create such beautiful and rockin blues. trust me, it will be rockin. if you are in doubt, just remember how many members are in the white stripes and how hard they rock...

Same here...Dan Auerbach @ El Rey in March...his new solo album is fucking GREAT as well.

They're playing a "secret show" at the Glass House the day before Coachella starts (Thursday). Worth going to this as well? It would solve any potential conflict on Friday if I had seen them the day before and could see someone like Beirut or Conor Oberst & The MVB instead.

you won't get back at 1am. Pomona to Indio is an hour and 30 minute drive tops.

That's what I figured, and that the show would be out between 11-11.30. Plus, I'm staying at an RV park and will have a trailer behind me, so that might make parking around the Glass House more trouble than it's worth.

Missed them in 2006. Saw them at Lolla last year. It was hot as hell and the band was getting beaten by the sun badly. It was still awesome, but not as enjoyable as it could be.

Sadly, I haven't seem them recently, but I still remember their set in 2004. They were in a smaller tent, and there weren't many people there at the start, but by the end they had drawn quite a crowd. One of the more memorable bands at an amazing Coachella.

1.black keys - rubber factory
2.black keys - thickfreakness
3.black keys - chulahoma
4.black keys - big come up
5.black keys - attack and release
6.black keys - magic potion

there...

although i barely listen to 1&2 anymore those are the strongest to me....
live performance of attack and release songs doesn't sound anything like the record i must say... magic potion is the least played record live these days....

This is awesome because I've only heard 5 & 6 and I love them. I'm listening to "The Wicked Messenger" right now and it is a great cover.

So I was really stoked about catching The Black Keys at Outside Lands Festival last year but some bitch security guard fucked it up. It was suppose to see Black Mountain then The Black Keys and then Radiohead but after the Black Mountain set I got into it with this cunt security guard and just left that stage and went over to the main stage for Radiohead.

I had this OSL trip planned for a while but the weekend before I left I fucked up my foot really bad so I had a hard time walking. And for anyone that was at OSL you know that there was a shitload of walkin. Anyways, after Black Mountain I had to piss and I didn't want to have to walk like a thousand feet over to the porto potties so I limped over to the handicap one's. Well this stupid fat bitch security guard said "you ain't handicapped". I was like "You stupid bitch! Didn't you just see my ass limping over here for like the last five minutes?" She goes "Yeah, but this is for REAL handicapped people" and I said "BITCH, I am really fucking handicapped - hence me walking like a fuckin crippled!" I was already very frustrated that I had to fucking waddle around the place. So I had to take off my shoe and 3 pairs of socks and show this bitch my bruised ass foot. Then I just pushed my way through and went to take a leak. After that I was so pissed that I just waddled over to the main stage. I blame me missing The Black Keys on that nasty bitch. So I'm definitely not missing these guys this year.

So I know its been talked about in here, but Im not looking.

If played the sh*t out of Attack & Release and Rubber Factory, I also have Magic Potion but havn't really jumped into it yet. Should i listen to another one first?

Besides Paul & Morrisey, they are my third must see. Pretty sure they'll get the Raconteurs spot from last year.

I also had to forgo seeing the Black Keys @ OSL so as to get way close for Radiohead, since the distance between stages was the real cunt. (quantitatively, a quarter-mile)

What?

http://consequenceofsound.net/2009/09/11/the-black-keys-team-up-with-anyone-whos-anyone-in-hip-hop-for-new-project/

While details remain a bit sketchy, as Billboard reports and this teaser trailer confirms, The Black Keys have teamed up with hip-hop heavyweights Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Raekwon, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, NOE, Nicole Wray, Billy Danze, and, somehow, the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard for a brand new project called Blakroc.

The collaboration reportedly got underway in early summer in Brooklyn, N.Y and will come to fruition on November 27th when Blackroc releases a yet-to-be-titled album. According to Donewaiting, The Black Keys served as producers of the effort, which will consist of 11 tracks and be released on a label started by Dame Dash and The Black Keys management.

Obviously, more details are still forthcoming, and, as always, we’ll have them when they become available.

You really can't go wrong with these guys but I'd recommend their most recent album, Attack & Release. Thickfreakness is another one of my favorites, and if you like rap at all you might want to give Blakroc a shot.

oddly enough, I've only seen the Black Keys at Coachella. (3 times)
and they are one of my all time favorite bands.

I came close to seeing them in Phoenix one time, but was kicked out for underage drinking.
I ended up watching through an open door about 100 feet from the venue. drunk, and still singing along.

I keep missing them. I've been to two other festivals where they've been on the bill but I've missed them due to seeing someone else. I like a few of their songs, only album I've heard from them is Rubber Factory.

i'm thinking the same thing...which will be legit for me because the only KOL song i like is what they usually open up with (Crawl). then i can bounce on over to chem bros.

So, what do you guys think the setlist will look like? Is it going to be a typical Brothers set because they haven't played Coachella since it's release? Or are they going to switch up because they've toured Brothers pretty extensively since it's release? It is a festival set, hmmm.

I sure would like to see the play "Psychotic Girl," "Oceans and Streams," or "Everywhere I Go."

Easily convertible if you open the files in WinAmp and have them converted to some file type i don't remember. then you open the files in itunes and you can convert them to MP3 from the 'advanced' drop down
